Volunteering is a good way for teenagers to make a difference and meet new people. Here are a few volunteer opportunities that you could encourage your teen to take up.
Help a local food bank

Your teen would be involved in anything, from preparing meals to working behind the scenes to repack donated food items, serving food, and carrying boxes.
Help at a soup kitchen
A soup kitchen is one of the places where the hungry can get free or affordable meals (usually soup and bread). Most soup kitchens run mainly on donations and the generosity of people. As a soup kitchen volunteer, your child may clean the tables and plates, help distribute food, cook food, and more.
Volunteer for Meals on Wheels
By volunteering for Meals on Wheels, your teen will deliver nutritious meals to the elderly or the disabled. It’s perfect for teens who have just received their driving license and love any reason to get behind the wheel!

In the small coastal town of Havenbrook, life was peaceful and happy. The locals enjoyed the beauty of the ocean and the quiet of their homes. However, one day, their peaceful lives were turned up side down by a destructive natural disaster.
The morning started like any other. The sun rose, spreading its golden light over the town. People woke up, prepared for their daily lives, and went about their business. Little did they know that a storm was forming far out in the ocean. As the day progressed, the sky began to darken, and the wind started to pick up. By afternoon, Havenbrook was under the control of a powerful hurricane.
The hurricane’s strong winds tore through the town, cutting roofs into pieces and overturning trees. The ocean became “crazy” because of the storm and washed in huge waves into the town, flooding streets and homes. The locals, caught unprepared, hurried to find shelter. Many were trapped in their homes, waiting in fear as the waters rose higher and higher. It seemed as if the world were at an end.
The town’s emergency services worked tirelessly to rescue those in danger. They used boats to travel through the flooded streets and led people to safety. However, the storm was so powerful that even their efforts were much affected. Many homes were completely destroyed, and lives were lost. The once-peaceful town was now a scene of ruin and despair (绝望).
After the hurricane, Havenbrook’s local people began the arduous task of rebuilding their lives. They worked together, sharing their resources and skills, to rebuild their homes and community. Support from outside the town poured in, with volunteers and donations (捐赠) helping to speed up the recovery (恢复) process. Slowly but surely, Havenbrook began to rise from the ruins.
4. What can we know from the first two paragraphs?
A. The locals sensed the coming storm. B. The town often suffered natural disasters.
C. The hurricane arrived without obvious signs. D. The locals led a peaceful life before the disaster.
5. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. How the locals started rescue work. B. The locals managed to leave homes safely.
C. Why the hurricane hit the town suddenly. D. The hurricane caused terrible damage and fear.
6. How did the town’s emergency services act when faced with the disaster?
A. They built the shelter for local people. B. They sent people to safety using boats.
C. They carried out rescues with volunteers. D. They couldn’t reach the affected areas.
7. What does the underlined word “arduous” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Dangerous. B. Attractive. C. Difficult. D. Common.
C
Slang (俚语) words are fixed words or phrases that have a cultural meaning that is different from the basic meaning. For example, when you “keep your cool”, you are not talking about the temperature. You are saying that you will stay calm under pressure.
Cool slang changes all the time. Some slang examples, like “what’s up?”, have been around so long that they have become idioms, or common expressions, where the meaning of certain word combinations (组合) are really different from their basic meaning. An example of an idiom is “out of the blue” to show something that happened without warning.
Other slang words are popular or come from new music, TV, or movies, and are only used for a short time. Knowing how and when to use slang words or college slang will help you connect with and better understand American students.
As a general rule, you can use popular words and phrases now with your friends and classmates, but should use more formal English when speaking to professors and co-workers. If you use today’s slang in more formal settings, like at work, people might see you as rude or unprofessional.
Pop culture and youth culture tend to create new slang words and trends (趋势). Historically, that meant that the TV shows, pop and hip-hop music, movies, and video games popular with kids, teens, and young adults influenced today’s slang. While those forms of media still shape new slang words and cool slang, young people now tend to spend more time online — and with that change, the Internet, and especially social media, drive most of American slang in 2025.
While the Internet and pop culture have created common slang words around the country, keep in mind that different areas of the country may use different slang words. Wherever you decide to study, you’ll quickly hear the local slang — and it may even become part of your own vocabulary!
8. Why is slang said to help students connect?
A. It shows respect. B. It sounds funny.
C. It breaks language walls. D. It follows grammar rules.
9. What could happen if you use slang the wrong way?
A. It affects people build trust. B. It may confuse friends.
C. It makes yourself disrespected. D. It could seem impolite.
10. What can we know about slang usage across different places?
A. It varies by location. B. It’s hard to learn.
C. It’s only used online. D. It remains unchanged over time.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Differences Between Slang and Idioms
B. Slang: Cultural Meaning and Modern Trends
C. How to Use Slang Correctly in Formal Settings
D. The History of American Slang
D
The big day is finally here. You and your team have made it to the final game of the soccer tournament. You’re ready to win... but so is the other team. Then, suddenly, someone scores! The game is over. The other team has won and earns a shiny gold cup. But then the coaches start giving out something else to you and the other players: participation (参与) awards. Everyone reacts differently. Some glow with pride. Others look disappointed. And you? You don’t know how to feel...
Participation awards have been around since the 1920s, when they were invented to make sports safer for kids. That’s because when the first youth sports leagues were created in the early 1900s, games were even more competitive than they are today. Many kids were badly hurt in their effort to win. Adults were concerned. Some schools even canceled sports programs altogether.
But then came a solution: participation awards. The point was to take the spotlight away from winning and put it on other values, like teamwork and commitment, or sticking with something. Many people today say that’s why participation awards are still needed. “Winning isn’t everything,” says Kenneth Barish, a scientist who studies kids’ feelings and behavior. “The more important thing is to let kids know that we’re proud of them — not for winning, but for their effort. Praising effort has amazing benefits. It makes it easier for young people to try new things without fear, learn from mistakes, and take on new challenges with a positive attitude.”
But some people worry that giving awards to everyone sends the wrong message. In real life, people are not always rewarded for just showing up. After all, you don’t get an A just for going to class. Participation awards, some say, could teach kids to expect awards when they aren’t deserved.
So what do you think? Does everyone deserve a participation award? Or is it time to toss them aside for good?
12. What’s the writing purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To share a competitive game.
B. To compare two kinds of awards.
C. To show the reactions to the awards.
D. To introduce the participation awards.
13. What can be learned about participation awards from paragraph 2?
A. They were introduced to make sports safer for young players.
B. They were created in the first youth sports leagues in the 1900s.
C. They were aimed at making the games less competitive than before.
D. They were the only way to remove concern about the safety of sports.
14. What does Kenneth Barish intend to convey?
A. The limitations of winning the game.
B. The applications of praising the effort.
C. The significance of developing the teamwork spirit.
D. The importance of forming a healthy view of effort.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards participation awards?
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.

Other slang words are popular, or come from new music, TV, or movies, and are only used for a short time.

【答案】12. D 13. A 14. D 15. B

Be healthier.”(很多人一开始会设定模糊的健身目标,比如“减重、更健康”)”,以及后文“but they don’t help much with planning or getting started.(但这些目标对规划或启动锻炼没什么帮助)”可知,此空需先肯定这些目标的初衷,再通过“but”转折指出其不足。A选项“These are great ideas (这些想法很好)”承上启下,先肯定这些想法本身不错,再通过后文转折说明其局限性,符合逻辑衔接。故选A项。

【19题详解】
分析语篇结构,此处需为本段小标题,与其他段落小标题格式一致(均为祈使句),且需概括段落核心内容。根据后文“Cristina Chan, a F45 Global Recovery Athlete, says that tracking your workouts in a way that’s easy to see can make a huge difference when exercising alone. 【20题详解】
根据前文“Seeing how regularly you keep doing it over time is a powerful motivator,(长期看到自己规律锻炼的记录,是一种强大的动力)”可知,此空需进一步说明“记录进度”的具体作用。G选项“It enables you to focus on showing up instead of physical results(它能让你专注于坚持参与,而非身体上的结果)”补充说明动力产生的具体原因,符合语境。故选G项。
