Unit 8 Let's Communicate! Section B 1a What do you talk about when you meet someone for the first time? When we meet someone for the first time, we usually talk about safe and easy topics. First, we often greet each other and talk about the weather, like “It’s a sunny day today, isn’t it?” It’s a friendly way to start a conversation. Then, we might ask about their hobbies, such as “Do you like playing sports or reading books?” Hobbies are fun to share and can help us find common ground. We can also talk about our school or work, like “Which school do you go to?” or “What’s your favorite subject?” These topics are not too personal. Sometimes, we comment on small things around us, such as the place we’re in—“This café is really nice, right?” We usually don’t ask private questions, like how much money someone has or their family’s secrets. Keeping the talk light and friendly helps us get along well with new people. 1b Read the text. Who did the author write this text for? 1b Read the text. According to the text, listening plays an important role in a conversation. What do you think makes a good listener? To be a good listener, one should first listen carefully without interrupting others. Then, show interest by nodding or asking relevant questions about what the speaker talks about, just like asking about their hobby as mentioned in the text. Also, avoid thinking about what to say next while others are speaking and focus fully on their words. This way, the speaker will feel respected and willing to continue the conversation. 2. Do you think the tips are reasonable/'riːznəbl/? Why or why not? I think the tips are reasonable. Because they cover different aspects of communication. Listening carefully helps us understand others better. Choosing the right topic avoids awkwardness. Being honest makes the conversation sincere. Paying attention to body language helps convey friendliness. Following these tips can really make conversations smoother and more enjoyable. 3. What other tips can you add to the text? Be respectful of different opinions: Even if you don’t agree, let others finish speaking and express your views politely. Use appropriate humor: A light joke can make the conversation more relaxed, but avoid jokes that might offend others. Share your own stories moderately: When the conversation allows, sharing your relevant experiences can deepen the connection, but don’t dominate the talk. We hope you’ll be able to make it. Looking forward to seeing you then. Yours sincerely, Minghua Middle School *Project Tell a chain story 4a Work in groups. Each student writes one sentence beginning with “If…” on their own piece of paper. For example: 4b Put all the pieces of paper into a box or jar. The first person picks one and reads it aloud. Others then add “ if ” sentences to continue the story. 4c Take turns to add sentences until the story ends naturally. Each story should include at least five sentences. 4d When a story ends, pick another piece of paper. Take turns to tell the next story. 示例框架( 学英语): Person 1: If we learn English well, we can talk with foreigners. Person 2: If we talk with foreigners, we will know more about their cultures. Person 3: If we know more about cultures, we will become more open-minded. Person 4: If we become open-minded, we can make friends from all over the world. Person 5: If we make international friends, our life will be more colorful. Person 1: If we go for a picnic, everyone will be excited. Person 2: If everyone is excited, we’ll play some fun games. Person 3: If we play games, we will have a lot of laughter. Person 4: If we have laughter, we will create wonderful memories. Person 5: If we create memories, we will look forward to the next picnic. Person 1: If we visit the zoo, we will see many cute animals. Person 2: If we see cute animals, we’ll take lots of photos. Person 3: If we take photos, we will share them with our friends. Person 4: If we share photos, our friends will feel like they were there too. Person 5: If our friends feel that way, we will invite them to the zoo next time. Person 1: If we have a school party, all the students will be happy. Person 2: If all the students are happy, we’ll dance and sing together. Person 3: If we dance and sing, we will make the party full of joy. Person 4: If the party is full of joy, we will remember it for a long time. Person 5: If we remember it, we will want to have such a party again next year. 1. What forms of communication do you often use? 2. Which form of communication do you think works the best for you? I often use forms of communication like face-to-face talking, sending messages on WeChat, and making phone calls. I think face-to-face talking works the best for me because I can see others’ expressions and get immediate responses. 3. What will you do to improve your communication skills? 4. Can you use if-clauses to talk about possible future actions? I will practice listening carefully and asking more questions to improve my communication skills. Yes, I can. For example, “If I practice speaking English every day, I will become better at communicating with foreigners.” The End $
