Earth Day (地球日) is a special day celebrated on April 22nd every year. It began in 1970 when people started to realize the importance of protecting our environment. Back then, not many people talked about or even thought about the environment. However, as time went by, it became clear that our planet was facing serious problems because of pollution and waste.
One example of environmental improvement is the Cuyahoga River in Ohio. It was so polluted that trash and oil slick (浮油膜) floating on the river caught fire several times. The most famous fire was the one in 1969. It damaged (毁坏) two railroad bridges before the firemen brought it under control. Today, it no longer burns, and it’s safe for the wildlife like birds, fish, and other animals. This change shows how far we’ve come in our efforts to clean up our environment.
The celebration of Earth Day ▲ . People are paying more attention to their actions on the planet. For instance, in 2007, people in China paid much attention to a big problem. People were throwing away 27 million plastic bags a day! This led to the “Bye- bye Throw- away Culture Week” activity, which aimed to reduce waste and develop recycling.
In 2008, China passed new laws against the throw-away culture, especially to protect the soil. These laws have helped to reduce pollution. Every April 22nd, millions of volunteers from around the world come together to clean and protect the Earth. They take part in various activities, from planting trees to cleaning up litter.
You can join us in these efforts to make our planet a better place. By taking small actions in our daily lives, we can all contribute to the health of our environment. Earth Day is a reminder that every person has a role to play in protecting our planet for future generations (后代).

Pandas are loved by people worldwide, yet they were once suffering big challenges. Their natural living environment was destroyed, and it created breeding (繁殖) difficulties for pandas. In the wild, scientists found that female (雌性) pandas only gave birth every 28 months. This led to a slow increase in their numbers. As a result, the panda population was decreasing.
Another challenge facing pandas was reduced bamboo supplies. Pandas depend on bamboo for their diet. The average life span (寿命) of bamboo species is 60 years. However, bamboo flowers and dies. It then takes several years for the bamboo to regrow. Therefore, for only 5 to 8 years, the bamboo can serve as food for pandas. When bamboo dies, pandas must move to other areas. At the beginning, this was not very serious, but with the rise in human population, many forests were cut down to make way for villages and roads. This led to pandas losing their homes and having to move to other places. It was almost impossible for them to find new homes.
So China has taken many measures to protect them. We plan to set up 67 panda reserves by 2025 to provide them with homes. The largest panda reserve (保护区) is the Wolong Nature Reserve in Sichuan Province, which covers an area of 2,000 square kilometers and is home to 149 giant pandas now.
Scientists are also trying to find ways to increase the number of pandas. With these efforts, there is hope now for the future of these magical creatures.

【答案】范文:
Dear Wang Ming,
It has been a long time since we last met. I hope everything is going well with you.
I’m excited to share the changes in my hometown with you. Ten years ago, my hometown was in a terrible mess. The river was dirty with lots of rubbish. People cut down many trees and the earth was washed away when it rained. The roads were narrow with waste. It was not a pleasant place to live in. But now everything has changed with the help of our government. The river is clean, and many kinds of fish have come back. People plant many trees and the hills are green. The roads are wide and tidy. The environment is much better and I feel very happy living here.
I would like you to come for a visit and see the changes for yourself. Looking forward to your visit.
Best wishes,
Li Ming
