I wasn’t prepared to be a climate refugee. Not after relocating my family from drought and wildfire California to the “climate shelter” of Asheville, N.C. But less than two months after we moved into our delightfully wooded, mild-weather community, we were forced to leave. On September 26, the hurricane made its way inland... Trees crashed down around my home as emergency alerts sounded on my phone... a large pine tree crashed onto the roof directly above my young son’s bedroom... When we heard it would take weeks or longer to restore basic services, I made plans for my family to leave town.
What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The severe damage caused by a hurricane in Asheville
B. An account of a family becoming climate refugees
C. Ways to survive natural disasters in mountainous areas
D. The importance of early evacuation during hurricanes
Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage?
A. A Frightening Night in Asheville
B. Escaping From California's Disasters
C. An Account of a Climate Refugee
D. The Dangers of Living Near Rivers

Apple is making a new feature called Lockdown Mode to protect its products from the world’s most advanced spyware. This mode is for a small number of users targeted by the spyware. When turned on, Lockdown Mode will limit what apps, websites and features can do. For example, on an iPhone, it will block most message attachments and incoming calls from people the user hasn’t previously had a call with.
Last November, Apple accused a foreign cybersecurity (网络安全) company, PPP Group, of installing spyware to target Apple products used by journalists, business people, academics, and government officials. Apple claimed that PPP’s tools allowed attacks, including from some organizations willing to pay huge sums to target a tiny portion of users with valuable information.
Weeks earlier, Apple had updated its software to fix a fault that PPP had been exploiting to silently infect iPhones using iMessage. This fault allowed a rare and dangerous “zero-click” attack, where users could get infected without clicking on anything, according to the Citizen Lab, an academic research group.
PPP Group has said that it provides tools for police and security departments around the world to fight crime and has ended contacts with organizations that have abused its software. It argued that Apple’s lawsuit should be dismissed because it acts as an agent of foreign administrations. However, a central appeals court ruled that such immunity doesn’t apply to foreign companies. Apple’s lawsuit is currently on hold while the highest court reviews a related case involving PPP and Meta Platforms’ WhatsApp.
On Wednesday, PPP said it welcomes any solution that strengthens privacy. But it also said it’s important for security departments to be able to access encoded data for criminal investigations.
Apple plans to test the Lockdown feature soon and will release it widely this fall as part of its new operating systems for iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers. “Lockdown Mode will reduce the attack surface and increase the costs for greedy spyware companies,” said Citizen Lab Director Ron Deibert. Apple will also give rewards of up to $2 million to researchers who find weaknesses in Lockdown Mode.

A.the ability to end contracts with misusing organizations
B.the power to provide tools for police to fight crime
C.the right of being informed of relevant cases
D.the freedom from being taken to court
3.It can be inferred from the passage that ______ .
A.PPP Group takes no part in the “zero-click” attack
B.Apple’s lawsuit against PPP Group has been rejected
C.PPP Group’s tools are used safely by authorized agencies

A recent groundbreaking study by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) forecasts massive financial damages due to climate change, projecting annual damages of about $38 trillion ($38 million million) by the year 2050. This figure highlights the severe economic challenges that lie ahead on a global scale, with the greatest impacts expected to burden the countries least responsible for greenhouse emissions (排放).
The economic damage, estimated between $19 trillion to $59 trillion by mid-century, primarily stems from increased temperatures and their subsequent impact on agriculture, labor productivity, and infrastructure The study also notes potential increases in costs due to more frequent and severe weather events, which are expected to become more common as global temperatures rise.
The findings reveal a disconcerting disparity: nations within the tropical (热带的) regions, which have contributed least to historical carbon emissions, are predicted to suffer income losses 60% greater than those in higher-income, higher-emission countries. This highlights a significant climate justice issue, as these least-developed nations possess fewer resources to adapt to increasing climate impacts.
Anders Levermann, head of complexity science at PIK and co-author of the study, emphasized the inequity and urgency of the situation. “Countries in the tropics will suffer the most because they are already warmer. Further temperature increases will therefore be most harmful there,” he explained. Levermann argues for a rapid structural shift towards renewable energy to ease these impacts and stabilize global temperatures.
When placed alongside other major climate impact forecasts, the PIK study stands out for its comprehensive data analysis and harsh projections. Previous studies have similarly highlighted the economic damages of climate change but lacked the extensive regional and specific insights this study provides.
The study strongly advocates for great and immediate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to avoid the worst of these economic damages. It suggests that slowing climate change is not only a moral and environmental must but also economically advantageous, as the cost of inaction is far greater than the expenses associated with reducing global warming to manageable levels.
The socioeconomic consequences of such extensive economic losses could lead to heightened global inequality and potentially, social unrest. This projection stresses the importance of international cooperation in climate action plans and the development of fair policies that recognize and make up for the inequities faced by the less developed nations most affected by climate change.
5.Climate change will cause massive economic damage worldwide by 2050 mainly because _____.
A.the average world temperature will increase much faster than expected
B.rising temperatures will damage farming, infrastructure and productivity
C.big countries will experience economic crises due to more severe weather events
D.tropical regions are unprepared to adapt to the damages caused by climate change
6.By “a disconcerting disparity” in paragraph 3, the author means _____.
A.poor countries least responsible for emission will suffer most in economy
B.it is projected that people in tropical countries will earn 60% less by 2050
C.higher-income countries are reluctant to invest in slowing global warming
D.higher-emission countries are trying to justify their role in climate impacts
7.The PIK study arouses the public attention due to _____.
A.its rigid climate impact forecasts
B.its overall statistics and the severity of its findings
C.its different approach to analyzing data
D.its similar regional insights on economic damages
8.What does the PIK study imply?
A.Fair policies should be established to avoid further rising of temperatures.
B.Reducing gas emissions will benefit the environment but harm the economy.
C.Inequality should be reduced through cooperation in fighting climate change.
D.Wealthy countries should bear the whole cost of coping with global warming.

In a town near the Potomac River, George and Anne Allen, both 82, struggle to remain in their beloved three-story house and neighborhood. Mr. Allen has had trouble walking since he broke his backbone in a fall down the stairs, and he expects to lose his driver’s license when it comes up for renewal given his physical state. Mrs. Allen recently got her foot hurt getting out of bed. Neither can climb up to change the light or bend under the sink to fix a leak. Without outside help, stores and public locations mean unimaginable hikes to them.
So the Allens have banded together with their neighbors, who are equally determined to avoid being forced from their homes by dependence. Along with more than 100 communities nationwide, their group is part of a movement to make neighborhoods comfortable places to grow old in.
“We are totally dependent on ourselves,” Mr. Allen said. “But I want to live in a mixed community, not just with the elderly. And as long as we can do it here, that’s what we want.”
Their group has been registered as a nonprofit corporation, is setting membership dues, and is lining up providers of transportation, home repair, companionship, security and other services to meet their needs at home for as long as possible.
Urban planners say this movement, organized by residents instead of government agencies, could make “aging in place” safe and affordable for a majority of elderly people. Although not the cure- all for those with complicated medical needs, the approach addresses what experts say can be a premature decision by older people to give up their homes in response to relatively small problems. As these small problems mount, sometimes accompanied by pressure from adult children, the elderly homeowner is caught off guard. Remaining at home without sufficient help is frightening. “If people don’t feel so overpowered, they don’t have to jump at precipitous decisions. Actually practices like moving into nursing homes are hard to be reversed,” said an expert.
For inspiration, “aging in place” groups now pay yearly dues — $580 for an individual in exchange for the security of knowing that carpenters, chefs, computer experts or home health helpers are one phone call away.
9.What is NOT mentioned as a problem the Allens meet with?
A.Physical weakness due to the broken bone.
B.Possible loss of driver’s license due to breaking traffic rules.
C.Failure to handle certain fixing tasks due to limited mobility.
D.Difficulty in traveling to public places alone due to physical condition.
10.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.People like Allens gather to live in a special place for shared elderly caring.
B.The government arranges necessary services for people like Allens.
C.Senior people give up “aging in place” life mainly out of pressure from children.
D.“Aging in place” people pay to have necessary service staff on call.
11.The underlined word precipitous in the passage is closest in meaning to ________.
A.alternative B.fake C.rushed D.joint
12.Which of the following is probably the title of the passage?
A.US grey band fights to stay at home
B.Attention, US seniors are suffering
C.At home vs Nursing home-a hard choice for US seniors
D.US adult children, it’s time to care for your parents

Dave McNee met Claudia Mandekic 14 years ago. When she told McNee how hard it could be to get students excited about math, her favourite discipline, he made a surprising suggestion: “Why not throw in something they enjoy, like sports?” The idea of mixing basketball and mathematics got its first shot in 2011, when the now colleagues — who had launched a tutoring non-profit — were invited to run a summer-school program for kids who’d failed Grade 9 math at Georges Secondary School.
When the students showed up for their first day, they weren’t exactly excited. Over the next few hours, Mandekic and McNee gave the kids techniques to improve their shooting while also helping them calculate their field-goal percentage — which, in turn, taught them about fractions and decimal (分数和小数) points. At the end of the game, the winning team was determined based on which group had the highest total percentage and had done the most efficient math. “When the bell rang, they were so fixated on collecting their data and figuring out which team won that they didn’t leave,” says Mandekic. “I realized we might be onto something.”
The classes, later named BallMatics, soon spread to other schools. “I was terrible at math,” says Douglas, who enrolled in a fast-track summer program. “But once I started BallMatics and realized the sport I loved was directly tied to math, it made me a lot better at it. Every time I played basketball, I was thinking about math.”
Almost any math problem, McNee and Mandekic realized, can be taught on the court. Kids can learn how to navigate an X-Y grid to find their next shooting spot or absorb the basic principles of trigonometry based on the angle at which they release the ball. In 2019, McNec and Mandekic established a private high school called Uchenna Academy. At the school, kids with top basketball skills can study all subjects, train at their sport and work part-time helping out with the BallMatics afterschool programs.
Douglas, now 20 and earning a degree in education believes the school’s commitment to academics is the key reason it’s been a winner. “If we didn’t do our work, we weren’t playing at the game,” he says, adding that coaches would bench kids who didn’t keep up in class. “At Uchenna, we were student athletes, not athlete students.”

This February, a pet owner left his mother cat and her kitten with a pet sitter from Xiaohongshu. Only three days later, both cats fell from the 19th floor and died. “The owner was in great emotional pain — he’d had the cats since they were little.” said Lawyer Cui. Instead of going to court, the two parties came to a deal with Cui’s assistance: the sitter would pay a few thousand yuan in small monthly parts.
Cui, 27, has practiced law in Chengdu since 2020 and went independent in 2023. At first, he handled many civil cases, but the heavy work tired him out. One late night, with his long-haired cat Ultraman quiet beside him, he had a sudden idea: “I love pets. Why not focus on legal problems about them?” This special area has few lawyers in China. Since then, Cui has taken cases like pet medical mistakes, sale lies, and accidental deaths.
A 2024 Goldman Sachs report says China’s pet number first passed kids under 4. By 2030, it may be nearly twice that. As pet ownership surges in China, such disputes (纠纷) are becoming more common. Pets are increasingly viewed as family members, yet the legal system has been slow to adapt.
China still lacks a dedicated animal protection law. Lawyers often use general rules from the Civil Code, which only bring light punishments. “The legal vacuum is the biggest challenge,” Cui said. “Without clear statutes, it’s difficult to protect pets or their owners effectively.”
Yet Cui remains optimistic. He started a WeChat group “Pet Legal Alliance” with over 1,000 lawyers (all pet owners too). They share resources and push for better rules. Cui likes to mediate (调解) instead of long court fights. Still, he believes change is coming. “Pets are not property. They are life companions. The law should reflect that,” he said.
17.What was the result of the two cats’ case?
A.It was put off for new evidence. B.It was successfully solved in court.
C.The lawyer helped reach a settlement. D.The sitter delayed repaying the owner.
18.Why did lawyer Cui decide to take pet-related work?
A.To follow his own heart. B.To decrease career risks.
C.To gain special inspiration. D.To lower his expectations.
19.What is the main purpose of mentioning the WeChat group?
A.To display the group’s daily activities. B.To stress pet topics’popularity online.
C.To point out the inefficiency of lawsuits. D.To showcase a joint effort for pet legal rights.
20.What can be inferred about Cui?
A.He is confused about civil cases. B.He is passionate about court fights.
C.He shows indifference to challenges. D.He possesses a sharp market awareness.

Over the past year, the Chicago Department of Transportation has completed 10 safety projects focused on protecting pedestrians (行人) and cyclists, particularly young people. These measures were introduced in response to accidents involving youth. Teens involved with West Town Bike — a nonprofit that runs cycling programs for students — have voiced concerns about cycling safety while also proposing concrete ideas for improvement.
Many of these students expressed mixed feelings about biking in the city: while they value the sense of freedom, they often do not feel safe. Their suggestions range from infrastructural (基础设施的) upgrades to educational initiatives. For example, David Harb from Lane Tech High School stressed the importance of safety training, such as hand signals, and recommended expanding National Walk and Bike to School Day to include high schools. He also proposed replacing stop signs with roundabouts to naturally slow traffic.
Other students highlighted issues with enforcement and infrastructure. Kaniyah Hale believes drivers who cause collisions with cyclists or pedestrians should receive stronger punishment. Armand Dunkines, who was hit while riding where a bike lane suddenly ends, urged the city to use data to guide bike lane placement and increase traffic law enforcement, especially on weekends. Tamara Scott, both a cyclist and a new driver, pointed out that bike lanes are frequently blocked by cars, emphasizing that motorists must be reminded they are sharing the road.
Christopher Garcia, an experienced cyclist, imagines a redesigned road system with separate spaces for bicycles and cars, along with shared zones. Together, these teens agree that making Chicago’s streets safer will require not only physical changes but also a shift in culture and attitudes among all road users.

Seventeen-year-old Dhanush Eashwar, who has started coding at 7, is one of the 2024 winners of Swift Student Challenge, which tasks young creators with developing apps that solve real-world problems. His submission, Finger Dance, aims to facilitate better communication between the deaf and hearing communities. Using machine learning and augmented reality, it recognizes users’ hand poses and classifies them as American Sign Language (ASL) letters, helping beginners learn ASL.
The winning program was developed specifically for the challenge and isn’t in app stores. But the high school senior is working hard on an even more ambitious project that he says will be available to download in the future: an app that translates ASL hand signs to English in real-time — “like a Google Translate for visual languages,” he explained.

In May, 2025, four British men have successfully completed a high-speed expedition (探险) on Mount Everest, reaching the peak in just five days.
Garth Miller, Alistair Carns, Anthony Stazicker and Kevin Godlington climbed the towering peak with help from the Austrian guiding company Furtenbach Adventures. The team also included five Sherpa guides and a cameraman. But these were not the deciding factors for their success. Climbers who want to climb Everest typically must spend weeks or months getting used to the thin air, but this team finished much faster. Their success came from months of home preparation: They slept in special low-oxygen tents to mimic (模仿) the effects of high mountains, and exercised while wearing equipment that reduced oxygen intake.
Additionally, the climbers received a special treatment in Germany: breathing a small amount of xenon (氙气) mixed with oxygen for under an hour. Discovered in the 1800s, this gas has medical uses and may help the body handle thin air. The team hoped the xenon treatment might give them an extra boost, but they admitted it wasn’t essential. However, the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation(ICMF)argues there’s no proof that xenon improves mountain performance, and wrong use can be risky.
Some mountaineers oppose xenon gas. They see it as an unfair advantage. “If you’re promoting xenon as a performance enhancer, but you’re not also willing to examine what that means for fairness and integrity in the mountains, it’s a problem,” says Adrian Ballinger, an American mountain guide who leads Everest expeditions.
Using xenon could let climbers spend less time and money preparing in Nepal. Nepalese tourism officials said they didn’t know the British team planned to climb Everest without standard preparation. “We’ll discuss this and decide future policies,” stated tourism director Narayan Regmi. The climbers noted that Everest expeditions now accept practices once forbidden, like extra oxygen or helicopter flights to base camp. They argued their fast climb reduced risks and environmental harm.
29.What’s the main reason for the four men’s reaching the peak in just five days?
A.They consulted a specific company. B.They had enough training at home.
C.They hired experienced guides. D.They carried unusual oxygen.
30.What was the four climbers’ purpose in using xenon?
A.To fight against the ICMF’s comments on it. B.To test its actual effectiveness on climbers.
C.To promote more applications in medicine. D.To add more assurance to their expedition.
31.Why do some mountaineers object to the use of xenon?
A.It is considered an unfair shortcut. B.It has questionable effects.
C.It destroys the environment. D.It brings them less profit.
32.What might be Nepal officials’ attitude to using xenon in climbing mountains?
A.Dismissive. B.Disapproving. C.Tolerant. D.Appreciative.

Gyeongyun Lily Min spent the last seven months in a makeshift laboratory she set up in her parent’s garage, working hard to turn vibrations produced by sound waves in sports arenas into electrical energy.
The 17-year-old rising senior’s idea began to take shape when watching Disney’s Monsters, Inc. In the 2001 film, energy is generated from children’s screams. Without the cruelty, Gyeongyun thought, the concept could help meet the global demand for sustainable energy.
“I began to wonder if, in reality, with the help of piezoelectric effect (压电效应), we could use the abundant noise in environments like sports arenas to generate electricity.” explains Gyeongyun. Certain materials in the environment produce large amounts of mechanical energy as vibrations or shocks. This energy is largely wasted. However, with the piezoelectric effect, it is possible to change this energy into electric energy. Mixing her curiosity with her passion for science and innovation, the young student set out to explore a new way to meet global energy demands and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.
Today, with over 60 percent of global electricity generated by fossil fuels, the world continues to be heavily dependent on non-renewable energy sources. According to a recent report by the World Nuclear Association, which promotes the global nuclear energy industry, over 40 percent of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year are due to the burning of fossil fuels for electricity generation.
With her eco-friendly technology, Gyeongyun secured a spot as a finalist in this year’s Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, the world’s largest global science competition for high school students.
According to Gyeongyun, a sports arena is the suitable location for her project because it represents a unique environment with lots of noise of the cheering crowds, announcements and music.
“Although this technology is not yet realistically applicable due to the current limitations in the sensitivity and efficiency of piezoelectric materials, by advancing the quality of piezoelectric devices, we can unlock a new way of sustainable energy production, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.” she says.

The path network across Wales has been underfunded for years and it is becoming less and less accessible. This comes at a time when more and more people are exploring the outdoors.
Ramblers Cymru, a walking group, is launching a campaign calling on the Welsh Government to support a green recovery by investing in paths and access nationally to boost health an access to nature.
Angela Charlton, Director of Ramblers Cymru said, “We believe that people should not only have the right to access the outdoors but also know where they can access it. Missing and broken signage and blockages on the paths are becoming too common barriers to the enjoyment of being outdoors.”
“The path network is part of our cultural heritage, connecting communities and providing us with the all-important health and well-being benefits we need,” Angela said.
Ramblers Cymru hoped that 10% of the active travel budget arranged for public rights of way improvements would go some way to help the local authorities tackle the problems on the network. Alongside this, they would like to see a monitoring system in which local authorities are funded to monitor the paths, so they have a clear idea of the condition they are in and where the most extra investment is needed.
“Having been declared a national asset (资产) by the Welsh Government, our network needs to be protected and kept tabs on properly, so that we can build a healthier nation where people are connected to nature close to their communities,” Angela said.
Angela also added, “We want to be part of the solution and are already working on projects that support volunteers and local councils to take ownership of local paths, but so much more needs to be done.” Following the campaign, they will be submitting the pledges (誓言) to the Welsh Government in the autumn.
37.What is Ramblers Cymru’s purpose in launching a campaign?
A.To help people travel outdoors. B.To aid the government to invest.

C.Enjoy staying in nature. D.Set up more communities.
39.What is Ramblers Cymru’s suggestion about the monitoring system?
A.The local authorities should fund it. B.The public should be responsible for it.
C.It should cost most of the active travel budget. D.It should be mainly used for checking on the paths.
40.What do the underlined words “kept tabs on” in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A.Changed. B.Removed. C.Monitored. D.Listed.

Shanghai’s urban greening department has launched a new program to protect old and valuable trees. The program requires regular inspections of trees over 100 years old. For those with diseased branches or unstable roots, arborists will carry out targeted treatments. These include pruning dead branches, injecting pest - resistant chemicals and installing supporting brackets. The department emphasized that these measures are crucial to prevent the trees from withering. What’s more, the public is forbidden from engaging in activities that may damage the trees, such as carving on the trunks or tying ropes to the branches. Anyone who violates the rule will face a fine.
What does the underlined word “pruning” probably mean?
A. Cutting off B. Watering C. Measuring D. Protecting
答案:A
例如 “Unlike the tedious lecture, the workshop was engaging”,由 unlike 可判断 tedious 与 engaging 是反义。

1.Which of the following statements about Lockdown Mode is true according to the passage?
A.It turns on automatically for all Apple devices.
B.It secures mobile devices with high-end hardware.
C.It reduces spyware profits with improved safeguards.
D.It enjoys great popularity among Apple users lately.
2.The phrase “such immunity” in paragraph 4 most probably refers to_______.
D.Apple attaches great importance to the security of its users
4.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

【答案】5.B 6.A 7.B 8.C

13.The first two paragraphs are intended to tell the readers ______.
A.the origin of BallMatics B.the challenges facing BallMatics
C.the start of a lifelong friendship D.the dedication of the young teachers
14.What made Mandekic and McNee realize that they “might be onto something”?
A.The students’ progress in their mathematic skills.
B.The students’ changed attitude towards math.
C.The data collected about the students’ goal percentage.
D.The efficiency in determining the winning team.
15.What will happen to the kids who don’t do well in class according to Douglas?
A.They will be forbidden to leave any training session.
B.They will be obliged to earn a training degree first.
C.They will have to attend classes at a private school.
D.They will be banned from playing in the game.

“I felt that there was a need for technology to actually bridge the gap between both of the communities,” explained Eashwar, who isn’t deaf himself but took ASL in high school. After attending some deaf events around the region, he realized he had an opportunity. “Machine learning is being used in so many different fields, but something that everyone has is their phone, and that’s in their pocket.”

38.What does Angela Charlton probably expect the government to do?
A.Turn to common people. B.Restore the signs on the paths.
D.Listed.
