Four Excellent Museums for Kids to Explore
An injection of knowledge, Leeds
The Thackray Museum of Medicine in Leeds is giving a huge makeover recently. It features a Victorian street full of real smells and bugs, and presents shows of the impact of some terrible infectious diseases — cholera and smallpox before vaccinations. There are talks, displays, games as well as some information about health heroes over the years.
Adults: £12; children aged 5-15: £10; children under 5: free.
Follow that train, Walthamstow, London
A huge steam engine stands at the entrance to the small, indoor-outdoor Walthamstow Pumphouse Museum. Two 1967 Victoria Line carriages sit side by side with the cabs open to the would-be train drivers. Fireman Frank display s the fire engine featured in TV programs such as London’s Burning.
Free entrance.
Life through a lens, Edinburgh
The Camera Obscura and World of Illusions experience in Edinburgh presents a unique view of the city in the past. With over 100 interactive exhibits on five floors, it is completely kid-friendly with no “don’t touch” signs. There’s a perspective room where younger children can dance with their own shadow, match their face with a monkey’s, serve their head on a plate and even lie on a shark.
Adults: £16; children aged 5-15: £12; children under 5: free.
Go back in time, Chichester, West Sussex
Anybody who wants to see, touch and even smell what life was like in ancient times should head to the Weald and Downland Living Museum — a museum with rural buildings ranging from early medieval England to the Victorian Age, and a multisensory, living presentation. There are also farm animals to visit, a wood and playground to burn off energy, and traditional games in one big house if it rains.
Family ticket: £42.

At first sight, Easthope doesn’t seem much like a Cassandra (希腊神话人物). She smiles a lot. Her manner is kind and motherly; pushed to name her profession, you might guess at nurse or teacher. But look closer.
Easthope is an emergency planner whose job is to support the survivors of major disasters, in which capacity she acted following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the fire at Grenfell Tower. For two decades, the public knew nothing about this vital work, which went on behind the scenes, though she was hugely admired in what we might call professional disaster circles: a voice of calm and a fountain of wisdom. But in 2023, she published a best-selling book about her career, When the Dust Settles, and that changed. People became very interested in what she did.
“At literary festivals, most authors get questions about their writing process,” Easthope says. “But I wouldn’t get those. What people wanted from me was to know how I lived with the knowledge that I have. Wasn’t I afraid? How did I handle it? I would tell them that I didn’t live afraid, and I would give them basic advice. But this wasn’t enough.” In the end, she felt she had no choice but to write a second book, one in which she would try to cover all that she has learned for the benefit of each individual.
While her publisher describes Come What May as a road map for resilience (韧性), the word is one Easthope dislikes. Ready, she suggests, is a better one. Easthope also reminds people that small things, like losing hair during illness or consuming too much food after someone dies, still matter. She encourages people to remember, not to forget, what happened during disasters, because such events leave a long-lasting effect.
4. What might a Cassandra be like according to paragraph 1?
A. Friendly and energetic. B. Competent and cautious.
C. Cheerful and easy-going. D. Serious and unapproachable.
5. What led to increased public awareness of Easthope’s work in 2023?
A. The publication of a best seller.
B. Her involvement in 2004 tsunami relief.
C. The growth of professional disaster circles.
D. Her sudden rise to fame through media.
6. Why are readers’ questions cited in paragraph 3?
A. To reveal Easthope’s personal fears.
B. To explain Easthope’s writing process.
C. To showcase Easthope’s writing motivation.
D. To present public doubts about Easthope’s work.
7. What does Easthope agree on handling disasters?
A. Forgetting aids recovery.
B. Resilience matters most.
C. Positive thinking takes the lead.
D. Minor sufferings deserve attention.

Artificial Intelligence(AI) is increasingly seen not just as a tool, but as a potential method in environmental protection. AI can help reduce global warming, improve resource use, and develop our ability to deal with environmental problems. Yet with great power comes responsibility. A recent study discovers that if it is not carefully designed and controlled, the very technologies for helping may create the environmental harms that have never been faced.
After studying five key areas where AI can be especially effective, the study shows that in the areas responsible for nearly half of global emissions (排放), AI applications could help to lower greenhouse gas emissions. But there are trade-offs. According to the study, a lot of harms have appeared: training large models uses a lot of electricity and water; setting them widely increases energy needs; and carrying necessary hardware adds environmental footprint. The study report warns these costs might reduce benefits unless actively managed.
While AI for environmental protection is a promising direction, its success depends on governance and values. To achieve that goal, several practices are necessary: setting environmental impact assessment (评价); building energy-efficient architectures; using renewable energy; ensuring that communities likely to be affected have a voice; and widening social frameworks to contain more-than-human concerns. Furthermore, the social impact must be taken seriously. Different from the previous discovery, the report argues that AI has so far overlooked the impact on ecosystems, animals, plants and climate. It suggests using more reasonable methods to ensure a balance between harms and benefits, wise decision-making, and the effect of non-human factors in management.
In conclusion, AI has the potential to be valuable for protecting the environment — but only if we consider responsible designs and regulations that go beyond human-only concerns. If we do, AI can strengthen human efforts, not weaken them.
8. What is the possible effect of AI according to the study?
A. Affecting global climate. B. Wasting valuable resources.
C. Causing environmental problems. D. Weakening human ability.
9. Which of the following has a similar meaning to “But there are trade-offs.”?
A. Every coin has two sides. B. Well begun is half done.
C. Rome wasn’t built in one day. D. Every cloud has a silver lining.
10. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Energy saving has been overstated. B. All communities should have a voice.
C. Human-only factors need considering. D. Proper intervention is essential.
11. What is the writer’s attitude toward AI in protecting the environment?
A. Appreciative. B. Cautious. C. Negative. D. Indifferent.
D
Recent research challenges decades of belief about money and happiness. While past studies claimed wealth weakly affects happiness in rich nations, new findings prove income comparison powerfully shapes joy. The key is “relative wealth” — feeling richer than others brings more happiness than high income or education alone.
Researchers analyzed 357 global surveys covering 2.3 million people. Participants ranked themselves on a 10-level “status ladder (地位等级)” comparing their position to society. Results revealed social comparison drives over 70% of money’s impact on happiness — far outweighing actual resources. “Money gains power when measured against others,” explains lead researcher Dr. Lee.
The researchers also found that the effect of social comparison was stronger in countries, such as Singapore. Resource competition forces constant social evaluation. Yet upward comparisons often backfire. As Mark Twain observed, “Comparison is the death of joy.” Having just a little more money than your parents doesn’t bring much satisfaction, because nowadays the neighbors are clearly much wealthier.
Critically, economic growth sometimes fails to improve national happiness. Why? The study suggests unequal progress makes many feel left behind despite personal gains. True well-being requires advancing both personally and relatively within society’s position ladder. Lawmakers thus must balance wealth creation with fair competition policies.
12. How does the study measure “relative wealth”?
A. By measuring education levels. B. By using a 10-level status ladder.
C. By researching job satisfaction forms. D. By analyzing spending habits.
13. Why does the author mention Mark Twain’s words?
A. To criticize social comparison. B. To claim historical wisdom is outdated.
C. To emphasize Singapore’s uniqueness. D. To indicate money’s declining importance.
14. What can be inferred about traditional economic policies?
A. They overvalue absolute income growth. B. They effectively use social comparison.
C. They prioritize education over wealth. D. They ignore resource competition.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Absolute Wealth: Real Path to Happiness
B. Why Money Fails to Buy Joy in Modern Society
C. The Hidden Power of Relative Wealth Comparison
D. Education vs. Income: New Research Findings

The corner of 71st Street and Prospect was my corner. Nobody else seemed to want it, anyway. Most people looked at it and said there was nothing there, just an empty land. But they weren’t looking hard enough. My corner was like a wide-open treasure box.
Some days, when my sisters were chasing each other, and my brothers were yelling, and I felt like the walls of our apartment were about to burst, I ran down to my corner. I forced through the tall grass. Butterflies scared up at my feet. I was careful not to step on the flowers that grew here. If I was really quiet, the birds went on about their business all around me. I sat down, closed my eyes and listened to their songs. The grass smelled clean and fresh. The sun warmed my skin, and I wondered why I was the only one who was thankful for this place.
One evening, Mama said, “Tia, the city wants to pave over that corner of yours and turn it into a parking lot. It is in the paper today.”
I stopped in my tracks. “Not my corner, Mama! It’s ours! They couldn’t do that!”
“They could and they would,” said Mama, “unless somebody stands up against it and say no.”
“It just needs some cleaning up, that is all. How come they couldn’t see that?” I ran to my room and slammed the door. From my window, I could see my corner. Where would the birds and butterflies go when it was all blacktop and concrete? Mama knocked softly at the door and stepped in.
“Tia, you see something in that corner that most people don’t. You get to make them see what you see. Make some noise about it. Your siblings (兄弟姐妹) and I will back you up — no one ever got any place by sitting back.”
That night, I was thinking about what Mama had said to me. In my heart, I knew she was right. I had to do something. Without hesitation, I painted a big cardboard with NO PARKING LOT! SAVE OUR NATURE! in large letters.

【答案】范文:
Dear Peter,
I know you’re upset and I understand how you feel.
It’s kind of you to stick to your principle, and what you did is right because copying homework won’t help your friend learn. Here are some suggestions. First, you can send him a short message to explain why you refused, telling him that you care about his study and want to help him with difficult problems. Second, if he’s still upset, you can invite him to a coffee and talk face to face, which might make things clearer.
I hope you two can make up soon and your friendship will become stronger.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】Early the next morning, I dragged the cardboard down to the corner. Golden sunlight filtered through tall grass as I set up a shaky chair to hold the sign high. At first, people hurried past — some glanced and shook heads, while others ignored it. My hands ached from gripping the cardboard, but I persisted. When discouraged, I heard my siblings; they ran over with colored paper signs. Mama followed, bringing water and gloves, saying, “Let’s clean up while waiting.” Soon, neighbors started to join. The once-quiet corner was now filled with the sound of our busy hands and soft chats.
Late that night, when I was with my siblings, Mum stormed in, “The corner stays ours” I shot up from the couch, my heart racing, and threw my arms around her. My brothers cheered and my sisters clapped their hands, jumping up and down. Mama smiled, then looked at me. “You did this, Tia. You stood up for what you believed in.” I felt a warm glow in my chest, glancing at my siblings’ grinning faces. “Not just me,” I said. “We did it — all of us.” Mama nodded, squeezing my hand. At that moment, I felt so proud that we fought together for the things that really mattered.
