STEP4. TEST (检,练)
A healthy coral reef is far from quiet. It buzzes with a symphony of marine life. But as reefs degrade due to bleaching(珊瑚白化), pollution, and overfishing, they turn silent, driving away fish and other key species that keep the ecosystem functional. To overturn this, a team of UK and Australian scientists led by Tim Gordon tested a sound-based approach at Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
The team placed underwater speakers in severely damaged coral areas. These speakers broadcast recordings of sounds from thriving reefs. Control sites without speakers were set up nearby for comparison. The results, published in Nature, were striking: sound-playing sites attracted twice as many fish as control areas. The number of fish species present also rose by 50%.
Returning fish play a vital role in reef recovery, which eat algae that damages coral polyps, clearing space for new growth, while predators keep the food web balanced.Studies by other teams found that healthy reef sounds can also boost coral larval settlement—a key step in reef regrowth. Larvae use sound cues to find suitable habitats, and enriched sounds increase their chance of settling in degraded areas. This dual benefit makes sounds enrichment a promising tool for reef restoration projects worldwide.
The scientists stressed that sound alone cannot fully restore a dead reef. It must be paired with other measures, such as reducing local pollution, limiting overfishing, and establishing marine protected areas (MPAs). Climate change, the root cause of widespread bleaching, also needs global action to control rising ocean temperatures.
While the method is low-cost and easy to apply, challenges remain. Speakers need regular maintenance and power supply in tough marine environments. Still, the approach offers a glimmer of hope for one of Earth’s most threatened ecosystems.
1. What is the main purpose of the scientists' testing the sound-based approach?
A. To collect sounds of different marine species in the Great Barrier Reef
B. To address the problem of degraded reefs by attracting key species back
C. To prove that healthy reefs are noisier than damaged ones
D. To design more advanced underwater speakers for marine research
命题点_______:__________________________________→locate para___________→reason key sentence

3. Why are returning fish important for reef recovery?
A. They can directly reduce the rate of coral bleaching caused by climate change
B. They help create soundscapes that attract coral larvae to the reef
C. They perform roles like eating harmful algae and balancing the food web
D. They build new habitats for coral polyps by digging in the seabed
