Passage 1
(24-25学年九年级上·红桥区·期末)
Since tea spread from China worldwide, it has become one of the most popular drinks in the world. Different countries have their own tea cultures, like afternoon tea in England.
The tradition of afternoon tea is a very special part of English culture. The custom of drinking tea became popular in England during the 1660s. It was not until the mid-19th century that the idea of “afternoon tea” first appeared.
Afternoon tea is served in the mid-afternoon, between lunch and a late dinner. The idea came from Anna, the seventh Duchess (公爵夫人) of Bedford, in 1840. At the time, many families would eat a late dinner at about 8 pm, which was one of only two main meals each day, and the other was a mid-morning meal.
With a long time between breakfast and dinner, Anna would become hungry around 4 o’clock in the afternoon. So she asked some tea, bread, butter and cakes to be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her.
Later, Anna continued it, sending cards to her friends asking them to join her for “tea and a walking in the fields”.
Others soon picked up on (注意到) the idea. By the 1880s, afternoon tea became an event for many ladies. They would be dressed beautifully to be served in the sitting room between four and five o’clock, talking about the latest news, their daily life and fashion.
Today’s afternoon tea is simpler than traditional afternoon tea. It is just a biscuit or small cake and a cup of tea. However, there is one thing that has never changed—the meaning of afternoon tea.

You don’t have to be old to be an inventor. Frank Epperson invented the Popsicle when he was just eleven years old. One winter day in 1905, after a day of play, he left his drink outside with the stir stick (搅拌棒), he found his drink was frozen like an icicle (冰柱). Frank tasted it and found it was delicious. And it became a hit with his friends.
When he grew up, Frank Epperson sold land and houses for a living. By 1921 he had to make a living for his wife and five children. But Frank never forgot the frozen treat (冰品) that he had discovered. He decided to continue with it. He soon started a business—selling the frozen treats in seven flavours (口味). He named the ice on a stick “Epsicle”. His children didn’t think that was a very good name. They called the frozen treat “Pop’s sicle”. The name was later changed to “Popsicle”. In 1924 Frank got a patent (专利) for his frozen treat.
During the late 1920s and the 1930s, the United States went through hard times. Many people lost their jobs. Twin ice pops (双棒棒冰) with two sticks were invented. They were just five cents and two children could share them.

Pollution inside homes and other buildings kills more than 4 million people each year. Many people die as a result of breathing smoke or from cooking over wood﹣powered of coal﹣powered stoves.
One way to reduce the number of deaths is through cooking equipment powered by the sun.Crosby Menzies,a solar power expert in a South African company, described his latest solar cooker called the“Sol.4”,”It is four square meters of mirrors, six to eight meters in length. It is quite a large cooler.”
The“Sol.4”works by reflecting (反射)light from the sun off large mirrors. The mirrors direct (把…对准)the light at a cooking pan. Then the light heats the pan with solar energy.Within two minutes, the pan is hot enough to cook sausages and onions. In just four minutes, water can be boiled. That is as fast as cooking with natural gas or electricity.
The cooker is also much “friendlier” than other models because people do not have to stand in the sun to use it.And people can prepare meals without having to collect firewood or spend money on coal.Such individuals would be less likely to have breathing illnesses from harmful smoke.
At present, the cooker only works when the sun is shining. But engineers are working on a way to make it work without sunlight.
Each cooker costs about $2000,which is a large amount of money for most Africans. To solve that problem,Crosby Menzies has crated a non﹣governmental organization called solar Cookers for Africa. It plans to raise money through donations to provide poor people with solar cooking equipment.

D.reduce the number of deaths caused by harmful smoke.
38.The underlined word “individuals“ most probably means“ ”
A.cookers B.mirrors C.people D.experts
39.Which of the following about the “Sol﹣4”is TRUE?
A.It is six to eight square meters of mirrors.
B.It can work in any weather condition now
C.It can also heat the pan by lighting firewood
D.It is more environment﹣friendly than other cookers.
40.From the passage,we can infer that .
A.the “Sol﹣4”will be designed in a smaller size
B.more African can use the solar cookers in the future
C.the “Sol﹣4”is the first product of the south African company
D.the African government will provide poor people with solar cookers.

Thanks to technology, the way people communicate with others has greatly changed. Now we live in a world with mobile phones. Our life has become easier since the invention of the mobile phones.
I ordered some snacks on my phone yesterday afternoon. Once I got home from work that evening, I saw they were already at my door. So fast! Have you ever thought about how people in the past communicated and did things without mobile phones? Take the post for example. Before phones, if you wanted to keep in touch with someone far away, you needed to send them a letter in the mail. When my mum was in primary school, she used to do this with her “pen pal”. A pen pal is a name for a person you keep in touch with mainly through postal mail. My mum would write to her pen pal every few months, and then, after a little while, her pen pal would write back. Later, once email became a common thing, sending letters in the post was so slow to people. It became known as “snail mail”!
What if you were at an airport in the time before mobile phones? My dad said that in the 1970s there used to be message boards at some airports. If you needed to exit (离开) the airport and wanted to leave a message for a friend who would be arriving later, you could write them a message and stick it on the message board. Then, your friend could go check the board later and see what you wrote to them!
So the ways that people use to communicate are becoming easier and quicker.
56.How is our life with the invention of the mobile phones according to the writer?
A.Boring. B.Easy. C.Tiring. D.Hard.
57.What does the underlined word “they” refer to in Paragraph 2?
A.Some snacks. B.Some books. C.Some phones. D.Some letters.
58.How did the writer’s mum keep in touch with her pen pal?
A.By calling her. B.By using computers.
C.By writing letters. D.By sending messages.
59.Why does the writer use “snail mail” in Paragraph 2?
A.Because the writer likes writing letters. B.Because the writer likes sending letters.
C.Because sending letters in the post is fast. D.Because sending letters in the post is slow.
60.What does the passage mainly talk about?

Passage 2
(24-25学年九年级上·滨海新区·期末)
Last week, Chicago became the first city in the US to join the “Lights Out Plan”. People turned off the lights in the city’s tallest buildings after midnight so that thousands of birds could get to their winter homes. Every year in autumn, some birds fly over Chicago on their way to the south, and come back the next spring.
Lights mean danger to birds. Birds find their way by looking at the stars in the sky. Lights in tall buildings are so bright that birds may mistake them as stars. This means they can not find the right way to go back home. It’s a pity that a lot of birds even die from lights.
This month, about 300 kinds of birds are flying over Chicago to go back to the south to live through the cold winter. Birds fly to warmer places for a few reasons. Many birds cannot live in the cold, so they fly to warmer places. But there are other reasons, too. Birds need to look for food in the south. Another reason is that they want to have baby birds. Many birds like to have their baby birds in the same “house” they lived in last year, so they fly back there. At the same time, birds give their young a better chance of growing up, avoid being eaten by predators (捕食者) . There are about 9, 000 kinds of birds in the world, and about 600 kinds of birds migrate. Some birds can fly a very long way. Sometimes they fly to other countries. We have fewer birds today because there are fewer places for birds.
36.Why did people in Chicago turn off their lights last week?
A.Because they wanted to save money.
B.Because they liked the dark night.
C.Because they were afraid that birds would make much noise.
D.Because they were afraid that birds would lose their home way.
37.How do birds find their way?

Waste recycling is a big problem for most countries around the world. Many countries are trying to think of ways to solve it. But most of the ways are not very successful. However, Germany has done a good job in dealing with its waste. It recycles more waste than any other country in Europe. Today, its recycling is close to 80% of its waste.
The German government set up an organization to charge companies for the things they use to package (包装) products. The more things they use, the more the companies will pay. The purpose is to reduce waste before anyone buys a product. Germany has also reduced glass and plastic garbage by giving money to people who find and return bottles and other items.
To help make recycling easier, recycling bins (回收箱) in Germany come in different colors. Paper goes in the blue bin, and plastic goes in the yellow bin. The brown bin is for kitchen waste and other organic (有机的) waste while the black or grey bin is for everything else. People have to sort (把……分类) their rubbish before throwing it away. Some of the garbage can be turned into new things. For example, kitchen waste is turned into compost (混合肥料). Germany deals with two-thirds of its rubbish by recycling.
What’s more, the German government will burn the garbage that cannot be recycled. Burning the waste can produce electricity, which only creates a small amount of ash (灰烬).
Germany can do this because people agree with the government. They think that recycling is important for everyone.
36.In Germany, the recycling of the waste is close to ________ today.

A.Leaving a message is useful. B.Sending letters in the post is popular.
