Four Best Beach Spots in South Carolina
Morris Island
What was once a war fort (堡垒) is now an island without residents in the Charleston Harbor marked by the state’s tallest lighthouse. Today, this island is only accessible by boat. While boat rentals are available, it is highly recommended that visitors book one of the tours that will take you to the island with a local expert who can tell you all about the area’s history and marine life.
Huntington Beach State Park
Located between Myrtle Beach and Georgetown, Huntington Beach State Park offers historic sites, fishing, hiking, guided walks, and, of course, a three-mile beach. There are over 300 species of birds here, making the park a wonderland for birders. Visitors can also spot deer, sea turtles, and more. Plus, camping is available at the park for those who want to spend more time enjoying its natural beauty.
Surfside Beach
Also known as “The Family Beach”, Surfside Beach’s focus on families goes beyond its nickname—it identified itself as the first autism-friendly (自闭症友好) travel destination in the world in January 2016. Visitors can approach the sandy beach from 36 different entry points, some of which provide wheel chair access. There are also mini-golf courses and plenty of restaurants to choose from.
Fripp Island
Head for this small region for kayaking, golfing, and breathtaking natural views. Watch some of the 175 species of birds that live along the ocean and salt marsh(沼泽), or other local animals such as alligators, dolphins, and loggerhead turtles. Book a place with a marsh view at Fripp Island Golf & Beach Resort to enjoy pools, on-site dining, and the busy activity center.

As I was engaged in cutting lettuce in the kitchen, it suddenly occurred to me that I had seen a video on regrowing a whole new lettuce from its stub by placing it in water. Without hesitation, I took out a wide-mouthed mug, put the lettuce stub into it, added some water, and then set it near the window.
On a snowy morning, I spotted the first sign of life. A small leaf began to stretch out from its center, like a tiny green flag of hope — beaten, yet not defeated. Within just a few days, the cuts where I had removed the leaves were no longer visible; the growth was incredibly rapid. When I lifted the blossoming head out of the mug, tiny root threads fell down, reaching for the soil. Lettuce or hope?
Put in the lettuce’s position, I’d likely be doubtful initially, carefully sizing up my new environment before wholeheartedly diving into the process of growing. But this lettuce didn’t need much — just a bit of water and a place near the window is enough to decide it was going to thrive again. It grew in a mug of water, in faith. This is the heart of this lettuce: alive, strong and fearless. It deserved a name .I decided to call it Monty.
Monty wanted to grow, as we all do. I think I gave him a little love and freedom. Those two ingredients were all he needed to return to himself. I see joy in this lettuce. The return to self is always an expression of joy, which is life itself. With the right ingredients, this is the tendency of all living things.
Monty still lives in a mug, but I’m going to transplant him outside. He deserves to become his full self. The only problem I see now is my capacity to support Monty. I hope I have enough of a green finger.
I’m surprised to find myself where I am. Maybe Monty is, too. I have the same choice as he does: give in and decay (腐烂),or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave.
4. Why did the author put the stub in water?
A. To hope that it would grow. B. To decorate the nice mug
C. To conduct an experiment. D. To remove his bad mood.
5. What is the first sign of life in the author’s eyes?
A. The remaining stub. B. The small leaf.
C. The disappearing cuts. D. The tiny root threads.
6. How would the author feel if in the lettuce’s situation?
A. Hesitant. B. Fearless. C. Confident. D. Annoyed.
7. Which can be a suitable title of the passage?
A. Enjoy your own life to the fullest. B. Believe in yourself when in trouble.
C. Never be afraid to restart yourself. D. Give freedom to the heart in a way.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. A 7. C

AI has advanced significantly over the years. However, its current models largely disregard human psychology, such as emotional intelligence.
“The main focus of our work was how we could bring the emotional part of intelligence to AI,” says Saptarshi Das, associate professor at Penn State. “Human behavior is easy to observe but difficult to measure and that makes it difficult to replicate (复制) in a robot and make it emotionally intelligent. There is no real way right now to do that.”
Eating habits serve as a prime example of this emotional intelligence. While hunger is the physiological drive to eat, our choices of what to eat are influenced by our sense of taste. As Das explains, even when one is not hungry, the psychological desire can drive him or her to consume a sweet treat, rather than a piece of meat.
To grasp the intricacies (错综复杂的细节) of taste, Penn State researchers looked to the human tongue, which translates chemical data into electrical signals sent to the brain’s gustatory cortex (味觉皮层). In this brain region, complex neuronal networks shape our sense of taste. To imitate this, the team created an electronic “tongue”.
This technology can be adapted to recognize all primary taste characteristics, from sweet and salty to umami (鲜味). Looking ahead, the researchers see numerous applications, including AI-designed diets based on emotional preferences or tailored restaurant meal suggestions.
The team’s immediate goal is to expand the electronic tongue’s capacity. “We are trying to imitate the 10,000 or so taste receptors (味蕾) we have on our tongue that are each slightly different compared to the others, which enables us to distinguish between small differences in tastes,” says Das. “The example I think of is people who train their tongue and become a wine taster. Perhaps in the future, we can have an AI system that you can train to be an even better wine taster.”
Beyond taste, the team wants to broaden this concept to other senses, leading to a more comprehensive and emotionally intelligent AI system.
8. What can be learned from the first two paragraphs?
A. It is necessary to make robots emotionally intelligent.
B. It is hard to make robots emotionally intelligent.
C. Emotional intelligence is complex and difficult to observe.
D. Few researchers pay attention to emotional intelligence of AI.
9. What might this electronic tongue be applied to in the future?
A. Evaluating people’s diet plans. B. Designing a healthier diet plan for people.
C. Correcting people’s poor dietary preferences. D. Helping restaurants serve customers better.
10. What is the team’s plan according to the last two paragraphs?
A. Improving people’s taste sensitivity with the electronic tongue.
B. Making the electronic tongue available for everyone.
C. Bringing all the human senses into the AI system.
D. Attracting the attention of other researchers to AI’s innovation.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. The progress in bringing emotional intelligence into AI.

New evidence suggests that studying Chinese and learning to write Chinese characters may train cognitive (认知的) abilities, which are not developed by learning other languages and writing systems.
A study conducted by researchers from the UK’s Wellcome Trust found that people who speak Chinese use both temporal lobes (颞叶) of their brain to understand the language. This is very different from English-language speakers who use only the left temporal lobe. Speakers of Chinese use intonation (语调) to tell between completely different meanings of particular words, which needs stronger cognitive abilities.
Besides, the practice of handwriting, especially of Chinese characters, will aid the development of motor skills, learning shapes and letters and will keep the mind sharp. Through the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, researchers found that neural (神经的) activity in children who practiced printing letters by hand was more strengthened than those who just looked at them. Compared with English, mostly written in line and from left to right, Chinese characters have more complex in structure (复杂的结构). Their writing involves strokes (笔画) in all four directions: up, down, left, and right. The movement of the fingers and hand helps improve neural activity in the working, thinking, and memory of the brain of the learners.
Evidence also suggests that there is a connection between the learning of Chinese and math skills. Researchers from New Zealand noticed that Asian children educated in their own languages appear to have gained a greater understanding of math ideas than English-speaking children. During the natural learning process of Chinese, the student is learning basic math ideas. Math skills are included in character writing because it includes skills such as counting, grouping, ordering, and identifying similarities and differences.
While the research on the relationship between the learning of Chinese and cognition is not yet fully clear, there is good evidence to suggest that learning Chinese tones and characters represents an added challenge to language learning.
12. What is the text centred on?
A. Why Asian children are better at math test.
B. Why Chinese is a difficult language to learn.
C. How learning Chinese benefits our cognition.
D How Chinese writing differs from English writing.
13. What does the study by UK’s Wellcome Trust show?
A. English speakers should learn Chinese.
B. Chinese has more intonations than English.
C. Using Chinese needs a higher-level brain activity.
D. Mastering different meanings of Chinese is difficult.
14. Why is learning Chinese beneficial to solving math problems?
A. They need quite different cognitive abilities. B. Chinese writing looks like math symbols.
C. Chinese children naturally do well in math. D. They share several key cognitive abilities.
15. How is the text mainly developed?
A. By offering supporting findings. B. By comparing former research.
C. By discussing problems and solutions. D. By listing advantages and disadvantages.
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. D 15. A

第二节:七选五 (共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
My neighbor has a beautiful lawn. He hates to see even one weed in it. I understand his feelings but I accept a little more of a natural look. Every year, the spring rains cause weeds to appear everywhere, especially in the lawn. ____16____ There is one weed killer for killing weeds in paths, another for killing weeds in flower beds, another for killing grass in flower beds and yet another for killing weeds in grass.
One day when I got home from work, he was killing the dandelions (蒲公英) growing at the side of my house. “I’m sure that you will be happy with me killing these weeds for you,” he said.
Knowing he meant well, I thanked him. ____17____ I happen to like dandelions. For me, even in something as simple as a dandelion, there is art. In fact, there is even poetry in a dandelion!
____18____ They certainly do grow where nothing else does, like along the side of my house. The flowers are a pretty bright yellow. They form their own picture of golden color around my washing line, something like a crazy artwork.
The flowers also add fine flavor and color when dropped in ice water. ____19____ They also add vitamins. I’ve been told that the leaves and roots contain vitamins A, B and C as well as minerals such as iron and calcium. It does not taste that great, but it certainly is good for you.
Actually, dandelions are common and delicate, so we label them weeds and kill them. But I say that they are works of art, carefully made by nature’s magical hand. As the season progresses, the flower turns into puffy seeds that can float in the wind. If you blow the round head of seeds gently but firmly, the seeds fly away, forming a kind of art on the move.
So in the dandelion are both art and poetry. ____20____
A. However, deep inside, I felt saddened.
B. They can make food not only tasty but nutritious.
C. Dandelions can be used for many different purposes.
D. He then starts to mix up all his different poisons in his garage.
E. Do you know that the leaves can be used in a salad to make it tastier?
F. But to be honest, I didn’t want dandelions to grow freely in my garden.
G. Let nature’s art and beauty never stop to fill you with joy and amazement.
【答案】16. D 17. A 18. C 19. E 20. G
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章通过邻居除蒲公英与作者对蒲公英的喜爱,展现其艺术、食用价值,呼吁欣赏自然之美。
【16题详解】
由上文“Every year, the spring rains cause weeds to appear everywhere, especially in the lawn.(每年春雨都会导致杂草丛生,尤其是草坪上。)”可知,此处需衔接邻居处理杂草的具体行为。D项He then starts to mix up all his different poisons in his garage.(然后他开始在车库里混合各种不同的除草剂。)中then承接春雨导致杂草生长的前提,“mix up all his different poisons”对应后文“one weed killer...another for...”的分类除草剂,具体描述邻居对杂草的“极端处理”,与“hates to see even one weed”的性格形成呼应。故选D项。
【17题详解】
由上文“Knowing he meant well, I thanked him.(我知道他好意,便谢了他。)”及下文“I happen to like dandelions.(我偏偏喜欢蒲公英。)”可知,此处需转折表达内心真实感受。A项However, deep inside, I felt saddened.(然而,内心深处我感到难过。) 中However表转折,“saddened”与“thanked him”形成表面感谢与内心矛盾的对比,“deep inside”引出后文对蒲公英的喜爱,衔接“外在回应→内在情感”的逻辑。故选A项。
【18题详解】
由下文“They certainly do grow where nothing else does, like along the side of my house. The flowers are a pretty bright yellow. They form their own picture of golden color around my washing line, something like a crazy artwork.(它们确实在其他地方生长,比如我家旁边。这些花是很亮的黄色。他们在我的晾衣绳周围形成了自己的金色图案,就像一件疯狂的艺术品。)”可知,此处需总述蒲公英的特点。C项Dandelions can be used for many different purposes.(蒲公英有许多不同用途。)符合语境。故选C项。
【19题详解】
由上文“The flowers also add fine flavor and color when dropped in ice water.(花朵放入冰水中也能增添风味和色泽。)”及下文“They also add vitamins.(它们还富含维生素。)”可知,此处需具体说明蒲公英在饮食中的应用。E项Do you know that the leaves can be used in a salad to make it tastier?(你知道叶子能用于沙拉使其更美味吗?)中“leaves can be used in a salad”呼应“flowers add flavor”,通过“叶子 — 花朵”的不同部位举例,延续“食用价值”的论述,tastier与flavor形成语义衔接,且设问句式增强互动性。故选E项。
【20题详解】
由上文“So in the dandelion are both art and poetry.(因此蒲公英兼具艺术与诗意。)”可知,此处需升华主题,呼应自然之美。G项Let nature’s art and beauty never stop to fill you with joy and amazement.(让自然的艺术与美丽永远带给你喜悦与惊叹。)中“nature’s art and beauty”指代蒲公英的“art and poetry”,“fill you with joy”呼吁珍视自然之美,与前文“works of art by nature’s hand”形成首尾呼应,将蒲公英的个体特质升华为对自然的欣赏。故选G项。

Dear Librarian,
I am writing to recommend two types of books that I think the library should buy.
The first type is fantasy novels. I think the library needs more fantasy novels because they are very popular with students. Some examples of good fantasy novels for the library would be The Lord of the Rings series and the Harry Potter series. The second type of book I would like to recommend is biographies. Although they are one of the least popular types of books in our library, students should be encouraged to read more of them.
A Enjoy your own life to the fullest. B. Believe in yourself when in trouble.
C. Never be afraid to restart yourself. D. Give freedom to the heart in a way.
