2025 is the year of glacier preservation(冰川保护). And March 21st is set to
be the first World Day for Glaciers. This is to encourage everyone to help protect
glaciers, which are important for life on Earth.
Glaciers have shaped mountains and valleys(山谷) over Earth's history.
They are still moving and changing landscapes(地貌) in many places today. But
glaciers don't just affect the land. When glaciers melt(融化), they provide lakes,
rivers and oceans with nutrients(养分). These nutrients help create the base
(基础) of the food chain in oceans

and rivers. As glaciers melt, they also create homes for plants and animals.
In some areas,they are important water sources(水源) for people and
wildlife. About 10% of the world's land is covered by around 200,000 glaciers,
storing(储存) about 70% of Earth's fresh water. These glaciers feed big rivers
and millions of people.
However, climate change is causing serious problems to glaciers. Many
glaciers have dis-appeared. For example, Colombia has lost 90% of
its glaciers since the mid-19th century. Scientists warn that if temperatures rise
by 1.5 to 4 , most glaciers could lose over 50% of their mass (质量) by the
year 2100. If snow and ice in mountain areas continue to disappear, there will
be less water for drinking and farming. Floods will also be more dangerous
because of growing glacier lakes.#4

In hot summers, we often buy bottled water, drink it all up, and then throw
away the bottles. It's said that more than 1 million water bottles are sold every
minute around the world. Sales of bottled water are expected to double by 2030.
However, using and throwing away so many bottles can cause big problems for
the society and environment.

Social problems
In some rich countries, clean running water is everywhere. But people think
bottled water is healthier and more delicious. That's the view driven by bottled
water companies. In poor countries, people choose bottled water more often
because they don't have ways to drink safe tap water(自来水). So, this can draw
people's attention away from the real problems of public water systems.

Environmental problems
Most plastics are not recycled and end up in landfills(垃圾填埋场). It can
take up to 1,000 years for these bottles to break down in nature. And they can
get into the ocean, harming and even killing sea animals. The main source of
bottled water is groundwater. However, groundwater is rapidly getting less in
some areas because of excessive extraction(过度开采) and climate change. And
the bottled water industry may make the lower water supply even worse.
