Have you ever written a message but paused(停顿) before sending it, or
chosen clothes but kept changing your mind? In a world that values quick
actions, hesitation(犹豫) is often seen as a weakness. But what if it is actually
a wise guide?
Our minds and bodies work together. When we hesitate, it might be a sign
that we need to pay attention to something important. Imagine standing in front
of a door but not wanting to open it. Your body could be telling you about
possible dangers your mind hasn't fully noticed. This hesitation isn't always
fear—it might mean we need more time or information to make a better choice.
8
Hesitation can also come from our intuition(直觉). It helps us know what
is truly right. For example, if you feel nervous about joining a competition
evenwhen you are fully prepared, ask yourself: Is this fear from past failures,
or is your intuition warning you about real danger? To find out, try this simple
test. Pretend you have already chosen to join and notice how your body
reacts(反应)—Does it feel light and calm, or heavy and worried?
Here's how to use hesitation wisely: First, slow down. If a decision feels too
big, sleep on it and think again the next day. Second, talk to friends you trust
or write down your thoughts. Their advice or your own words might show
hidden worries or new ideas. Third, remember that hesitation is not failure.
It is a tool to collect missing parts of the story before taking action.
In the end, hesitation teaches us to listen—not just to our thoughts, but to
our whole self. Next time you pause, ask: What is my body or intuition trying
to say? The answer might help you make wiser choices.#5

Last fall, I signed up for a four-month program for teenagers in Mountain
High School. I went there because hikes, art and fields of corn sounded fun to
me.
When I set out in August, I hugged my parents goodbye. “See you in
December!” I said.
My parents nodded. They were worried—I could tell. It was because they
knew me so well. They knew that I had trouble reaching out. They knew that I
was shy and I made friends slowly.
18
My dad looked worriedly at me and my mom's voice shook as she said,
“You're going to be just fine, baby girl.” The first two weeks were difficult.
I made half-hearted(不热心的) small talk at meals, and I cried in the shower.
For me, being around people all the time was more tiring than running a
five-mile race. I was out of my comfort zone(舒适区), and I couldn't go back.
One day during the third week, I spent two hours collecting corn with
Dorey, one of my classmates. My feelings matched the darkening
sky. I wanted to be alone. After a while, she asked, “Where are you from?”
Half an hour passed. “How many brothers or sisters do you have?” she asked
again.
Finally, my classmate said the three magic words in the English language:
I LOVE READING. Soon I found myself talking about the books I enjoyed
reading. I started to relax. A few bricks(砖) fell down from my wall of shyness.
A few more fell, and I started to reach out. The bricks fell and fell and fell.
By the end of the program, I was totally different. I ran through the dining
hall. I jumped on the chairs. I sang.
It's a wonderful thing to step outside your comfort zone: Once you are out
of it, it doesn't take long to find a new normal. When I arrived, people tired
me. When I left, I couldn't stand leaving them.#8

Being concerned about what other people think about us is very
common. However, we shouldn't spend so much time caring about others’
opinions. In fact, if we spent all day worrying about how our actions make us
appear, we'd never get anything done. So, what should we do? Well, the
answer is about learning to value who we are. We should live our lives for
ourselves. This is easier said than done, but there are a couple of ways to go
about doing this.
74
First, we should remember that our biggest judges are ourselves. British
therapist(心理治疗师) Chloe Brotheridge wrote in Psychology Today that
we should learn to love ourselves. For example, you can make a list of the
things you're good at and practice them every day. You can also spend more
time with people who love you and distance yourself from those who don't.
These things can help you feel better about yourself.
Second, as Brotheridge wrote, “We can't control the way other people
react to us, no matter how hard we try.” By realizing this, you can learn to
focus more on things that make you unique. At the same time, however, we
shouldn't completely forget about how we act around other people. After all,
nobody likes to have someone jump ahead of them in a queue, for example.
So, the best thing to remember is to always be nice to others.#1.2

confident.(开放性设问,言之有理、言之有物即可。)

So, it was time for me to keep my promise. First, I made a
study plan in detail and stuck to it every day. Second, I tried to
work out every problem by asking my teachers or friends for help.
Third, I reviewed all my subjects I had learned every week,
especially the key points. It was hard, but I didn't give up.
By the end of the year, I had made great progress. I became
more confident than before. At the same time, keeping a promise
benefited me a lot.
