On August 16, 2025, Pang Zhongwang, a doctoral
(博士的) student from Tsinghua University, received the
“Touching China 2024” Award. His story, from a poor boy
facing many difficulties to an inspiring role model, has
touched and encouraged many people.#2

Pang was born into a very poor family. His father had a mental illness.
His mother was born with a serious back problem and could hardly move.
Pang himself had heart disease since birth. To help his mother, he once walked
around the village to borrow money for her treatment and even picked up old
things to sell for money. But no matter how hard life got, Pang stayed happy.
In 2017, Pang entered Tsinghua University with top scores. At first, he
worried he might not do well, but he soon found his passion in scientific
research. He never accepted donations but supported himself through

school grants(补助金) and scholarships. His mother, who named him
“Zhongwang”, meaning “hope for the family”, always told him to stay strong.
“My mom smiles every day. Why should I be sad?” he once said.
Unluckily, his mother passed away in 2020, just before he got the chance
to study for a doctorate at Tsinghua University. Today, he has published many
important research papers and invented useful technologies. He hopes to use
science to help his country. It's a dream he works hard for every day.
He even helped a girl change to her favorite school subject, showing how
how his story lights the way for others.
As the award said, “You leave difficulties behind, face life with a
smile, and keep moving forward.” Pang's journey teaches us that with
courage and hope, we can all overcome difficulties and shine brightly.#6

Travel in New Zealand
My family are touring in New Zealand these days. We arrived here
on Wednesday night. On Thursday we crossed the Southern Alps. We
drove through Arthur's Pass and stopped to look at the mountains. The
tops of the mountains looked a bit like black and white pictures, with
their bright white snow and big black rocks. We stayed overnight in
Greymouth.
Yesterday we drove to see the famous Franz Josef Glacier(冰川).
First, we left our things in our hotel and then we set out to walk to the

the wall of the glacier, we were very thirsty. We broke off a tiny bit of glacial
ice and tasted it. We were drinking water that was thousands of years old. It
was much nicer than tasting the ice from the fridge.
Today we drove to the Fox Glacier. Someone had told Dad about a lake on
the way, so we went there first. We had to walk through a dark forest to find
Lake Matheson. It was a very cold lake because all its water came from the
glacier.
It was too late in the day to reach the Fox Glacier. We stayed in
the car park to watch great big green-brown parrots called keas. I used
to consider parrots sweet and lovely, but these birds were not. They were
vicious.
Tomorrow we have to get up early because we are flying to the top
of Franz Josef in a ski-plane. So far we have only seen the front ends
of glaciers and they are like huge walls of blue-green ice with brown
