B 20-year-old Edgar McGregor decided to visit his local park, Eaton Canyon, day in and day out to pick up as much litter as he could fit in two buckets (提桶). Now, over 589 days and 19,000 Twitter followers later, he is more passionate (热爱的) than ever about his task to save the planet! Edgar found out that Los Angeles would be the host of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games. Knowing the state of the national forest at the time, he feared that its grounds that were full of litter would make the city a “global embarrassment,” so he decided to make cleaning it up his new passion project. As time went on, he began documenting his progress on Twitter. Soon, he began encouraging others to start park cleanup projects of their own. As part of southern California’s Angeles National Forest, Eaton Canyon can see quite a bit of daily foot traffic. On one particularly busy day, Edgar spent five hours picking up litter and came away with over 1,000 pounds of rubbish. Rain or shine, Edgar headed over to carry out his task. He worked through conditions like snowstorms, a record heat wave, and even a forest fire on the opposite side of the park. The more he did, the more treasures he discovered. In addition to a lot of old iPhones and cans, Edgar collected enough recyclables to earn around 30 dollars every few weeks, which he would donate to nonprofits. Recently, Edgar began noticing that the top-littered areas in his park were becoming few and far between. At one point, he spent four hours moving around the park and only returned with two buckets. Edgar plans to return to Eaton Canyon two or three times a week to keep up with the maintenance, but he is excited to start expanding his reach to new locations. Though he realizes this doesn’t mean his journey is complete, he is excited to have already achieved so much! 4. Why is the 2028 Summer Olympic Games mentioned? A. To describe what made Edgar famous. B. To explain why Edgar loved Los Angeles. C. To introduce what inspired Edgar to start his project. D. To discuss why Edgar started exploring the national forest. 5. Returning to the parks he has already cleaned. 7 What is the text mainly about? A. A hero for the environment. B. A way of dealing with litter. C. A local development project. D. A huge personal achievement. C Have you ever wanted to share the taste of a delicious dish with a friend far away, only to find that words and pictures fall short of delivering the full experience? A new device called “e-Taste” can help. Developed by scientists at Ohio State University in the US, this device aims to improve digital experiences by adding “flavors” to them, reported Science Daily. Creating digital tastes is challenging. Taste is about “feeling” actual molecules (分子) that come out when teeth and saliva (唾液) break down food or drink, according to the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). The molecules “wake up” certain cells on the tongue and along the roof and back of the mouth. With different sensitivity, these cells respond to at least one of the five basic tastes — sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami (鲜味) by sending signals to the thalamus (丘脑). It then transmits the signals to other brain regions where specific tastes are identified. Since the full flavor is experienced only when these signals are put together, creating taste requires collecting all this information. The “e-Taste” device does this using a special sensor. Like an “electronic tongue”, the sensor measures the levels of five chemicals in food or drink that contribute to the five basic tastes. Once gathered, the data is sent wirelessly to another part of the device. This part pushes up liquids through a gel layer that contains the five chemicals. By drinking the liquids, people can taste the food or drink no matter where they are. Real-world tests of “e-Taste” went well. It worked even when the device’s two parts were placed in different cities thousands of kilometers apart. Volunteers identified foods like fish soup with almost 87 percent success, according to a statement by The Ohio State University. Looking ahead, scientists plan to “conquer” more taste sensations, like spiciness. They also want to study the device’s effect on different people, given that taste is “greatly related to human emotion and memory”, said scientist Li Jinghua in the university’s statement. 8. What is the main purpose of the “e-Taste” device? A. To create new flavors in dishes. B. To identify different tastes of dishes. C. To describe tastes beyond words. D. To realize remote sharing of flavors. 9. What is the main focus of paragraph 2? A. How the human body experiences tastes. B. The challenges of developing digital tastes. C. The role of different parts of the mouth in tasting. D. How the five basic tastes interact with each other. 10. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Gathering necessary data. B. Sending electrical signals. C. Experiencing the full flavor. D. Measuring the levels of tastes. 11. What can be inferred about the future plans of the scientists? A Lowering its cost is their primary goal. B. Spiciness is their top research priority. C. They aim to stimulate a wider range of tastes. D. They will study the emotional impact of the device. D When Alexander Fleming returned to his lab in 1928, he found a bacteria culture he had grown was infected by fungus (霉菌). The fungus killed any bacteria colonies it touched. Rather than simply starting over, Fleming switched his focus to the fungus. He identified the bacteria-killing substance, which he called “penicillin”, and created the new field of antibiotics (抗生素). That’s how most people see innovation: a flash of brilliance and a “eureka moment” when a new world is born in an instant. The truth, however, is not that simple. It wasn’t until 1943 that penicillin came into widespread use. To put Fleming’s discovery in context, consider Ignaz Semmelweis, who pioneered hand washing in maternity wards (产房), significantly reducing childbed fever but receiving criticism instead of fame. That was because in the 1850s, his ideas conflicted with the popular theory, which suggested that disease resulted from “bad air”. After his death in 1865, germ (病菌) theory was finally accepted, paving the way for Fleming’s later work. Fleming was a gifted biologist but a poor communicator. When he published his results in 1929, few took notice. In 1935, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain discovered Fleming’s paper, understood its importance, and developed methods to produce penicillin in quantity. By 1943, with World War II going on fiercely, the War Production Board asked 21 companies to mass-produce penicillin, saving countless lives and ushering in the new age of antibiotics. Fleming, Florey and Chain received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945. Penicillin owes much of its success to government support. For many other groundbreaking innovations like the Internet and GPS, their innovators, while carving their own path, are often uncertain of where the opportunity lies until they team up with other informed officials and big firms that might have the resources to turn their ideas into reality quickly. So, look at any significant innovation and the myth of the lone genius, and the “eureka moment” breaks down. 12. What are the first two paragraphs mainly about? A. Definition of a traditional concept. B. A description of a lab story. C. Correction of a common misunderstanding. D An analysis of a scientific phenomenon. 13. What is the message conveyed in paragraph 3? A. Great minds think alike. B. The early bird catches the worm. C. A stroke of luck paves the way for success. D. Early work contributes to later breakthroughs. 14. What does the underlined part “ushering in” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Predicting. B. Starting. C. Delaying. D. Transforming. 15. Which of the following can be the best title? A. Great Innovation: Individuals Are True Heroes B. From Failure to Success: The Story of Penicillin C. The lone Genius: Fleming’s Discovery of Penicillin D. The Long Road to Penicillin: How Innovation Happens 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Are you an “I person” or an “E person”? These two personality labels in particular are widely discussed online. They are part of a popular personality test called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI. ____16____ “I” and “E” refer to “introverted” and “extroverted”, respectively. ___17___ This is a common point in many online discussions. For example, when an introverted person is with a group of introverted friends, they might become more social like an “E” person. According to psychologists, this idea of temporarily switching personalities is called “masking”. ____18____ “Human beings want to feel they belong, and they might become people-pleasers to do so,” wrote the MasterClass website. Using the MBTI result to identify and describe someone’s personality seems fun. ____19____ My sister was excitedly making a day-to-day travel plan when I remembered from an article that “P people” don’t like to make or stick to plans, so I said to her, “You don’t seem like a ‘P person’.” “Why?” she asked back. “Since when do I need to follow what my personality test tells me to do?” It was then I realized I’d taken the result too seriously. The MBTI personality test may show something you don’t know about yourself and can even be a fun ice-breaker question when meeting new friends. ____20____ Knowing someone’s MBTI result doesn’t mean you really know this person. And those four letters of yours don’t define who you are. A And that’s all it is — for fun. B. However, I went too far at one time. C. Unfortunately, I was once misled by it myself. D. That is hiding your true personality in specific situations. E. Even someone who is typically quiet can act outgoing at times. F. There are 16 results in total, all of which consist of four letters. G. Therefore, it is essential to remember that these labels are not absolute. 第二部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) During the holiday season in 2015, Felicia Hall was battling depression. “I was unhappy, overeating fast food at night and not really caring for myself. But when it came to performing in front of other people, I always became nervous and got discouraged frequently with my inability to play as well as I could when practicing alone. The fear of making mistakes made my hand tremble, overshadowing the joy I found in music. I worried that a single wrong note would break the connection I hoped to create with my listeners. Determined to overcome this fear, I joined my high school orchestra (管弦乐队) as a freshmen. At our first class, the conductor announced that we would have the opportunity to perform in San Antonio, and everyone was excited about the trip. A few weeks before the actual trip, one of my friends sent me a video of Joshua Bell, a well-known violinist, performing at a subway station. I was particularly fascinated by one piece that he played for the passersby. And he earned $32.17 for that piece. I was deeply moved by the emotional richness and complexity of the piece, and I felt a strong desire to express its beauty. I imagined myself performing it confidently, just like Bell. I started practicing it like crazy. However, the difficulty of the piece and the constant repetitions and adjustments wore me out to the point where I almost considered just giving up. But it was a worthy challenge and I thought I could master it, with my unique style. Several weeks later, our orchestra group were staying at a hotel in San Antonio. As we were hanging out, we found a beautiful courtyard just in front of the hotel. The friend who sent me the video and I were talking about how Joshua Bell’s performance at the subway station went viral on the social media. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Suddenly, he suggested that I play for the hotel customers in the courtyard. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I tried not to mind the mistakes halfway through the performance as before. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 广州市第一中学2025学年上学期高二年级期中考试 英语 2025年11月 本试卷共10页,满分为130分,考试时间120分钟。 Suddenly, he suggested that I play for the hotel customers in the courtyard. At first, I was hesitant. The fear of making mistakes and embarrassing myself in front of others welled up inside me. But then I thought of Joshua Bell’s performance in the subway station. He played with such passion and dedication regardless of the setting. I took a deep breath, nodded, and got my violin ready. I walked to the center of the courtyard, and as I started to play, all eyes turned towards me. I tried not to mind the mistakes halfway through the performance as before. Instead I focused on the music itself, on expressing the beauty and emotion that I had felt when I first listened to the piece. I remembered the countless hours of practice, the determination to master this challenge. Gradually, I lost myself in the music. When I finished, there was a moment of silence, and then warm applause filled the courtyard. I looked around, seeing smiles on the faces of the hotel customers. A sense of accomplishment washed over me. I had finally overcome my fear and connected with the audience through the music. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
