For many pop idol fans, having the opportunity to participate in a music video for their favorite pop songs might be a dream come true.
I, I had taken lessons at a Chinese-owned dance studio, and they began to hold auditions (试镜) for a special project—filming a music video! Those who passed the auditions would rehearse (排练) a well-designed dance and be filmed by a professional camera crew. I really like the song they chose—Kill This Love by Blackpink, a girl group from South Korea, so I auditioned.
I was confident at first in the audition, but as I felt more pressure, I forgot a few moves. This definitely hurt my chances, so I became very on edge about the results. Additionally, because Blackpink is a four-member group, the studio was only looking for four people, and over 20 people had auditioned. I was very unsure if my performance would be good enough for a callback.
Two weeks later when I had just about given up on hearing back, I got a text from the studio manager, saying, “Congratulations! You have passed the audition for Kill This Love.” I could barely contain my excitement, but wanting to seem mature, I replied to her in a calm and collected manner.
We were scheduled for five rehearsals in total, and the filming date was set for the middle of April. What really stirred up my excitement was knowing that we would be filmed in public. I would also be dancing the part of Rose, my favorite Blackpink member.
Our first rehearsal was on a Wednesday. The studio had rented the basement of a theater. There were, of course, difficulties. The dance routine included formations, so we had to learn the positions and transitions—things that we did not usually learn in our regular dance lessons. But it was just the four of us, and our teacher had enough time to work with each of us individually.
I have been practicing hard for my dream. I hope everything goes well, and I look forward to the upcoming performance!
4. How did I feel about the results after forgetting a few moves?
A. Confident. B. Ambitious. C. Confused. D. Nervous.
5. Why did I reply to the manager calmly when I got the exciting text?
A. Because I intended to present a mature image to her.
B. Because I was trained well enough to contain my feelings.
C. Because I knew that I was good enough for such a callback.
D. Because I had known the result before she informed me of it.
6. What was my first rehearsal in the basement like?
A. Confusing but practical. B. Challenging but helpful.
C. Difficult but entertaining. D. Regular but rewarding.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To express the burning passion for Blackpink.
B. To show the difficulty in attending an audition.
C. To share a personal experience in pursuit of a dream.
D. To convey the excitement of engaging in a rehearsal.
C
Do you ever talk to yourself? Although it’s not always a conscious habit, most of us practice self-talk on a daily basis, as a way of guiding, motivating or supporting ourselves.
Over the years, research has shown that self-talk can increase productivity, motivation and confidence, and even help manage feelings. “There is solid evidence that self-talk strategies improve learning and performance,” according to sport psychologist Antonis Hatzigeorgiadis, who studies the phenomenon of self-talk.
He explains that there are generally three reasons why we practice self-talk: to instruct to motivate or to evaluate. Instructional self-talk happens when we need to guide ourselves through a specific task, such as learning a new skill. Motivational self-talk usually is used when we want to prepare ourselves for something challenging; it can help to increase confidence. Evaluative self - talk mostly is related to past events or actions.
Hatzigeorgiadis stresses that if we want to use such self-talk to good advantage, it needs to be short, precise and, most of all, consistent. Of course, self-talk also can be ineffective and even detrimental if it’s not done right.
“It is a matter of personal preference or what works for each person; but generally, it is advised that self - talk be positively rather than negatively phrased and focus on what you should do rather than on what you should avoid,” Hatzigeorgiadis says. So, for example, it would be better to say “stay cool” instead of “don’t get upset”. Although both instructions convey the same meaning, you should use positive words rather than negative ones. In this way you can avoid ill results.
Another thing that can make a difference when practicing self-talk is the way you address yourself. According to research published in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, using “you” rather than “I” when talking to yourself tends to be more effective. The researchers explain that when you think of yourself as another person, it allows you to give more objective and useful feedback.
8. What does the research say about self-talk?
A. It is always an unconscious behavior. B. It is a daily habit for everyone.
C. It may help strengthen memory. D. It can make people feel better.
9. What can be concluded from Hatzigeorgiadis’ explanation?
A. Self-talk occurs in different situations.
B. Self-talk usually makes one brave.
C. Self-talk arises with various feelings.
D. Self-talk only works when learning a new skill.
10. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Confusing. B. Useless. C. Harmful. D. Unbearable.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Self-talk: a close relation to the past.
B. Self-talk: a great way to avoid ill results.
C. Self-talk: a useful tool to benefit our life.
D. Self-talk: a matter of personal preference.
D
In recent years, much of my life, as a consumer has shifted to what I like to call background spending. As I’ve subscribed to more apps and streaming platforms, significant sums of my money tend to slip away each month without my ever thinking about it.
Think of it as automated trade Spending without the trouble of spending. Acquisition without action or thought.
But while this flood of subscriptions was sold to me on the condition that it would make my life more trouble free, there was a certain shock I felt upon discovering how much I was spending without realizing each month ($179.45).
You see, the thing about background spending is that it tends to happen, well, in the background without your full attention. And there lies the point.
“Hand over your credit card details and let us take care of the rest,” these companies promise us. But by agreeing to this trade, we’ve become lazy passive consumers. And this laziness breeds more laziness because most of us can’t be bothered with conducting regular reviews of our subscription spending. We’re too lazy to even notice or cancel!
I know it’s not just me who is suddenly living life as a smooth-brained subscriber. The average consumer spends $273 per month on subscriptions, according to a 2021 study of 2,500 by digital services firm West Monroe. Not a single person surveyed knew what his actual monthly spending was.
It’s understandable why this model is so attractive to businesses. As companies questioned traditional advertising models, subscriptions offered the promise of “selling once and earning forever.” And while subscription services have been around for decades (think Wine of the Month Club), more customers have been willing to sign up thanks to the widespread availability of smartphones and the increasing ease of home delivery.
While these subscriptions promise ease and happiness, not all of us are satisfied. Last year, the Kearney Consumer Institute found 40 percent of consumers believe they have too many subscriptions. Almost half of us also think we pay too much for streaming video-on-demand subscriptions.
12. What can we know about background spending in paragraph 2?
A. Its purpose. B. Its feature. C. Its procedure. D. Its requirement.
13. What makes it possible for background spending to happen?
A. Its attractive price. B. Some people’s poor habit.
C. Its secure service. D. Some people’s addiction to it.
14. Why is the subscription model appealing to businesses?
A. It offers good home delivery services.
B. It is like traditional advertising models.
C. It is popular among smartphone producers.
D. It brings repeated profits through a single sale.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards background spending?
A. Supportive. B. Optimistic. C. Critical. D. Unclear.

I have a drawer full of letters to Santa. Each year my children would write up their Christmas wish lists. They were polite requests for the latest game or toy. As the children got older, they would give Santa some hints(提示)on where to buy their presents. ____16____
Those letters taught my children a valuable lesson about writing: It has a purpose. Sometimes our purpose is to achieve something;other times it may be to entertain, inform, or persuade. ____17____ And when writing doesn’t seem to have any purpose or get any kind of meaningful response, then it can be hard to get excited about doing it.
Christmas is a great time of year for children to communicate with others through writing. When children write for real audiences and real purposes, they can learn to choose their words accordingly. ____18____ You write “Dear Santa” because you don’t know him personally and you want to show him respect.
____19____ Texting, online messaging, live chats while playing video games all mean that they are constantly producing written messages. However, because they are usually writing to family and friends, they use informal language most of the time.
There is nothing wrong with this kind of writing. It suits the audience and the purpose and gets the job done. ____20____ This type of writing won’t be rewarded by the school examiner, nor by a future employer or a potential client. The very best communicators are those who know how to adjust their language to match their audience.

Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Whenever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.
Her classmate, Landy, however, was not in the cool kids’ group. Being the tallest kid in her class, she was laughed at by her classmates, who were always chanting (唱起……歌) “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti (意大利面).”
Catherine didn’t really like it when the kids chanted “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti”. But she never told them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Catherine went over to visit her grandfather. Her grandfather lives on a farm, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a special one. Hidden in the corner, it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
“What’s the matter with it?” She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act. “They have a pecking (啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead. “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
“Oh, what a poor little thing!” Catherine let out a sigh as she picked the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body. Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates. “I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,” she said with a determined look.
Back in school, Catherine told the cool kids about the chicken. “It’s looking healthy,” she said proudly. “It’s fatter and its feathers are growing. Even the cat likes it. She carries it around, and...” Everyone was entertained by Catherine’s story of her lovely chicken, laughter spreading around the classroom.

Landy was just like the poor little chicken, being teased and ignored by her classmates, merely due to her special height. “It’s high time to do something for a change.” Catherine thought to herself. Having made up her mind, she urged the rest cool kids to make peace with Landy. Astonished at what she said, all the kids burst out screaming, “Talking to the long spaghetti? Are you crazy?”
But Catherine walked directly toward Landy, no matter what they said. “Landy, sorry about the spaghetti thing. I should have realized it earlier. Can you forgive us?” Catherine murmured an apology, her face reddening. She figured Landy might just walk away. But she lifted her misty eyes and nodded yes. Catherine wiped away her tears, giving her a warm hug. Moved by the scene, the other kids also came to offer their sincere apologies to Landy. From that day on, no one made up silly chants about Landy, and Catherine also learned that everyone should be treated equally no matter how special he or she was.
