For many, Chinese characters seem like complex symbols. However, Lena, a 20-year-old American college student, views them in a unique way. To her, each character has its own story. She pictures“ren”(person) as a cat’s face, and “ceng” (once) as an angry robot.
Lena gained popularity when she spent only 30 minutes drawing “ceng” and posted it on rednote (or Xiaohongshu). Amazingly, this simple drawing got 40,000 likes overnight. Now, her creative artworks raise discussions about language, art, and cultural exchange.
Growing up in a diverse community with many Asians, Lena was surrounded by different languages and cultures. “As a child, I had Chinese friends. I was fascinated by seeing their names on lunch boxes. This language was so new to me, completely different from Western languages,” Lena remembered. This early curiosity remained with her and reappeared in college during a US-China relations course, which deepened her interest in modern Chinese culture.
Deep in rednote, Lena noticed more characters that looked like various objects. She describes herself as imaginative and highly perceptive, often spotting details others miss.
Besides drawing, Lena translates all her posts into Chinese to show respect to her followers. Her efforts have helped her make Chinese friends online, chatting about daily life and food. Some followers said Lena understands the beauty of Chinese characters better than many Chinese. “It’s because you’re used to them,” Lena replied, adding the opposite is also true. For example, she learned from Chinese friends that “orz” looks like a person bowing in apology, but it means nothing in English. “It’s something I never thought of. That’s the result of a non-native looking at unfamiliar characters,” she said.
As Lena plans to share more character-inspired art on rednote, her story shows a truth: language is more than words; it’s about connection and understanding the world from others’ perspectives.
4. How did Lena become popular on rednote?
A. By posting creative drawings of Chinese characters.
B. By translating English articles into Chinese.
C. By sharing her daily life in China.
D. By having online chats with Chinese netizens.
5. What deepened Lena’s interest in modern Chinese culture?
A. Her Chinese friends. B. Using rednote.
C. A US-China relations course. D. Drawing Chinese characters.
6. Why did Lena mention the example“orz”?
A. To show non-natives’ unique views. B. To prove followers’ over-praise.
C. To explain learning difficulty. D. To analyze grammar differences.
7. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Lena gains popularity on campus.
B. Creative characters bridge language and culture.
C. Diverse background increases Lena’s interest.
D. Chinese characters: more than simple symbols.

When Appa passed away peacefully one morning, part of my priceless inheritance (遗产) from him is a box of yellow pencils. Some barely used, some worn-down, but each unfailingly functional, they remind me of his love of solving crossword puzzles.
In his 80s, Appa would read the day’s newspaper, cover to cover. A few minutes of reading with the sun streaming in through the bay windows. A spark in his mind, and bingo! He’d get that puzzling word to complete the puzzle.
While my father used words for love, I did the same for a living. In my own mind, it did not matter how much I got paid for writing. I wrote because I loved it, often for or about non-profits — that is until recently.
“You were paid peanuts!” said some of my younger, more worldly-wise friends. Unlike me, they found the best places to publish their work and the best editors to work with. But their words didn’t affect me.
However, when an editor surprised me with a lower rate of pay for a piece they chose to publish online rather than in print, as was originally proposed, I was shocked... and hurt! But like my father, I saw the bright side — so many people read the piece and loved it, sharing joyful emotions and praise on social media. It did wonders for my confidence.
Today, when doubts cloud my mind, I think of Appa’s sharpened pencil. Its purpose may have been to solve a crossword. A crossword is complete — and gives one joy — with only so many words, and only when each word rests on elements from the others. Couldn’t my words hold a duality (双重性) that completes my purpose too? And so, now I take up assignments, some that pay well, some that don’t, but together, and most importantly, they fill me with joy. After all, it is only our heartfelt passion that matters.
8. Why did the author mention his father in the article?
A. To express the author’s love for his father.
B. To emphasize his father’s influence on him.
C. To introduce his father’s passion for the puzzles.
D. To indicate his father’s supporting his career as a writer.
9. What does the underlined sentence “You were paid peanuts” mean in paragraph 4?
A. You were paid in cash.
B. You were paid lots of money.
C. You were paid very little money.
D. You were paid with valuable items.
10. What made the author feel hurt?
A. The editor refused to publish his article.
B. His article was published in print as proposed.
C. His article was published online with a lower pay.
D. The editor reduced the payment due to budget cuts.
11. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Like father, like son.
B. Follow your own path, and let others talk.
C. What is done with passion is done well.
D. Love what you do and do what you love.
D
The practice of paying children an allowance (零花钱) became popular in America about 100 years ago. Nowadays, American kids on average receive about $800 per year in allowance. But most American parents who pay allowance tie it to the completion of housework. Although many parents believe that paying an allowance for completing chores (家务活) benefits their children, some experts expressed concern that tying allowance very closely to chores may not be perfect. In fact, the way chores work in many households worldwide points to another way.
Suniya Luthar, a psychologist, is against paying kids for chores. Luthar is not against giving allowances, but she thinks it’s important to establish that chores are done not because they will lead to payment, but because they keep the household running. Luthar’s suggested approach to allowance agrees with that of write-Ron Lieber, who advises that allowances be used as a way of showing children how to save, give and spend on things they care about. Kids should do chores, he writes, “for the same reason adults do, because the chores need to be done, and not with the expectation of reward.”
This argument has its critics, but considering the way chores are undertaken around the world may change people’s thinking. Professor David Lancy of Utah State University has studied how families around the world handle chores. At about 18 months of age, Lancy says, most children become eager to help their parents, and in many cultures, they begin helping with housework at that age. They begin with very simple tasks, but their responsibilities gradually increase. And they do these tasks without payment. Lancy compares this with what happens in America. “We refuse our children’s offers to help until they are 6 or 7 years old,” Lancy says, “when many have lost the desire to help and then try to motivate them with payment. The solution to this problem is not to try to use money as a motive for doing housework, but to get children involved in housework much earlier, when they actually want to do it.”
12 What do some experts think about paying children for doing chores?
A. It may benefit children in the long term.
B It may not help complete homework.
C. It may not be the best thing to do.
D. It may help children engage more in labor.
13. According to Ron Lieber, what should parents give children allowances to do?
A. To reward their help.
B. To strengthen family ties.
C. To teach them ways to manage money.
D. To motivate them to do more housework.
14. What does David Lancy say about 18-month-olds?
A. They should learn to take family responsibilities.
B. They have a natural tendency to help around the house.
C. They are too young to request money for what they do.
D. They need a little support to get involved in housework.
15. What does David Laney advise American parents to do?
A. Set a good example for children.
B. Teach children how to do housework.
C. Accept children’s early willingness to help.
D. Reward children for doing housework.

Researchers found that they could accurately (准确地) predict how close two people were based only on their brain activity in response to a series of unfamiliar video clips. Put simply: You and your best friends really do think alike. According to a Dartmouth study finding, friends have similar neural (神经的) responses to real-world stimuli (刺激) and these similarities can be used to predict who your friends are. The study reveals that friends have the most similar neural activity patterns, followed by friends-of-friends who, in turn, have more similar neural activity than people three degrees removed (friends-of-friends-of-friends).
Published in Nature Communications, the study is the first of its kind to examine the connections between the neural reaction of people within a real-world social network. “Neural responses to active, naturalistic stimuli, like videos, can give us a window into people’s unlimited, unplanned thought processes as they unfold. Our results suggest that friends process the world around them in exceptionally similar ways,” says lead author Carolyn Parkinson.
The study analyzed the friendships or social ties within a group of 280 graduate students. The researchers estimated the social distance between pairs of individuals based on mutually (相互地) reported social ties. Forty-two of the students were asked to watch a range of videos while their neural activity was recorded in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner. The videos covered a range of topics and genres, including politics, science, comedy and music videos, for which a range of responses was expected. Each participant watched the same videos in the same order, with the same instructions. The researchers then compared the neural responses in pairs across the set of students to determine if pairs of students who were friends had more similar brain activity than pairs further removed from each other in their social network.
The findings revealed that neural response similarity was strongest among friends, and this pattern appeared across brain regions involved in emotional responding and high-level reasoning. Even when the researchers controlled variables (变量), including left-handedness or right-handedness, age, gender, race, and nationality, the analogy (类比) in neural activity among friends was still evident. The team also found that fMRI response similarities could be used to predict not only if a pair were friends but also the social distance between the two.
16. What can we learn about the study mentioned in the text?
A. It involved more than 200 students watching various videos.
B. It required a professional device to analyze participants’ conversation.
C. It has not gained acceptance from the academic world yet.
D. It is original and checks people’s neural responses.
17. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The process of the study. B. The design of the study.
C. The findings of the study. D. The breakthrough of the study.
18. What is the author’s attitude towards the findings of the study?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Objective. D. Indifferent.
19. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Neural Responses Shape Social Bonds.
B. How Vidos Connect People’s Minds.
C. The Science Behind Social Networks.
D. Friendship Seen Through Neural Patterns.

【60题答案】
【答案】Dear Mrs. Smith,
I’m Li Hua, a Senior One student. I’m writing to ask for your help because I’m having trouble getting along with my classmates recently.
Since entering the school, I’ve tried to talk with them and join their activities, but I always feel left out. When they chat happily, I can’t find topics to join in. This makes me very lonely and even affects my mood in class.
I know you’re kind and experienced in dealing with such problems. Could you give me some advice on how to communicate better with classmates?
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
