But what if they don’t want to talk? That happens sometimes. In that case, you can try to make them feel better with something enjoyable or distracting (分散注意力的), like playing a game together or watching a funny movie. It has to be something that helps them take their minds off the problems for a while. Yeah, I could do that! Thanks, AI! You’re welcome! Good luck, and I hope everything gets better soon! 46. Thick gloves might be a good choice, but sometimes wearing them is inconvenient. However, this was not a problem for ancient Chinese people, who had a fine tool to warm their hands: hand warmers. There is one folk story about its invention. Emperor Yang from the Sui Dynasty visited Jiangsu in winter. Because of the cold, a local official asked craftsmen (工匠人) to make a small warmer for the emperor that could be held in his hands. So, the hand warmer was created. By the Song Dynasty, the warmers had become popular among the common (普通的) people. Skills for producing the tool were widely used in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Many poets from this period kept a record of people using hand warmers. In the early days, copper (铜) was generally used in the production process. It was more suitable than silver, iron and porcelain because it could transfer (传导) heat better, while reducing the risk of breakage or corrosion (腐蚀). Inside a hand warmer, there were coals, some of which were mixed with flowers, giving off a nice smell when burned. Ancient hand warmers had different designs. Round, square and octagonal (八边形的) shapes were typical, and there were also some fashioned shapes which looked like pumpkins, flowers and turtle shells. The patterns on the warmers would usually be animals or symbols with good meanings, such as deer, flowers or the Chinese characters for long life. This combination of art and practicality made the hand warmer not just a tool, but a cultural symbol of elegance and wisdom, reflecting the ancient people’s pursuit of beauty in daily life. 49. According to the passage, when did hand warmers become popular among common people? A. During the Sui Dynasty. B. During the Song Dynasty. C. During the Ming Dynasty. D. During the Qing Dynasty. 50. What does the underlined word “typical” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. strange B. expensive C. difficult D. common 51. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage? A. Hand warmers were only used by emperors and officials. B. The invention of hand warmers was unexpected. C. The designs of hand warmers reflected people’s wishes for good things. D. Silver was the best material for making hand warmers. 52. What is the best title for this passage? A. The History of Winter in China B. Ancient Chinese Hand Warmers: History and Culture C. Although they were from different social classes, they were like brothers and spent a lot of time together. Every morning, before Amir woke up, Hassan would get everything ready for him. He made Amir’s breakfast, prepared his school things, and even cleaned his clothes. After school, they would go to a nearby hill. There, they would sit under a big tree, and Amir would read stories to Hassan. Even though Hassan couldn’t read, he loved listening to Amir read. He would ask Amir many questions about the stories, showing how much he was interested. One of their favorite things to do in the winter was to take part in the kite-flying competitions in Kabul. Amir was really good at flying kites. He could make his kite fly high in the sky and cut the strings (线) of other kites easily. Hassan, on the other hand, was the best kite runner in the neighborhood. Once a kite was cut down, Hassan could always find it quickly, no matter where it landed. During one important kite-flying competition, Amir managed to cut the last remaining kite string, and his kite became the winner. Everyone cheered for him. Hassan, as always, ran to catch the fallen kite for Amir. He shouted, “For you, a thousand times over!” with a big smile on his face. Amir was so proud of winning the competition and couldn’t wait for Hassan to come back with the kite. ________. Some bad kids in the neighborhood stopped Hassan. They knew Hassan was just a servant and thought they could bully (欺负) him. They asked Hassan to give them the kite, but Hassan refused. He decided to bring the kite back to Amir whatever happened. Can you help me with something? Of course, I’m here to help! What’s bothering (给……造成麻烦) you? Well, I don’t know how to say it, but my older sister has been arguing a lot with our parents lately. They always seem angry at each other. It’s making me feel caught in the middle. What can I do to help them? It sounds like your sister is going through some difficult times with your parents. One thing you can do is to be a good listener. Sometimes, all they need is someone to talk to and understand them. You can say things like, “Hey, sister, if you ever want to talk about what’s happening, I’m here for you.” Or “Hey, Dad or Mom, if you feel like delivering (传递) a message to my sister, I’m your guy.” That’s a good idea! 46. What is John’s main problem? A. He argues with his sister often. B. He doesn’t know how to talk to an AI robot. C. His parents are angry with him. D. The AI suggests two different ways to help John’s family. D. John feels happy about the situation between his sister and parents. B As winter comes, hands can easily get cold. 49. According to the passage when did hand warmers become popular among common people? A. During the Sui Dynasty. B. During the Song Dynasty. C. During the Ming Dynasty. D. During the Qing Dynasty. 50. A Folk Story of Emperor Yang D. Different Materials for Making Hand Warmers C Yang Zhenning, one of the greatest physicists of the 20th century, passed away (逝世) on October 18,2025, in Beijing at the age of 103. Amir had a servant (仆人) named Hassan, who was the same age as him. When we face difficulties, a spirit of depending on yourself is more useful than crying for help. That’s what Hong Zhanhui’s story of growing from boy to man with family suffering tells us. Hong was born in 1982 in a poor family in Xihua County, Henan Province. When he was only 11, his father became badly ill and one day he came back with an abandoned (被遗弃的) baby girl. A year later Hong’ s mother left home. She no longer wanted to live such a poor life and face her sick husband. So everything hard fell onto the young boy’s shoulders: to take care of his father and the sister Chenchen, and to go on to study. Although his life was hard, Hong didn’t go away from his father and sister. He worked in part-time jobs to feed his family. He climbed tall trees to get bird’s eggs for his sister. He walked two hours at weekends to the market to buy different things to sell around his school. A few years later, he studied at a college. To take care of Chenchen, he worked hard to hire (租) a room near his college for her and sent her to school. After Hong’s story went public, he became a hero in people’s eyes. But Hong refused offers from others. He said he felt encouraged by kind offers, but he could depend on his own work. Hong’s story shows that with love and willpower, no hardship (艰苦) can knock a person down but himself. So when facing difficulties, don’t complain about bad luck. Consider what more you could do for your family and society and you’ll find the world smiling back. 84. When did Hong Zhanhui’s mother leave the family? _____________________________________________________________ 85. Why did Hong Zhanhui hire a room near his college? _____________________________________________________________ 86.
