This year, I did something I’d never done — shopping at midnight on Black Friday after Thanksgiving. After all, you can get great deals online from the comfort of your bed over a hot cup of coffee. So why would I stand in traffic, cold weather, and crowds for a few bargains (特价商品)?
For my teenagers, spending time with Mum is usually down on their list next to homework and picking up the dog waste. So, when they asked me to take them shopping at the mall at midnight on Black Friday, my first reaction (反应) was surely no! But my son, who usually runs the other way if I mention shopping, wanted me to take him shopping. I felt needed, though I knew it was my wallet and a ride, not quality (高质量的) time with Mum that they wanted.
Then the hour-long car ride. We followed songs on the radio and talked about the deals we hoped to get. I had chances to give them lessons on what not to do when driving, but I had to keep the peace. And we all connected as we sat with crazed smiles at midnight.
The kids were excited once we finally reached the busy parking lot. There was something about standing in a line that snaked around the building in the freezing cold that brought people together. Once inside, we had to work as a team, hoping to come together with just the right size and colour. As I dug through mountains of clothing for a special shirt for my husband and gave up, my daughter came towards me, shirt in hand and victory on her face. “I got the last one!”
So we ended up at 3 a.m. with some bargains. Nothing we couldn’t have found online or in stores at a reasonable hour. But for me, I got quality time with my kids. Driving home tired, looking in the mirror at my children’s sweet faces, I decided, “If they ask me to again next year, I’m in.”
4. What did the kids need to do according to the author?
A. Buy things online with comfort. B. Take a cup of coffee comfortably.
C. Shop with their mother’s money. D. Spend quality time with the family.
5. How did the author communicate with her kids during the drive to the mall?
A. She shared their excitement. B. She taught them some songs.
C. She taught them shopping tips. D. She gave them lessons on driving.
6. Why did the daughter show victory on her face?
A. She had worked as a team member. B. She had searched out her clothes.
C. She had been in line to see a snake. D. She had found a shirt for her father.
7. How did the author find her shopping experience?
A. Tiring. B. Enjoyable. C. Heart-broken. D. Money-wasting.
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. D 7. B

Have you ever wondered what the food you eat every day can tell you about where you come from? Have you ever wondered why people from different parts of the world eat different types of food? Do you ever ask yourself why certain foods or cooking traditions are so important to your culture? There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think.
On a personal level, we grow up eating the food of our cultures. It becomes a part of who each of us is. Many of us connect food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding special and personal value for us.
On a larger level, food is an important part of culture. Traditional food is passed down from one generation to the next. It also operates as an expression of cultural identity (文化认同). Immigrants (移民) bring the food of their countries with them wherever they go and cooking traditional food is a way of keeping their culture when they move to new places.
In addition, each country or community’s unique cuisine can reflect its history, values and so on. In China, harmony is an important quality in almost every part of life. This is mirrored in Chinese food, where almost every flavour is used in a balanced way creating delicious dishes with flavours that go well together. The food of the United States also mirrors its history. The European colonization (殖民) of the Americas brought European ingredients and cooking styles to the US.
As the world becomes more globalized (全球化), it is easier to get food from different cultures. We should not only hug our tradition through our culture’s food but we should also know more about other cultures by trying their foods. It’s important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it.

B. European settlers liked cooking food in American styles.
C. Food mirrors all the changes in a country’s history.
D. Chinese people usually do things in a balanced way.

As wildfires spread across Los Angeles, the J. Paul Getty Museum showed its strong disaster readiness. With fire within six feet of the Getty Villa on January 7, the museum’s strong protective actions became a great example of resilience.
The Getty Museum’s workers, working 24-hour by turns, checked the hilltops around both the Getty Villa and the Getty Center. The older Getty Villa, home to thousands of old and valuable objects, is located in the Pacific Palisades, while the Getty Center in Brentwood houses famous artworks like Vincent van Gogh’s Irises. Provided with fire extinguishers (灭火器), the workers checked the grounds for fire, carefully protecting the museum’s valuable collections.
The museum’s survival against the fires was unusual among the extremely harmful damage that killed dozens and destroyed thousands of homes. With $9.1 billion and years of experience in fighting wildfires, the Getty Museum had used millions in fire protection actions, like fire resistant (防火) architecture.
When the fire put the Getty Villa at risk, President Katherine Fleming watched anxiously from the Getty Center’s control station, tracking the fire’s progress. The Getty Villa, built with fire-resistant concrete (混凝土) walls and roofs, remained unharmed though the fire was very close. The same was true for its priceless collection of 40,000 valuable objects.
Meanwhile, the Getty Center’s architecture, designed by Richard Meier with fire-resistance in mind, has 1.2 million square feet of stone and huge open spaces to stop fire from spreading. The museum’s advanced watering system was started quickly, wetting the grounds and further protecting the treasures.
In the case of the Getty Museum, planning ahead protected its treasures. But in the future, as more disasters driven by the climate emergency must happen, the attention of normal people is important. We call for everyone to support efforts to make the city stronger.
12. Which is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “resilience” in paragraph 1?
A. Courage to fight. B. Plan to get away.
C. Strength to hold on. D. Willingness to help.
13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Sites of the Getty Museum. B. Valuable objects at the Getty Museum.
C. Daily responsibilities of museum workers. D. Fire protection efforts by museum workers.
14. Which of the following has little effect on the survival of the Getty Center?
A. The concrete floors. B. The large space.
C. The watering system. D. The use of stone materials.
15. What does the author mainly want to stress in the last paragraph?
A. The increase of climate-driven disasters.
B The public’s support for disaster protection.
C. The importance of planning ahead against wildfires.
D. The Getty Museum’s success in treasure protection.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. B

第二节(共5小题,每题2.5分,满分12.5分)
People say fortune favors the brave, but taking a leap is easier said than done. ___16___
●Embrace strategic risk.
One of the biggest misconceptions about risk-taking is that if something feels uncomfortable, it’s a sign to back away. But researches have taught us this: ___17___ Ask yourself, “Does this risk match my values? Is it moving me toward something I care about?” If yes, expect some embarrassment. The biggest payoffs live just past that initial awkward phase.
● ___18___
Many of us have grown too afraid of taking risks — maybe because one risk made us embarrassed. A good way to feel less scared of risks is to ask yourself: “What’s one small thing I can do to get used to not knowing what will happen?” Start with bite-size, winnable risks, like speaking up in a meeting, volunteering for a project slightly outside your wheelhouse.
●Breathe in bravery.
Breathe out fear. ___19___ In other words, taking a few deep breaths helps regulate anxiety. Another easy way to stretch your risk- taking muscles is by copying someone you admire. Imagine them in your shoes and how they'd approach your challenge. How would they talk, walk or hold themselves? Even standing tall sends a signal to your brain that “you’ve got this”.
●Forgive yourself.
We all have moments when we don't do the thing that will help us grow. And that’s okay! Instead of beating yourself up, forgive yourself because you’re human. ___20___ Being kind to yourself may just be the best way to step forward toward a braver version of yourself.
A. Enjoy small wins.
B. Our body impacts our mind.
C. Overcome unexpected fears.
D. No one is courageous all the time.
E. Humans always have high expectations.
F. Bravery and awkwardness are sisters in life.
G. The following tips will help you outsmart fear.
【答案】16. G 17. F 18. A 19. B 20. D

Besides studying, I play basketball with classmates twice a week, which not only keeps me healthy but also helps me relax. On weekends, I sometimes read novels or listen to music. My parents came to the US from India in the 1960s, along with other immigrants from India. Back then, there were few Indians anywhere around the US. My father came to Kansas, where he would get his Ph.D. Six months later, my mother came with the three of us kids — my sister, my brother, and me. We were just six, five and three years old then.
It was the very first winter when we were in Kansas. It was so cold, but we didn’t have heavy coats or warm clothes. We didn’t have a concept of how cold it really could be in the Midwest, and there was a new surprise every day. We didn’t have a car or anything like that, and my dad didn’t have a US driver’s license. But anyway, my father was studying for his Ph.D., and he would walk up and down a big hill to and from the campus on a regular basis.
Since I was three years old, I didn’t go to school, but my sister and brother were in school. My father had to walk down the big hill to take them to school every day and then walk back up the hill to go to university. After about three weeks of living like this, a woman called Valerie, whose son John was in the same class as my brother, started noticing them. On a very cold snowy morning, when they went to school as usual,Valerie passed by. She pulled up and said, “I see you on the way every day. Don’t you feel cold without coats?”My father responded,“We didn’t expect the weather would be so cold in Kansas.”Valerie said,“Maybe I can take your daughter and son to school. Would you like a ride?”
Paragraph 1:
Hearing that, my dad nodded with great joy.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Later, Valerie and her family became so dear to my family.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Hearing that, my dad nodded with great joy. He said, “That would be great. That’s very kind of you.” Then my sister and brother got into Valerie’s car on the freezing cold day. After expressing their thanks to Valerie, they greeted John with a smile. After a while, a faint flush rose to my brother’s cheeks because of the warm wind in the car, and my sister had a broad smile on her face. Seeing that, Valerie decided to continue the act from then on.
Paragraph 2:
Later, Valerie and her family became so dear to my family. It just started with this small act of offering a ride, and afterwards the relationship between the two families gradually deepened. We kids have been close friends with John. Valerie and my mother also became very close. Valerie and her family tried to help us in other aspects, such as offering us warm clothes we were in urgent need of at that time. And my mother loved to cook Indian food for Valerie’s family. We all believed that our friendship would last forever.

C
Have you ever wondered what the food you eat every day can tell you about where you come from? Have you ever wondered why people from different parts of the world eat different types of food? Do you ever ask yourself why certain foods or cooking traditions are so important to your culture? There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think.
On a personal level, we grow up eating the food of our cultures. It becomes a part of who each of us is. Many of us connect food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding special and personal value for us.
On a larger level food is an important part of culture.
8. What does the author want to express in paragraph 1?
A. Different types of food in foreign countries. B. Concern about food and culture.
C. Connections between food and culture. D. The relationship between culture and people.
9. What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Traditional food. B. Traditional culture.
C. One generation. D. Childhood.
10. How is paragraph 4 developed?
A. By giving examples. B. By making a comparison.
C. By describing a process. D. By following time order.
11. What can we know from the passage?
A. Creating delicious food is a way of keeping culture.
B. European settlers liked cooking food in American styles.
C Food mirrors all the changes in a country’s history.
D. Chinese people usually do things in a balanced way.
D
As wildfires spread across Los Angeles, the J. Paul Getty Museum showed its strong disaster readiness. With fire within six feet of the Getty Villa on January 7, the museum’s strong protective actions became a great example of resilience.
The Getty Museum’s workers working 24-hour by turns, checked the hilltops around both the Getty Villa and the Getty Center.

●Breathe in bravery

Paragraph 2:
Later, Valerie and her family became so dear to my family.
