Teaching and Learning Design 选择性必修Book2 Unit4 Journey Across A Vast Land 教学设计 Period 5 Teaching and learning contents: Using Language—Talking about scenery and culture along a journey (Listening and talking) Comprehensive teaching and learning objectives: By the end of this period, the students will have been able to: 1) Talk about the pictures on Page 42 to gain context to facilitate listening; 2) Listen to the conversation, understand the girls’ journey to and answer the listening questions; 3) Know about the meanings of some idioms and similes in the conversation; 4) Role-play a conversation about travel in China. Teaching and learning important points: 1) Listening comprehension of a conversation the girls’ journey; 2) Role-playing a conversation about travel in China. Teaching and learning difficult points: 1) Listening comprehension of a conversation the girls’ journey; 2) Knowing about the meanings of some idioms and similes in the conversation; 3) Role-play a conversation about travel in China. Teaching and learning procedure: Step 1 Review and leading in Activity 1 Review and leading in 1. Briefly revise the differences in uses and meanings of past participles (v-ed) and the present participles (v-ing) used as predictive and adverbial. 2. Check the answers to the grammar exercises in the reference book. 3. Lead in the teaching topic—talking about scenery and culture along a journey, and introduce the teaching and learning objectives of this period. Step 2 Listening Activity 2 Pre-listening Talk and share. Look at the pictures and talk about the following questions, and then share the answers. 1. What can you see in the photos? How do these photos help you understand the geography and culture of Canada? Lake Moraine, the large photo, is in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada, about 14 kilometres from Lake Louise. Like Lake Louise, Lake Moraine is fed by glaciers and gets its unique blue colour from rock flour. The mountains behind the lake are in the Valley of Ten Peaks, and they are famous throughout Canada because for many years they were on the Canadian $20 bill. Though the lake can only be reached by hiking trail, it is one of the most photographed places in Canada. The top photo is of a man and a woman skating on Lake Minnewanka (明纽安卡). The middle photo is of young ladies roasting marshmallows (棉花糖) on sticks over a campfire while one of them is playing a ukulele (尤克莱利琴). The bottom photo is of a woman hiking in a forest. Canada is large country with varied and fascinating landscapes and the people their love outdoor activities in nature to enjoy themselves. 2. Which lake does the large photo remind you of? Li Daiyu and her cousin Liu Qina’s rail journey across Canada. 3. What do you think travellers usually talk about with a local person on a train? They will probably be talking about a beautiful alpine (高山的) lake, going skating on a frozen lake, going camping, and going hiking in a forest. Activity 3 While-listening 1. Listen to the conversation twice and answer the questions. For the first time, listen for the general idea and take notes of some key words, and then listen to the conversation again to answer the questions. Some key words: Lake Louise, climate of Canada (in winter and summer), geography of Canada (mountains, the Prairie, lakes, forests), Winnipeg, activities in Winnipeg, Daiyu and Liu Qian’s first long train journey. Answers to the questions: 1) What do people do when the Lake Louise freezes over in winter? People like to go skating on the ice. 2) What does Anna say about Canadian summers? Many areas of south Canada have very hot summers. 3) How far is it from Edmonton to Winnipeg? More than 1,300 kilometres. 4) What kinds of things do people do in Winnipeg? Skiing, hiking, camping, and city things like movies or restaurants on the weekends. 5) What other long rail journey have Li Daiyu and Liu Qian taken? They travelled from Beijing to Moscow on the Trans-Siberian Railway through Mongolia. 2. Listen to the conversation once more to understand it better, pay attention to the following idioms and try to answer more questions. 1) What kind of climate do many areas of south Canada have? A continental climate. 2) What is the mark of this kind of climate? Very hot summers and very cold winters. 3) After they leave Edmonton, what kind of land will they be in? The Prairie, flat and vast. 4) After they leave Winnipeg, what kind of land will they be in? Lakes and forests. 5) What kind of place is Winnipeg? A small city almost in the dead centre of North America. 6) What is the name of the train line between Beijing and Moscow? The Trans-Siberian Railway. 7) What can you see while riding on the train in Mongolia? The grasslands with rolling hills; a few small towns; a few horses or sheep. 3. Learn about idioms. Understand idioms. Idioms are often used in the English language. The meanings of some idioms can be guessed. However, many others need to be studied and remembered. Match the following idioms and similes with their meanings. Check the answers and then the teacher gives necessary explanations to learn about more idioms. 1) words fail me—D. I’m surprised. 2) as hot as an oven—F. very warm 3) as flat as a pancake—A. with no mountains or hills 4) as far as the eye can—C. for a long distance 5) dead centre—G. the exact middle of something 6) kill time—E. spend time 7) you name it—B. all kinds of things An idiom is a group of words in a fixed order that have a particular meaning. List as many idioms as you can think of. Here are some examples. Figure out their meanings. a slip of tongue, on top of the world, be fed up, cost an arm and a leg, a piece of cake, a hot potato 4. Reconstruct the text by summarizing the main idea of the conversation with the help of the above information. Well, I have to go. I’ll talk to you later. Activity 5 Role-playing 1. In groups of three, continue the conversation about Canada and China based on your own travel experiences or the information you heard or read in this unit. End the conversation naturally. Learn about the new words and then prepare the conversation. New words: 1) contrary adj.相反的;相对立的n. 相反的事实(或事情) (be) contrary to相反的;相对立的 on the contrary 正相反;恰恰相反 to the contrary 相反的;相反地 e.g. On the contrary, not all results are satisfying. In fact, it provides us with an example to the contrary. LQ: Then we entered the Tibetan Plateau. D: The scenery there was simply fantastic. Green grass as far as the eye could see. And there were so many wild animals. LQ: Yes! We saw a lot of antelopes, yaks, deer… and I think I even saw a snow leopard. A: Good heavens! That’s one of the rarest animals on earth. LQ: But you know what was really extraordinary about our trip? A: No, what? LQ: The railway is so high that the trains have a special oxygen supply for the passengers, kind of like you would find on an airplane, so that no one will become ill. A: You’re kidding!
