A year ago, Sushila Meena wouldn’t have even dreamt of playing with famous sports persons like Sachin Tendulkar. But sometimes dreams that come true are those you never knew you had.
The 10-year-old cricketer (板球手) shot to fame when Tendulkar shared a video of her bowling (投球) action on social media, comparing her to bowler Zaheer Khan, who was the key player in India winning the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. But her story is much more than just an Instagram post. Sushila’s journey from a small village to national fame is a testament to her hard work. And it couldn’t have been possible without the support of her coach, Ishwarl Meena.
Ishwarl Meena, a dedicated coach, began teaching cricket in June 2017 when the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup was in full swing. He started training girls as a way to connect them with their school and to enable them to excel in women’s cricket — where competition is less fierce. “If they play cricket, they get connected to the school and come more often,” he explains.
He recalls that Sushila joined his free training programme in the third grade. Initially, Sushila was focused on batting, like most other girls, but she soon took on bowling to broaden her skills. Under his guidance, Sushila has refined her technique, following the coach’s instruction that bowlers should spin (旋转) the ball. “Sushila’s bowling became good around 3 — 4 months ago. I remember last year I thought she wouldn’t be able to bowl, but now she has progressed remarkably,” he notes.
Sushila comes from a humble background; her father works as a labourer while her mother is a housewife. In her village, due to poor local economic conditions, opportunities for youth are limited. Despite these challenges, Sushila remains committed to pursuing her passion for cricket. “I want to play for India one day,” she says with determination. Her dream is to break barriers and pave the way for other girls from rural areas to take up sports and become excellent.
24. What made Sushila famous nationwide?
A. Her performance in a national competition. B. Her background from a poor small village.
C. Her experience of defeating Zaheer Khan. D. Her cricket skill shown on social media.
25. What is the purpose of Coach Meena training girls in cricket?
A. To focus on less competitive sports. B. To prepare for Women’s World Cup.
C. To train the most talented students. D. To get girls more involved in school.
26. What do we know about Sushila’s bowling skills?
A. She remains better at batting than bowling. B. She broke her barriers through practice.
C. She made steady progress from last year. D. She showed talent at the very beginning.
27. Which words can best describe Sushila Meena?
A. Determined and ambitious. B. Curious and courageous.
C. Optimistic and intelligent. D. Humble and passionate.
D 25. D 26. C 27. A

One common explanation for why children spend so much time on screens is that smartphones and social-media platforms are addicting them. Kids socialize online instead of in person because that’s what tech has trained them to want. But this misses a key part of the story.
In March, the Harris Poll surveyed more than 500 children aged 8 to 12 across U.S. A majority reported having smartphones, and about half said that most of their friends use social media. But most children in the survey said that they aren’t allowed to be out in public without an adult. Fewer than half of the 8 and 9-year-olds have been to a grocery store alone, and many aren’t permitted to play unsupervised (无监管) even in their own front yard.
Yet these are exactly the kinds of freedoms that kids said they long for. Children want to meet up in person, no screens or supervision. But because so many parents restrict their ability to socialize in the real world on their own, kids can only turn to the one thing that allows them to hang out with no adults around: their phones.
Since the 1980s, parents have grown more and more afraid that unsupervised time will expose their kids to physical or emotional harm. In another recent survey, parents were asked what they thought would happen if two 10-year-olds played in a local park without adults around, 60% thought the children would likely get injured. However, kids will always have more spare hours than adults can supervise — a gap that devices now fill.
We certainly don’t blame parents for this. Telling children to go outside doesn’t work so well when no one else’s kids are there. That’s why we’re so glad that groups around the country are experimenting with ways to rebuild childhood. In Piedmont, for example, a network of parents started dropping their kids off at the park every Friday to play unsupervised. Sometimes the kids argue or get bored — which is good. After all, learning to handle boredom and conflict is an essential part of child development.
28. What is the finding of the Harris Poll survey?
A. Most kids have no access to smartphones. B. Most kids lack real-world socialization.
C. Many kids are unwilling to be in public. D. Many kids long for playing supervised.
29. What is parents’ main concern about their children?
A. They may get hurt outside. B. They may get addicted to screens.
C. They may get bored at home. D. They may resist outdoor activities.
30. Why is the example of Piedmont’s park play mentioned?
A. To reveal the problems with unsupervised play. B. To show an effort to restore childhood freedom.
C. To highlight the importance of supervision. D. To prove the success against digital devices.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A Why Can’t Our Kids Log Off? B. Where Have the Children Gone?
C. Can We Leave the Kids Alone? D. Should We Let Children Go Out?
B 29. A 30. B 31. A
根据第二段“But most children in the survey said that they aren’t allowed to be out in public without an adult. Fewer than half of the 8 and 9-year-olds have been to a grocery store alone, and many aren’t permitted to play unsupervised (无监管) even in their own front yard.(但在这项调查中,大多数孩子表示,他们未经成年人陪同是不能在公共场合活动的。在8岁和9岁的孩子中,只有不到一半的孩子曾独自去过超市,而且很多孩子甚至连在自家前院无人看管的情况下玩耍都是被禁止的)”可知,哈里斯民意调查的调查结果是大多数孩子缺乏实际的社会交往经验。故选B。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Since the 1980s, parents have grown more and more afraid that unsupervised time will expose their kids to physical or emotional harm. In another recent survey, parents were asked what they thought would happen if two 10-year-olds played in a local park without adults around, 60% thought the children would likely get injured.(自20世纪80年代以来,家长们越来越担心孩子在无人监管的情况下会遭受身体或心理上的伤害。在另一项最近的调查中,家长们被问及如果两个10岁的孩子在当地的公园里玩耍而没有大人在旁看管,他们认为孩子可能会怎样,60%的人认为孩子们很可能会受伤)”可知,父母最担心孩子可能会在外面受到伤害。故选A。
根据最后一段“That’s why we’re so glad that groups around the country are experimenting with ways to rebuild childhood. In Piedmont, for example, a network of parents started dropping their kids off at the park every Friday to play unsupervised.(这就是为什么我们如此欣喜地看到全国各地都有团体在探索如何重建孩子们的童年时光。例如,在皮埃蒙特,一群家长自发组织起来,每周五都会把孩子送到公园里让他们自由玩耍,不进行任何监管)”可知,皮埃蒙特公园的案例是为了展示对恢复童年自由的一种努力。故选B。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“One common explanation for why children spend so much time on screens is that smartphones and social-media platforms are addicting them. Kids socialize online instead of in person because that’s what tech has trained them to want. But this misses a key part of the story.(关于孩子们为何会花大量时间盯着屏幕,一个常见的解释是智能手机和社交媒体平台让他们产生了依赖。孩子们选择在网上进行社交活动而非面对面交流,因为这是科技所培养出来的他们的需求所在。但这种解释忽略了事情的关键部分)”结合文章主要说明了美国调查显示多数孩子因父母限制缺乏现实社交自由,只能通过手机社交,这源于父母对孩子外出受伤的担忧。多地正尝试重建童年自由,如让孩子无监管玩耍,助力其成长可知,A选项“为何我们的孩子不能“下线”呢?”最符合文章标题。故选A。

The age of pre-sorting mixed plastic waste may soon be over. The secret weapon is a cheap catalyst (催化剂) targeting the most problematic plastic. The findings are detailed in a study published in the journal Nature Chemistry.
Even after decades of worldwide efforts, recycling plastic remains much easier said than done. The frustrating reality is largely thanks to polyolefins (聚烯烃). Humans make about 220 million tons of polyolefin-based products every year, most of which are single-use items like milk bottles, trash bags, and juice boxes.
However, less than 10 percent of polyolefin products are recycled annually, resulting in mountains of waste destined for landfills or being burnt. That’s because while other plastics are typically broken down with catalysts, breaking down polyolefin is difficult due to its tough carbon-carbon molecular bonds (分子键). “Polyolefins don’t have any weak links. Every bond is incredibly strong and chemically unreactive,” said Yosi Kratish, a chemist at Northwestern University.
Meanwhile, burning polyolefins requires temperatures as high as 700℃. “Everything can be burned, of course,” said Kratish. “But we wanted to find an elegant way to add the minimum amount of energy to obtain the maximum value product.” A potential solution combining hydrogen gas and a catalyst can deconstruct polyolefin plastic into useful hydrocarbons, but the process also involves high temperatures and expensive catalysts. But Kratish’s team found a workaround.
Unlike rare metals, engineers discovered that an alternative called cationic nickel (阳离子镍) is cheap and easy to collect. Other nickel-based catalysts include multiple reaction sites. Cationic nickel’s single-site variant allows it to function more like a precise sharp knife. Instead of breaking down all of a plastic’s structure, this option specifically targets those carbon-carbon bonds at a much lower temperature and with half the hydrogen gas pressure.
“That is amazing. It’s definitely not something anybody expected” Kratish said. If proven to be scalable (可规模化) and efficient, the new catalyst could largely cut down the need for plastic pre-sorting while also reducing the amount of microplastics released into the environment every day.
32. Recycling polyolefin remains difficult due to its ________.
A. industrial value B. practical application C. chemical structure D. environmental impact
33. What does “an elegant way” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Combining hydrogen gas with cationic nickel. B. Deconstructing polyolefins into hydrocarbons.
C. Burning polyolefins at a high temperature. D. Breaking down all of a plastic’s structure.
34. What is the advantage of cationic nickel over other catalysts?
A. It avoids many steps of processing. B. It operates effectively at a lower cost.
C. It breaks down all types of plastic. D. It produces higher quality end products.
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The challenge of recycling polyolefins. B. The process of breaking carbon bonds.
C. A basic theory of applying catalysts. D. A new method of recycling polyolefins.
C 33. A 34. B 35. D

根据第三段“That’s because while other plastics are typically broken down with catalysts, breaking down polyolefin is difficult due to its tough carbon-carbon molecular bonds (分子键).(这是因为,其他塑料通常可以通过催化剂分解,而聚烯烃的分解却很困难,因为其碳-碳分子键非常坚固)”可知,由于聚烯烃的化学结构原因,对其进行回收处理仍然存在困难。
根据倒数第二段“Unlike rare metals, engineers discovered that an alternative called cationic nickel (阳离子镍) is cheap and easy to collect. Other nickel-based catalysts include multiple reaction sites. Cationic nickel’s single-site variant allows it to function more like a precise sharp knife. Instead of breaking down all of a plastic’s structure, this option specifically targets those carbon-carbon bonds at a much lower temperature and with half the hydrogen gas pressure.(与稀有金属不同,工程师们发现一种名为“阳离子镍”的替代品价格低廉且易于获取。其他基于镍的催化剂具有多个反应位点。阳离子镍的单位型变体使其更像是一把精准锋利的刀。它不会破坏塑料的整个结构,而是专门针对那些碳-碳键,且在更低的温度下操作,氢气压力也仅为常规方法的一半)”可知,与其他催化剂相比,阳离子镍成本更低,运行效果却更佳。故选B。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“The age of pre-sorting mixed plastic waste may soon be over. The secret weapon is a cheap catalyst (催化剂) targeting the most problematic plastic. The findings are detailed in a study published in the journal Nature Chemistry.(对混合塑料废弃物进行预先分类的时代或许即将结束。

根据上文““We are what we eat” — or so the saying goes. From high-calorie meals to low-fat lunches, much of our health depends on what we eat.(“我们吃什么就成为什么样的人”——这种说法是这么讲的。从高热量的餐食到低脂肪的午餐,我们的健康状况很大程度上取决于我们所吃的食物)”以及后文“However, a growing body of evidence suggests that our mental well-being is also deeply influenced by how we prepare our food — the act of cooking itself.(然而,越来越多的证据表明,我们的心理健康也深受我们烹饪方式的影响——也就是烹饪这一行为本身)”可知,前文提到“我们的健康很大程度上取决于饮食”,后文用“However”转折,强调“心理健康也受烹饪行为影响”。
根据上文“Some people are now advocating the therapeutic value of cooking food. It’s not just about the end result but the experience someone goes through.(如今,有一些人开始强调烹饪食物所具有的治疗作用。
根据上文“TV chef and author Nadiya Hussain agrees that cooking is great for helping our mind. She loves to bake and became the champion of the TV show, The Great British Bake Off. She says that baking has never really been about the cake.(电视烹饪节目主持人兼作家纳迪亚·侯赛因认为烹饪对我们的大脑有益。她喜欢烘焙,并在电视节目《英国烘焙大赛》中夺冠。她表示,烘焙其实并非仅仅关乎蛋糕本身)”以及后文“And she thinks that baking is an important tool for our socialization. (而且她认为烘焙是促进我们社交的重要方式)”可知,前文引用Nadiya的观点“烘焙从来都不只是为了蛋糕”,C项“重要的是烘焙带来的平静感”直接解释了“不只是为了蛋糕”的核心——烘焙的心理价值,与后文“烘焙是社交的重要工具”共同构成Nadiya支持“烹饪有益心理”的理由,逻辑连贯。故选C。
【39题详解】
根据上文“Cooking some delicious food has helped some of us get through hard times; it’s helped take our mind off things and given us something to do.(做一些美味的食物曾帮助我们度过了一些艰难的时刻;它能让我们暂时忘却烦恼,还能给我们带来一些事情可做)”以及后文“Nicole Farmer, who studies how food impacts our behaviour and mental health, told BBC online that “cooking represents the shared human experience of taking care of people through food, so I think that’s where it creates positive emotions.”(研究食物如何影响我们的行为和心理健康的妮可·法默尔在接受BBC网站采访时表示:“烹饪代表着人类通过食物来关爱他人的共同经历,所以我认为这就是它能带来积极情绪的原因所在。”)”
根据后文“As we start to mix with friends and family in the kitchen, we can put us all in the right frame of mind and enjoy the benefits of those shared moments.(当我们与亲朋好友在厨房里相聚时,我们能够让自己处于恰当的心境之中,从而享受那些共同时光所带来的种种好处)”可知,后文提到“当我们开始与朋友家人在厨房互动时,能保持良好心态,享受共享时光”,核心是“烹饪的社交属性”。 故选A。

Lily, an 8-year-old girl, stood at the entrance of the local holiday market, clutching (紧抱住) her piggy bank tightly under her arm. The fierce winter air bit her cheeks, but her determination warmed her from within. Her mother, watching from a nearby cafe, felt a mix of heartache and pride. Earlier that week, while shopping for her mother, Lily had realized that if her father were still here, he would have helped her pick the perfect Christmas present for Mom. Now, it was up to her alone.
Lily’s father had passed away from cancer when she was almost three. Though her memories of him were faint, she carried the weight of his absence every day, especially during the holidays. Today, with $25 of her saved pocket money in hand, she was on a mission to find a gift that would convey all the love her mother deserved.
The market was busy with people, laughter, and the scent (气味) of roasted chestnuts. Stands were dotted with twinkling lights and handmade decorations. Lily moved carefully through the crowd, her eyes scanning each stand for something special. She passed knitted scarves, scented candles, and wooden toys, but nothing felt quite right. Then, at a quiet corner stand, an elderly woman was selling unique, hand-painted music boxes. One in particular caught Lily’s eye — it was pale blue, her mother’s favorite color, and had a delicate snowflake design.
Lily approached the stand, her small fingers tracing the music box’s smooth surface. “It plays ‘Silent Night’”, the woman said gently. Lily’s eyes lit up; that was the song her mother always sang to her on Christmas Eve. Without hesitation, she handed over her savings. The woman wrapped the gift carefully and placed it in a small bag. Clutching the bag, Lily felt a wave of accomplishment and love. She turned and hurried back toward the cafe, eager to see her mother’s reaction.

Lily rushed into the café, cheeks flushed with excitement. She plopped down beside her mother, holding the small bag out eagerly. “Mom, Mom! I found the perfect Christmas present for you!” Her voice trembled with joy as she handed over the wrapped box. Her mother wiped the mist from her eyes and took the bag gently, curiosity sparkling in her gaze. “You’ve been gone for a while, honey. What did my little girl pick?” The rustle of wrapping paper filled the quiet corner of the café, and Lily’s heart beat fast with anticipation — she couldn’t wait to share the magic of the music box.
Back home that evening, the gift was finally unwrapped. As the pale blue music box came into view, her mother gasped softly. “It’s... it’s my favorite color,” she murmured. When she wound it up, the familiar melody of “Silent Night” filled the room, and tears streamed down her cheeks. “Your dad used to hum this song to me when we decorated the Christmas tree,” she said, pulling Lily into a warm hug. “This is the most precious gift I’ve ever received.” Lily buried her face in her mother’s shoulder, feeling the weight of her father’s absence fade into warmth.

Sights & Experiences in Belize You Don’t Want to Miss
Did you know that Belize is home to some of the well-protected Mayan ruins in the region? If you’re heading to Belize, keep some activities in mind when you visit. They’ll take you to some of the country’s lesser-known adventures.
See the “Crystal Maiden” of Actun Tunichil Muknal
Actun Tunichil Muknal is a cave system that the Mayans first discovered as early as 300 AD. It was a spiritual site for centuries, playing a critical role in Mayan culture. Archaeologists know that it was used by the Mayans for ceremonial purposes thanks to the presence of skeletons (骨架). The most famous is the “Crystal Maiden”, a preserved skeleton at the bottom of the cave.
Learn about Garifuna Culture in Hopkins
After your adventure in Cockscomb Basin, head to Hopkins to sense Belize’s Garifuna culture, which is a melting pot that includes elements of West Africa, the Caribbean, and other native groups. It’s found in Belize, along with neighboring areas like Guatemala and Honduras. When you visit, you can book tours that focus on different elements of Garifuna culture, such as food, music, history, and language.
Sample Marie Sharp’s hot sauce in Dangriga
While you’re in the area, consider a visit to Dangriga, which is home to the world-famous Marie Sharp’s hot sauce factory. Whether or not you’re a fan of hot sauce, a tour will give you a crash course in the complexities of making a delicious hot sauce. And, yes, they have mild versions for you to sample
Learn about Mayan ruins at Lamanai Archaeological Reserve
Belize is dotted with Mayan ruins — and each is more impressive than the last. I recommend visiting the Lamanai Archaeological Reserve, as you can reach the site by water. From there, you can learn about the history and modern significance of the ruins. Best of all, it’s surrounded by jungle, meaning you might spot a few jungle creatures during your visit.

27 Which words can best describe Sushila Meena?
A. Determined and ambitious. B. Curious and courageous.
C. Optimistic and intelligent. D. Humble and passionate.

A. Why Can’t Our Kids Log Off? B. Where Have the Children Gone?
C. Can We Leave the Kids Alone? D. Should We Let Children Go Out?
D
