Time zones and public holidays are obvious mismatches. But it’s email that causes the real headache. Living in Bangkok, I jump between Line, a popular instant communication application, and Gmail, an email service platform, and sometimes get tangled up in the middle, missing emails considered urgent in one timezone and sending emails considered unnecessary in the other. I arrived at a meeting in the Thai capital recently to find that the email I had sent from the taxi to excuse my traffic-related lateness had become a point of discussion around the water cooler. “He sent an email to explain that he was going to be five minutes late? How sweet.” Embarrassment aside, it was a useful reminder of Southeast Asian norms and expectations. Pretty much everyone is late for meetings in Bangkok, so only serious delays require a message-and email is reserved for emergency cancellations. When my colleagues from London came to visit, I had to explain communication preferences to them. “You need to download Line from Application Store.” Over here, email feels awkward and business-like and more formal: the modern equivalent of a dusty Post Office box that gets checked and cleared into the dustbin every now and again. But Line suits this part of the world, where communication is personal, relationship-based. There are drawbacks, of course. Line IDs are often nicknames or emojis so finding old contacts can demand either a sharp memory or a lot of scrolling. There is no real system for saving messages either, which means the HR and legal teams in London and Paris are often concerned. However, relying less on email does not mean we abandon a rules-based system. Changing status “On holiday” works just like a regular out-of-office email and formal things are done in person with a paper record. The world might feel smaller thanks to technology, but cultural differences in communication continue to exist, serving as a constant source of freshness and moments of insight for those who venture abroad. It’s part of what makes travelling and working abroad so rewarding. 4. What does the author find the most challenging? A. Traveling between time zones. B. Arranging proper holidays. C. Sending work emails. D. Downloading Line. 5. Why did the author’s email become a point of discussion? A. It was sent to the wrong person. B. It was considered needless by people. C. It contained embarrassing information. D. It was canceled at the last minute. 6. Why does the author mention the “dusty Post Office box”? A. To illustrate email is too official and rarely-used. B. To describe the charm of traditional mail service. C. To emphasize the trouble of checking dusty mails. D. To explain the development of communication tools. 7. What’s the author’s attitude towards cultural differences in communication? A. Critical and worried. B. Indifferent and neutral. C. Positive and appreciative. D. Confused and frustrated. C When it comes to embracing artificial intelligence, men seem to be all in, but women are more cautious in their usage. Women are adopting AI tools at a 25% lower rate than men on average. When it comes to AI usage on phones, the gender divide is even more striking; between May 2023 and November 2024, a mere 27.2% of total ChatGPT application downloads were estimated to have come from women. The researchers found that in many cases, women worried that their skills and knowledge would be questioned if they used AI. “A female software engineer may be worried that if she uses AI, her manager might view her as less competent,” said Rembrand Koning, one of the coauthors of the study. It’s possible that high-performing women may place self-restrictions on AI use, said Catalina Franco, another co-author of the study. “For example, top-performing female students may be more cautious about using tools that have not been clearly approved by their professors or may worry that reliance on AI could signal a lack of competence,” she said. On the contrary, men are less worried about potential penalties (不利的后果) for using AI and more willing to try it out. Beyond being less cautious, men are also more likely to have an interest and enroll in science-related fields, which translates to having a general interest in emerging technology like AI. “The disparities (差异) in the adoption of generative AI is a design problem — it is developed by a mostly white male workforce and trained on the questions and preferences of men — not a gender problem,” said Catalina Franco. “Women may not be jumping on the AI bandwagon for the simple reason that the tech isn’t built with them in mind.” If AI’s workforce impact is inevitable, women must now strategically upskill and experiment. Otherwise, disparities in AI use could widen gender gaps in pay and job opportunities. What matters currently is not merely who are more willing to adopt AI, but how they use it, noted MIT researcher Dishita Turakhia. 8. Why do some women avoid using AI tools? A. It fails to improve their skills. B. It brings about unkind judgment. C. It is forbidden by their professors. D. It leads to job losses for them. 9. What contributes to men’s embracing AI? A. They are drawn by science-related fields B. They seek more opportunities in their careers. C. They desire to develop new technologies. D. They are unaware of the potential risks of AI. 10. What do the underlined words “jumping on the AI bandwagon” in Para. 6 mean? A. Criticizing AI technology seriously B. Showing little interest in AI products C. Joining the trend of using AI actively D. Working on AI research and development 11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. The Risks of AI Tools Faced by Women. B. AI Widens Gaps Between Men and Women. C. Women Are More Careful than Men with AI D. Overcome Skepticism to Adopt New Technology. D A little over 20 percent of India’s households own an air conditioner or cooler, and fewer than a third have refrigerators — leaving hundreds of millions of people to face rising temperatures without artificial cooling. But an innovation that’s at least 3,000 years old terracotta (赤陶) is emerging as a low-cost, low-energy alternative. Once used by the Bronze Age Harappan civilization to store water this earthenware still stands on the shelves of rural Indian homes as pots that cool water without electricity and cost as little as a dollar each. “Terracotta’s porous (多孔的) surface allows water to slowly evaporate (蒸发), carrying heat away and cooling the space around it,” says Adithya Pradyumna, an environmental health researcher at Azim Premji University in Bengaluru. Drawing on this principle, architects in India are turning to terracotta for new, passive cooling solutions that range from clay refrigerators to tiles and outer walls with holes that allow natural air to flow and help heat and moisture transfer between indoor and outdoor environments. Passive cooling uses building design to regulate indoor temperatures with natural materials, strategic airflow and well-controlled shading. This approach works particularly well in dry places — like parts of the Pacific Northwest, where it can reduce air-conditioning loads by up to 70 percent. A pioneer in this field is Delhi-based design company Ant Studio, whose CoolAnt project uses terracotta as a second skin on concrete buildings. “We’ve taken advantage of its water absorbing quality and observed average temperature drops of six to eight degrees Celsius across more than 30 sites” in India, says studio founder Monish Siripurapu. Meanwhile Gujarat-based company MittiCool has created clay “refrigerators” that purportedly keep food fresh for three to five days without power — invaluable in homes without reliable electricity. Niyati Gupta, a senior program associate at research institute WRI India, says terracotta “can work with existing cooling systems and reduce our dependence on the fossil fuel power. That alone could be a game changer for both the energy and construction sectors.” 12. Why does the author list the figures in Paragraph 1? A. To compare different cooling methods. B. To stress the seriousness of the problem. C. To show the popularity of air conditioners. D. To explain the cost of artificial cooling. 13. What is the advantage of terracotta? A. It works perfectly in all areas. B. It uses less electricity to make. C. It’s inexpensive and energy-saving. D. It shows the beauty of ancient wisdom. 14. What is the primary function of the holes in the terracotta tiles and walls? A. To trap heat and moisture. B. To store water for cooling. C. To allow air to pass through. D. To make water cool faster. 15. What is the main idea of Paragraph 6? A. Terracotta’s modern applications. B. Temperature drops due to terracotta. C. Achievements of two Indian companies. D. The advantages of terracotta over electricity. They say a dog is man’s best friend, but sometimes the two just don’t connect. When this connection fails to form, daily coexistence becomes challenging for both the owner and the pet. Giving up a family pet can be heartbreaking. ___16___ Their work has confirmed a common suspicion: dogs really look like their owners. More importantly, for a lasting friendship, they often have similar personalities. How do these similarities show? One area is physical appearance. ___17___ Some sources of similarity are clear — women with short hair often own dogs with floppy ears, while those with long hair prefer long-eared breeds. ___18___ Introverted (内向的) owners often have dogs that are more nervous around strangers. On the other hand, conscientious (认真的) people own dogs that are more motivated and easier to train. Why does this happen? Psychologists say that humans naturally value relationships with those who look and behave like them. ___19___ However, the matching of personalities is more complex than the matching of looks. It’s not just about choice. ___20___ For example, being around less confident people could make a dog more nervous. Similar influences have been found in human relationships, like married couples who grow to resemble each other over time. So, for the best results, finding a dog that looks and thinks like you might be important. Alternatively, you could consider a cat. A. Another similar mirroring effect happens with personality. B. Adopting a dog from a shelter can be a rewarding experience C. Training a dog to be friendly requires a lot of patience and time. D. Dogs often physically resemble their owners in noticeable ways. E. So researchers in Germany are studying what makes a perfect match. F. This idea also seems to apply to the bonds between humans and dogs. G. To prepare for Diwali, one of the most important and widely celebrated festivals in my home country, I was busy enjoying the task of cleaning along with my younger sister in the shop of my family. Suddenly, the door bell rang. I opened the door only to find myself attracted by the beauty of a lady in a red cotton dress with a black border. She had extremely good features. Without a second thought I complimented her by saying, “You are a very beautiful lady.” I welcomed her and asked what her name was. She replied, “I am Bindu.” After a happy conversation between two girls, Bindu shared her contact details and address and left. The Diwali day had finally arrived. I told my mom that I was going to meet Bindu at her place that afternoon. My mother agreed but told me to go home early. I was given a warm welcome at Bindu’s place. The welcome smile especially made me feel at home. Bindu said it was for the first time that “normal people” other than government community people (they helped the poor) came to their society to visit a friend. Our endless talk continued. I noticed, throughout our conversation, Bindu hadn’t said a single negative word. She didn’t discuss her sorrow, struggle and problems. Through the visit, I felt a positive atmosphere. Then I realized words could make a powerful impact on a person’s life. After that moment I would avoid negative words while interacting with people. Days passed by and our companionship grew stronger. Whenever I felt stressed at work, I called Bindu. Her powerful words motivated me. Those days I was staying in Udaipur, searching for a new room. Finally, I selected two rooms, but because of my divorce (离婚) (In my home country, women, especially divorced women, are always looked down upon), landowners refused to provide the room. I was totally frustrated. I decided to call my friend Bindu and share my experience with her. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Holding back doubts, I bravely continued my search. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 绵阳南山中学高2023级高三第四次教学质量检测 英语 (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:150分) 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? I am writing to heartily invite you to deliver a speech during our upcoming “Spreading Beautiful Voices Across Cultures” International Understanding Cultural Festival. It is widely recognized that cultural exchange plays a vital role in education, and you, who have a unique cross-cultural background, are perfectly suited to address this topic. You could speak on any topic related to cultural exchange and share your valuable insights with the audience. The festival will run from November 10th to 15th, offering flexibility in scheduling. Would you be available for a one-hour session on any afternoon that week? Looking forward to your reply! I decided to call my friend Bindu and share my experience with her. My voice cracked as I poured out the two rejections — each “no” replaying in my head. She sighed softly, then said firmly: “Frustrated over two? Rejection is now a part of my life. Don’t lose hope. Believe in yourself. Be patient. It will all work out.” Her warm, steady tone wrapped around me like a hug. Like always, her powerful words not only healed my pain, but also kindled the flame of hope in my heart. Holding back doubts, I bravely continued my search. After months of endless calls and disappointing viewings, I finally found a sunlit room with a small balcony. The landlady, a kind old lady, never cared about my marital status. I grabbed my phone right away to call Bindu with the good news — I had settled down at last. I sank into the chair on the balcony, bathed in the sunshine of relief and joy. Bindu’s words echoed in my ears — softly but steadily: “Believe in yourself. It will all work out.”
