James Clear, who did a lot of research on formation of habits, is the writer of Atomic Habits. 1 It has sold over 15 million copies and has been translated into more than 50 languages. And his website receives millions of visitors each month.
2 That’s because the book introduces a practical system (系统) for creating good habits and breaking bad ones. Readers everywhere are very interested in Clear’s “science of tiny habits”.

When offered a cigarette (香烟), one says, “No, thanks. I’m trying to give up smoking.” The other says, “No, thanks. I’m not a smoker.” While the first man still sees himself as a smoker, the second man doesn’t. Clear says, “Bad habits will die more easily if you focus on who you want to become.”

1 Being moved by a movie, seeing a loved one off, or being angry about something can all cause tears to roll down our faces. We all have the power to cry, but is that a good thing?
When you think about it, shedding (流泪) tears is a strange thing to do. But it seems to be normal when we get sad, upset or even when we’re very happy. 2 However, the feeling is the same. Your eyes tighten (变紧) and before you know it, tears are streaming down your face. Some of us may sniffle (抽鼻子) a little while others may cry like a baby.
Some people suggest that it’s women who cry more than men. It is true. A study in the UK found that women did cry more than men. 3 Or are they just uncomfortable about showing their true feelings?
One place where emotions (情绪) run high is in the workplace. Someone might be stressed. 4 A scientist, Joanna Cross, told the BBC, “Crying is often a build-up of failure and bad situations.” She explained how someone might start crying when they were just asked to make a cup of tea, “Actually that’s often a backlog (积压) of situations.”
Though crying doesn’t change situations for the better, it can actually make you feel better. 5 So perhaps more of us, especially men, should cry more often if it is necessary. It isn’t a bad thing.
A.Their work might be too much.
B.It can clear the bad feelings you’ve had.
C.The reasons why people cry are different from each other.
D.What makes you cry?
E.But does this mean men don’t get as upset or sad as women?

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last very long. 1 You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don’t tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust. 2
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes, of course. Instead you have to learn how to share things you enjoy, your hobbies and interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. 3 They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them you help your friend know you better.
Sooner or later, everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. 4 So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so you can understand the problem better.
5 But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friendships, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.
A.To have a friend, you must learn to be one.
B.No two friendships are ever exactly alike.
C.Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem.
D.These can be valuable to a friend.
E.Good friends always trust one another to speak and act honestly.
Ancient Chinese buildings are an important part of Chinese culture. However, because of the long age, natural disasters, man-made damage (损害) and other reasons, many ancient buildings are facing serious problems. 1
Watch your behavior.
When you visit ancient buildings, it’s important to watch your actions and their effects on the buildings. You shouldn’t touch the ancient buildings, because the surfaces (表面) of them are often very fragile (脆弱的). What’s more, you should not write on ancient buildings. 2 At the same time, you should not climb them, because climbing ancient buildings will not only do harm to them, but also be dangerous to yourself.
Join in activities.
3 For example, you can go to cultural festivals and do some volunteer activities about ancient buildings locally. While visiting the local ancient buildings, you can also learn about their historical stories and cultural background.
4
You can also help protect ancient buildings by spreading their value and the need to protect them. For example, you can use social media to share information about ancient buildings, in order to let others know the importance of protecting them. At the same time, you can take part in some speech events about ancient buildings during weekends.
Protecting ancient Chinese buildings is a responsibility we all have. We should actively take part in the protection of ancient Chinese buildings, so that the world can better understand ancient Chinese buildings and Chinese culture. 5
A.Spread information.
B.You can choose to take part in local activities.
C.Because writing will do damage to their historical value.
D.So it’s important to do our best to protect them from now on.
E.We can let Chinese culture shine more brightly by doing so.

Help with Chores.
You can also give the gift of helping out. For your parents, you can write down different chores on pieces of paper, like sweeping the kitchen, and then place them in a box. 5

A speech competition needs you to use your speaking skills. While preparing, you should try to express your ideas clearly to make yourself understood. During the competition, you’ll meet a new challenge. It is difficult to draw the attention of the listeners. But don’t worry! 1 .
Choose a topic
Make the topic of your speech into one single sentence and then start to present. This will help you make a better expression of your idea. 2 .

The end of your speech is as important as the beginning. You should summarize your main points and leave the listeners with a powerful final message or a good chance for them to think deeply.
4
After writing your speech, practice it aloud many times. This will help you remember the content and improve your fluency and confidence. Friends and family can be your audience. 5 .
Following these steps will help you prepare effectively (有效地) and increase your chance of success in the competition.
A.Practice makes perfect
B.You can also practice in front of a mirror
C.Following the points below will make it much easier
D.The middle part of your speech should be full of interest
E.Try to research more and learn what others say when you choose a topic

When you go out for a walk or a jog (慢跑), how often do you see litter along the road? Maybe a plastic bottle, some food wrappers, an empty drink can or some cigarette butts (烟蒂)?
Of course, all of this litter is bad for the environment. 1 Well, a new sport called “plogging” is encouraging people to do just that.
Plogging is a combination (结合) of the word “jogging” with “plocka upp”, which means “pick up” in Swedish. 2
The word plogging was created by the Swedish runner Erik Ahlström, who was unhappy with the litter he saw every time he went for a run. He also created the Plogga website to encourage people everywhere to take up plogging and hold plogging events.
Stockholm, where Ahlström lives, became the first city to organize a plogging event in 2016. 3 The World Plogging Championship has been held every year in Italy since 2021. In 2024, over 80 ploggers from 13 countries took part in the event and collected over 1,200 kilograms of trash.
4 And it’s also good for your health because you’re running and squatting (蹲下) to pick up litter. According to research, plogging burns more calories (卡路里) than jogging on its own.
Of course, not everyone likes jogging. 5 The Plogga website recommends doing it while cycling, skateboarding, or even just walking — whatever way you choose to get outside and move.
A.Plogging is good for the environment.
B.But how often do we stop to pick it up?
C.Now the sport is spreading around the world.
D.The idea is simple: pick up litter while you jog!
E.But you can combine picking up litter with all kinds of sports.

5.根据“But all true friendships have three things in common.”可知,空格处与此句是转折关系,所以空格处应表示友谊是不同的。选项B“没有两种友谊是完全相同的。”符合语境。故选B。

Giving gifts during the holidays has been a tradition for thousands of years. Many children don’t buy gifts because they don’t have money, but some of the best gifts are free. You can give special gifts to family and friends without spending money. 1
Think About the Person.
First, think about who will get your gift. What do they like? What hobbies do they have? If they enjoy music, you can make a playlist (歌单) for them or ask family members to have a small party together. 2 If they like sports, you can play ball games with them.
Make a Memory Gift.
A special gift idea is a photo collage (照片拼贴). With an adult’s help, print out pictures of good memories with the person, then glue them onto thick paper. 3 It can be kept for years. You could also record a video message sharing a happy memory.
4
Spending time with loved ones is one of the best gifts. You can make simple “tickets” for fun activities like hiking, watching a movie, or playing a game together. It is also good to volunteer with them, such as cleaning a park or helping at an animal home.
Help with Chores.
You can also give the gift of helping out. For your parents, you can write down different chores on pieces of paper, like sweeping the kitchen, and then place them in a box. 5
