My eyes were glued (紧紧盯着) to the little screen whenever I walked down the street, had dinner with friends or lay in bed at night. The first thing I did when I woke up in the morning was to reach for my phone. Sliding into this habit was easy, but it was difficult to quit it.
Then the day came when I finally realized I had to make a change. Head down, eyes on my smartphone, I stepped into the road and a car shot past, nearly knocking me off my feet! At that very moment, I made up my mind to spend a whole week without my smartphone.
The first day was the hardest. I was used to checking the news and my friends' social media updates every few minutes. I kept reaching for my pocket for my smartphone that was not there. I felt empty and uneasy, as if I had missed something of value. I felt disconnected from everyone and everything.
It was scary. But then somehow I began to feel free. I finally picked up the classic novel I had always wanted to read and was soon lost in the beautiful language. I went out for a run and felt more alive than I had in days. Best of all, I began to appreciate the beauty in life with my own eyes, instead of through my smartphone camera.
My offline relationships benefited as well. I went for a long walk with an old friend. Our wide-ranging conversation went so much deeper than brief texts ever could. With eyes no longer fixed on our phones, we had a chance to really enjoy staying with each other. I also made sure to spend more time with my parents. We went to the opera, played badminton, and visited museums. We had never felt closer to each other.
By the end of the week, I almost did not want to turn my phone back on. Those seven days have given me a great appreciation for life beyond the screen. Life beyond smartphones is richer and more beautiful, and I am going to take advantage of it.

Baking such as making cookies and cakes has become a common cure for pressure or feeling down, and science may explain why.
A new study, published in the Journal of Positive Psychology, followed 658 people for about four weeks. By checking the detailed diaries kept by these people, Tamlin Conner, a psychologist and lead author of the study, found that people who worked on little creative projects like baking every day felt they were "flourishing" — a psychological term that describes the feeling of personal growth. It means that the good feeling that comes with pulling the freshly baked bread out of the oven (烤箱) could carry over into the next day, making the baker feel happier and more satisfied with their daily life.
"There is growing awareness in psychology research that creativity is related with emotional functioning," Conner said. "Psychologists have even started exploring baking as a tool to treat people with some forms of mental illness."
But how exactly does baking help? John Whaite, who was suffering from manic depression (躁郁症), shared his experience: "When I'm in the kitchen, measuring the amount of sugar, flour or butter I need or breaking the exact number of eggs, I am in control. That's really important because a key element of my condition is a feeling of no control."
For people like Whaite, baking can help their mood by providing small tasks to focus on in a manner similar to meditation (冥想). In order to put together a good meal, they have to stay in the moment the whole time, preparing the materials, adjusting the heat of the oven and tasting the food — all of which can be helpful techniques in treating depression and anxiety.
Baking may not be a be-all-end-all cure for mental illness, but anyone in need of lifted spirits should consider giving it a try.

As the world's population keeps expanding, the demand for food increases, and many farmers look to certain practices to increase their output so as to meet demand. This has led to a widespread use of chemical fertilisers (肥料) and pesticides. Even though these may increase yield and better protect crops, they can have harmful effects on people and the environment. That is why organic produce is becoming more and more popular — people want to be sure that the food they are taking in is not harmful to them and has no damaging effect on the environment.
Some farmers are shying away from the overreliance (过度依赖) on chemicals in farming and instead turning to an old farming method: integrated rice-duck farming, where farmers would allow ducks into rice fields to help in the farming process.
In a study published in 2013, the researchers studied the effects of integrated rice-duck farming and came to the conclusion that "compared with conventional rice cultivation (耕作), rice-duck cultivation shows great benefits to ecological (生态的) cost and economic income". Besides, they found that the ducks play various roles. They remove unwanted plants, eat harmful insects, and flatten the field to prepare it for planting the crop, and their droppings act as natural fertilizer. The ducks themselves are also provided with natural food, which increases the quality of their meat.
All in all, rice-duck cultivation seems like a winning method. It can boost the growth of rice, improve soil properties, and prevent plant diseases and harmful insects. Originating in China, this method is being used across Asia and is getting increasingly popular. The use of ducks in farming is also being applied in South Africa, France, and Iran.
37. What makes farmers turn to organic farming?
A. Strong desire for more profits.
B. The reality of increasing population.
C. Health and environmental awareness.
D. The increasing cost of chemical fertilizers.
【答案】C
・解析:根据第一段“they can have harmful effects on people and the environment. That is why organic produce is becoming more and more popular — people want to be sure that the food... is not harmful to them and has no damaging effect on the environment”(化学肥料和农药对人和环境有害,这就是有机农产品流行的原因——人们希望食物对自己无害、对环境无破坏)可知,农民转向有机农业的原因是“健康和环保意识”。A项“渴望更多利润”、B项“人口增长的现实”是“使用化学肥料”的原因;D项“化学肥料成本上升”未提及,故选C。
38. What does the underlined phrase "shying away from" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Avoiding.
B. Placing.
C. Increasing.
D. Ignoring.
【答案】A
・解析:根据后文“instead turning to an old farming method”(转而采用一种古老的耕作方法)可知,“shying away from”意为“避开、避免”,即农民“避免过度依赖化学物质”。B项“放置”、C项“增加”、D项“忽视”均与“转而采用其他方法”的逻辑不符,故选A。
39. What can ducks do in the farming process?
A. Protect farm from strong winds.
B. Speed up crop planting.
C. Stop the growth of grass.
D. Produce natural fertilizer.
40. What can we infer about rice-duck cultivation from the last paragraph?
A. It has a promising future.
B. Its popularity remains to be seen.
C. It may lose effects over time.
D. Its application needs in-depth study.
【答案】A
・解析:根据最后一段“this method is being used across Asia and is getting increasingly popular. The use of ducks in farming is also being applied in South Africa, France, and Iran”(该方法在亚洲广泛使用且日益流行,还被应用于南非、法国、伊朗)可知,稻鸭共作模式“前景广阔”。B项“流行度有待观察”与“日益流行、多国应用”矛盾;C项“随时间可能失效”、D项“应用需深入研究”未提及,故选A。

33. What did people do in the study?
A. Recorded their daily life.
B. Completed an interview.
C. Designed creative projects.

38. What does the underlined phrase "shying away from" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Avoiding.
B. Placing.
C. Increasing.
D. Ignoring.
