Richard Totten Button was born on July 18, 1929, in Englewood, New Jersey. He and his two older brothers were raised in wealth. Button began skating when he was five years old, using his brothers’ old skates.
When Button was 11 years old, he received his first pair of skates for Christmas. His first coach did not believe he had any ability and would never learn to skate. Button’s parents found him another coach, Swiss-born Lussi. For the next ten years, during his summers off from school,Button would train with Lussi in Lake Placid, New York, where the 1932 Winter Olympics had been held.
Button soon proved he had great natural ability. Combined with hard training and great coaching, he soon had success in competition. In 1943, he placed second at the Eastern States championships. Showing his competitive spirit, Button was unhappy with his second place win. Later that year, he won first title.
Button competed in the 1947 World Championships. He placed second, though some believed Button should have won. Button decided to change his skating style. He became more daring in his free skate.
To practise for the Olympics, Button competed in the 1948 European championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Not only did this competition assist Button in preparing for the Olympic games, but it allowed him to show off his newly developed style to the judges so that it might be more favorable later on. Button impressed the judges enough to win the title.
At the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland, Button won the gold medal with his free skate. Button cemented his status as a leading skater.
In the fall of 1948, Button entered Harvard University. He could have gone to Yale University, but Yale would not let him take time off to compete as a skater.
In 1952, Button graduated with his B. A. In the same year, Button repeated his gold medal victory at the Olympic Games in Oslo, Norway. Again, Button achieved something no skater had done before.

Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers advise “Barbara, be enthusiastic! Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience.” How right they were!
“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” Wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is the paste (粘合剂) that helps you hang on there when the going gets tough. It is the inner voice that whispers, “I can do it!” When others shout, “No, you can’t!” It took years and years for the early work of Barbara Mclintock, a geneticist who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted. Yet she didn’t stop working on her experiments. Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping.
We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder and it is this childlike wonder that gives enthusiastic people such youthful air, whatever their age. At 90, cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach. As the music flowed through his fingers, his stooped (驼背的) shoulders would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes. As author and poet Samuel Ulman once wrote, “Years wrinkle (起皱纹) the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.”
Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money or title or power. Patricia Mellratl, a retired director of the Missouri Repertory Theater in Kansas City, was once asked where she got her enthusiasm. She replied, “My father, long ago, told me, I never made a fortune until I stopped working for money.”
If we cannot do what we love as a full-time career, we can as a hobby. Elizabeth Layton Wellsville, Kan, was 68 before she began to draw. This activity ended periods of depression that troubled her for at least 30 years and the quality of her work led one critic to say, “I am tempted into a genius.”
We can’t afford to waste tears on “might-have-been”. We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after “what-can-be”. We need to live each moment whole-heartedly, with all our senses—finding pleasure in the sweet smell of a back-yard garden, the simple picture of a six-year-old, the beauty of a rainbow.
46. The author holds the view that _______.
A. enthusiasm is more important than experience
B. enthusiasm can give people more success and fame
C. enthusiastic people will never get old
D. enthusiasm can make you succeed and enjoy life
47. The author mentions cellist Pablo Casals in the third paragraph to show that _______.
A. enthusiasm can make people feel young
B. music can arouse people’s enthusiasm
C. enthusiasm can give people inspiration needed to succeed
D. enthusiasm can keep people healthy
48. According to the passage, what can we learn about Elizabeth Layton Wellsville?
A. She started drawing at the age of 38.
B. Drawing helped her get rid of depression.
C. Her drawings were not well-received.
D. She made a living by drawing.
49. How many examples are given in the passage to show the importance of enthusiasm?
A. Two B. Three C. Four D. Five
50. Which proverb may the writer agree with according to the last paragraph?
A. Good beginning makes a good ending.
B. Don’t cry over the spoiled milk.
C. Love me, love my dog.
D. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
Do you jump out of bed early, wide awake and ready to start your day? If so, you would be considered an “early bird”. Perhaps, though, you fear the sound of your alarm clock each morning and have little energy until the afternoon. If that is the case, you are probably a “night owl”. Most of us fall into one of these two categories but what makes us this way? And is one better than the other? Different people hold different opinions.
Traditionally, early risers have been praised as hard-working and productive. On the other hand, those who prefer to sleep in and get up late are considered lazy and nonproductive. This stereotype dates back to early times when most people farmed, worked and slept according to the sun. But even in the 21st century, most people still believe the early bird catches the worm. This famous expression supports the idea that early risers have an advantage over late risers. Yet, some scientists now believe that “night owls” can actually focus longer and produce more than early risers. Research has found that early bird doesn't always get the worm. In a Belgian study, both “morning people” and “evening people” were observed during their normal asleep and awake routines.
After 10 hours of being awake, the “evening people” became more active and energetic. However, the “morning people” became sleepy and less focused. Researchers believe the reason for this difference is that night owls receive a last-minute increase of energy from their brains. This added energy allows night owls to stay sharp and productive for longer periods of time, usually until bedtime. What determines our body's preference?
Environment, lifestyle, activities and childhood routines are all factors, yet, genes may play the biggest role. In 2007, scientists reported discovering something they called the “after-hour” gene. People with this gene had a natural ability to stay active and late into the night. It is possible to change your sleeping patterns but if you are happy rising early or staying up late, you're probably doing what works best for your own personal body clock.
51. What does the underlined phrase refer to? (No more than 2 words)
52. Why do most people still value the early risers in the 21st century? ( No more than 10 words)
53. What kind of people are more likely to get absent-minded during the day? (No more than 2 words)
54. Why are some people able to stay active late into the night according to the scientists? (No more than 15 words)
55. Do you think it necessary to change our sleeping patterns? Why? (No more than 25 words)

根据第一段中“Do you jump out of bed early, wide awake and ready to start your day? If so, you would be considered an “early bird”. Perhaps, though, you fear the sound of your alarm clock each morning and have little energy until the afternoon. Late risers.
根据第二段中“Traditionally, early risers have been praised as hard-working and productive. On the other hand, those who prefer to sleep in and get up late are considered lazy and nonproductive. This stereotype dates back to early times when most people farmed, worked and slept according to the sun. But even in the 21st century, most people still believe the early bird catches the worm. (传统上,早起的人被认为是勤奋和多产的人。另一方面,那些喜欢晚睡晚起的人会被认为懒惰且效率低下。这种刻板印象可以追溯到早期,那时大多数人根据太阳耕种、工作和睡觉。但是即使在21世纪,大多数人仍然相信早起的鸟儿有虫吃)”可知,21世纪的人仍然重视早起,因为他们相信早起的人是勤奋的,多产的。故答案为Because they believe that early risers are hard-working and productive.
根据第三段中“However, the “morning people” became sleepy and less focused. (然而,“早起的人”会变得昏昏欲睡,注意力不那么集中)”可知,早起的人白天可能会走神。故答案为Early risers.
根据最后一段中“In 2007, scientists reported discovering something they called the “after-hour” gene. People with this gene had a natural ability to stay active and late into the night. (2007年,科学家报告发现了一种他们称之为“下班后”基因的东西。拥有这种基因的人有一种天生的能力,能够保持活跃,直到深夜)”可知,一些人在很晚也能够保持积极主要是因为他们有一种叫做“下班后”基因的东西。故答案为Because they have something called the “after-hour” gene.
Yes, I want to be an early riser. Because I have much work to do during the day.
