As each book is put into the bag, it is checked by the scanner. If any book is missing, a message will be shown on the computer screen to remind you. Weather Sweets Can you eat weather? A university makes that happen. It uses a 3D printer to create sweets based on the weather information of a certain day. The shapes of the sweets are affected by wind speed. The colors of the sweets are decided by temperature. The sweets act as a weather record of the day when they are made. Sunrise Bed It’s hard for you to get up in the morning, isn’t it? To help you get up, a company has created a “tool” —a sunrise bed. It wakes you up gently as a sunrise does. Lights built into the bed turn on and start to get brighter and brighter. It is the end of the semester and your teacher gives you your report card. You look at it and your heart stops because you realize that your parents are going to be very angry. This is the classic case of a bad report card! There is nothing you can do to change the past. So, what do you do now? A disappointing report card is something that almost all students will experience at least once in their lives. Grades are how most schools evaluate students and they are pretty important. The problem is that we do not always get good grades we (or our parents) want. After a bad report card, it is important to figure out what to do next. The first thing to do is to talk to your teacher. Find out how your grades were calculated. Was the problem a bad test, lack of participation in class, or a failure to complete homework? Next, if the problem is something you can solve on your own (such as not doing your homework), make a promise to change your behaviour! However, if you have been studying hard and still got a bad grade, you probably need some extra help with your classes. Talk to your teacher and explain your situation. He or she will tell you where you can receive the extra help you need. Then, make a detailed plan of how you will improve your grades. Write down the plan and have it ready when you talk to your parents. That’s a good way to make your parents less angry. While all parents want their children to get good grades, most understand that not every report card will be perfect. The important thing is that you show your parents you have a plan to improve your grades for next time. Always remember, many of the world’s most successful people failed many times before they became successful. They learned from their failures, and you should too! 1.What is the problem with the grades? A.Most schools evaluate students by using grades. B.We don’t always get good grades we want. C.Grades are sometimes incorrect. D.It’s important to get good grades. 2.Which of the following is not a cause of a bad report card? A.There was something wrong with the test itself. B.You didn’t take part in enough group work in class. C.You studied hard enough for the test. D.You failed to finish your homework. 3.________ is a good way to make your parents less angry. A.Telling your parents the test was too difficult for you B.Understanding all parents want their children to get good grades C.Explaining why you couldn’t complete your homework on time D.Showing your parents you have a detailed plan to improve your grades 4.The underlined words “your situation” in the text probably means “________”. A.You have been studying hard, but you still got bad grades. B.You have made a promise to change some bad behaviour. C.You had no idea about how your grades were calculated. D.You have had a detailed plan to improve your grades. 5.Why does the writer mention “successful people” in paragraph 4? A.to compare successful people with unsuccessful people B.to describe whether they had good grades or bad grades C.to encourage students to become successful like those people D.to explain that even successful people fail from time to time 6.The text above is written to________. A.encourage students to get good grades B.find excuses for bad grades C.make parents less angry D.share ways to deal with bad report cards 【答案】1.B 2.C 3.D 4.A 5.D 6.D 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要针对不理想的成绩单问题,提供了从分析原因到制定改进计划的一系列实用建议,旨在帮助学生积极应对挫折并从失败中成长。 1.细节理解题。根据第二段中“The problem is that we do not always get good grades we (or our parents) want.”可知,问题是我们并不总是能得到我们(或我们的父母)想要的好成绩。故选B。 2.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Find out how your grades were calculated. Was the problem a bad test, lack of participation in class, or a failure to complete homework?…However, if you have been studying hard and still got a bad grade, you probably need some extra help with your classes.”可知,原文提到原因包括:考试不好、课堂参与不足、未完成作业;而选项C“你学习足够努力”与原文“即使努力学习仍得低分”矛盾。故选C。 3.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Write down the plan and have it ready when you talk to your parents. That’s a good way to make your parents less angry.”可知,写下这个计划,并在你向父母提起时准备好,这是让父母不那么生气的一个好方法。故选D。 4.词句猜测题。根据前文“However, if you have been studying hard and still got a bad grade, you probably need some extra help with your classes.”和“Talk to your teacher and explain your situation.”可知,此处指“努力学习但仍得低分”的情况。故选A。 5.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Always remember, many of the world’s most successful people failed many times before they became successful. They learned from their failures, and you should too!” D。 To: margaret87 @ hotmail.com Cc: Subject: “Museums of the World” Travel Plan “Museums of the World” Travel Plan Here’s the travel plan for some unusual museums on our “Museums of the World” tour. I’ll send you our plan of the whole journey next week. The Museum of Bad Art shows what it describes as “art too bad to be ignored (忽略)”. The museum hopes to bring the worst of art to the widest possible audience. As part of the visit, we’ll see some truly terrible works of art. The Washington Banana Museum has 4,000 objects inside. Later in the year, the museum curator will select 10 people who gave lots of money to the museum to attend a party. If you’re one of them, you’ll be invited to stay in his guest house. The Museu de Carrosses Funebres is a museum of funerals (葬礼). It takes a look at how local people have been transported to their funerals since the 19th century. During the tour, we’ll get a good understanding of how the local people viewed death. Note: For more information about these museums, please check our website: www.startravel.com. Mobile phones are frequently blamed (归咎) for a number of things, from thumb injuries and headaches to house fires. One theory (学说) even blames mobile phones for the disappearance of bees! The theory is that the bees’ navigation (导航) systems are damaged by the radiation (辐射) that is given off by mobile phones. Bees have a built-in system a bit like GPS and this helps them find their way back to their hive (蜂巢). But recently, thousands of bees have failed to find their way home. It is believed they are dying far from their hives. The problem was first noticed by beekeepers in America and is a lot more complicated than it at first seems. The important thing about bees is that most of the crops in many countries of the world continue to grow. Most crops are pollinated (投粉) by them. Without bees, the crops can’t continue to grow. Many beekeepers in America and Europe have reported losing between 50 and 70 percent of their bees. Jim Piper, a London beekeeper, was recently asked how the problem was affecting (影响) him. “My business has been ruined by this,” he explained. “Twenty-nine of my forty hives are now empty.” Nobody has proved that this theory is true but it’s a fact that bees are disappearing in very large numbers. And we can’t manage without them. Einstein said that if all the bees disappeared, man would only live for four more years. The situation needs to be evaluated by the world’s best scientists. If the mobile phone theory is correct, we need to do something about it immediately — before it’s too late. 1.Why do some people think mobile phones are harmful to bees? A.Bees can’t pollinate crops as a result of radiation. B.Bees’ navigation system is damaged by radiation. C.Bees’ hives are damaged by radiation and bees lose their homes. D.Strong radiation from mobile phones can kill bees immediately. 2.Who were the first people to notice the problem? A.British scientists. B.American beekeepers. C.A London business owner. D.European farmers. 3.Which of the following best summarizes (归纳) the main idea of the third paragraph? A.Bees are losing their way. B.A strange idea. C.It’s time to act. D.No bees—no food. 4.Which of the following is a fact? A.Mobile phones are affecting bees’ navigation system. B.Crops have stopped growing in some countries. C.A large number of bees are disappearing. D.Mobile phones have caused many house fires. 5.The underlined word “ruin” in the third paragraph probably means ________. As a technology lover, I had the exciting chance to attend the launch events for both the new Apple iPhone 17 and the Huawei Mate XTs this year. After seeing them up close, I am here to share my thoughts and help you understand what makes these two phones special. It’s amazing how different they are, each with unique strengths. This comparison will focus on their design, key features, and who might benefit most from using them. Let’s dive into the details to see which one could be your next perfect device. The Apple iPhone 17 feels like a big step forward in artificial intelligence. Its new “A18 Mind” chip is designed to learn from your behavior. For instance, if it notices you always go for a run after work, it might prepare your favorite workout playlist and check the weather for you. This smart technology also manages the phone’s battery in a very smart way making it last much longer under normal use. Another key improvement is the support for 6G networks, which allows you to download large files almost instantly. The phone’s design is also sleeker, with a brighter screen that is easier to read outdoors. However, all these amazing features come with a very high price, which might be a problem for some students and young people. Additionally, while the AI is helpful, it requires sharing more personal data, which some users may worry about.   On the other hand, the Huawei Mate XTs offers a completely different experience with its revolutionary foldable screen. When unfolded, it provides a large, beautiful display that is perfect for reading digital books, watching movies, or even working on documents side-by-side. The screen is so smooth that you can hardly see the fold in the middle. Huawei also improved the camera system significantly. It performs exceptionally well in low-light conditions, capturing bright and clear photos at night or indoors. The battery life is also impressive, lasting a full day even with heavy use. While its price is still high, it is generally more affordable than the new iPhone, offering great value for a device with such a large, high-quality screen. Some users might find the folded phone a bit thick, but most agree the large screen is worth it. So, what is the conclusion? Your choice really depends on your lifestyle and what you need from a phone. The iPhone 17 acts like a thoughtful, intelligent assistant that tries to make your daily life easier. In contrast, the Huawei Mate XTs serves as a powerful and versatile (多功能的) mini-tablet that is great for entertainment and work. Both are excellent examples of modern technology moving in exciting, though different, directions. If you love Al and speed, choose the iPhone. If you prefer a big screen for fun and work, the Huawei is better. No matter which you pick, both phones show how far technology has come. 1.What is the writer’s main purpose of writing this passage? A.To tell a personal experience of meeting with two phones. B.To show the common features of the two phones. C.To introduce two new phones for user’s preference. D.To suggest a lifestyle with or without a modern phone. 2.One key advantage of the iPhone 17 is ________. A.its battery that goes long B.a larger screen for people to enjoy C.the reasonable price even for students D.camera pictures in good quality 3.The word “revolutionary” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________. A.very old-fashioned but traditional B.completely new and changing C.somewhat supportive and beautiful D.much more convenient than before 4.Paragraph 3 probably highlights ________ of the Huawei Mate XTs. A.the screen B.the camera C.the price D.the packaging 5.What does a person mainly consider when choosing between the two new phones? A.The all-rounded functions of each. B.The working system of entertainment. C.The expectations from each for his life. D.The speed of working efficiency. 6.Where can we probably find this passage? A.In a technology company report. B.In a textbook of a science course. C.On a personal tech blog website. Maybe it’s a bit late to start thinking about this, but that’s how I am. I think I’ll do well in my exams, so maybe I’ll go to university or college to get more qualifications (证书)—but I’ve been asking myself if it’s better to just find a job and start a career (职业生涯). On the other hand, if I do go on to study further, should I do it right away or perhaps take a year off—a “gap year”? Helpful advice and ideas, please! Thanks. Amy posted 28 minutes ago Hi, John. I’m doing a gap year right now. I saved some money and went to Thailand, but after two months of “holiday”, I got bored and the money was running out. Then I found a volunteer medical organization that helps people in poor areas of the country and they let me join as a driver. Now I’m working, trying to learn Thai (I spend up to an hour a day practising with friends) and learning a lot about myself. I’ve made a decision, too—when I go home, I’m going to study medicine, to be a doctor or a nurse. So my advice? Do a gap year, but don’t just travel around—do some volunteer work somewhere. For me, it’s been life-changing. Pauline posted 1 hour ago Hi there! Here’s my advice. Do what feels right for you now, but keep an open mind and be prepared to change. Some of my friends set off to travel after school, but I didn’t have the courage. I just went to university. It was OK and I was having a good time. Then one day, an old friend from school phoned me and said he was going to start an online company and asked me to join him. I considered for a long time. Then I gave up the university course and went to work with him. It was the best thing I had ever done. I didn’t plan to leave university, but I took the chance to try something different, and I don’t regret it. 1.What is the big question John is thinking about? A.What should I do next? C.Making a decision to study medicine. D.Taking on a meaningful gap year. 5.What does Pauline think is important when making decisions after leaving school? A.Being open to change. B.Earning money first. C.Following a strict plan. D.Traveling instead of studying. 6.Which advice would John probably receive from both Amy and Pauline? A.Always stick to your first plan. B.Learning a new language is key. C.Trying new things can be useful. It takes hard work, practice, and patience. To run a marathon, you have to run 26.2 miles on foot! 26.2 miles is the same as running the length of a football field more than 460 times. It takes most people four or five hours to finish. In 2013, the world’s fastest marathon runner finished the race in 2:03:23. Imagine running for over two hours without a break! By the age of 30, Lea Tambellini had run more than five marathons and had no plans to stop. She had always been an athlete. When she was 14 in high school, she swam on her school’s swim team and began to train for the relay race. Her mum and dad ran marathons, and when she was 22, they helped her train for her first marathon. Lea’s first marathon took place in Ohio, which was called “The Flying Pig”. “I was very nervous,” she said, “but I had my mum there, so that helped.” Running the race was hard, but the hardest part was when she ran past a cookie factory and smelled cookies at mile 18. “I just wanted to be done,” she said. “I was spent, but my mum kept me going. It was already her 15th marathon.” The word “marathon” comes from a Greek legend. In the legend, a brave soldier ran all the way from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens, Greece to tell everyone the Greeks had won the battle against the Persians (波斯人). It is said that he ran the entire way without stopping—a distance equal to a modern marathon. Today, thousands of people run marathons every year. Runners train for months to get ready. To prepare for one of the marathons, Lea ran four to five times every week. On weekdays, she completed shorter runs, five or six miles at most. But at weekends she ran long distances—13 miles, 15 miles, and 20 miles! “I don’t mind training because I get excited about working toward something. And I love running with a group of friends and working toward the goal together. But it does take a lot of time.” Running a marathon is a great achievement. “It’s a great feeling of accomplishment and nothing feels as wonderful as reaching my goal when I cross the finish line,” Lea explained. “I can’t wait for the next one!” 1.It usually takes most people ________ hours to finish a marathon. A.two or three B.two C.four or five D. over five 2.Lea felt ________ when she ran her first marathon “The Flying Pig”. A.bored B.nervous C.excited D.tired 3.The underlined word “spent” most likely means _________. B.Lea’s parents had never run a marathon before her first race. C.The name “marathon” comes from a story about a Roman soldier. D.Lea’s weekend training runs were longer than her weekday runs. 5.From Lea’s words about training, we can infer that _________. A.she finds training boring and lonely B.she values teamwork and shared goals C.she thinks training takes too much time D.she prefers training alone to running with others 6.The main purpose of this passage is to _________. A.explain the history of marathon running B.describe how to train for a marathon properly C.tell about Lea’s marathon experiences and the meaning of marathons D.convince readers to participate in marathon races 【答案】1.C 2.B 3.B 4.D 5.B 6.C 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了马拉松运动员Lea Tambellini的经历和马拉松的历史及意义。 1.细节理解题。根据“It takes most people four or five hours to finish.”可知,完成马拉松通常需要四到五小时。故选C。 2.细节理解题。根据“‘I was very nervous,’ she said, ‘but I had my mum there, so that helped.’”可知,Lea在第一次跑马拉松时感到紧张。故选B。 3.词句猜测题。根据“I was spent, but my mum kept me going”可知,Lea在比赛中后段闻到饼干香味只觉得不想跑了,但妈妈让Lea继续跑,“spent”在此处应意为“疲惫不堪”。故选B。 4.细节理解题。根据“On weekdays, she completed shorter runs, five or six miles at most. Of course, your computer can’t “shout” back. But AI researchers have been working on computers that can argue and perhaps even win debates with humans. IBM scientists recently published a paper in Nature about their new AI system—Project Debater. It can debate with people in front of a live audience. After listening to arguments from its opponent, the system can search around 400 million online articles in less than five minutes. And then it looks for ideas that can support its own argument. Testing on the system began in 2019. When it debated with Harish Natarajan, a professional debater who holds the world record for the most debate competition victories. The topic was about subsidizing preschool (资助幼儿园) and Project Debater argued to support this idea. Although Project Debater lost the debate in the end, the audience said it performed very well. Interestingly, 58 percent of the audience said that Project Debater increased their knowledge about the topic—only 20 percent said the same about Natarajan. According to Scientific American, results show that the system is able to form logical statements (有逻辑的陈述). However, ________. Their goal is to help humans make better decisions, according to Ranit Aharanoy, manager of the Project Debater team. “It can debate both sides, so it can very quickly help you understand both sides of the problem, thus you can have a wider view of the problem and make a more thoughtful decision.” Aharanoy said. Let’s wait and see how the Project Debater will develop in the near future. 1.According to paragraph 2, which one below is not the way of Project Debater working? Fortune cookies are small, hard golden cookies. But there’s one thing that makes them special: They’re folded (折) into a butterfly shape to create a pocket holding a “fortune”, a short message about your future. The finger-sized fortunes contain just about everything from sayings to advice. Often, they are written in both English and Chinese, and may have happy faces on them. The history of when and by whom fortune cookies are first made is a bit murky. Most people believe that they were created by a Japanese man named Makoto Hagiwara in 1914. However, many still hold the idea that they were invented by a man named David Jung, who owned a noodle company. He put passages and handed them out to jobless men near his bakery in 1918. So how did they put the fortunes inside the cookies? In fact, the process is very simple. The cookies are baked as flat circles. After the cookies are taken out of the oven, pieces of paper are folded and then put inside while the cookies are still warm and soft. As the cookies cool, they harden into shape (硬化成形). In 1974, the way of making fortune cookies changed forever. Edward Louie, the owner of a fortune cookie company, invented a machine that could place the fortune and fold the cookie. In 1980, Yong Lee created a new type of cookie machine and it could make cookies automatically (自动). It’s called the Fortune III. Now fortune cookie machines like the Kitamura FCM-8006W can make up to 8,000 cookies in an hour! In some countries, fortune cookies have been a popular culture. People create their own fortune cookies to send funny messages to friends and family-and sometimes to even propose marriage (求婚)! They are also used in some business activities for advertisements. 1.________ makes fortune cookies special on the meal table. Tom, age 11, is growing out his hair for the third time to help other kids, though some kids are mean to him. “When I was five, my friend gave away hair and I thought it would be a good idea. Kids in my school and other places often made fun of me, saying I looked like a girl. Even grown-ups did. But I stuck it out. I knew why I was doing it. My hair would help provide free hairpieces to children in need. It felt good to make others happy. I learned to be strong and to stand up for my beliefs.” While boarding in the ocean on a family vacation, David, 18, noticed a mother and child struggling in deep water. The trained lifeguard jumped into action. “I saw the mom and child being pulled underwater by the strong tide (潮). I shouted, ‘Are you all right?’ The woman said no, so I swam over with my board. I was tired, but I had little time to think about it. I gave her my board and swam to the boy, who’d gone under. Waves crashed over us as we headed to shore. I don’t see myself as a hero, just lucky to be there. It reminded me how precious and unpredictable life is.” Lily, age nine, helped her family escape from a fire. “I woke up early and smelled smoke. I woke up my mom, and she shouted for everyone to get out of the house. Minutes later, the roofs collapsed! An electrical fire had started in the top of the house, and smoke alarms hadn’t gone off because the fire was above them. “I paid attention when the firefighters came to talk with us in Grade 3. A.encourage students to get good grades B.find excuses for bad grades C.make parents less angry D.share ways to deal with bad report cards To: margaret87 @ hotmail.com Cc: Subject: “Museums of the World” Travel Plan “Museums of the World” Travel Plan Here’s the travel plan for some unusual museums on our “Museums of the World” tour. They are all connected to the history of bananas. We’ll have a guided tour around the museum. We’ll learn all kinds of interesting facts. For example, bananas were first introduced to the USA in 1878 in the same exhibition as Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone. The banana is now the best-selling fruit in the USA. Now onto Europe — The Hair Museum is located in a huge cave in a European country. It has 16,000 samples (样本) of people’s hair inside. You’ll have a chance to add your own hair to the collection. A.improve B.confuse C.harm D.burn 6.What can be the best title of this passage? A.Bees dying for a phone call. B.The danger of using mobile phones. C.How to better protect bees? D.A new challenge of modern technology. Hello, readers! D.In a product advertisement in a magazine. Set in famous museums, these books are full of action and secrets. J. R. B.How can I finish school? C.When should I start to work? D.Which university should I go to? 2.How does John feel when he thinks about the big question? A.Excited. B.Nervous. C.Unsure. D.Unhappy. 3.Which part of Amy’s gap year experience influenced her most? A.Running out of money during the trip. B.Joining a volunteer organization. C.Practicing Thai with her friends. D.Travelling in Thailand for two months. 4.In Amy’s words, what does the underlined word “it” refer to? A.Travelling around Thailand for a year. B.Saving money before the gap year. D.Avoiding taking risks is better. Choose the best answer(阅读短文,选择最恰当的答案) Running a marathon is not easy. If you’ve ever been to a Chinese restaurant, you’ve most likely received a fortune cookies at the end of your meal. My hair would help provide free hairpieces to children in need. It felt good to make others happy. I learned to be strong and to stand up for my beliefs.” While boarding in the ocean on a family vacation, David, 18, noticed a mother and child struggling in deep water.
