On a cold Colorado morning, Tera and her pet dog, Odin, waited inside the Sister Mary Alice Murphy Center for Hope. They were here to see veterinarian (兽医) Dr. Jon Geller, who provides free veterinary care through the Street Dog Coalition, a nonprofit serving pets of homeless individuals. In a make shift exam room, Geller checked Odin’s ears, heart, teeth and belly. The 11-month-old puppy received vaccinations for rabies(狂犬病), parvovirus and distemper, along with a deworming pill.
Tera and her family, including Odin, recently moved from Texas and have been staying at a homeless shelter. Odin was kicked out for supposedly being aggressive, but Tera said this was not true and Geller didn't see any proof of it. Consequently, Odin had to sleep in their car in near-zero temperatures.
To Tera, Odin is family — a companion and protector. She relies on him for mobility due to severe back pain, and he wakes her up at night when she occasionally stops breathing.“Without him, I fear I could not go on living,” Tera says.
Geller estimates about 10% of Fort Collins’ 330-plus homeless population have pets — roughly 33 animals locally, compared to tens of thousands nationwide. While public opinion on helping the homeless is: divided, Geller notes broad support for their pets, which offer emotional support, protection and purpose. “Pets give them a reason to live,” he explains.
Despite criticism about homeless individuals caring for animals, Geller emphasizes their sacrifices: Many prioritize feeding their pets over themselves and forfeit access to shelters and transportation. The most common breeds of street dogs are pit bulls and Chihuahuas. Pit bulls are often seen as outcasts, while Chihuahuas are known for being very loyal.
The Street Dog Coalition, initially self-funded, now holds nonprofit status and relies on volunteers, including Colorado State University vet students, and donations. Services focus on “street medicine” — preventive care like vaccines and parasite treatment. The organization has expanded to six states, with plans to reach more high-need cities.
24. Why did Geller meet with Tera?
A. To provide veterinary care for her dog.
B. To teach her to care for homeless dogs.
C. To treat homeless individuals for rabies.

根据第一段“On a cold Colorado morning, Tera and her pet dog, Odin, waited inside the Sister Mary Alice Murphy Center for Hope. They were here to see veterinarian (兽医) Dr. Jon Geller, who provides free veterinary care through the Street Dog Coalition, a nonprofit serving pets of homeless individuals. In a make shift exam room, Geller checked Odin's ears, heart, teeth and belly. The 11-month-old puppy received vaccinations for rabies(狂犬病), parvovirus and distemper, along with a deworming pill.(在科罗拉多州一个寒冷的早晨,特拉和她的宠物狗奥丁在玛丽·爱丽丝·墨菲修女希望中心等着。他们来这里是为了看兽医乔恩·盖勒医生,他通过流浪狗联盟(一个为无家可归者提供宠物服务的非营利组织)提供免费的兽医服务。在临时检查室里,盖勒检查了奥丁的耳朵、心脏、牙齿和腹部。这只11个月大的小狗接种了狂犬病、细小病毒和犬瘟热疫苗,并服用了驱虫药。)”可知,盖勒见面目的是为特拉的狗提供免费兽医护理。故选A项。
根据第三段“To Tera, Odin is family — a companion and protector. She relies on him for mobility due to severe back pain, and he wakes her up at night when she occasionally stops breathing.“Without him, I fear I could not go on living,” Tera says.(对特拉来说,奥丁是家人,是伴侣和保护者。由于严重的背部疼痛,她依靠他来行动,晚上她偶尔会停止呼吸,他会把她吵醒。“没有他,我恐怕活不下去了,”特拉说。)”可知,特拉把奥丁视为家人、保护者和生命支撑,体现深深感激。故选D项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“While public opinion on helping the homeless is: divided, Geller notes broad support for their pets, which offer emotional support, protection and purpose. “Pets give them a reason to live,” he explains.(尽管公众对帮助无家可归者的意见存在分歧,但盖勒指出,人们普遍支持他们的宠物,因为宠物能提供情感支持、保护和目标。“宠物给了他们活下去的理由,”他解释说。)”和第五段“Despite criticism about homeless individuals caring for animals, Geller emphasizes their sacrifices: Many prioritize feeding their pets over themselves and forfeit access to shelters and transportation.(尽管有人批评无家可归的人照顾动物,但盖勒强调了他们的牺牲:许多人优先考虑喂养宠物,而不是自己,并forfeit了获得住所和交通工具的机会。)” 故选A项。
根据上文的内容“Geller emphasizes their sacrifices: Many prioritize feeding their pets over themselves(盖勒强调了他们的牺牲:许多人优先考虑喂养宠物而不是自己)”可知,无家可归者为照顾宠物而牺牲自身利益,所以,这些无家可归者肯定是“失去”下文提到的资源“access to shelters and transportation”。
C
The process of poetry interpretation can be unapproachable for many readers, but it is not necessarily as difficult as it may seem. Basic interpretation should be used to understand the poem itself at a surface level, before proceeding to any possible deeper meaning. This can often begin with a simple and straightforward reading of the poem from beginning to end, including the title. During this reading, no poetry interpretation should occur; the poem should simply be read to have a sense of the overall tone, narrative and structure.
Once this is established, the reader should begin some poetry interpretation during a second reading. As the reader studies the poem a second time, he or she should pay attention to the title and reflect on what it might mean now that the reader has read the entire poem once. The title might set the tone for the poem itself, or might act as a secondary structure meant to accompany the poem. It is also possible that the title provides the overall purpose or meaning of the poem itself. If the poem is untitled, then the reader should consider why the poet did not give it a title and how that lack of title might reflect on the larger poetry interpretation.
This poetry interpretation can then continue throughout the secondary reading as the reader pays greater attention to figurative (比喻的) language found in the poem. If the poet draws comparisons between two things, then the reader should consider how those two things relate and what the comparison reveals about each of them. A poem in which a rose is compared to a woman may have a fairly straightforward interpretation: Both the rose and the woman are considered beautiful by the author.
Deeper meaning, however, may arise from further poetry interpretation as the reader considers other aspects of a rose. A rose is accompanied by painful thorns, for example, or that a rose is cut and displayed to look pretty, but then quickly withers and dies. These meanings can expand upon the initial comparison, depending on the other ideas presented in the poem.
28. What should readers do during the initial reading of a poem?
A. Read it roughly. B. Understand it thoroughly.
C. Write its interpretation. D. Know its deeper meanings.
29. Which of the following is the key to reading the poem a second time?
A. Knowing the background. B. Analyzing the structure.
C. Studying the title. D. Memorizing the words.
30. Why is the rose mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To introduce the author’s writing methods. B. To show the use of figurative language.
C. To explain the beauty of roses and women. D. To display the benefit of making comparisons.
31. What may be the best title for the text?
A. The Figurative Language in Poems B. The Significance of a Poem’s Title
C. The Ways to Appreciate Classical Poems D. The Best Tips for Poetry Interpretation
A 29. C 30. B 31. D

根据第一段“The process of poetry interpretation can be unapproachable for many readers, but it is not necessarily as difficult as it may seem. Basic interpretation should be used to understand the poem itself at a surface level, before proceeding to any possible deeper meaning. This can often begin with a simple and straightforward reading of the poem from beginning to end, including the title. During this reading, no poetry interpretation should occur; the poem should simply be read to have a sense of the overall tone, narrative and structure.(诗歌解读的过程对于许多读者来说可能难以理解,但其实并不一定像看起来那么困难。在深入理解诗歌之前,应先采用基本的解读方法,从表面层面理解诗歌本身。之后再探讨可能存在的更深层次的含义。通常可以从头到尾简单直接地阅读整首诗,包括标题开始。在阅读过程中,不应进行诗歌解读;只需通读诗歌,以感受整体的基调、叙述和结构即可)”可知,在初次阅读诗歌时,读者不应进行深入解读,只要通读全诗以感知其整体基调、叙事和结构。故选A。
根据第二段“As the reader studies the poem a second time, he or she should pay attention to the title and reflect on what it might mean now that the reader has read the entire poem once.(当读者再次研读这首诗时,他或她应当留意标题,并思考一下既然已经完整地读过这首诗一次,标题可能蕴含着怎样的含义)”可知,再次研读这首诗时,读者要重点关注标题并思考其含义。
根据第三段“This poetry interpretation can then continue throughout the secondary reading as the reader pays greater attention to figurative (比喻的) language found in the poem. If the poet draws comparisons between two things, then the reader should consider how those two things relate and what the comparison reveals about each of them. A poem in which a rose is compared to a woman may have a fairly straightforward interpretation: Both the rose and the woman are considered beautiful by the author.(这种诗歌解读随后可以在后续阅读过程中继续进行,此时读者会更加关注诗中所运用的比喻性语言。如果诗人将两件事物进行比较,那么读者就应该思考这两件事物之间的关系以及这种比较所揭示出的关于它们各自的特点的信息。例如,如果一首诗将玫瑰比作女人,那么这首诗的解读可能会比较直接:作者认为玫瑰和女人都是美丽的)”可知,提及玫瑰的目的是展示比喻语言的运用。故选B。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“The process of poetry interpretation can be unapproachable for many readers, but it is not necessarily as difficult as it may seem.(诗歌解读的过程对于许多读者来说可能难以理解,但其实并不一定像看起来那么困难)”以及全文围绕如何解读诗歌展开,清晰地介绍了从初步感知到深入分析的两个阅读步骤。

For farmers, quickly identifying crop diseases is crucial to safeguarding their own and neighboring farms, yet it often poses a significant challenge. Now, a simple portable device is helping change this by enabling early virus detection directly in the field.
In Tanzania, for instance, cassava (木薯) crops face threats from several viruses. Timely identification is essential to prevent widespread damage. However, when farmers attempt to diagnose issues independently, the process can be slow and inaccurate. Without knowing the specific pathogen (病原体), they cannot take effective action.
Thanks to a device developed by a British technology firm, this barrier is being overcome. The tool allows for the extraction (提取) of DNA from plant samples. By analyzing the genetic material, it helps pinpoint the exact viruses affecting crops, enabling farmers to switch to more resistant varieties.
Laura Boykin, a researcher from the University of Western Australia and part of the Cassava Virus Action Project, brought the device to a Tanzanian farm owned by Asha Mohamed. “We are collecting leaf samples from infected plants to conduct DNA extraction and sequencing right here in the field,” Boykin explained. The test not only identified multiple viruses in nearby cassava fields but also confirmed that disease-resistant plants showed minimal viral presence.
“What used to take six months to a year now only takes a few hours. This technology delivers real-time results directly to farmers,” Boykin emphasized. Following the diagnosis, Mohamed received two types of seeds resistant to the detected viruses.
In a parallel case in Kenya, the application of this diagnostic technology was critical for Naomi Mumo, whose pawpaw (木瓜) plantation was destroyed by an unidentified infection. The device provided a rapid and definitive diagnosis, resolving a previously difficult problem. Mumo expressed profound relief at the swift identification of the pathogen that had threatened her livelihood.
Nine months after introducing the improved seeds, Boykin and her team revisited Mohamed’s farm. The results were remarkable; The new plants were thriving, and the yield had jumped from zero to 35 tons per hectare.
32. What can the device help farmers do?
A. Extract DNA from seeds.
B. Develop new crop species.
C. Reduce the viruses in crops.
D. Identify crop diseases rapidly.
33. What can we know about Boykin’s test in Mohamed’s farm?
A. It didn’t progress smoothly.
B. It achieved satisfactory results.
C. It needed more different samples.
D. It took six months to complete it.
34. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 6?
A. Describe a problem. B. Explain the principle.
C. Give another example. D. Introduce a discovery.
35. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To advertise the new plants.
B. To prove the device’s effect.
C. To detail the planting process.
D. To promote the improved seeds.

Expressions About Roots
The roots of most plants grow below the ground. There, they have some very important jobs._____36_____ They also take in water and minerals to feed the plant. And in many plants, the roots store food and nutrients.
So, roots are the foundation of the plant: the supporting structures. And that gives us our first expression: to put roots down. When you put roots down, you make a place your home by creating connections. You get a job and maybe buy a house. You also make friends and join activities. All these things connect you to a place. Each connection makes it harder for you to leave.____37____
If you want to move a plant, you must be careful not to disturb the roots too much. If you do, you could kill the plant. And that brings us to another way we use the word “root”.______38______ For example, I could say that my love of mystery stories is rooted in my childhood full of Agatha Christie books.
_____39_____ So, people could say that a small town’s problems are rooted in a lack of good jobs. That suggests our next expression: get to the root of the problem. When you get to the root of the problem, you get to the cause of it. You can also strike at the root of a problem if you are looking for a way to solve it.
Sometimes we use the word “dig” to go with some root expressions. As people say, roots are underground._____40_____ So, we could say,“A lack of jobs is just one issue. To get to the root of the city’s larger problem, we must dig deeper.”
A. You must dig to reach them.
B. We should know about its roots.
C. The trees always have many roots.
D. Similarly, problems have roots too.
E. The roots secure the plant in the ground.
F. It can also be the start or cause of something.
G. Just like the roots of a plant, they ground you.
E 37. G 38. F 39. D 40. A
前文“The roots of most plants grow below the ground. There, they have some very important jobs.( 大多数植物的根长在地下。在那里,它们有一些非常重要的工作。)”提到“根系有重要作用”,后文“They also take in water and minerals to feed the plant. And in many plants, the roots store food and nutrients.( 它们也吸收水和矿物质来喂养植物。在许多植物中,根储存着食物和营养。)”衔接“吸收水分和矿物质、储存养分”,空格处需补充根系的另一核心功能 ——固定植物。E选项“The roots secure the plant in the ground.( 根系将植物固定在土壤中。)”
前文“When you put roots down, you make a place your home by creating connections. You get a job and maybe buy a house. You also make friends and join activities.( 当你扎下根来,你就通过建立联系把一个地方变成了你的家。你找了份工作,也许还买了房子。你也会结交朋友,参加活动。)”解释“put roots down”的含义 ——“建立联系、扎根某地”,空格处需进一步类比“植物根系”与“人类扎根”的相似性。G选项“Just like the roots of a plant, they ground you.( 就像植物的根系一样,这些联系让你扎根(稳定)下来。)”,用 “ground you”呼应植物根系“固定”的功能,完美承接前文“Each connection makes it harder for you to leave.( 每一次联系都会让你更难离开。)”
前文“And that brings us to another way we use the word “root”. (这就引出了我们使用单词“root”的另一种方式。)”过渡到“root 的另一用法”,后文举例“For example, I could say that my love of mystery stories is rooted in my childhood full of Agatha Christie books.( 例如,我可以说我对神秘故事的热爱源于我充满阿加莎·克里斯蒂书籍的童年。)” F选项“It can also be the start or cause of something.( 它也可以指某事的开端或原因。)”
前文“For example, I could say that my love of mystery stories is rooted in my childhood full of Agatha Christie books.( 例如,我可以说我对神秘故事的热爱源于我充满阿加莎·克里斯蒂书籍的童年。)”讲“root 表示‘根源’(如爱好的起源)”,后文“So, people could say that a small town’s problems are rooted in a lack of good jobs.( 所以,人们可以说一个小镇的问题根源于缺乏好工作。)” D选项“Similarly, problems have roots too.( 同样,问题也有根源。)”,用“similarly”体现类比关系,自然过渡到“问题的根源”这一话题,与后文“rooted in a lack of good jobs”呼应。故选D项。
前文“As people say, roots are underground.( 正如人们所说,roots在地下。)”提到“roots 在地下”,后文衔接“To get to the root of the city’s larger problem, we must dig deeper.”(为了找到这个城市更大问题的根源,我们必须深入挖掘。)” A 选项“You must dig to reach them.( 你必须挖掘才能触及它们。)”,直接呼应后文“dig deeper”,符合逻辑,且衔接“dig to go with some root expressions”的话题。故选A项。

Benjamin was a high school student who lived with his grandma. His dad had to travel a lot for work, so he was rarely at home. Grandma was the one who woke Benjamin up every morning, made his favorite breakfast, and listened to him talk about school life after dinner. Benjamin loved Grandma very much, and she was his most important person.
One morning during the summer vacation, Grandma suddenly felt very weak. She tried to stand up but fell back on the sofa. Benjamin was scared. He quickly called his dad. When his dad arrived, he carried Grandma to the car and rushed to the hospital. The doctor said Grandma needed to stay in the hospital for a few days to get better. His dad filled out all the hospital forms and stayed with them until evening.
Just then, his dad’s phone rang. It was his boss. The boss said there was an important project to discuss, and his dad had to go to another city right away. His dad looked at Grandma in the hospital bed, then at Benjamin. He frowned (皱眉) and said, “I don’t know what to do. I need to take care of your grandma, but I can’t lose my job either.” Benjamin saw the worry in his dad’s eyes. He took a deep breath and said, “Dad, let me take care of Grandma. I can bring her meals, help her walk, and call the nurse if she needs anything. I’ ll also read some books in the hospital.”
At first, his dad didn’t agree. He said, “You’ re still in high school. It’s too hard for you.” But Benjamin kept trying to persuade him. “Dad, I’m not a little kid anymore. I can do this. And if there’s a problem, I’ ll call you right away,” After talking for a long time, his dad finally nodded. He patted Benjamin’s shoulder and said, “Okay, but you must tell me everything every day.”

After seven days, Grandma felt much better,
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then, Benjamin looked after his grandma with great care. He bought fresh milk from the shop near the hospital, and then took it to Grandma. He helped Grandma sit up and fed her slowly. When Grandma felt bored, he read storybooks to her —— they were the same booksGrandma used to read to him when he was little. In the afternoon, he read his books on the chair next to the bed. Whenever Grandma wanted to walk around, he held her arm carefully to keep her steady. The nurses all praised Benjamin for being a good boy.
After seven days, Grandma felt much better. When his dad came back, he saw Grandma smiling and Benjamin helping her fold clothes. His dad’s eyes were wet. He walked over and hugged Benjamin tightly. “Thank you, my boy. You did such a great job.” Benjamin smiled and said,“It’s what I should do. Grandma takes care of me every day, so I want to take care of her too.” That week, Benjamin learned that being brave isn’t about not being scared; it’s about doing what needs to be done even when it’s hard.

D. To set up a non-profit organization for pets.
25. How does Tera feel about Odin?
A. Fearful. B. Envious. C. Indifferent. D. Grateful.
26. What is Geller’s attitude to the homeless people’s adopting pets?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Flexible. D. Critical.
27. Which can explain the underlined word “forfeit” in paragraph 5?
A. Remember. B. Find. C. Lose. D. Consult.

Thanks to a device developed by a British technology firm this barrier is being overcome.

A You must dig to reach them.
B. We should know about its roots.
C The trees always have many roots.
D. Similarly, problems have roots too.
E. The roots secure the plant in the ground.
F. It can also be the start or cause of something.
G. Just like the roots of a plant, they ground you.
