Yasmin Alkashef grew up in Egypt learning English and Arabic. From a very young age, she loved languages. In fourth grade, she began learning French. “I was always very good at these classes, and I enjoyed them very much,” Alkashef says. Her love of languages continued into high school, where she began training to be a translator. Now she interprets and translates for people professionally.
Alkashef has been a translator for 20 years. She’s a member of the American Translators Association board of directors, and is a certified Arabic-to-English translator, a certified court interpreter, and a conference interpreter.
Most interpreters and translators are freelancers, which means they’re not employed as staff for an organization or company. “Being a freelancer is always fun, because every week is different, and the topics are always different,” she says. One day you are translating a document about clean water, and the next day, you are in court, interpreting a complicated case. The following day, you’re at a conference about international peace, she adds.
Alkashef has interpreted at court cases and film festivals, and at political events with people such as presidents and kings. The work can be exciting. “However, interpreters speak in the first person,” Alkashef says. “When they say something terrible, your subconscious (潜意识) does not understand it is somebody else’s story. So interpreters come home with this burden, and they have to do self-care to take care of their mental health.”
Alkashef is most grateful that through her work, she’s able to help others. “It’s more than just the words. The interpreter brings an understanding of the cultures, of history, of a lot of things,” she says. Over the years, Alkashef has learned that cultures and languages are not as different from one another as they might seem. “We share more than what we think,” she says. Her advice to would-be interpreters and translators is to work hard constantly, learn as much as you can, and keep up with technology, especially with the development of AI.
4 What prepared Alkashef for her career as a translator and interpreter?
A. Her early passion and training.
B. Her multiple cultural identities.
C. Her professional work experience.
D. Her natural gift for her native language.
5. What is Paragraph 3 mainly discussing regarding freelancers?
A. Their historical backgrounds. B. Their career advancements.
C. Their strictdaily routines. D. Their work characteristics.
6. What can be learnt about Alkashef’s job?
A. It possesses a two-sided nature.
B. It makes her a famous freelancer.
C. It teaches her to bear others’ pressure.
D. It has a psychological adjustment effect.
7. Which is one of Alkashef’s career values?
A. Quitting short-term success in any job.
B. Valuing the culture’s voice in every word.
C. Advancing with the times at all moments.
D Balancing ambition and work-life harmony.

A new study finds something special about Australia’s crocodiles (鳄鱼), which is related to climate change.
“On hot nights, the water stays warm, but the air cools down. So, crocodiles will move onto the river bank to cool off,” the study writes. “During the day, they might dive down really deep where it’s a bit cooler. Or they might lie on the bank in the shade.” Researchers tracked 203 crocodiles at the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve in northern Queensland to test whether these strategies help during extreme heat. They collected data on crocodile body temperature, daily distance traveled and diving behavior, then compared that to local temperatures. Ultimately, they discovered more.
From 2008 to 2023, average air temperatures increased by between 0.14 and 0.54° F-and the animals’ average body temperature also rose during that period, and their performance decreases.
“During very hot years, we’re finding that their body temperatures are starting to reach points where we know their behavior is impacted,” says study lead author Kaitlin Barham, a wildlife ecology researcher. At the hottest temperatures, crocodiles spent less time diving and more time performing cooling behaviors. Since crocodiles are hunters that rely on remaining underwater for the element of surprise, this can affect their capacity to catch their food. “Every minute they’re up on the bank trying to cool down is a minute they’re not spending traveling, reproducing or looking for food,” Barham adds.
The current research focused on the northern part of the crocodiles’ range, and the scientists would like to see more analysis on the southern parts. “It would be really interesting to see how crocodiles that live at the southern part of their range in Australia, where they’re a bit cooler, deal with similar heat waves,” says Barham to Imma Perfetto at Cosmos Magazine.
So far, scientists haven’t uncovered any evidence that the northern crocodiles are moving south to seek cooler temperatures. “We hope they have the capacity to defend themselves against the worst of the heat our current climate throws at them, without leaving their local river system,” the team writes.
8. Why did researchers track the 203 crocodiles originally?
A. To collect their body temperatures. B. To assess their cooling approaches.
C. To study their physical conditions. D. To monitor their diving behaviors.
9. What’s the result of crocodiles’ shorter dive times?
A. Their reproduction rate falls. B. Their travel distance increases.
C. Their hunting ability is affected. D. Their temperatures rise quickly.
10. What do the scientists hope to do?
A. Study the southern crocodiles’ behaviors.
B. Move the northern crocodiles to the south.
C. Extend the research time on the crocodiles.
D. Help the crocodiles to adapt to heat waves.
11. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Crocodiles’ Mild Responses to Temperature
B. Temperature’s Negative Impacts on Crocodiles
C. Temperature Changes in Crocodiles’ Habitats
D. Crocodiles’ Defense of Their Body Temperature

Major biotech (生物技术) companies that produce a lot of made-to-order DNA for scientists have protections in place to keep dangerous biological material out of the hands of would-be harmful people.
But now, a new study has demonstrated how AI could be used to easily get around those biosafety processes. A team of AI researchers found that protein-design tools could be used to “paraphrase” the DNA codes of poisonous proteins. “Re-writing them in ways that could preserve their structure, and potentially their function,” says Eric Horvitz, Microsoft’s chief scientific officer.
Computer scientists used AI to generate DNA codes for more than 75,000 variants (变体) of dangerous proteins-and firewalls used by DNA makers weren’t consistently able to catch them. “To our concern,” says Horvitz, “they slipped past the biosecurity screening systems used worldwide by DNA companies to flag dangerous orders.” A fix was quickly written and applied to the biosecurity screening software. But it’s not perfect — it still couldn’t ascertain some variants.
“AI-powered protein design is one of science’s most exciting frontiers. We’re seeing advances in medicine and public health,” says HIorvitz. “Yet like many powerful technologies, these tools can be misused.” Biologists have debated whether to openly publish certain experimental results, though open discussions are science’s lifeblood. The researchers and the journal behind this study held back some information and will restrict access to their data and software. They enlisted a non-profit third party to decide who has a reasonable need to know.
“This is the first time such a model has been employed to manage risks of sharing dangerous information in a scientific publication,” says Horvitz. Scientists, worried about future biosecurity threats, praised this work. “My overall reaction to that was favorable,” says scientist Arturo Casadevall. “Here we have a system in which we are identifying weak points. And what you’re seeing is an attempt to correct known weak points. But what are the weak points that we don’t know about and that will require future corrections?” says Casadevall.
12. How does AI challenge the existing biosecurity defenses?
A. By inventing new protein-design tools.
B. By monitoring the screening systems.
C. By improving the firewalls’ consistency.
D By changing harmful DNA instructions.
13. What does the underlined word “ascertain” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Protect. B. Hide. C. Produce. D. Detect.
14. What is the scientists’ pioneering attempt in biosafety?
A. They supported open publication fully.
B. They controlled key information access.
C. They allowed relevant open discussions.
D They invested heavily in medicine and health.
15. What is Casadevall’s attitude to future biosafety?
A. Unclear. B. Confident. C. Concerned. D. Doubtful.

A rewilding trip is a special kind of travel that helps restore nature while letting people connect with the wild. ____16____ It takes you to places where ecosystems are being brought back to life, showing you why protecting wildlife matters.
Rewilding trips first started in European countryside decades ago. Back then, some farmers and nature lovers worked together to turn abandoned farmlands into wild areas. Over time, more people noticed these restored projects and wanted to visit. ____17____ These once-transformed spaces later became key destinations for rewilding travel. A typical example is Knepp in England, where a former farmland has become a 3,500-acre wild space. ____18____ You can also wander along 16 miles of quiet paths, stay in small wooden huts, and even share simple barbecues with other travelers in the woods.
These trips aren’t just about watching nature. ____19____ With guides, you can learn to tell different wild plants apart, practice easy survival skills like building a small shelter, or help monitor animal tracks to see which creatures have passed by. Sometimes, you can even take simple notes on the plants or birds you see to help with local nature records.
____20____ They let you see how small actions restore ecosystems, and leave you with a deeper love for the wild. For local communities, they bring small but steady income from guiding or simple stays, keeping hometowns lively. For travelers, there’s no need for phones or laptops here, so they can fully focus on the calm sounds and sights of the natural world around them.
A. Rewilding trips help both nature and people.
B. Then, such trips gradually grew in popularity worldwide.
C. Here, you can spot various rare animals living a happy life.
D. This kind of trip is quite different from staying in fancy hotels.
E. Travelers ease stress from busy study or work through the trips.
F. You often get to join in gentle, fun activities too during the trips.
G. Rewilding trips also offer a hopeful response to the climate crisis.

After Ms Morgan’s art class in the art room on Wednesday, Vince would stay back to help tidy up.
The first thing he noticed when he joined the class last semester was the old wooden easel (画架) by the window. Ms Morgan had talked about it so often that every student knew its story-it was a gift from her dearest workmate, Mrs Hale, who retired after 30years of teaching art here. That easel was more than just wood and nails. It was covered with tiny signatures of students from past years-from the kids who’d gone on to study art in college. Every morning, Ms Morgan would wipe its surface with a soft cloth, careful not to damage the names. Last month, when a rainstorm leaked through the window, she’d rushed to move it to safety, saying, ”This easel’s held more dreams than any textbook in this room.”
As Vince carried a box of paintbrushes and a tube of paint, he tripped slightly, and his left arm crashed into the easel. It fell down! One of the easel’s legs, which had been joined with wood glue, broke into two pieces. Some signatures on the easel were also defaced (污损).
His heart sank like a stone. He dropped to his knees, fingers brushing the familiar signatures, and felt a cold panic spread through his back. His mum had told him once about a time she’d broken her neighbor’s plant pot as a kid and hidden it-she’d felt guilty for weeks, her stomach hurting every time she passed the neighbor’s yard. “Avoiding the truth doesn’t fix what’s broken,” she’d said.
Vince replayed that line in his head, but the thought of Ms Morgan’s sad face made his throat tight. He stood up, staring at the broken leg, and even considered dragging the easel into the storage room-maybe no one would find it right away. All afternoon, he sat through math and history class with that image stuck in his head, unable to focus on anything.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: By the end of school, Vince dragged his feet to Ms Morgan’s office.

D. By changing harmful DNA instructions.
13. What does the underlined word “ascertain” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Protect. B. Hide. C. Produce. D. Detect.
14. What is the scientists’ pioneering attempt in biosafety?
A They supported open publication fully.
B. They controlled key information access.
C. They allowed relevant open discussions.
D. They invested heavily in medicine and health.
15. What is Casadevall’s attitude to future biosafety?
A. Unclear. B. Confident. C. Concerned. D. Doubtful.
【答案】12. D 13. D 14. B 15. C

But it’s not perfect — it still couldn’t ascertain some variants.
根据第四段中“The researchers and the journal behind this study held back some information and will restrict access to their data and software. They enlisted a non-profit third party to decide who has a reasonable need to know. (该研究团队及相关期刊暂未公布全部信息,并将限制数据与软件的访问权限。他们委托非营利第三方机构来审定具有合理知情需求的人员资格)”可知,科学家们在生物安全方面所做出的开创性尝试是控制关键信息的访问。故选B项。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: By the end of school, Vince dragged his feet to Ms Morgan’s office.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: Feeling a weight lifted, Vince followed Ms Morgan’s advice to repair the easel together.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
By the end of school, Vince dragged his feet to Ms Morgan’s office. His heart was pounding loud. When Ms Morgan looked up from her papers, he said in a low voice, “I broke the easel — I tripped with paintbrushes and hit it. I’m so sorry. I know how much it means to you.” He stared at his shoes, waiting for anger, but Ms Morgan stood up and spoke softly. She told him she wasn’t angry, but proud he’d been honest, adding the easel was special, but honesty more precious, and suggested they fix it together with wood glue and paint.
Feeling a weight lifted, Vince followed Ms Morgan’s advice to repair the easel together. They went to the art room. Vince fetched sandpaper to smooth broken leg’s edges, while Ms Morgan spread wood glue on pieces. She handed him a brush and they touched up defaced signatures with matching paint, then added a blue star by old ones. Vince said it still had a faint mark, and Ms Morgan smiled, “Honesty isn’t about never making mistakes. It’s about the courage to tell the truth when you do, and taking action to fix.”

②修复:fix/repair
