Dear Peter,
Hearing that you need some advice on what to talk about in your lecture on English learning,I’m writing to give you some suggestions.
First of all, perhaps you could focus on English listening and speaking skills, as many students especially those in Grade One are struggling with them. Your practical tips, such as how to improve listening accuracy and how to speak English naturally and fluently, would be helpful. What’s more, introducing some effective and creative ways to enlarge English vocabulary is a wise choice. After all, a rich vocabulary allows us to accurately interpret passages and convey our ideas thoroughly. Additionally, why not add a Q & A session? In this way, students may get immediate feedback in the interactive activity.
Hopefully, my suggestions will be of some help and wish your lecture a great success.
Yours,

Every year vaccines (疫苗) save around five million lives globally. Unfortunately, most vaccines need to be kept cool to stop them from going off. This makes it difficult to transport them to remote areas, because if they get too warm they won’t work. This is what Dr Asel Sartbaeva has been attempting to solve.
As a child, Asel Sartbaeva always looked up to scientists like Michael Faraday and Marie Curie. When she studied at Cambridge University, she met an award-winning physicist called Brian Josephson. “My jaw dropped,” she said, “It felt like a ‘big thing’ for me to be working in the same place as scientists I had looked up to for so long.”
In 2010, when taking her daughter to be vaccinated, she noticed the doctor had kept the vaccines in the fridge. Later she found that there were places around the world where vaccines couldn’t be delivered because they couldn’t be refrigerated (冷藏) for the whole journey—meaning some people miss out on getting vaccines. Sartbaeva wanted to invent a way to keep vaccines stable at all temperatures, so she came up with ensilication (硅化法) to improve their stability.
Over the next few years, Sartbaeva and her team have tested out different ways to see if the ensilicated vaccines can be kept stable when they’re out of the fridge. One of these experiments involved sending vaccines in the post from Bath to Newcastle. The journey is more than 300 miles, which can take a day or two by post, but the vaccines were still safe to use when they arrived.
In 2021, Sartbaeva was named a UNICEF Ambassador for Girls in Science Project. She designed experiments to get girls interested in the science-based subjects. “I hope they’ll encourage more girls to work in scientific field because we need more like them. Besides scientific and teaching work, I strive to bridge the gap between scientific innovations and the public, making them more accessible,” she said.
24. How did Sartbaeva feel when she met Brian Josephson?
A. Embarrassed. B. Relieved. C. Scared. D. Honored.
25. What drove Sartbaeva to invent ensilication?
A. Poor quality of vaccines. B. Vaccine instability without refrigeration.
C. Her daughter’s unexpected illness. D. Children’s high demand for vaccines.
26. Why does the author mention the journey in paragraph 4?
A. To show the effectiveness of ensilication.
B. To emphasize the high cost of transportation.
C. To compare different means of transportation.
D. To explain the working principle of ensilication.
27. What can we know about Sartbaeva according to the last paragraph?
A. She encourages girls to be UNICEF Ambassadors.
B. She tries to clear the misunderstanding about women.
C. She aims to popularize science among common people.
D. She thinks females more talented than males in science.

An ancient Latin proverb says “Aquila non capit muscas”—eagles don’t hunt flies—meaning that important ones shouldn’t concern themselves with small, insignificant matters. But the lions in East Africa should concern themselves with the seemingly insignificant ants, because these ants are changing their lifestyles.
The story starts with the acacia trees (金合欢树) in an African wildlife area in central Kenya. Some of these acacia trees provide food and shelter for specific ant species, which in turn defend the tree against herbivores (食草动物). The ants are actively attacking and driving away herbivores that attempt to feed on the tree’s leaves. This is highly effective; the ants not only physically harm the herbivores but also release chemicals that can deter other potential attackers.
But these ants are in trouble. Another species called the “big-headed” ant is destroying entire groups of tree- protecting ants. This, in turn, sets off an entire chain of events that ends up influencing when and how lions can hunt.
This ant invasion (入侵) affects one thing after another. It leaves the acacia trees defenseless against herbivores especially elephants. The elephants come in and eat the acacias at five to seven times the rate observed in uninvaded areas. The lions, while hunting for food, have no more trees to use for hiding. This reduced tree cover makes lions less successful at hunting and pushes them to find different areas to hunt in.
“These tiny invaders are pulling on the ties that put an African ecosystem (生态系统) together, determining who is eaten and where,” said Todd Palmer, an ecologist from Florida.
The lions, which are already endangered, are managing to cope with this by no longer focusing their attention on zebras. The zebras, of course, can see them much better on the approach given the lack of cover. Instead, they are targeting water buffalo. But this also isn’t the end of the story. Who knows what the lions’ changing strategy will mean for the ecosystem down the line?
28. What does the underlined word “deter” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Direct. B. Discourage. C. Recognize. D. Seek.
29. What role do the elephants play in the chain reaction?
A. Cooperating with “big-headed” ants. B. Damaging the hiding place for lions.
C. Protecting the acacias from herbivores. D. Starting off the disturbance of the chain.
30. What can we infer from Todd Palmer’s words in paragraph 5?
A. Ecologists have found a way to control big-headed ants.
B. The African ecosystem will soon recover from the ant invasion.
C. Only big-headed ants can influence the survival of other species.
D. Big-headed ants have broken the balance of the African ecosystem.
31. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Tiny Ants, Big Impact: Changing the Way Lions Hunt.
B. The Law of Jungle: How Elephants Rule the Ecosystem.
C. Zebras or Buffalo: Lions’ Choice Shift in Food Preference.
D. Ecologists’ New Discovery: Mystery Behind African Acacia Trees.

At top universities, there’s a phenomenon known as “Stanford Duck Syndrome (综合征)”. Like ducks, students appear to move gracefully (优雅地). However, beneath the surface, they’re kicking desperately to keep up.
Experts from Stanford’s Health Services uncovered this troubling trend: during the day, many Stanford students are seen socializing in cafés, seemingly without any stress or the need to study. However, at night, they start studying, sometimes for the entire night, trying to maintain the image of effortless success. This comes at a high price: tiredness and anxiety are widespread. Furthermore, it leads to a common misconception: true talents achieve success with ease, while those working hard are less able.
In an effort to challenge this misconception, researchers designed an experiment. Participants were asked to observe a series of colors carefully while scientists tracked their brain activity throughout the process. The experiment was divided into two parts: one with easily recognizable colors and the other with colors that were quite similar, requiring more effort to distinguish. As the difficulty of the task increased, there was a noticeable increase in brain activity, particularly in areas linked to memory and abstract reasoning.
The study shows that as tasks require more effort, more areas of the brain become engaged. Growth doesn’t come from talent alone but from the consistent application of effort. Our brain functions like a muscle. Without effort, even our inborn talents will fade (衰退) over time.
This pushes us to reconsider the underlying culture that might lead to this phenomenon. Instead of focusing too much on results or singing high praises for inborn talents, we should emphasize the learning process and continuous improvement. By encouraging a culture that values effort, we can help students realize that intelligence is not fixed but grows through hard work. Such a shift would not only reduce the pressures associated with the “Stanford Duck Syndrome”, but also have a profound impact on personal development and the future of education.
32. Which of the following is experiencing “Stanford Duck Syndrome”?
A. Someone who thinks more of effort than well-being.
B. Someone who reduces stress through social activities.
C. Someone who shows graceful images to attract others.
D. Someone who hides hard work to appear naturally gifted.
33. What can we learn about the experiment according to paragraph 3?
A. It shows effort fuels the brain activity. B. It proves focus enhances brain function.
C. It associates careful observation with talent. D. It links memory storage to abstract reasoning.
34. What is the author’s main concern about “Stanford Duck Syndrome”?
A. It values the learning process over results.
B. It causes stress and false ideas about success.
C. It makes students focus too much on socializing.
D. It prevents students from recognizing their talents.
35. Which of the following might the author agree with?
A. Sweat is the ink that writes a masterpiece.
B. Fortune favors those with high intelligence.
C. Work in silence and let success make the noise.
D. Talent plays a more critical role in success than effort.

Please take a look at the teaching program in front of you. As you should all know by now, this course is given on tuesdays and thursdays from three, fifteen, four, fifty in the afternoon. We will be meeting in this room for the first half of the course, but we will be using the research lab every other week on friday in room four or five during the last two months of the course. This is the text for this lesson beyond language. Unfortunately, the books haven't come in yet, but I was told that you should be able to buy them at the books toward the day after tomorrow. Again, as you see in your course outline, the grade is determined by your performance in the mid term and final exams, classroom tests and on your research work. My office hours are from nine am twelve AM on wednesdays, and you can set up a date to meet me at other times as well.
