Draper, who grew up surrounded by cooking, didn’t consider a career in the food industry until she left her previous job to care for her mother and a newborn baby. During this period, she spent much time on cookbooks, Food Network shows, and food experiments, forming a deep connection with food that later shaped her professional path. When ready to re-enter the workforce, she set non-negotiable criteria for her new job: It’d have to involve food and people. Draper initially secured an office role at a corporate catering (餐饮) company near her home outside Philadelphia. However, when she stepped in to assist the kitchen during a period of operational pressure tied to workforce limitations, her boss recognized her potential and offered a permanent shift to culinary work. Starting with simple tasks like salad preparation, she quickly advanced to more complex dishes, fueled by a passion she describes as “a burning fire” once lit. Balancing work and learning, she signed up for culinary classes — an opportunity she’d previously thought unattainable — and rose to the position of general manager. Fifteen years into her role, Draper wondered if she should try a new career. Yet, no alternative satisfied her as deeply as cooking. A chance introduction to a family seeking a private chef opened a new chapter. Unaware of this special area in the food industry, she began planning meals, grocery shopping, and cooking in clients’ homes, uncovering a need for tailored culinary solutions among busy or uninterested cooks. Using her website Korea’s Kitchen, she expanded her client base, eventually moving from private homes to a church basement kitchen and specializing in family meals and catering. Driven to grow her business Draper sought her own kitchen space, a goal achieved through networking. In her new venue, she hosts tastings, cooking classes, and catered events. Today, as a leader of an eight-person team, she remains rooted in her core mission: connecting people through food. 4. What do we know about Draper from paragraph 2? A. She considered food career early. B. She ignored her family needs. C. She had clear new job requirements. D. She lacked cooking experience. 5. Why did Draper go to help the kitchen while working in an office? A. She wanted extra income. B. A staff shortage occurred. C. Her boss demanded it. D. She sought promotion. 6. What made Draper feel the demand for personalized culinary services? A. Clients’ strict diets. B. A family’s request. C. Food industry trends. D. Her website feedback. 7. What can we learn from Draper’s career story? A. Education guarantees success. B. Family limits one’s career. C. One’s skills beat one’s planning. D. Passion drives new growth. C Do you feel lonely? Don’t rush to a “no” answer just yet — the World Health Organization (WHO) recently addressed loneliness as a pressing health threat. It called for countries and organizations to make social connections a priority. Loneliness, although commonly described as the state of being alone, is actually a state of mind marked by feelings of isolation despite wanting social connections. So, people who are lonely usually experience the emotional pain of not being connected with others. Solitude (独处), on the other hand, is voluntary. People who enjoy spending time by themselves continue to maintain positive social relationships that they can return to when they want connection, according to the Verywell Mind website. Social isolation impacts the health and well-being of all age groups across the world. According to the WHO, one in four old people experience social isolation. Among adolescents, between 5 and 15 percent experience loneliness, but the numbers are likely to be underestimations, said the organization. Young people are not immune (免疫的) to loneliness. Social isolation can affect anyone, of any age, anywhere, said Chido Mpemba, African Union youth envoy, in the WHO’s press release on loneliness. In terms of teenagers, social disconnection can lead to poorer education outcomes since young people who have experienced loneliness in high school are more likely to drop out of university. Lack of social connection carries an equivalent risk of early death with other better-known risk factors such as smoking, obesity and air pollution, or potentially even greater. Loneliness has a far-reaching impact comparable to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day, according to a 2017 study. Previous studies have shown that loneliness has been linked to anxiety and depression and can increase the risk of heart disease by 30 percent. A 2015 study looked at the immune systems of its participants who were identified as lonely. It showed that they tend to have more inflammation (炎症) and less immunity, which can be a result of feeling stressed due to loneliness. To tackle this crisis, the WHO launched the Commission on Social Connection, which will hold its first leadership meeting from Dec 6 to 8 to outline solutions to build social connections at scale. 8. What can we learn about people experiencing loneliness from the text? A. They prefer solitude over social interaction. B. They feel lacking in social connection. C. They feel other people isolate them on purpose. D. They struggle to maintain social relationships. 9. How does loneliness affect people of different ages, according to WHO? A. It is harder for older people to get rid of it. B. Teenagers are usually not influenced by it. C. People can suffer from it regardless of their age D. Adults experience it primarily due to workplace stress. 10. How does the author explain the impact of loneliness on health? A. By citing previous studies. B. By asking the readers some questions. C. By interviewing lonely people. D. By comparing it with other diseases. 11. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. WHO Warns of Loneliness as a Pressing Health Threat and Acts B. Loneliness VS Solitude: Key Differences Explained C Social Isolation: A Greater Risk Than Smoking for Early Death D How adolescents Can Overcome Loneliness and Stay Connected D The future of human flight arrived quietly, at a time when no one was clocking up air miles. It was June 2020 and the skies were unusually empty, but down on the ground, something huge was happening with a small aircraft. The European Union Aviation (航空) Safety Agency(EASA), certified a two-seat plane made in Slovenia as safe to fly. Within a few years, the plane called Pipistrel Velis Electro was certified in the UK, the US and elsewhere. “The achievement represents a growing interest and trust in the reliability of electric planes,” says Dr Tine Tomazic, director of engineering and programs at the company Pipistrel. “We recently completed production of our 100th Velis Electro, marking a significant milestone for Pipistrel and the industry.” “The aviation industry is improving its carbon emissions (排放) by nearly 2% per passenger mile per year,” says Dr Guy Gratton, associate professor of aviation at Granfield University in the UK. However, the global demand for air transport is estimated to double by 2040, which means that while other industries are showing meaningful signs of decarbonizing, aviation is on track to increase its total emissions. “So, we need to prevent aviation becoming a majority polluter,” Gratton says. “Now, how can we do that?” The Velis Electro is leading the way, but the first electric planes aren’t designed to replace large passenger aircraft. Instead, these pioneer aircraft are designed specifically for flight training, offering just 50 minutes of flight time with 20 minutes reserve and a range of 185 kilometers. It’s powered by a 58kW electric motor with two lightweight lithium batteries. Traditional batteries are either too heavy or too hot to be practical for an aircraft. Pipistrel’s system, however, makes the whole powertrain safe, light and efficient. The battery weighs 70 kg and the whole aircraft weighs just 425 kg when empty. Pilots don’t need an additional license to fly Velis Electro, but they’ll notice differences. “The aircraft delivers power without hesitation,” Tomazic explains. “It uses a simplified user interface in a cockpit (驾驶舱) that maintains the same look and feel of its conventionally-powered planes. The cockpit is also much quieter than with conventional aircraft.” 12. What does the underlined part “something huge” in paragraph 1 refer to? A. The small plane got very popular. B. The small plane was being produced. C. The small plane had improved greatly. D. The small plane received official approval. 13. Why is Dr Guy Gratton mentioned in paragraph 3? A. To show the significance of Velis Electro. B. To tell the development of Velis Electro. C. To prove the growing demand for air travel. D. To stress the aviation’s contribution to environment. 14. What do we know about the design of Velis Electro? A. It involves huge batteries. B. It aims to drive large aircraft. C. It is based on global cooperation. D. It is intended for short flights. 15. How does the author mainly describe the advantages of Pipistrel’s batteries? A. By giving examples. B. By making comparisons. C. By presenting detailed figures. D. By showing scientific analyses. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Getting older means greater maturity and wisdom. ___16___ In a society that is aging fast, it has become crucial to find ways to prevent related mental and emotional disorders. They came in various flavors and were all appetizing. Whenever I attempted to read aloud like Mom, however, no words dared to climb out. My world was silent, without a voice to call my own. That silence invited jeers (嘲笑), tears, and many heartbreaks. I couldn't remember how many times I had switched schools and how many times I had run home crying, signing desperately to Mom, “I'm done with school.” My fingers were the voice I couldn't find and the only way I could cry out. Everything changed, however, when I met Ms. Park. It was a lovely day. Mom drove me to my new school and I felt calm until the car stopped in front of a large white building. The moment I got off, Ms. Park, my new English teacher, came up. “Nice to meet you,” she signed. How could she know sign language! I signed back while pretending to be distracted by the posters on the walls. “Interested in our writing contest?” she asked. I looked up, noticing the huge black-and-white words on one poster. “Try it! Just hand in a story to me next week,” Ms. Park smiled. The thought of entering fascinated me. It was my chance to speak without actually speaking. At home, I sat with a blank sheet of paper in front of me. Closing my eyes, I heard Mom's honey-like stories, so tasty that anyone who listened begged for more. She always told me that satisfying stories came from the heart. Then, I had it. What story could be closer to my heart than my own? So after a week of intense writing, I let my story flow through my pen and drip onto the paper and handed it to Ms. Park. Then, one day, when walking through a crowded hall, I saw Ms. Park signing from afar, “You've made the cut (入选)!” Her dancing fingers were too good to be true and I began waiting for the day of the upcoming awards ceremony. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。 That day, however, I learnt all winners should read stories on stage. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A story began streaming from my fingers, along with Ms. Park's voice. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 南宁二中2025年11月高三月考 英语 (时间:120分钟,共150分) 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 做题时,先将答案标在试卷上。 1. The topic of my speech is “Our Planet, Our Responsibility.” As we all know, a healthy environment provides us with essential resources, without which life would be unimaginable. Therefore, it is our responsibility to protect it. So, what can we do? Firstly, it is highly advisable to embrace a low-carbon lifestyle, such as choosing public transport or cycling over private cars. Moreover, we should cultivate the habit of reducing waste, saying no to single-use plastics and reusing items like shopping bags. These habits, once formed, will make a real difference. The future of our planet lies in our hands. Let’s take immediate action to build a more sustainable world for all. 第二节(满分25分) 【47题答案】 【答案】That day, however, I learnt all winners should read stories on stage. Panic gripped me immediately. How could I, without a voice of my own, read aloud to an audience? My heart raced as I imagined the crowd waiting for words that wouldn’t come. Ms. Park noticed my distress and signed reassuringly, “We’ll find a way together.” Though fear lingered, her words comforted me somewhat. Together, we rehearsed tirelessly, combining my signs with her clear voice, until the story felt like a joint performance we were ready to deliver. A story began streaming from my fingers, along with Ms. Park’s voice. As her voice rang out, matched perfectly with my signs, I felt a surge of confidence.
