Middle School Laboratory Safety Rules
Science is about discovering and exploring the natural world. Explorations can happen in the classroom, laboratory or field. As part of your science lessons, you will take part in many activities using many different materials, equipment and chemicals, which can be dangerous if not used correctly. As a result, you may be faced with biological, chemical or physical hazards.
Safety is THE MOST IMPORTANT thing. The following safety rules have been developed for the protection and safety of everyone.
★Behave yourself in a responsible way at all times. Risky behavior-such as throwing things and doing experiments without teachers’ instructions is not allowed.
★Eating, drinking, chewing gum, wearing make-up, touching contact lenses (隐形眼镜) or other unsafe activities are not allowed.
★Do not enter or work in the laboratory unless an instructor is present.
★Never enter areas where chemicals are kept.
★Taking any chemicals or equipment away from the classroom or laboratory is not allowed.
The safety rules must be followed at all times. Review these rules with your teacher and parents, then sign and get the signature (签名) of a parent. The signature shows that you understand the lab can be dangerous, and that you have read the rules and agree to follow them at all times. Signatures are needed before you can go on with any lab or science classroom activity.

An Indonesian librarian is lending books to children in exchange for trash they collect in a novel way to clean up the environment and get the kids to read more.
Each weekday, Raden Roro Hendarti, a librarian in Indonesia’s Java Island rides her three-wheeler with books piled up at the back for children in Muntang village to exchange for plastic cups, bags and other waste that she carries back. As soon as she shows up, little children, many accompanied by their mothers, surround her “Trash Library” and ask loudly for the books. They are all carrying trash bags and Raden’s three-wheeler quickly fills up with them as the books fly out. She’s happy the kids are going to spend less time on online games as a result.
“Let us get kids to read more and build a culture of literacy from a young age,” Raden said. “We should also take care of our waste in order to fight against climate change and to save the earth from trash,” she said.
She collects about 100 kg of waste each week, which is then sorted out by her colleagues and sent for recycling or sold. She has a stock of 6,000 books to lend and wants to take the mobile service to neighboring areas as well.
Kevin Alamsyah, an eager 11-year-old reader, looks for waste lying in the village. “When there is too much trash, our environment will become dirty and it’s not healthy. That’s why I look for trash to borrow a book,” he says.
The literacy rate for above-15-year-olds in Indonesia is around 96 percent, but a September report by the World Bank warned that the pandemic will leave more than 80% of 15-year-olds below the minimum reading level identified by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

In recent years, researchers of Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab are studying how environmental factors influence many Americans to unnoticeably eat too much. Many people wrongly believe that factors like hunger or boredom and depression are the main causes of overeating, but their research has shown otherwise. It is thought that we overeat if the food is good or if we’re really hungry. In reality, those are two of the last things that determine how much we eat.
In one experiment, the researcher placed jars of candies in workers’ offices for a month. Then, he moved the candies 1.8 m away. The office workers ate five more candies each day when the jar was closer to them, equaling an additional 125 calories a day. It does not sound too bad, but add that up over a year and you will have gained 5.4 kg. “If something is visible, every time we see it, we have to make a decision: to eat it or not?” the researcher explained.
In the other experiment, moviegoers were given five-day-old popcorn, some in medium-size buckets, some in large buckets. The researcher found that moviegoers who had the larger buckets ate 53 percent more, despite its unpleasant taste. He believes that the distraction of the movie and hearing others eat the popcorn persuade people to keep eating.
The findings in other researches have shown that we tend to eat more when we use larger dishes, eat in front of the television, or dine with someone who eats a lot. Researchers of the lab advise a gradual approach in changing eating habits. People can cut a couple of hundred calories a day by doing things such as avoiding open food dishes at the office, using smaller serving bowls, sitting next to the slowest eater and being the last one to start eating.
28. What is the truth shown by the study?
A. We eat more when the food is good.
B. People tend to eat a lot when they dine out.
C. Feeling depressed leads us to overeat.
D. Hunger is not the key factor in overeating.
29. What can we learn from the two experiments?
A. People turn to more candies for more energy.
B. Office workers eat more candies due to visibility.
C. Moviegoers eat more popcorn because it is tasty.
D. People keep eating popcorn to enjoy the movie.
30. What is suggested in changing eating habits?
A. Dining with slim persons. B. Eating while watching films
C. Using smaller dishes. D. Starting eating earlier.
31. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To display a research process.
B. To instruct how to do research experiments.
C. To warn against overeating.
D. To advise being a mindful eater.
D
After Horizon: An American Saga was screened recently during the Cannes Film Festival, the audience clapped for seven minutes. And that’s not even the longest clapping in the festival’s history. That prize goes to Pan’s Labyrinth’s 22-minute clapping in 2006.
Humans probably started clapping early in our history, writes psychologist Alan Crawley in a 2023 review of research on the topic. Our ancestors may not have screened movies, but in the absence of spoken language, they may have realized they could use clapping to signal danger, or frighten enemies.
Clapping’s simplicity and effectiveness make it a universal practice. While babies rarely clap before their first birthday, children master it quickly, gaining its global popularity. Unlike complex gestures (e. g., finger-clicking) , clapping produces loud, effortless noise — Crawley calls it the “non-vocal signal with the highest sound volume.” Socially, it balances politeness and enthusiasm, avoiding the rudeness of screaming, which allows clapping to adapt to contexts ranging from polite theater audiences to lively sports crowds. It also can be an act that strengthens social ties. During some hard times, the practice of organized clapping was, on the surface, about showing appreciation for key workers.
Clapping often spreads like a “social disease,” as observed in studies by Richard Mann in 2013. In academic settings, clapping typically begins with a few individuals, resulting in a chain reaction. Anyone in a crowd will know that a mere handful of clappers can sometimes cause a room of people to follow their behavior.
But what about super-long clapping? Why not just leave it at a minute or two? Back in 2013, Mann told BBC News that the length of clapping did not connect with the quality of the performance. “You have this social pressure to start clapping, but once you’ve started there’s an equally strong social pressure not to stop, until someone starts that stopping.” Then the conclusion would be this: no one in the room wants to be seen — or in the social media age, filmed — as the first one to stop.
32. What does Alan Crawley suggest about the origin of human clapping?
A. It was adopted to replace spoken language.
B. It developed from ancestors’ survival strategies.
C. It appeared as a form of entertainment during festivals.
D. It was first used to signal appreciation for performances.
33. Why is clapping a popular gesture across cultures compared to finger-clicking?
A. Clapping is louder and simpler to do.
B. Clapping is taught to babies earlier in life.
C. Clapping is more polite and more socially accepted.
D. Clapping is used to show appreciation especially in hard times.
34. What did Richard Mann’s 2013 study find about clapping?
A. People clap louder when they are in large audience.
B. Clapping spreads like a chain reaction in a group setting.
C. Clapping seems to have no connection with social pressure.
D. The quality of performances determines the length of clapping.
35. Where does the passage likely come from?
A. A film review magazine.
B. An entertainment news website.
C. A scientific journal on human behaviour.
D. A history textbook on human development.

Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Wherever she went, she was popular, with many kids following her and doing everything she did.
However, her deskmate, Landy, was not in the cool kids’ group. Being the tallest kid in her class, she was ridiculed(嘲笑)by her classmates, who were always chanting(唱起……歌)“Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti(意大利面)”.
Catherine didn’t really like it when the kids chanted “Landy Landy, long as spaghetti”. But she never told them to stop ridiculing Landy either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Catherine went over to visit her grandfather. Her grandfather lives on a farm, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine saw a special one. It looked smaller than the other chickens!
“What’s the matter with it” She asked her grandfather, with a confused look on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could behave. “They have a pecking(啄)order,” he explained, “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
“Oh, what a poor little guy!” Catherine picked the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the little body. Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates. “I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,” she said with a determined look.
Back in school, Catherine told the cool kids about the chicken. “It’s looking healthy,” she said proudly. “It’s bigger and its feathers are growing. Even the cat likes it. She carries it around, and...” Everyone was impressed by Catherine’s story of her lovely chicken, laughter spreading around the classroom.
Then Catherine saw Landy alone in a corner. She felt a pang of guilt as she remembered the chicken on the farm, bullied by its peers just like Landy was bullied by her classmates. The chant “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti” echoed in her mind, but this time it felt like a cruel reminder of her own silence and inaction. Determined to make a change, Catherine made up her mind to reach out to Landy. She walked over, ignoring the whispers and curious glances from the other kids.
But Catherine walked toward Landy, no matter what they said.
A. Feeling sorry for the chicken, Catherine decided to take it home and care for it, and she suddenly thought of Landy who was“ bullied” like the chicken.
B. Back at school, Catherine told her classmates about the chicken she cared for; everyone was impressed, and laughter filled the classroom.
C. At school, Catherine was the most popular kid, while her deskmate Landy was often mocked for being tall; Catherine disliked the mockery but did nothing to stop it or talk to Landy to stay popular.
D. Seeing Landy alone in a corner, Catherine felt guilty, remembered the bullied chicken, and decided to change by walking towards Landy despite others’ glances.
E. One weekend, Catherine found a small chicken on her grandfather’s farm, and her grandfather explained that chickens have a “pecking order” where different ones get pushed and pecked.
________ ________ ________ ________ ________
But Catherine walked toward Landy, no matter what they said.

21. What does the underlined word “hazards” probably mean in Paragraph 1?
A. illnesses. B. examinations. C. dangers. D. experiments.
22. Which of the following might be allowed in the lab?

D Hunger is not the key factor in overeating.
D 29. B 30. C 31.

While babies rarely clap before their first birthday children master it quickly, gaining its global popularity.

I am Li Hua, an 18-year-old high school student. This weekend, I went to the nursing house to help the elderly with their housework. I did this because most of them live alone and struggle with daily chores, and I firmly believe they deserve our care and respect.
Upon arrival, I first cleaned the rooms, wiping the tables and sweeping the floors. Then I helped some old people wash their clothes. Some even told me stories while I was working, which made the time pass quickly.
I felt a deep sense of warmth and achievement. Seeing the bright smiles on their faces, I realized that a small act of kindness could bring great joy to others. It was truly a rewarding experience.

Catherine didn’t really like it when the kids chanted “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti”.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
①. C ②. E ③. A ④. B ⑤. D
68. But Catherine walked toward Landy, no matter what they said. When she reached Landy, she softly said, “Landy, I want to apologize. I should have stopped them from making fun of you before. You know the chicken I told you all about? It was being bullied on the farm, just like you are here. I realized that it’s not right to let others be hurt like this.” Landy looked up at her in surprise, her eyes wide with a mix of disbelief and hope. Catherine continued, “From now on, we can be friends. And I’ll make sure no one bullies you again.” A big smile slowly spread across Landy’s face. The other kids, seeing this, gradually stopped their whispers. Some of them even felt a bit ashamed. Maybe they, too, realized how unkind they had been. From that day on, Catherine and Landy became inseparable. And the “pecking order” in the class finally came to an end, replaced by a new sense of kindness and friendship.
1. 根据原文第一段“Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Wherever she went, she was popular, with many kids following her and doing everything she did.(Catherine是班里最酷的孩子。无论她走到哪里,都很受欢迎,很多同学都跟着她,模仿她做的每一件事。)”、第二段“However, her deskmate, Landy, was not in the cool kids’ group. Being the tallest kid in her class, she was ridiculed(嘲笑)by her classmates, who were always chanting(唱起……歌)“Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti(意大利面)”.(然而,她的同桌Landy却不在酷小孩圈子里。作为班里最高的学生,她常被同学们嘲笑——大家总唱着“Landy,Landy,长如意大利面”。)”以及第三段“Catherine didn’t really like it when the kids chanted “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti”. But she never told them to stop ridiculing Landy either, and nor did she ever talk to her.(Catherine其实并不喜欢同学们这样唱,但她从未阻止过这种嘲笑,也从来没和Landy说过话。)” C“At school, Catherine was the most popular kid, while her deskmate Landy was often mocked for being tall; Catherine disliked the mockery but did nothing to stop it or talk to Landy to stay popular.(在学校,Catherine是最受欢迎的孩子,而她的同桌Landy经常因为个子高而被嘲笑;Catherine不喜欢这种嘲弄,但她没有采取任何措施阻止这种嘲弄,也没有和Landy交谈以保持受欢迎。)”
2. 根据原文第四段“One weekend, Catherine went over to visit her grandfather.(一个周末,Catherine去看望爷爷。)”以及第五段““What’s the matter with it” She asked her grandfather, with a confused look on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could behave. “They have a pecking(啄)order,” he explained, “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”(“它怎么了?”她一脸困惑地问爷爷。爷爷给她讲了鸡的习性:“它们有啄食顺序”, 爷爷解释道,“如果有一只鸡和其他鸡不一样,别的鸡就会把它推开,不停地啄它。有时候啄得太厉害,那只鸡就会死掉。”)”可知,故事接着讲述了Catherine来到了爷爷的农场,并发现了特殊小鸡。选项E“One weekend, Catherine found a small chicken on her grandfather’s farm, and her grandfather explained that chickens have a “pecking order” where different ones get pushed and pecked.(一个周末,Catherine在她祖父的农场里发现了一只小鸡,她的祖父解释说,鸡有一个啄食顺序,不同的鸡会被推搡和啄食。)”
3. 根据原文第六段““Oh, what a poor little guy!” Catherine picked the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the little body. Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates. “I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,” she said with a determined look.(“哦,真是只可怜的小家伙!”Catherine把这只受惊的小鸡抱进怀里,能感觉到它小小的身体里心脏在快速跳动。突然,她想到了Landy—— 那个正被同学们啄咬的女孩。“我要把它带回家,好好照顾它。”她坚定地说。)”可知,Catherine了解情况后,突然想到了被欺负的Landy,于是她决定将小鸡带回家好好照顾。选项A“Feeling sorry for the chicken, Catherine decided to take it home and care for it, and she suddenly thought of Landy who was “ bullied” like the chicken.(Catherine为这只鸡感到难过,她决定把它带回家照顾它,她突然想起了和这只鸡一样被欺负的Landy。)” 故选A。
4. 根据原文第七段“Back in school, Catherine told the cool kids about the chicken. “It’s looking healthy,” she said proudly. “It’s bigger and its feathers are growing. Even the cat likes it. She carries it around, and...” Everyone was impressed by Catherine’s story of her lovely chicken, laughter spreading around the classroom.(回到学校后,Catherine把小鸡的事告诉了那些酷小孩。“它现在健康多了,”她骄傲地说,“长得更大了,羽毛也长出来了。连我家的猫都喜欢它,总是把它叼在身边,还有……”大家都被Catherine和可爱小鸡的故事打动了,教室里充满了笑声。)”可知,回到学校的Catherine将小鸡的故事分享给同学们,并获得了同学们的好感。选项B“Back at school, Catherine told her classmates about the chicken she cared for; everyone was impressed, and laughter filled the classroom.(回到学校后,Catherine把她养的鸡告诉了同学们;每个人都被打动了,教室里充满了笑声。)”
5. 根据原文第八段“Then Catherine saw Landy alone in a corner. She felt a pang of guilt as she remembered the chicken on the farm, bullied by its peers just like Landy was bullied by her classmates.(这时,Catherine看到Landy独自坐在角落里。她想起了农场里那只被同伴欺负的小鸡,而Landy正遭受着同样的对待,心里一阵愧疚。)”和第九段“But Catherine walked toward Landy, no matter what they said.(无论别人怎么说,Catherine终究走向了Landy。)” D“Seeing Landy alone in a corner, Catherine felt guilty, remembered the bullied chicken, and decided to change by walking towards Landy despite others’ glances.(看到Landy一个人在角落里,Catherine感到内疚,想起了被欺负的鸡,决定不顾别人的目光走向Landy。)”

①意识到:realize/be aware of
