I studied harmony and composition, learned how to play a clarinet (单簧管) and joined the symphony orchestra (交响乐团). I felt as though I was on top of the world, and that ____27____ has never left me.
I’m now fifty-four years old, and a very happy and ____28____ man. As I look at the walls of my small office, I still get a thrill at seeing the records I ____29____, the photos of the famous musicians I was lucky enough to play with, and the praises from many of the finest instrumentalists in the world who I am honored to call my friends.

Jim Thorpe is one of the greatest athletes of all time: He had amazing athletic abilities and was well-known during his lifetime, yet that did not make Thorpe a stranger to adversity (逆境).
Thorpe was an American Indian from Oklahoma who developed his extraordinary athletic skills in his youth through hard labour. It was also in his youth that he learnt to endure hardship brought upon by racial prejudice(种族歧视). Many would say his childhood was not easy. He grew up poor and at age 9, his twin brother passed away. A few years later, he lost both of his parents.
But that did not stop him from doing what he loved and pursuing his dreams. Nothing seemed to stop him, not even stolen shoes. Just hours before Thorpe was going to compete in the 1912 Olympics, somebody stole his shoes. Thorpe improvised (临时拼凑) by getting shoes out of the garbage. The shoes were two different sizes. He wore an extra pair of socks on one foot to even them out.
He still went on to win two gold medals — winning each event he competed in except for one, the javelin(标枪). The javelin was the only event he didn’t win, probably because he had never competed in that event before. It is interesting to note that Thorpe had tried to throw the javelin once before in the Olympic trials(预赛). At the time, he didn’t know that he could throw it with a running start. He threw it standing still and was placed second.
At the Olympics, he also took part in the decathlon(十项全能运动). He finished first in two events, third in four events, and fourth in two more. Thorpe ended up finishing third in the world. He was undoubtedly a dominating force that couldn’t be stopped and just kept on going.
I think Paul Dughi said it best, “It’s hard to imagine now that professional athletes get paid millions of dollars just to wear a particular brand of shoes. For Jim Thorpe, it didn’t matter what kind he wore.”
36. What do we know about Thorpe?
A. He gained athletic skills through easy work. B. His success was no guarantee of a better life.
C. His career brought him both gains and losses. D. He suffered many hardships throughout his life.
37. Why did Thorpe wear more socks on one foot?
A. To prevent the foot from injury. B. To make the shoe fit the foot.
C. To stop the shoe from being stolen. D. To protect old cuts on the foot.
38. What most likely led to Thorpe’s failure to win the javelin?
A. Loss of his own sports shoes. B. A shortage of talent for the sport.
C. Lack of experience in the event. D. A carefree attitude towards the event.
39. Which of the following can best describe Jim Thorpe?
A. Kind and enthusiastic. B. Genuine and creative.
C. Tough and strong-willed. D. Selfless and good-tempered.
40. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain the history of the Olympic Games.
B. To describe the life and achievements of Jim Thorpe.
C. To discuss the problem of racial prejudice in sports.
D To show how to overcome difficulties in life.
C
Progress is something that everyone looks forward to, whether in personal life or in society. It represents our ability to change and improve the way we live. Progress is often linked to better ways of doing things. However, this idea of progress holds true only if we embrace technology and continuously seek more efficient ways of doing things.
Yet, for many people, especially those who long for the “good old days”, progress inevitably comes with sacrifices. With the rise of new technology, efficiency has greatly improved. Communication, for example, has become much more efficient. Today, people can connect with each other instantly, no matter where they are in the world. With just a click of a button, we can talk or even see each other without leaving our homes. Personal visits, where we spend time together in real life, have become less common. With mobile phones and tablets, people often no longer make the effort to visit friends and family in person, even though face-to-face interactions hold unique value in building closer relationships.
Another area where progress brings both benefits and challenges is in mass production. Factories today are much more efficient, thanks to machines and automation. This has allowed goods to be produced in large quantities with greater accuracy than human hands could ever achieve. However, the downside is that this efficiency often comes at the cost of the “personal touch”. Many items that were once handcrafted are now produced in factories. While mass production allows supply to meet demand quickly, it often leads to a decrease in quality. Handcrafted items, for example, are unique and full of character, but mass-produced versions lack individuality and the same level of craftsmanship.
Despite these challenges, it is important not to view progress from a one-sided perspective. In fact, progress has also allowed tradition to survive. Modern technology can help preserve old products and techniques, ensuring that traditional crafts are not lost. Through new technology, many old products can be revived and brought back to their original state.
Ultimately, it is people’s attitude towards progress that determines the influence technology has on society. Technology itself is flexible — it can be used in various ways depending on how we choose to apply it. The greatest challenges of progress come from those who are unwilling to adapt their mindset and embrace new ideas. When we use progress in a way that fits our needs, we can create a new future while still respecting the past.
41. According to Paragraph 1, what is necessary for progress to occur?
A. Rejecting new ideas. B. Holding on to traditional ways.
C. Pursuing comfort over innovation. D. Accepting technology and advances steadily.
42. The examples in Paragraph 2 illustrate____________.
A. efficiency improvements often come with a price
B. technology presents few significant drawbacks
C. the “good old days” offered greater efficiency
D. face-to-face interactions are unnecessary
43. What does the author say about mass production?
A. It has lacked great accuracy. B. It has increased product costs.
C. It has reduced individuality in products. D. It has entirely replaced handcrafted items.
44. What is the author’s view on the relationship between progress and tradition?
A. Progress often destroys tradition. B. Progress can help protect tradition.
C. Progress weakens traditional values. D. Progress and tradition cannot exist together.
45. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Technology must be applied in a fixed manner.
B. Progress should be adapted to meet societal needs.
C. People tend to look back on the past with deep regret.
D. The impact of technology depends on people’s attitude.
When I was in school, the class I dreaded most was my eighth grade art class. The teacher put down my every attempt at completing an assignment. I simply couldn’t produce art the way she wanted it. Luckily, I’d already proven myself in other creative areas. Yet, that art teacher was successful in convincing me that I had no talent for painting, drawing, or anything related to them. Imagine my surprise when I published my nature photography and became a volunteer art teacher!
Unfortunately, my story is all too familiar to many people who come through my workshops and practice. Even more unfortunately, the vast majority of people were so discouraged in childhood that they cut off the creative impulse (冲动) in most areas of their lives. Their teachers, parents, or classmates convinced them they had no talent, so they gave up. The pain of failure was simply too great.
Why have we forgotten creativity is an experience, not a result? Let’s consider why we express creativity in first place. To be creative is to be human. Everything we’ve at our disposal (处理) is the result of someone’s creative expression and willingness to take a risk. Even so, for creativity to flower and feel free of encumbrance (累赘), it needs to be about the joyful moments spent creating, not just about what we’ve to show for those moments. Whatever pattern you need to break, try to make it about the pleasure and not about the outcome.
Therefore, I’d urge you to curb your perfectionism not enthusiasm! Perfectionism is the leading killer of artistic expression. Relax a little and bring back your childlike nature when you create. Children instinctively (本能地) know how to give over to the joy --- until someone teaches them otherwise! Let your creation be whatever it wants to be. See if it can lead you rather than the other way around. Let your unconsciousness come through, and let the expression of yourself be beautiful regardless of how it compares to anything else. After all, it’s yours, and no one but you could create it!
46. What made the author give up his dream of art? (no more than 15 words)
47. What does the third paragraph mainly tell us? (no more than 10 words)
48. Please explain the underlined word “curb” in English. (no more than 5 words)
49. According to the passage, what is necessary for a creative person? (no more than 10 words)
50. Do you think you are more creative as a student? Please give an example. (no more than 25 words)

D. To show how to overcome difficulties in life.
D 37. B 38. C 39. C 40. B

Communication, for example, has become much more efficient. Today, people can connect with each other instantly, no matter where they are in the world. With just a click of a button, we can talk or even see each other without leaving our homes. Personal visits, where we spend time together in real life, have become less common. With mobile phones and tablets, people often no longer make the effort to visit friends and family in person, even though face-to-face interactions hold unique value in building closer relationships.(然而,对许多人来说,尤其是那些渴望“过去的好时光”的人,进步不可避免地伴随着牺牲。 故选A。
根据第三段“While mass production allows supply to meet demand quickly, it often leads to a decrease in quality. Handcrafted items, for example, are unique and full of character, but mass-produced versions lack individuality and the same level of craftsmanship.(虽然大规模生产使供应能够迅速满足需求,但它往往导致质量下降。例如,手工制作的物品是独特的,充满个性,但批量生产的版本缺乏个性和相同的工艺水平)”可知,作者认为,大规模生产降低了产品的个性。故选C。
【44题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“In fact, progress has also allowed tradition to survive. Modern technology can help preserve old products and techniques, ensuring that traditional crafts are not lost. Through new technology, many old products can be revived and brought back to their original state.(事实上,进步也让传统得以延续。现代技术可以帮助保存旧产品和技术,确保传统工艺不会丢失。通过新技术,许多老产品可以起死回生,恢复到原来的状态)”可知,作者认为进步有助于保护传统。故选B。
【45题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Ultimately, it is people’s attitude towards progress that determines the influence technology has on society. Technology itself is flexible — it can be used in various ways depending on how we choose to apply it. The greatest challenges of progress come from those who are unwilling to adapt their mindset and embrace new ideas. When we use progress in a way that fits our needs, we can create a new future while still respecting the past.(最终,是人们对进步的态度决定了技术对社会的影响。技术本身是灵活的——它可以以各种方式使用,这取决于我们如何选择应用它。进步的最大挑战来自于那些不愿意调整自己的心态和接受新想法的人。当我们以符合我们需要的方式利用进步时,我们可以在尊重过去的同时创造新的未来)”可知,最后一段的主旨是技术的影响取决于人们的态度。故选D。
第Ⅱ卷 非选择题(满分25分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据“Yet, that art teacher was successful in convincing me that I had no talent for painting, drawing, or anything related to them.然而,那位美术老师成功地让我相信,我没有绘画以及与它有关的任何东西的天赋。” 可知“His teacher discouraged him and said he had no talent for art” 符合语境。 故填His teacher discouraged him and said he had no talent for art. Or: His teacher convinced him that he had no talent for art.
