In the 1870s London, wealthy (富有的) gentleman Phileas Fogg lived a quiet and well-ordered life. His daily routines (常规) were planned to the second; one of those routines was spending time at a private club. One day, Fogg and the other club members were discussing the size of the world. According to Fogg, modern inventions, such as the railway, had made the world a much smaller place. He believed that a person could travel around the whole world in only 80 days.
Fogg made a bet (打赌) when the fellow members laughed at his idea. He bet that he could return to the club in 80 days after having journeyed around the world. If Fogg lost the bet, he would lose half of his money.
Fogg set off on his journey with his new servant named Passepartout. However, unknown to them, the two were being followed by Detective Fix of Scotland Yard. He believed Fogg was a thief who had stolen money from a bank.
After leaving Egypt and arriving in India, the two found a woman in danger. They saved her and took her along on their journey-her name was Aouda. The three travellers made their way through China, Japan and America, facing many difficulties along the way. Some of them were created by Fix, who didn’t give up his pursuit (追捕) of Fogg.
Once the group made it to New York, they sailed to Ireland and then, finally, England. There Fix finally arrested (逮捕) Fogg—only for it to turn out that the real thief had been caught. But this waste of time cost Fogg greatly. If it had not been for the arrest, Fogg would have made it back to his club in time.
Although Fogg lost the bet and his wealth, Aouda asked to be his wife. Fogg happily agreed. And in another happy turn of events, Passepartout realized that, because of the time difference, the group arrived back a day early! Fogg made it back to his club just in time to win his bet.

Do you want to eat more healthily? Try Food Trainer! It’s an app from the UK. It helps people eat less unhealthy food by playing a game.
In the free game, healthy food always comes in green circles (圆圈) and unhealthy food always comes in red circles. If a user clicks (点击) on a thing in the green circle, he or she will get a point. But clicking on a thing in the red circle will make the user lose a point.
Does this easy game work well? The makers of the app make a study. They work with some scientists from Finland. Together they ask more than 1,200 volunteers (志愿者) to play the game once a day. After a month, the volunteers find changes in their diet. Most of them say they ate unhealthy food three to four times a week in the past. But now, they reduce this to once a week.
Why does the app work so well? It’s because it uses brain training techniques (大脑训练技术). The game makes users’ brains stop when they see junk food. This helps users say no to unhealthy food in their daily lives.

Every year, people in Mouding County (县), Yunnan Province become busy as the coming of the Dragon Boat Festival. There was a traditional custom for local people at this time. The local people put wormwood (艾草) and other herbal medicines (草药) into small bags to make sachets (香囊), and then gave them to relatives and friends to express their wishes for happiness and good luck. The followings are about the traditional sachets.
At every Dragon Boat Festival, people in Mouding County will wear sachets. The sachets used to be shaped like lotus flowers (莲花). Today, sachets have been developed into different shapes, like tiger heads, monkeys and so on.
When making sachets, people first cut the cloth into different shapes. That makes them into bags with flowers and animals on these bags. Then they fill bags with wormwood and other herbal medicines. Finally, they hang bands (带) on the top of the bags and fix red, blue and purple silks at the bottom. When people wear the sachets, they will find some fantastic smells.
In Mouding, people may follow certain rules when wearing sachets during the Dragon Boat Festival. In order to prevent diseases and keep healthy, the old usually wear plant-shaped sachets, such as lotus flowers and apples. These sachets usually stand for happiness and health. The first World Humanoid Robot Games (世界人形机器人运动会) take place from August 14 to 17 in Beijing. There are 280 teams from 16 countries and areas. They take part in 26 events. These games test how well robots can “feel”, “think” and move. One exciting part is the 5-on-5 football games. What can humanoid robots do?
Humanoid robots are already doing many everyday jobs, like saying hello to people in restaurants. In one game, robots have to sort medicines (整理药品). One robot, called Galbot, wins first place. It is already helping to find people the right medicines in a smart pharmacy (药房) in Beijing. By the end of 2025,100 pharmacies across China will use this kind of robot. Is it easy to make humanoid robots?
No, it isn’t. Standing up and running are easy for us, but very hard for robots. They need two important parts- actuators and effectors to do things. Actuators make robots move. Effectors like arms and legs help robots do things with the world around them. Also, their batteries (电池) don’t work for a long time, and sometimes they get too hot.Why do people make robots look like humans?
We can make robots in different shapes. But most things around us, like doors and stairs (楼梯), are made to our size and shape. If the robot looks like us, it can use these things as we do. This way, we don’t need to make big changes to everything. That can save (节省) a lot of money and time.

A.Humanoid robots look the same as humans.
B.We can’t make humanoid robots in different shapes.
C.It’s very easy for humanoid robots to stand up and run.
D.Making humanoid robots can help us save time and money.
Chinese chess is a very old game in China. It has a history of over 2,000 years. People love playing it in parks, at home, or even on the street.
A Chinese chess set has two main parts: a board and 32 pieces. The board is like a big square with many small lines, and it looks like a small battlefield. There are 16 pieces for each player. The pieces have different names, such as General (将), Soldier (兵), Horse and Chariot (车). Each piece moves in a special way. For example, the General can’t leave its small area, the Horse moves like the letter “L”, just like in Western chess.

Of all these animals, students see opossums (负鼠) most often. The small animals sleep in the day, and come out to do activities at night. They always stay in the open air. They only go into classrooms sometimes. But a young opossum often goes to a classroom. It enjoys having classes there and students take many pictures of it.
When wild animals show up in the school, no one is afraid. Students and teachers think the animals are friends. And the animals never hurt people. Workers of the university also work hard to keep the wild animals safe in the school. For the natural world, animals are an important part.

We all need money in order to make a living in the world. Usually our job’s income (收入) is enough for our basic needs. But will it cover emergencies (紧急情况) and those expensive wants? Likely not. And your main job may not be as safe as you would like. Some consider it possible for robots to take over about 40 percent of all jobs in 2026. Enter the side hustle. A good one is surely helpful in dealing with your money; moreover, there are other benefits (好处).

Your main job may pay the bills, but maybe it doesn’t match your passion (热情). Start a side hustle that does. Let’s say you’re a dog lover. You could make money by walking dogs or making dog toys. Or maybe you enjoy photography. Begin a side business taking people’s photos.
Or set up an online store selling cards and notebooks with your photos. Doing something that you’re passionate about is an excellent reason to have a side hustle.
▲
If you’re interested in growing your wealth, you shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket.
Having a side hustle allows you to think of different ways of increasing your income. Since you don’t depend on just one job, you may feel more confident about spending money on an expensive international trip. Or you can invest (投资) more of your money because you have an extra income.
▲
The beauty of a side hustle is that it isn’t a must. You choose to do it. But, like most things, you must put in the effort (努力) to get the benefits. The flexible (灵活的) nature of a side hustle is attractive to many people. You have the freedom to decide how much time you want to spend doing it.

The ocean covers about 71% of our world and is very important in keeping us alive. While the rainforests may be called “the lungs of the planet”, scientists say it’s actually the ocean that provides 50-80% of the oxygen (氧气) we breathe. It also helps control Earth’s climate by moving heat from the equator (赤道) toward the poles (地极) to cool things down.
The ocean itself is very important in the fight against climate change too. It takes in 50 times more carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) than our atmosphere (大气层). But it’s not just the ocean itself—many plants and animals in the ocean hold carbon too.
Perhaps one of the most wonderful ones is the seagrass. Across the world, there are more than 70 kinds of seagrass. It grows in the underwater areas of 159 countries on six continents, covering 300,000 square kilometers. Now, that may be an area the size of Italy, but it’s hardly 0.2% of the seafloor. And this is where the seagrass comes into its own because it takes in 10% of the ocean’s carbon each year, 35 times faster than rainforests. Seagrass builds its leaves and roots using carbon and holds on to it, even after death.
However, such an excellent way to help with climate change is itself under threat (威胁) from climate change, as temperature rise, storms, pollution, the long-term development of coastlines, and over-fishing have all played their roles in its decline (减少).
According to the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP), a seagrass area the size of a football field is destroyed every 30 minutes. Around the world, it is declining at a rate of about 7% a year. Unless we do something, experts say that some seagrasses will disappear for ever by 2050.
Dealing with this problem will take an international effort. Luckily, some efforts have already started, in different places around the world.
1.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.The oxygen B.The planet. C.The rainforest. D.The ocean

A.It takes in carbon dioxide and holds carbon until it dies.
B.It takes in 50 times more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere
C.It takes in 10% of the ocean’s carbon and holds carbon fast.
D.It grows in many underwater places and covers a large area.
3.What is the purpose (目的) of the article?
A.To explain why the area of seagrass is becoming smaller every year.
B.To draw readers’ attention to the pollution in the sea and make a change.
C.To introduce different excellent ways to help with climate change.
D.To tell readers the importance of seagrass and the problem it is facing.
4.What will probably be written next?
A.What some countries have done to stop the decline of seagrass.
B.Introduce the countries where seagrass is disappearing very fast.
C.Describe the results caused by the decline of the seagrass.
D.What scientists and experts think of the decline of the seagrass.

▲

A.A type of hobby that earns money as the main income.
B.A second or part-time job besides your main job.
C.An activity done mostly during free time for fun.
D.A business that possibly pays in times of emergency.
2.Which three of the following subtitles can be put in the blanks in the article?
a. You get out of your comfort zone.

D.It grows in many underwater places and covers a large area.
3.What is the purpose (目的) of the article?
A.To explain why the area of seagrass is becoming smaller every year.
B.To draw readers’ attention to the pollution in the sea and make a change.

D.To tell readers the importance of seagrass and the problem it is facing.
4.What will probably be written next?
