话题1 自然灾害与防范
Passage 1
Earthquakes are one of the most serious natural disasters. 1 It is a good way recommended by emergency management organizations (应急管理组织) in many countries. Remember these following tips, and you may protect yourself and your family.
Drop to your hands and knees under a table or desk.
In the first few seconds after the shaking starts, try to quickly move away from anything that may fall and hurt you. 1 If you’re in a public place, such as a store, do not rush away hurriedly. Get away from glass and walls to find a safe place to take cover. 2 A table or a bed can offer cover from falling things. Get down on your knees and stay under the table until the shaking stops.
3
Heads and necks are the most important as well as the easiest part to get hurt. If you’re in bed during an earthquake, stay there and protect your head and neck with something soft such as thick clothes or soft pillows (枕头). These things are soft enough to protect your head and neck. If there’s nothing helpful, cover your face, head and neck with your hands and arms carefully.
Hold on and keep careful.
Stay until the shaking completely stops. Keep careful even when you get up as aftershocks (余震) can happen at any time after an earthquake. 1
Watch out for broken glass and falling walls. Wear a pair of trainers and put on a pair of long trousers and a shirt. Be careful not to hurt yourself.
A.Cover your head and neck.
B.Keep calm if you’re trapped.
C.You should have a plan during an earthquake.
D.If you’re at home, look for a hard piece of furniture.
E.If an aftershock happens, “drop, cover, and hold on” until it stops.
F.To live during an earthquake, remember “drop, cover, and hold on”.
G.Get low and walk away from any danger such as windows and shelves.
Passage 2
Natural disasters (灾害) are a part of our world. They can cause great harm to people and the environment. 1
Earthquakes happen when the Earth’s crust moves. They can make buildings fall and hurt many people. In 2008, the Wenchuan earthquake in China brought huge losses. 2 We should stay away from windows and heavy things when it happens. If we’re outside, we should stay an open area.
Floods are also common. Heavy rain can cause floods. 3 They can wash away houses and bridges. When a flood comes, we must move to higher places quickly. We should also prepare some food and water in advance.
Typhoons are strong winds with rain. They often come in summer. Typhoons can blow down trees and destroy houses. 4 We need to close windows and stay inside when a typhoon is nearby.
5 We can’t stop them from happening, but we can learn how to protect ourselves. By knowing what to do in different disasters, we can reduce the damage and stay safe.
A.We can use the same way to face different disasters.
B.These floods can cover large areas of land.
C.We should listen to weather reports and be ready for them.
D.So earthquakes are one of the most serious natural disasters.
E.People can’t do anything when natural disasters happen.
F.In short, natural disasters are always around us.
G.However, people can do something when natural disasters happen.
Passage 3
In summer, there are serious floods (洪水) in some places. Floods, just like earthquakes, are dangerous. For example, they can destroy (摧毁) buildings and bridges. Knowing how to protect ourselves when facing floods is necessary. 1
Never try to walk, swim or drive in floods. During the floods, if you are outside, don’t try to walk or swim home or to workplaces. 2 If you are driving your car, stop driving.
Find a safer place to stay. 3 If you are in a car at that time, stay inside. But if the floods are serious and your car is filled with water, get out and stay at the roof of the car.
Keep yourself away from bridges. 4 If you are close to a bridge, you may be hurt by the broken bridge. Besides, power lines are dangerous, too.
5 There are some things that are bad for your health in it. Once you drink it, you may get ill. Instead, you should drink boiled water.
A.Don’t drink flood water.
B.Because the water moves fast, you will be knocked down (冲倒).
C.The floods may knock down the bridges.
D.Move to the highest floor if you are in a tall building.
E.Here are some useful suggestions.
F.We should help people in floods.
G.Then move to the top of it.
Passage 4
A tornado (龙卷风) is a kind of strong storm with air which moves in a circle quickly. They can move over 200 miles per hour and cause a lot of damage (损坏). As they move across the land, they can easily pick up cars, trucks, and even houses, and then throw them very far. 1
A safe place could be a basement (地下室) or the lowest floor. If you are in a home without a basement, try to find a first-floor bathroom or a small room without windows in the middle of your house. 2
But there are some people who actually want to get close to tomadoes. They are scientists who want to learn more about tornadoes. 3 They use special tools to measure what is happening in and around a tornado. One special tool is called a tomado probe (探测仪). Inside the tornado probe, there are sensors (传感器) to measure wind speed, temperature, pressure, and direction. 4
To be able to get these measurements, the scientists have to get a tornado probe near or into a tornado. Scientists will try to guess where a tornado will go next. Then they drive to that location and put down the probe. If they do not guess correctly, they pick up their probe and try another place. 5 Then they take all of the measurements from the probe and use them to predict where future tornadoes may form and travel. And they can give people some warning to keep away from a dangerous tornado.
A.One of the best ways to do this is to get as close as possible to the tornado.
B.If they are right, the tornado will go near or even right over the probe.
C.Scientists have no ways to predict the time of tornado.
D.Some probes even have cameras, so the scientists can see and understand what it’s like to be in a tornado.
E.It is important to find a safe place if a tornado comes.
F.There are also some other difficulties that we cannot think of.
G.You should curl up (蜷缩) into a ball and cover your head and neck with your hands.
话题2 野生动物
Passage 1
You are what you eat, as a saying goes. This is really true for the giant panda. What pandas eat has a big influence on many different parts of their lives.
1 This is because pandas mostly eat bamboo, which is very poor in nutrition (营养) and difficult to take in. Since 99% of a panda’s food is bamboo, so pandas also have really small babies because of their food. Baby pandas are born helpless and tiny. 2 No other mammal’s (哺乳动物) babies are born so much smaller than their mother or father. This, too, baby pandas grow quickly. 3
The black and white fur of pandas may help them to hide (隐蔽). Once again, we can look at a panda’s food to help understand the reason. In winter, they can’t change their fur quickly enough to match their background like other animals can. 4
In the past, pandas lived in and traveled across large places and faced lots of predators (捕食者). So, their black and white fur was very important for them to keep safe.
1 The main danger to pandas is not from predators, but rather from less bamboo, more human activities and climate change. The good news is that pandas are no longer known as endangered (脆弱的).
A.However, things are a little different today.
B.One-year-old pandas can be about 45kg heavy.
C.Pandas are still one of the endangered animals in the world.
D.They are just 140g, about 1/1000 the size of their mother.
E.For one, pandas have to spend more than half a day eating.
F.The baby pandas can’t see clearly at birth and sleep all day.
G.So being black and white helps them hide in both snow and the dark.
Passage 2
Orangutans are mainly living in trees. They have long arms and fingers (手指) to help them climb in the rainforest. They live on fruit. 1 Over 300 different kinds of food have been found in their diet.
2 They use tools to catch insects. Orangutans can remember the rainforest where they live. This helps them know which trees have nice fruit. What’s more, they build a sleeping place each night with leaves.
Orangutans face many problems because of human activities. Young orangutans are sometimes caught and sold as pets. Orangutans are also hunted for food. 3 Scientists believe there are less than 7,000 Sumatran orangutans left in the rainforests.
The biggest problem facing orangutans is that the rainforest has been destroyed. 4 It is reported that 80% of their forest home has been lost in the last 20 years. Wildlife organizations are working hard to help protect the rainforests. 5

Why should we save the sharks?
1 Sharks eat other species (物种), but few species eat them. As sharks die off, the number of the animals that sharks eat will increase. This, in turn, means that the number of the creatures that those animals eat will become smaller. So how can you help save the sharks?
2
Pet foods, energy drinks, leather products can also be made from sh ark parts. And shark meat is sold around the world. Most sharks killed worldwide are hunted for their fins (鳍), which are used to make shark fin soup. The process is unfriendly. Fishermen cut the shark’s fins off and then drop the shark back into the water, still alive. Sharks breathe by swimming. 3
Eat only sustainably (可持续的) caught seafood.
If you eat seafood, make sure it comes from fisheries (渔场) that care for the sea. 1 They can teach you about these important animals and give more advice on how to keep them alive. They also need your support to continue protecting these important creatures.
A.Don’t use shark products.
B.Don’t order shark fin soup.
C.So a shark that can’t swim will die.
D.Many organizations try to protect sharks.
E.The killing of sharks is a problem for the whole planet.

More than 40% of people find DIY projects more difficult and expensive than they thought. Bailey Carson, a home care expert, said, “ 1 It’s important to think about why you want to DIY, and what you hope to get out of it.
