M:Color plays an essential role in our life. For example, color is used to communicate life-saving information. To the driver of a vehicle, the green color means go and the red color means stop. You should always pull up when the traffic lights turn red.⑰Besides, colors can irritate your eyes, increase your appetite, or even change your mood.⑱ A delicious meal with appropriate colors can certainly make your mouth water.Good colors also help us in many other ways.Statistics show that in a sports competition a team wearing red has a higher chance of winning.Of course, it is largely due to the psychology of wearing red.Luck and ability can be more important.⑲ For animals,

colors reflect their environment and their characteristics. For instance, a male peacock has its tail feathers of bright colors to win the attention of female peacocks.People often think that a rainbow is the most colorful, but for our artists, all they need are three colors, namely, red, blue and yellow. They are called the primary colors, colors that can not be made by mixing others together. And our artists can mix them together to create any color in the rainbow and hundreds of other shades in making art.⑳

B
A couple carved out a life on a small rock island, among the seabirds. The Bass Rock is a small volcanic island just off the east coast of Scotland. Remarkable in the Scottish imagination for its landform and location in the Fifth of Forth near Edinburgh, the island has had a thin and intermittent (断断续续的) human population across the centuries. Its most notable and sustained inhabitants are the northern gannets (塘鹅) that have lived on the island throughout recorded history. With a population of roughly 150,000 birds, their home is the largest in the world.
单元过关检测
The English naturalist June Nelson is one of the few people who have lived on the Bass Rock. For three years in the early 1960s, she and her late husband, the ornithologist Bryan Nelson, who was researching gannets at the University of Oxford, made the island their temporary home. Living and working out of a small church, they devoted themselves to observing and recording the behaviours and ecology of the birds. The then-newly-married had little contact with the outside world, but led a happy life together.

In the short documentary Life on the Rocks, Nelson revisits her full and focused years on the Bass Rock. Combining cinematic black-and-white shots of the island with music, the UK director George Pretty creates a vivid account of Nelson's unforgettable time there, as well as her emotional return. Mining Nelson's memories and old photographs, the film explores how the husband-and-wife team found happiness on this unique patch of Earth, and among its many birds.
单元过关检测
But, more than just a fondness for the past, Nelson communicates an urgency to protect the plummeting (暴跌) global seabird population, which has decreased by 70% in her lifetime, asking “What right do we have to deprive (剥夺) future generations of this wonderful place?”

C
Over the years, movies and books have used tornadoes to sweep their characters off to magical lands, to destroy entire cities, or to defeat a superhero's dangerous super villain (恶棍). All of these tornadoes have one thing in common: They are incredibly powerful. They can have wind speeds over 300 miles per hour (mph), grow over a mile wide, and travel over 50 miles. They are incredibly dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.
单元过关检测
Scientists can't go inside tornadoes, which means that they are extremely hard to research. As a result, we know surprisingly little about them. In order to tell how powerful a tornado is, scientists look at how much destruction it causes. Scientists then rank the tornado on the Enhanced Fujita Scale (级别) (EF-Scale), which ranges from EF0 to EF5. For example, a tornado that only damages trees but doesn't significantly damage buildings would be rated EF0 with wind speeds between 65 and 85 mph. A tornado that blows away buildings and tears up sidewalks, on the other hand, would be rated EF5 with wind speeds over 200 mph.
单元过关检测
The most powerful tornado in United States history occurred near Oklahoma City in 1999. It had wind speeds over 310 mph, the highest wind speed ever recorded on Earth. A tornado with wind speeds that high can not only pick up and throw automobiles, but also knock over trains and tear up roadways.
Luckily for anyone living in an area that experiences the occasional tornadoes, they usually only last one to ten minutes. More powerful tornadoes can last over an hour in the right conditions, but they are very rare.
单元过关检测
If you find yourself experiencing a tornado, find a safe place inside, like an interior hall, basement or closet. Stay away from windows and heavy objects that could fall on you, and lie on your stomach with your hands protecting the back of your head. Having a tornado emergency plan is extremely important as tornadoes can appear very quickly. Make sure to listen to the radio or television to stay updated on serious weather patterns in your area.

When a famous singer released (发行) her 2011 single Someone Like You, this bittersweet song is popular with millions worldwide. More than a decade later, it remains one of her most popular songs. Her artistry, as well as that of many others who have mastered the art of making listeners feel moved with slow and emotional beats, has a way of managing the emotional pain of heartbreak and loss.

Listening to favorite songs could also reduce people's feelings of pain, according to a new study published in the journal Frontiers in Pain Research. And the most effective pain relievers were found to be sad songs detailing bittersweet and emotional experiences.

“It doesn't take the place of medicine when you have a headache, but music can help reduce your pain,” said Patrick Stroman, a professor at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. He didn't join in the study. “Unlike other medications,” he noted, “there is no side effect or risk in listening to music (just keep the volume at a reasonable level).”

The small study invited 63 young adults to bring one of their favorite songs. The researchers also had the young adults pick one of seven songs that the team considered relaxing and were unfamiliar to the study participants. All the while, the researchers stuck a hot object—similar to the pain of a boiling hot teacup on the participants' skin—to their left inner forearms. When rating their experiences, people were more likely to report feeling less pain when listening to their favorite songs compared with hearing the unfamiliar relaxing songs.

With millions of songs available, one person's favorite song is likely not the same as another. After interviewing the participants about the song they brought and their rating of pain, the researchers found people who listened to bittersweet and moving songs felt less pain than when they listened to songs with calming or cheerful themes (主题).

“It's a very cool result,” said lead study author Darius Valevicius, a doctoral student of neurosciences at the University of Montreal. “I think it's why I myself and probably many people choose to listen to bittersweet or even spiritual music.”

Innovation experts advise people to “think outside the box” to improve creativity and adaptability. 36.__________________________
How does one think outside it?
A.So, what is the box?
36.A 解析:上文提到“跳出方框思考”这个概念,下文提出如何在它(即“方框”)之外思考,空处应承上启下,提问方框的含义,A项符合语境。

Originally, the box was a reference to the nine-dot (点) problem. 37._______________________________________________________ Connect all the dots in a nine-dot form using no more than four straight lines and without lifting your pen or pencil from the page. If you cannot think of any solution to this puzzle (谜题), you're not alone. The nine equally-spaced dots give the impression of a square or box.
C.The goal of this classic puzzle is simple.
37.C 解析:上文提到方框最初源于九点谜题,下文介绍这个谜题的具体任务,空处应承上启下,总述谜题的目标,C项符合语境。

F.To solve the puzzle, you must let go of that assumption.

Innovative thinking emphasizes change. Taking different viewpoints, thinking non-traditionally—these involve breaking from the norm. By definition, this sort of thinking is more original. All the specialists told us what would happen during my five-year-old sister's treatment. The doctors talked about the potential side effects of the drugs that might occur over the next two years of treatment.

When our parents told our sister she had cancer, her biggest concern was losing her hair. “Will all my hair really fall out? Will people make fun of me?” she asked, her voice filled with worry.
“Don't worry,” I later told her in secret. “When you lose your hair, I'll shave mine with a razor (剃刀) and we'll both be bald (秃头的). We'll walk down the street proudly with our bald heads held high. We'll swim, go to parks and play at the beach with our bald heads.” “Promise?” she asked. “Promise,” I replied, thinking it was a small sacrifice (牺牲) as long as it could cheer her and help her recover.

The days and weeks of treatment began to affect her little body. As the doctors had warned, she began to lose her hair. At first, I found some on her clothes and towels. A short time later, I found her hair on the backs of the sofas and chairs she'd been on. Before long, there were masses of hair on her pillow every morning as she awoke from her restless sleep. A few days later, she was finally completely bald.

Her head was very smooth and soft as I held her. It reminded me of that wonderful time when I held her in my arms and was amazed at how lucky I was to have such a beautiful and healthy baby sister. Her bald head was beautiful, but it also showed the signs of her battle with cancer. One afternoon at home, I thought it was time to shave my head.

However, it was then that I began seriously worrying about something. How ugly would I become when I was bald? Would my parents—who always encouraged us to maintain a certain image—scold (责备) me for having my head shaved? Would people, especially my classmates, make fun of me?

I was looking at myself in the mirror when my sister approached. Her big, innocent eyes searched my face, filled with both curiosity and a hint of admiration. “Are you really going to do it?” she asked softly, her voice breaking the silence. I took a deep breath, feeling a mix of fear and determination. “Yes, I am,” I replied, forcing a smile. She clapped her hands and said, “We'll be twins!” The first few strokes felt strange, but with each pass of the razor, I felt lighter, as if I were shedding not just my hair, but also my fears and insecurities.

“It's beautiful. Please also help shave our heads,” our parents smiled. Their approval warmed my heart, and I could see the love in their eyes as they watched this moment unfold. As we stood in front of the mirror, I realized that our bald heads symbolized more than just a physical change; they represented our unity and strength in facing her battle against cancer. We were not just a family; we were warriors, ready to take on whatever challenges lay ahead, side by side.
