Robert Winston stepped outside a convenience store with his morning coffee and spotted a homeless man, Paul Krupa, sitting with his back against the building. A small dog sat in his lap. Winston, a vet (兽医) at an animal hospital, noticed its injured fur and skin. He approached the man and offered to bring medication for the dog's skin, a gift the man readily accepted.

“I remember returning a week later, and the hair was coming back and the rash (皮疹) was gone,” Winston told The Modesto Bee. Paul said his dog was finally sleeping at night again because it was no longer feeling restless for its illness. “‘And you know,’ he said, ‘I'm sleeping at night.’ He started to cry, and that got me touched too,” Winston says.
Winston was addicted. “When you do good deeds, there is something you get in return that feels much larger. I knew I wanted to keep doing it,” he told medium.com.

Today, Winston, 50, has his own practice in town, yet he still finds time for street pets. He's helped roughly 400 animals since 2011.
There's a great need for his kind of help. About 25 percent of Modesto's homeless population owns a pet, but there are few healthcare options available to them. To fill that gap, Winston can often be found wandering dark streets and underpasses (地下通道), anywhere he thinks the homeless might be camped out. Winston pays for almost all of it out of his own pocket. For those expensive procedures, he set up a GoFundMe account to help cover treatment costs. “I don't ever want to have to turn anybody away,” he explains.

The tomato leaf miner moth (飞蛾) originates from Peru and is common throughout South America. However, it has spread through Europe since 2007 and has become one of the largest pests in Mediterranean regions, threatening food supplies.Experts around the world are currently struggling with new ways to battle the moth, but it has developed resistance to pesticides (杀虫剂), leaving farmers helpless to stop the damage.A new study from the University of Portsmouth has shown that the answer may lie in the tropical tent web spider.
单元过关检测
Scientists carried out laboratory tests and found that the spiders banded together to form webs that easily caught the flying insects, which they then ate.Dr Lena Grinsted, the lead author of the study, said, “The tropical tent web spiders operate in large groups and can create giant joined-up webs capable of catching insects in the air. This could potentially lead to a reduction of reliance on chemical pesticides, resulting in less pollution in soils, waterways and food chains in the future.”
单元过关检测
Crop damage is also caused by the larvae (幼虫), which directly attack the tomato fruit, making the crop ugly and thus unmarketable.Larvae live inside the leaf until they begin the process of turning into a moth, making them difficult to control. However, scientists expect that targeting the adult moth population will reduce the number of eggs being laid.In addition, the spiders build the biggest webs during the summer, which can benefit the tomato planting and growing season in May and June.
单元过关检测
The researchers said the study would “open doors for the use of group-living spiders to control agricultural pests” but warned that more work was needed to check the spiders did not change the ecology of regions.Dr Grinsted added, “Future studies are needed to investigate whether the spiders may negatively impact crop pollination (授粉) by also catching bees and other key pollinators.”

Many of us hold on to little complaints that may have come from an argument, a misunderstanding, the way we were raised, or some other painful events. Stubbornly, we wait for someone else to reach out to us—believing this is the only way we can forgive or rekindle a friendship or family relationship.
单元过关检测
A friend of mine recently told me that she hadn't spoken to her son in almost three years. She said that she and her son had had a disagreement about his wife and that she wouldn't speak to him again unless he called first. When I suggested that she be the one to reach out, she said, “I can't do that. He's the one who should apologize.” After a little gentle encouragement, however, she did decide to be the first one to reach out. To her amazement, her son was grateful for her willingness to call and offered an apology of his own. As is usually the case, when someone takes the chance and reaches out, everyone wins.

Whenever we hold on to our anger, we turn “small stuff (问题)” into really “big stuff” in our minds. We start to believe that our positions are more important than our happiness. They are not. If you want to be a more peaceful person you must understand that being right is almost never more important than allowing yourself to be happy. The way to be happy is to let go, and reach out. Let other people be right. This doesn't mean that you're wrong. Everything will be fine. You'll experience the peace of letting go, as well as the joy of letting others be right.
单元过关检测
You'll also notice that, as you reach out and let others be “right”, they will become less defensive and more loving toward you. They might even reach back. But, if for some reason they don't, that's okay too. You'll have the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your part to create a more loving world, and certainly you'll be more peaceful yourself.

Dear Tracy,
I'm glad to share one of my most unforgettable travel experiences.
It was during the national holiday last year that I visited Gulangyu Island in Xiamen. I arrived there in the morning together with my parents. I chose the best place, right by where Mom grew her zucchini (密生西葫芦). I planted the pumpkin seed (种子) and I watered it. When the baby plant came up, I fed and protected it carefully. And it grew. The first flower opened and the next day, a baby pumpkin grew at the bottom of the flower.
Over the next few weeks, the little pumpkin got bigger. I carefully took off each new flower after it opened so that the plant would grow only one big pumpkin, instead of many little ones. It needed all of its power to make the biggest pumpkin ever.

When summer got hot, I gave my pumpkin more water and love. To avoid the zucchini plants being sad, I gave the zucchini water, too.
My pumpkin became orange as it became ready. And still it grew. It's the biggest pumpkin ever. Bright as the late summer sun. Round as a planet, so my friend Kam called it Planet Pumpkin. The harvest fair was the next day, and Planet Pumpkin was going to win. Mom cut my pumpkin from the vine (藤蔓) so I could place it in my truck, but it's too big to lift by myself. Mom helped. So did Kam.
