Many people around me make a difference to the world on a daily basis—being kind in unexpected ways and sharing the generosity of their lives with others.I, like many of them, volunteer some of my time in order to give back just a little of what I am so blessed to have.I volunteered to go to Guatemala with eyeglass team from International Relief Teams—an organization I have supported in other ways for many years.
Our team went to a small town in Guatemala. We set up our tables and packages of pre-made glasses in the dirty courtyard of a clinic, put up the Snellen chart (an eye chart) on a wall, and began our work.
Young and old people came from many of the surrounding towns. Most had never received an eye exam before. They waited for hours patiently in the sun, never complaining. If we could help them out, their thankfulness for a simple pair of glasses was overwhelming. Some only left with eye drops or sunglasses, and even these people expressed their gratitude sincerely. All of them were very generous with blessings and smiles. We heard over and over from people who knew their eyes needed help but they had not gone to a doctor because it was too expensive, or had not got the glasses they needed for the same reason.
It's so easy to overlook how much difference the volunteers' small actions can make to the lives of people in Guatemala. The glasses in my country are so easily available, but to people in Guatemala, they are not.
As those who could give them a hand, we watched their lives change. What a gift sight is—and what a difference being able to see clearly makes! Here, we'd like you to join us and take action to help people in need. And every day, those actions change lives. No action is too small; no action is ever wasted.

(2025·常州溧阳期中)Ballet originated in the Italian Renaissance (文艺复兴) courts of the 15th century. In important celebrations, dancing masters taught the steps to the well-behaved noblemen and noblewomen. In the end, all people could participate in dancing. The early ballet intended to bring the nobility together to smooth out political differences and disagreements.
In the 16th century, Catherine de Medici—an Italian noblewoman, wife of King Henry Ⅱ of France and a great supporter of the art—began to fund ballet in the French court.A century later King Louis ⅩⅣ helped to popularize the art form by coming up with basic rules and ways of practicing ballet. His goal was to agree on techniques, styles and methods so artists everywhere would approach it the same way. This unifying of the key ideas and steps was meant to take ballet to a higher level as a serious profession.
By 1661, a dance academy had opened in Paris, and in 1681 ballet moved from the courts to the stage. The French opera Le Triomphe de l'Amour combined ballet elements, creating a long-standing opera-ballet tradition in France.By the mid-1700s, French ballet master Jean Georges Noverre believed that ballet could stand on its own as an art form. His notion—that ballet should contain dramatic movements that should reveal the relationships between characters—introduced the ballet d'action, a dramatic style of ballet that clearly communicates emotion and plots.
The popularity of ballet grew quickly in Russia, and, during the latter half of the 19th century Russian choreographers (编舞) and composers took it to new heights.Marius Petipa's The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake, by Petipa and Lev Ivanov, represent classical ballet in its grandest form. The Russian system for training ballet dancers, known as the Vaganova method, is famous for helping dancers achieve the highest technical standards. In addition, ballet became closely tied to Russian cultural identity over centuries. It survives as a source of national pride in Russia's cultural heritage. So a large number of great dancers, choreographers and composers are from Russia.

The British may be made fun of for their weather-related small talk, but a recent study suggests that just four minutes of chatting can divulge aspects of our personalities and influence subsequent (后来的) social interactions.
Researchers divided 338 participants into two groups before they met in person and asked each participant to complete a personality and IQ test. Within each group, participants were paired and conversed (交谈) for 4 minutes or had no contact with their partners. Participants were then required to infer aspects of their partners' personalities and predict whether they would act cooperatively or selfishly in two money-based strategy games.
The results showed that those who chatted scored higher in predicting their partners' IQ and personality test responses, but were also more likely to project their own personality characteristics onto their partners. “Our research suggests that in just a few minutes of small talk, we begin to form a mental model of the person we're talking to,” says Professor Sgroi.
Participants then met and played with their conversation partners or, in the case of the no-contact group, met and played with strangers. The researchers then gave each participant £20 and asked them to contribute to a joint pot shared with their partners—an experiment called the public goods game.
Researchers say people who chatted with their partners were more likely to correctly predict their contributions to the pot. In addition, those who chatted beforehand contributed 30% more than those who did not. The results also depended on the relationships they established through small talk.
Georgie Nightingall, founder of Trigger Conversations, says that small talk is a great way to encourage cooperation in the workplace. “People are bad at small talk because it feels like there is no end to it. It can feel awkward and pointless once you have all the information you need. While asking questions helps build relationships with people, people will be happy to have a chat if you show that you care about others. You'd better be sincere and considerate.”
