In just 100 years, the world has changed completely. Amazing discoveries were made in medicine, communications and transport, not to mention our knowledge of the world and space. 1 2 3 4 10 Although it is impossible to choose the most important discovery, it is possible to single out a few pioneers of the 20<m></m> century. Here are some of them. One of the 20<m></m> century's premier scientists was Albert Einstein. In the summer of 1905, this outspoken young man was rocking his one-year-old baby when he was suddenly inspired. Subsequently, “E=mc<m></m>” was born. It showed how a small piece of mass could produce an unbelievable amount of energy. 1 2 3 4 In 1928, another important finding was made by biologist Alexander Fleming. Before he went on holiday, Fleming left a dish of bacteria in his laboratory. When he came back, he noticed something strange. He double-checked and saw a blue mould in the dish around which the bacteria had been destroyed. This blue mould was in fact the natural form of penicillin, which Fleming perceived could be used to kill bacteria. A few years later, penicillin was being mass-produced and helping to save the lives of millions. 1 2 3 4 During World War Ⅱ, when Fleming's discovery was first helping to cure people, the US Navy was looking for ways of improving the accuracy of their missiles. The navy turned to Eckert, an engineer, and Mauchly, a physicist, to deal with the problem and produce a machine to do the job in a joint effort. Although they only finished after the war in 1946, it did not matter. This huge machine was the world's first computer, but it was nothing like our computers today. 1 2 3 4 These pioneers of the 20<m></m> century were all dedicated to improving the quality of human life on Earth. Human life on this planet has been transformed into a “global village”, with all the different countries linked in the chain of common interests. There is no doubt about it. Without the breakthroughs of these pioneers in science and technology, whether lucky or planned, the world as we know it today would be a completely different place. 1 2 3 4 1.Why would people have a real dilemma, if they had to choose the single most important discovery of the 20<m></m> century?( ) A.Because different people have different ideas and it's difficult to choose. B.Because there were no great discoveries in the 20<m></m> century. C.Because there was no common standard to judge. D.Because so many amazing discoveries were made in medicine, communications, transport and many other fields, and they all had a great influence on the world. 1 2 3 4 15 2.How did Einstein think of the equation “E=mc<m></m>”?( ) A.When he was at work. B.His assistant helped him. C.When he was rocking his one-year-old baby,he was inspired. D.His dream inspired him. 3.Whose discovery can be used to save people's lives according to the passage?( ) A.Alexander Fleming's. B.The US Navy's. C.Albert Einstein's. D.Eckert and Mauchly's. 1 2 3 4 16 4.What's the original purpose of designing the first computer?( ) A.To do some difficult experiments. B.To improve the accuracy of the missiles. C.To help people make mathematics calculations. D.To replace the missiles, becoming a new weapon. 阅读理解 A (2025·湖湘教育三新探索协作体联考)Our clothes do a lot for us. They keep us warm in the winter or cool while we're working out. They let us dress to impress or comfortably relax on the couch. But some researchers think our clothes could be doing even more. Those scientists and engineers are dreaming up new ways to make clothes safer, more comfortable and convenient. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 18 Some ideas for new clothing aim to protect people from harm. A new fabric coating could absorb some chemical weapons. That coating is made from a metal-organic framework that breaks down harmful mixtures. It could offer people in war-torn countries protection. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Not all advanced clothes are designed to save lives. Some could just make clothes more comfortable. Fabric integrated with nanowires (纳米线) could reflect your body heat back onto your skin. Electric current running through those metal threads could provide warmth, too. This may be especially useful for hikers, soldiers or others working in super cold conditions. On the flip side, another new fabric traps very little body heat. Tiny holes in this material let infrared waves (红外波) pass through. Those waves carry heat away from your body to keep you cool. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Some researchers have dreamt up wholly new uses for clothing—like turning wearers into walking power outlets. Flexible solar panels sewn into fabric could soak up the sun to recharge phones or other devices on the go. And some types of fabric could harvest energy directly from a wearer's motion. While some fabrics help charge devices, others could serve as devices themselves. In one recent experiment, researchers sewed conductive thread into a T-shirt. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 This turned the shirt into a device that could send signals to a smartphone. Another team threaded fabric with magnetized copper and silver to write data into fabrics. Such data-packed fabric could be used as a hands-free key or form of ID. Many of these ideas have not yet left the lab, but inventors hope these and other innovations could someday let you get more from your wardrobe. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 23 1.What is the function of the coating in paragraph 2?( ) A.To give off harmful chemicals. B.To absorb energy from chemicals. C.To make clothes more comfortable. Nowadays, it's more fulfilling to post hole-in-the-wall restaurants you have found on social media and be asked for addresses in the comment section. Hole-in-the-wall restaurants are small restaurants that are not highly decorated but have many delicious local dishes. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 28 Though they have long served as the “canteen” of their surrounding neighborhoods, these hole-in-the-wall restaurants have gradually retreated from the busy streets as more high-rise structures are built. Now, hole-in-the-wall restaurants are often found in the corners of small lanes and alleys in different parts of a city and the most popular ones usually have a history of more than 10 years and are run as family businesses. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Many hole-in-the-wall restaurant lovers desire a more natural lifestyle, with some viewing their dining habits as a protest against consumerism. A native of Wuhan surnamed Tian appreciates that these humble diners cook food with care. In contrast, some internet-famous restaurants only use pre-made food or simply stir-fry their dishes, she complained. This results in the foods having similar tastes. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 A university student surnamed Zhou tried a hole-in-the-wall restaurant with her boyfriend after friends recommended it to her. She ordered three dishes, which only cost 64 yuan. “The food tastes good, and it's cheap,” she said. Still, there are risks for both owners and fans of hole-in-the-wall restaurants. A professor at Hubei University of Economics, said that due to limitations in funds and management as well as lack of food safety awareness, there could be hygiene and food security issues at these locations. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 To solve these problems, the professor suggested that the government provide training and more support for these restaurants. These restaurants should also improve their quality of service. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 5.What do we know about the hole-in-the-wall restaurants?( ) A.They are often run as family businesses in the back lanes and alleys. D.Lack of safety awareness. 根据倒数第二段中的“A professor...food security issues at these locations.” 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 35 7.What is the author's attitude to the hole-in-the-wall restaurants?( ) A.Approving. B.Skeptical. C.Neutral. D.Indifferent. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 36 8.In which column do we probably find the passage?( ) A.Economy. B.Cuisine. C.Security. D.Management. 通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“It seems that the era of fancy...hole-in-the-wall restaurant has the best food.” Health and fitness help a person live a good and healthy life.
