At the Nobel Prize Lecture on 7 December, 2015, an 84-year-old Chinese woman walked slowly on to the stage. She began to talk about the life-saving drug, artemisinin, which she had discovered with the help of her team in the 1970s.The woman was Tu Youyou, the first Chinese female scientist to be awarded a Nobel Prize for her work.A scientist who was on the Nobel Prize

Committee called Hans Forssberg explained that “the discovery of artemisinin has led to the development of new drugs which have saved the lives of millions”. When thanking the Committee for the honour, Tu Youyou said, “This is not only an honour for myself, but also recognition of and encouragement for all scientists in China.”
In 1969, Tu Youyou was chosen to establish a team to find a cure for malaria—a disease that killed millions of people every year. After hundreds of failed experiments, they eventually came across a promising chemical. It worked well in experiments on animals, but

they had to know if it was safe for humans. Tu Youyou bravely volunteered to be the first human subject when they were ready to start testing and the rest of her team followed her. The test was a success. The medicine they discovered, artemisinin, has now become the world's most effective drug for fighting malaria.

Even though Tu Youyou is not interested in fame, she has become a scientist whose work is internationally renowned. In 2019, she was selected by the BBC as one of the most influential figures of science in the 20<m></m> century along with Albert Einstein and Alan Mathison Turing. Tu Youyou was noted for her bravery in being a scientist during a difficult time for science in China, her ability to use old wisdom and new methods to achieve her goals and the fact

that her work bridged the Eastern and Western worlds, saving millions of lives. Today Tu Youyou continues to conduct research despite her age. According to Tu Youyou, “From our research experience in discovering artemisinin, we learnt the wisdom behind both Chinese and Western medicine. There is great potential for future advances if these two kinds of wisdom can be fully integrated”.

(2025·杭州北斗联盟期中)“When I was young, I told my mother that I would go to China to learn kung fu one day. She didn't believe it at the time. When I got there, I immediately called her and said, ‘Mom, guess where I am. I'm at the Shaolin Temple!’,” says Max Yollando, a young man from Côte d'Ivoire, sharing his attachment for Chinese culture.
Yollando is also known as Yanming, the Chinese name he was given by his teacher at the Shaolin Temple, where the “Shaolin kung

At the time, Yollando was a student at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny University in Abidjan. Motivated by his passion for Chinese culture, he signed up at the Confucius Institute to study Chinese. In late 2016, he had the opportunity to visit the temple in Henan Province on a three-month exchange. This experience defined his close relationship with traditional Chinese culture.

After returning to Côte d'Ivoire, Yollando continued to practice Chinese and study traditional Chinese culture. In July 2017, he returned to the Shaolin Temple again and remained there for six years. His years at the temple reading, exercising, practicing kung fu and meditation (冥想) greatly changed him, and allowed him to better understand and appreciate traditional Chinese culture.

He says the most impressive things he noticed that rooted in Chinese culture are the love of work, respect and recognition. At the end of 2022, when he completed his studies at the temple, he began working at a Shaolin cultural center in Zambia. The first of its kind in Africa, the center is home to 30 orphans (孤儿), who are taught Chinese language and traditional Chinese culture, including kung fu, as part of the course.

(2025·湖南多校期中联考)In the past few decades, Ray Kurzweil has made more than 100 forecasts about the future, of which 86% have proven to be accurate. Among his famous predictions is his daring claim that by 2029, artificial intelligence (AI) will pass the Turing test and achieve human-level intelligence. Perhaps his most significant prediction is that the singularity (奇点) will be reached by 2045, marking the point at which human intelligence fully integrates with AI and significantly improves our mental capabilities.

Kurzweil's positive view on the singularity stands in sharp opposition to the warnings from several famous people who have voiced concerns about the potential risks of superintelligent AI. These figures fear that AI could become uncontrollable and threaten humanity's survival. Kurzweil, however, sees AI not as an existential risk, but as a powerful tool for improving human abilities. He argues that AI won't operate as an independent force but will function within a network designed to work alongside humans, improving rather than replacing our abilities.

Kurzweil supports his viewpoint with existing technologies, like brain implants used to treat Parkinson's disease (帕金森病), suggesting that the integration process is already in progress. He envisions a future where, by the 2030s, individuals will connect their neocortex—the part of the brain responsible for advanced thinking—to the cloud, improving our memory, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

Looking ahead to 2045, Kurzweil believes that the singularity will further enable humanity to address complex global challenges and unlock new levels of intellectual and creative potential. Rather than viewing this transformation as a threat, Kurzweil considers it a valuable opportunity for human progress, as AI will empower individuals to meet their physical and intellectual needs. He argues that this will lead to a society characterized by remarkable growth and achievement.
