Passage 2
(24-25学年七年级上·双菱中学·期末)
People use languages to communicate. Any language has its ways to express people’s minds. One of the ways in common is the use of idioms. An idiom is a group of words. It has a special meaning that is different from the usual meaning. For example, under the weather is an idiom meaning ill. So when people say “I’m under the weather.”, they are saying that they’ re not feeling well. Another example, in all weathers means in all kinds of weather. So, “There are homeless people sleeping on the streets in all weathers tells us that homeless people sleep on the streets no matter whether it is cold or hot.
Different languages may have different ways to make idioms. For people who are learning a foreign language, idioms could cause misunderstandings and bring them endless headaches. On the other hand, if things are done right, idioms can also be a fun way of looking into a new culture and understanding how the people think and talk.
Metaphor is often used in idioms. Let’s read the following two examples:
·It makes my blood boil (煮沸) when people litter.
·The night was dark and quiet: my blood ran cold when I heard a strange noise outside at dark night.
In neither situation above, our blood can reach the point so high or so low in temperature: Yet, with the situations the two sentences created, it is not difficult to work out the unhappy feelings of really angry in the first example and ________ in the second.
Of course, not all idioms are this easy to understand. When we come to idioms of a foreign language, a good dictionary of idioms is always suggested.
36.This passage tells us something about ________ in the English language.
A.grammar B.writing C.reading D.idioms

40.What is the writer’s advice when you come to an expression like“under the weather”?
A.We should look it up in a good idiom dictionary.
B.We should try to express our minds with it.
C.We should find an interesting way to learn it.
D.We should create situations to guess its meaning.

It’s common that a Japanese-American bows on the phone—but only in Japanese. Behaviors and manners can become so routine that they appear even when there’s no need for them. Those who are bilingual (双语的) and bi-cultural know first-hand that how we behave can depend on what language we are speaking. Scientists have shown that who you are in the moment can depend on the language you are using at that time.
This is because when you have an experience, the language you are using becomes associated with it. For bilingual people, this means certain memories are more closely associated with one language than the other—a phenomenon called “language-dependent memory”. For example, a childhood memory is more likely to be remembered when the language spoken during that childhood event is spoken again.
How we think and feel can thus change depending on what language we are using. For example, people who are bilingual have an intensified stress response when listening to the words of scolding in a native language. This may be, in part, because our early memories associated with learning a “bad” word or being scolded by our parents happened in our native language.
Because emotions play a key role in how we make decisions, people are often more sensible when making choices in the less emotional foreign language. Language can even influence our decisions. When asked whether they would be willing to give up one person’s life to save a group, people who speak more than one language are much more likely to say “yes” when answering in a foreign language. The unpleasant feelings that can prevent us from making difficult choices are reduced when we’re using a non-native language.
The language we speak has an influence on how we think, feel, and even behave. In a way, knowing different languages can provide people with a variety of views through which to see the world.
32.Why is the example of a Japanese-American mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To show the influence of culture is huge.
B.To show bowing is Japanese people’s routine.
C.To show Japanese people are polite on the phone.
D.To show one’s use of language affects one’s behavior.
33.What does the underlined word “intensified” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Worse. B.Better. C.Increased. D.Limited.
34.When a person speaks a foreign language, he is likely to ________.
A.make a sound decision B.prevent himself from danger
C.be influenced by other people D.have difficulty making decisions
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.You Are Actually What You Are Speaking.
B.Native Languages Make People Speak More.
C.Different Languages Have Different Influences.
D.Speak Your Native Language in Other Countries.

①Can trees talk? Some scientists find that trees can really “talk”!
②Some trees use chemicals (化学物质) to talk. When insects attack them, they gives out chemicals from the leaves. This is like a call for help, “I’m being attacked!” Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others can call birds to come to kill the insects. Scientists hope to learn more about this, so that we can use it to keep insects away from crops like rice.
③More surprisingly, trees also use sound to talk. People can’t hear these sounds, but trees are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Some trees make noises when there is not enough water.
④Most surprisingly of all, trees have an “Internet” to give out and get information in a big forest. Scientists call it the “Wood Wide Web” (树联网). The fungi (真菌) underground help build up the “Wood Wide Web” among the roots of different trees. It is just like the Internet we use. Using the “Wood Wide Web”, trees can share information and even food with each other. However, it may also be harmful. Some trees may use it to take too much food from others, or give out chemicals to hurt other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to build a “Great Wall” to help stop these.

Most of you may think of clams (河蚌) as part of a big meal. But these little things can do a more important job: testing (检测) the cleanness of people’s drinking water!
The main water station in Poland (波兰), gives water for millions of people there. They make eight clams test the drinking water. Because clams have an amazing sense of finding water pollution. If the water is not clean enough, they close their shells (壳). So, the water station got the clams and connected their shells to a computer system. When four or more clams close their shells at the same time, an alarm (警报) will make a sound.
Clams will get used to (习惯) dirty water in several months, so they only work for three months. People will get new clams to take over the job. The water station said this could work well to test water quality (质量).

37.If your brother breaks your computer, you can say to him, “________”.
A.I’m under the weather B.I’m there in all weathers
C.You’ve made my blood boil D.My blood runs cold
38.What does the underlined word “Metaphor” mean in Chinese?
A.拟人 B.排比 C.比喻 D.双关
39.Which of the following words can be put in ________?
A.very sad B.very afraid C.very excited D.very proud
40.What is the writer’s advice when you come to an expression like“under the weather”?
A.We should look it up in a good idiom dictionary.
B.We should try to express our minds with it.
C.We should find an interesting way to learn it.
D.We should create situations to guess its meaning.
【答案】36.D 37.C 38.C 39.B 40.A

38.词义猜测题。根据“Metaphor is often used in idioms”以及“In neither situation above, our blood can reach the point so high or so low in temperature”可知在上述两种情况下,我们的血液温度都不会达到如此高或如此低的程度,所以是运用了比喻的手法,故划线部分意为“比喻”。故选C。
39.推理判断题。根据“The night was dark and quiet: my blood ran cold when I heard a strange noise outside at dark night.”可知夜色深沉而宁静,当在深夜听到外面有奇怪的声音时,会感到很害怕,故此处填入“very afraid”。故选B。

主题02 人与自我——生活与学习
(24-25学年七年级上·小外·期末)

Passage 1
(24-25学年七年级上·河西区·期末)
⑤Trees talk to each other in different ways. Now, scientists are learning more about these ways and maybe one day we will be able to “talk” with trees ourselves.
