Ffh. Ffh. Ffh! It was not just the empty nest (鸟巢) of a pewee bird as Amy had found the last five days. Amy ran home through the woods.
“Mum!” she shouted. “I see birds. Two. In cave (洞穴). Beautiful!”
Mum smiled. Birds! Always birds! From the moment Amy woke up in the morning to the moment she closed her eyes at night, she thought only of birds.
Amy climbed straight to her attic room—her museum, she called it. Every shelf, every spare inch of floor, was covered with nests, bird models and natural science books. The walls were covered with pencil and crayon drawings of many different kinds of birds, all signed “Amy in the woods.”
“Are those the same birds who built the nest last year? Will they return to the cave next spring?” Amy always wondered. “I will study my cave birds. I will draw them just as they are.” Amy made up her mind.
In a week, the birds were used to her. They were busy building their nest as Amy watched and drew with her pencils. Soon the dried brown nest became a soft green bed.
Amy watched as two baby birds came out. She watched as the young birds flew for the first time. She began to feel a part of this small family.
When the days grew shorter and the autumn air began to bite, Amy knew the birds would leave soon. But would they come back? She had to know! In bed that night, she formed a plan.
The next day, when the mother and father birds were away from the nest, she tied something to one leg of each baby bird. A week later, the birds were gone…
The days grew longer again. One morning, Amy heard a bird call, “Fee-bee! Fee-bee!”
She ran to the cave. Watching the way the birds flew in and out of the cave, Amy knew her friends came back. But where were last year’s babies? Did they return too? She began to search the woods near the cave, listening for their call.
Inside a little house, she found two birds building a nest. One wore a silver ring around its leg. Up the small river, under a bridge, she found two more nesting birds. And one wore a silver ring around its leg.
Amy smiled and called, “Fee-bee! Fee-bee!”

Smartphones are getting boring. The new models are either a bit faster or have better cameras, but they are basically no different from the ones already in our pockets. This is why scientists are hoping, and working for something new, something that will change our lives just as greatly as smartphones do. At the moment, the next invention might be smart glasses.
Just imagine. Instead of having to pick up your phone and look at the screen, all of the information you need simply appears just in front of you, in your glasses. Satellite navigation (导航) directions would appear right there on the road. And your smart glasses could guide you to the right shelf in the supermarket.
Smart glasses could also be used in industry. They could show engineers the instructions they need to fix things more quickly. A doctor could carry out a difficult operation (手术), guided in real time by someone on the other side of the world.
This may sound impossible. But most of the technologies to invent them are already there. For example, one key technology is called AR, which can make digital 3D object appear as if they are part of the real world. We’ve used it a lot on our video calls. Similarly, huge progress has been made in spatial audio (空间音频). This is when a sound is made to give it a sense of place, like what you hear in an empty room. Some high-end earphones (高端耳机) can already do that. Future glasses will of course need to recognize (识别) your voice to do tasks. This technology has been widely used in our daily life.
So, why aren’t we all wearing smart glasses yet? So far, no one has invented a good way to send images (图像) of our world onto glasses. However, with the rapid development of technology, smart glasses could arrive much sooner than we think.
23.Why does the writer mention smartphones in Paragraph 1?
A.To start a story. B.To explain an idea.
C.To introduce a topic. D.To discuss a problem.
24.What are Paragraphs 2 and 3 mainly about?
A.When smart glasses might be made. B.Where smart glasses could be used.
C.Why smart glasses should be changed. D.How smart glasses would give directions.
25.Which of the following technologies needs to be improved to invent smart glasses?
A.Making spatial audio. B.Recognizing voices.
C.Creating digital 3D objects. D.Sending images onto glasses.
26.How might the writer feel about the future of smart glasses?
A.Bored. B.Satisfied. C.Confident. D.Uncertain.

In the past, the Tala Desert in Qinghai was described by the saying, “When the wind blows, stones roll and no grass grows.” Covering more than 600 square kilometers, 98.5% of this empty land has turned into desert. Almost nothing could live there. Yet, because it receives plenty of sunlight, this “lifeless place” was chosen as the site for one of China’s biggest solar power stations.
In 2012, the first sets of solar panels (太阳能板) were set up. They were only meant to collect sunlight to produce electricity, but something unexpected happened for the environment. The panels worked like large sunshades. They reduced direct sunlight, slowed down wind erosion (侵蚀), and helped the soil keep its moisture. In just a few years, plant coverage increased from less than 2% to 80%.
However, new problems soon arose. The rapidly growing grass started to block sunlight from reaching the panels. This reduced electricity production and raised the risk of fires. Using chemical weed killers damaged the weak ecosystem, and asking people to cut the grass cost millions of yuan every year. Then, a local herder (牧民) half-jokingly suggested, “Why not let sheep eat the grass?”
In 2016, 600 Tibetan sheep officially “started working.” They ate the grass under the panels, keeping it short and improving the soil with their waste. In return, the sheep grew healthier. The herders voluntarily joined the project and even formed a small group to take turns managing the areas, making sure the grass and sheep stay in balance. This created a lasting system of “solar power above, sheep below.” The power station saved on cleaning costs, herders made more money, and the land became healthier.
Today, the Tala Desert now supplies over 100 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually and the number of sheep has increased to over 20,000, creating millions of yuan in value every year. The tale of the “photovoltaic sheep” (光伏羊) shows that when humans cooperate with nature instead of fighting it, even the toughest desert can glow with the hope of sustainable development (可持续发展).
27.What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the problem in the desert. B.To provide the background for the solar project.
C.To show the view of the Tala Desert. D.To explain how solar energy works.
28.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.The fast-growing grass helped increase electricity production.
B.A local scientist first thought of letting sheep eat the grass.
C.Using chemical weed killers was useful and helpful.
D.Asking people to cut grass cost a great deal of money.
29.What are the achievements of the whole project?
①It generates tons of clean electricity.
②It stopped the wind from blowing in the desert.
③It greatly improved the local environment.
④It helps the local herders to raise sheep.
A.①②④ B.①③④ C.②③④ D.①②③
30.What can we infer from the text?
A.Local herders supported the project and took part in it actively.
B.The project will be widely used in all deserts around China.
C.The main goal of the solar power station was to improve the environment.
D.The success of the “photovoltaic sheep” project only happened by chance.

Ffh. Ffh.

How to Speak More Easily in Class
Recently, our school has done a survey about how to speak more easily in class. Here are the results.
45% of students believe pre-class preparation is very helpful, as it lets them get familiar with topics in advance. 33% favor small-group practice first—chatting with a few classmates feels less scary. 22% think self-encouragement works, and telling themselves “I can do it” boosts courage.
I quite agree with pre-class preparation: first, list key points of the lesson at home; second, draft simple sentences about the content to avoid freezing up; third, a 5-minute pre-class review makes a big difference. This builds confidence for speaking up. Additionally, starting with small groups reduces stress—share ideas with peers first, then move to speaking in front of the whole class.
