Cook my kids good dishes, and take them to photo shoots. But compared with Dick Hoyt, I suck. Eighty-five times he's pushed his disabled son, Rick, in marathons. This love story began in Winchester, many years ago, when Rick was strangled (缠住) by the umbilical cord (脐带) during birth, leaving him brain-damaged and unable to control his limbs (四肢). “He'll be a vegetable the rest of his life,” doctors told Dick and his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old. “Put him in an institution.” But the Hoyts weren't buying it. They noticed the way Rick's eyes followed them around the room. When Rick was 11, they took him to the engineering department at Tufts University. Equipped with a computer, Rick was finally able to communicate. After a high school classmate was paralyzed (使瘫痪) in an accident, and the school organized a charity run for him, Rick said, “Dad, I want to do that.” How was Dick, a man who never ran more than a mile at a time, going to push his son five miles? Still, he tried. That day changed Rick's life. “Dad,” he typed, “when we were running, it felt like I wasn't disabled anymore!” That sentence changed Dick's life. He tried his best to give Rick that feeling as often as he could. They even decided to try marathons. “No way,” Dick was told by a race official. They weren't quite a single runner, and they weren't quite a wheelchair competitor. For a few years, Dick and Rick joined the massive field and ran anyway. In 1983, they ran another marathon so fast that they made the qualifying time for the Boston Marathon the following year.“My dad is the Father of the Century,” Rick typed. Both the father and the son passed away, but the story of them will inspire generations to come. 24.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 mean? A. The Hoyts had no money for their son's treatment. B. The Hoyts couldn't afford any institution. C. The Hoyts couldn't deal with the situation. D. The Hoyts didn't believe it was true. 25.What's discussed in the third paragraph? A. Why Rick became paralyzed. B. How Rick started running. C. Why running changed Rick's life. D. How Rick communicated with others. 26.Why were Dick and Rick able to join the 1984 Boston Marathon? A. Because they got support from a charity. B. Because they ran a marathon very fast. C. Because they met a kind race official. D. Because they had become very famous in the process. 27.What can be learned from the passage? A. Love knows no limits. B. Take things as they come. C. Many hands make light work. D. There is no fire without smoke. [答案] 24.D 25.B 26.B 27.A [解析] 24. 根据上文“‘He'll be a vegetable the rest of his life,’ doctors told Dick and his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old. ‘Put him in an institution.’” 根据第四段中的“In 1983, they ran another marathon so fast that they made the qualifying time for the Boston Marathon the following year.” C Replacing just five minutes a day of sedentary (久坐不动的) activities or low-intensity movements with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity could help lower blood pressure, a new study finds. Small changes in your daily routine—like sitting, walking, or standing a bit less, and instead doing activities to really get your heart rate up—are enough to make a difference, the research suggests. “Our findings suggest that, for most people, exercise is the key to reducing blood pressure, rather than less strenuous forms of movement such as walking,” lead study author Joanna Blodgett, PhD, of the Institute of Sport, Exercise, and Health at University College London, said in a statement. “The good news is that whatever your physical ability, it doesn't take long to have a positive effect on blood pressure,” Dr. Blodgett said. You don't necessarily have to hit the gym, Blodgett added. You can improve your blood pressure with all types of moderate-to-vigorous exercise, like taking stairs or cycling. Researchers examined data from nearly 15,000 volunteers who had their blood pressure taken and wore activity trackers for 24 hours to record all of their movements, including sleep and sedentary time. Overall, participants spent an average of about 7.1 hours sleeping, 10.7 hours sitting or being sedentary, 3.2 hours standing, 2.7 hours walking, and just 18 minutes participating in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity like cycling, jogging, or climbing stairs. This small change reduced systolic blood pressure (收缩压)—the “top” number that indicates how much pressure blood exerts against artery (动脉) walls when the heart beats—by an average of 0.68 mmHg. It also lowered diastolic blood pressure (舒张压)—the “bottom” number that indicates the pressure blood exerts against artery walls when the heart rests between beats—by an average of 0.54 mmHg, according to findings published in the journal Circulation. While five minutes extra of exercise is the minimum amount needed to see any change in blood pressure, scientists also found that it might not take more than an extra 10 or 20 minutes a day of exercise for people to see clinically meaningful improvements in blood pressure with the possibility to affect their overall health. 28.What does the underlined word “strenuous” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Demanding. B. Interesting. C. Relaxing. D. Rewarding. 29.How did the researchers get their findings? A. By surveying the public. B. By interviewing volunteers. C. By comparing health records. D. By studying trackers and blood pressure. 30.What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. The importance of overall health. B. The need for more rest and sleep. C. The effect of small exercise changes. D. The relationship between exercise and health. 31.What is the purpose of writing this passage? A. To promote a specific exercise routine. B. To present a new finding about exercise. C. To warn readers of the dangers of inactivity. D. To persuade readers to exercise for 5 minutes. [答案] 28.A 29.D 30.C 31.B [解析] 28. 根据第三段中的“Our findings...rather than less strenuous forms of movement such as walking”可知,运动是降低血压的关键,而不是像散步这样不那么费力的活动。 根据第五段中的“Researchers examined data from nearly 15,000 volunteers...including sleep and sedentary time.” 根据最后一段中的“This small change reduced systolic blood pressure”和“It also lowered diastolic blood pressure”以及“While five minutes extra of exercise is the minimum amount...with the possibility to affect their overall health.” D In the ancient walled city of Sana'a, mud (泥) skyscrapers rise high into the sky. The towering structures are built entirely out of earth and decorated with amazing geometric patterns. The local mud architecture is so unique that the city has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Even though the buildings in Sana'a are thousands of years old, the ancient structures are still inhabited today and most remain private houses. It is easy to see why these mud buildings have not lost their appeal—they are well-insulated (隔热的), sustainable and extremely adaptable for modern use.“It is the architecture of the future,” says Damluji, co-founder of the Mud Brick Architecture Foundation. Architects around the world are reviving (复兴) raw-earth construction as they seek to construct sustainable buildings that can survive extreme weather events such as flash floods and intense heat. Could this ancient form of architecture influence the design of our future homes? The construction industry accounts for 38% of global carbon dioxide emissions. The building sector has an important role to play if the world is to meet the goal of reaching net zero by 2050.Concrete, a common modern construction material, has a huge carbon footprint. Replacing concrete with less polluting materials is important to achieving our climate goals, scientists warn. The ancient material, mud, could be the perfect sustainable replacement for concrete, according to Damluji. Constructing with mud has a very low impact on the environment and the material itself is fully recyclable. She says, “If you want to pull down a wall or change the design, you can recycle all the materials.” An added benefit is that mud buildings are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. This reduces the need for air conditioning units, which consume large amounts of electricity and contain refrigerants (制冷剂) that make up greenhouse gas emissions. Mud structures are also incredibly strong and resistant to extreme weather, such as heatwaves, floods and droughts, which scientists say will become more frequent and intense as temperatures continue to rise. Therefore, people who wish to live in a modern, comfortable home should consider one made of mud. Overall, it makes for highly advanced as well as sustainable design. 32.Which of the following is TRUE about mud materials according to the passage? A. They can reduce the chance of extreme weather events. B. They can be ideal for sustainable construction of the future. C. They might produce a lot of greenhouse gas emissions. D. They might cause substantial temperature changes. 33.What can be inferred from the passage? A. Mud might be an important solution to the climate crisis. B. Rebuilding mud construction would take great efforts. C. Mud has become architects' favourite building material. D. The mud buildings in Sana'a are no longer suitable to live in. 34.What's the author's attitude towards raw-earth construction in the building industry? A. Cautious. B. Indifferent. C. Critical. D. Supportive. 35.What might be the best title of the passage? A. Historic Cities Mark Human Civilization B. Construction Industry Threatens Climate Goals C. Modern Architecture Survives Extreme Weather D. Ancient Material Makes for Future House Designs [答案] 32.B 33.A 34.D 35.D [解析] 32. 根据第二段中的“It is easy to see why these mud buildings...Mud Brick Architecture Foundation.” 根据第五段中的“The ancient material...the material itself is fully recyclable.”及“An added benefit...as temperatures continue to rise.” All parents know that young children are always energetic, eager to run, jump and play. Turning that natural energy into competitive sports can help keep kids active and healthy as they grow. This news was like a sudden lightning in the sky, showing her a new path she had never thought about before. It made her very curious about her real family and where she came from. At first, the idea of being adopted was very hard for Paula to understand, like trying to climb a big mountain all by herself. But it also made her want to learn more about who she was. Each step she took was like going on a new adventure, sometimes making her feel scared but also excited. She was looking for her family's stories, and her wish to find her roots (根) was like a bright flashlight, helping her see the way. Paula decided to take a DNA test, which felt like using a special key to open a secret door to her family's past. When the test showed that she was connected to a distant cousin, it made her very happy, like finding a treasure on a treasure hunt. But when there were no more clues (线索) to follow, Paula felt very sad, as if a big cloud had covered the sun and made everything dark. She felt like crying because she didn't know what to do next. But even when things looked bad, Paula didn't give up. She became stronger and more determined, like a superhero who keeps going even when it's hard. She thought that if she kept trying, she would find the answers she wanted. Paula had a best friend named Heather and they had a very strong friendship, like two trees that grow close together and support each other. They had been friends for a long time and had shared many happy and difficult moments. As they grew older, people noticed that they looked a lot alike and sometimes joked that they could be sisters. They always laughed at this, but they didn't know that there might be some truth in what people were saying. The biggest surprise in Paula's life happened.   This big news changed everything for Paula and Heather.   [答案] One possible version: The biggest surprise in Paula's life happened. It turned out that her best friend Heather was actually her half-sister. This amazing discovery was made by comparing their DNA and getting help from a cousin who knew how to understand the test results. It was like a joke they used to laugh at turned into the truth. It felt like a movie, but it was really happening to them. They made sure it was true by looking deeply into their family's past. With the help of family members and the important DNA proof, they knew for sure that Heather and Paula were sisters and not just friends. This big news changed everything for Paula and Heather. Knowing they were sisters made their friendship even more special. They were so happy to find out they were family and celebrated how their lives had come together in such an amazing way. Paula's story, from being shocked by learning she was adopted to being happy about finding a sister, shows that life can be full of surprises. Their story also shows us that sometimes the people we choose to love can become just as important as our family by blood. Text one, how did you enjoy your travel to italy?
