Today I'm joined by a former student of our school, Lisa Osborne. Lisa graduated from our school last June and is about to go to college in New York. Lisa, thank you for coming to share your suggestions for high school with us. Lisa:Hi, everybody. I'm very glad to be back. I feel as if high school was only yesterday! Interviewer:So what helped when you first started high school? Lisa:Orientation Day was really helpful. It's a fantastic opportunity for new students to get to know the school and the other students. I even made some new friends! Just keep an open mind and take part in as much as possible. Interviewer:That's sound advice for sure. But how did you deal with new challenges, like starting a new course? Lisa:I had a chemistry test right at the end of the first week. I was frightened at the sight of the test paper. But then I figured I'd better just go all out and see what happens. If you fail, no problem—next time you can fail better! Interviewer:So, hold your head up, then. But life is not always easy. You must have had some moments when you were disappointed. If so, how did you deal with them? Lisa:As a member of the school volleyball team, I wasn't selected for the end-of-year competition. At first I was really sad, but later I realized that I joined the team for the love of the sport. It wasn't just about winning. So I kept working hard to support my teammates during our training. There's always a way to be part of something you love, isn't there? Interviewer:Yes, I totally agree. Is there anything else in particular that you'd like to share with us? Lisa:Looking back on my high school life, the most important advice I'd give is these wonderful words from the writer Maya Angelou. She said, “Be a rainbow in somebody else's cloud.” So, give your friends a hand when they need it. And this will make you feel good, too. Interviewer:Neat!Well, thanks again for coming to speak to us, Lisa. And good luck with college! Lisa:Thank you. 1.What is the passage mainly about? A. Lisa's going to college. B. Scientists have discovered that seating preference not only shows students' personalities, but has a great influence on their school performance. Generally speaking, students show different attitudes depending on where they sit. Based on the research, scientists have developed a funnel-like (像漏斗的) model of “learning zones” to see the relationship between seating and active learning. In this model, the mouth of the funnel(A) is the best position for learning. Students in this front area prove to be the most active learners. They show a greater desire (渴求) for learning, which leads them to focus better and take a more active part than the rest of the class. Those in the neck of the funnel(B) don't pay the same close attention, but they ask a lot of questions, partly because of the added confidence they feel from being in a safe zone, with others around them. Less desirable is the area “outside the funnel”(C,D), which refers to the side and the back rows, where students take a less active part in classroom activities and find it hard to focus their attention, falling asleep at times. Studies about learning zones suggest that a change in traditional seating plans can benefit students. In fact, a growing number of teachers have begun less traditional seating plans, such as “U-Type”.There are no side and back areas, so teachers can expect their students to take part in activities more actively and increase student-teacher interaction (互动). 1.According to scientists, what influences students' learning greatly? A. The number of students. B. The time of class. C. Seating positions. D. The size of the classroom. 2.Which of the following is the most proper area for learning? A. Area A. B. Area B. C. Area C. D. Area D. 3.It turns out that students sitting in Area B _ _ _ _ . A. sometimes fall asleep B. feel safe and confident C. seldom ask their teachers questions D. try to avoid looking directly at the teacher 4.Where is the passage probably taken from? A. A life newspaper. B. An advertisement. C. An education magazine. D. A science textbook. [答案] 1.C 2.A 3.B 4.C [解析] 1. 根据第一段中的“Scientists have discovered...school performance.” 根据第二段中的“In this model, the mouth of the funnel(A) is the best position for learning.” 根据第二段中的“Those in the neck of the funnel(B)...others around them.” [(2025·福建厦门三中期中)]B Researchers from the University of Western Australia recently studied 3,000 middle and high school students. Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work of these “fly-in, fly-out” parents might impact the health of their children. A higher percentage of teenagers who experienced the long work absence of a parent had emotional(情感的) or behavioral problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research finding high percentages of emotional problems in teenagers who often returned to an empty house after school or whose parents seldom had a chat with them. Findings also suggest that parents don't have to be home all the time to be present in their children's lives, but it obviously helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted (盆栽的) plant. Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. They enjoy each other's company without the need to talk. Another friend usually accepts his daughter's invitation to work or read nearby while she sits and does her homework. Perhaps, that, at least for some families, is the best way for teenagers and their parents to stay close. In fact, many years of research suggest that children use their parents as a safe base from which to explore the world. Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents' movements from room to room, even while going on with their own activities. Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don't want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom. A new school year is at hand, so as parents, we could offer our teenagers a “potted flower” as a gift, whose quiet and steady (稳定的) presence will give them a great day. 5.What did the study find about the 618 teens? A. They had more dinners with their parents. B. They were more prepared to help themselves. C. They showed more dislike for traditional working hours. D. They were more likely to have trouble with their feelings. 6.What is the author's attitude to her two friends' behavior? A. She doubts them. B. She supports them. C. She is worried about them. D. She cares little about them. 7.What does earlier research say about young kids according to paragraph 5? A. They want their parents' presence. B. They want their parents to be safe. C. They want more freedom from parents. D. They show more interest in new activities. 8.Which can be a suitable title for the passage? A. Teens Want Potted Plant Parents B. Your Kids Still Need Conversation C. Quiet Families Raise Healthier Teenagers D. Parents Know Little About Today's Teenagers [答案] 5.D 6.B 7.A 8.A [解析] 5. 根据第一段中的“Among them were 618 teenagers...work.”和第二段中的“A higher percentage of teenagers...emotional or behavioral problems”可知,这些青少年更有可能在情感方面有问题。 6. 根据第四段中的“Perhaps, that, at least for...to stay close.” 根据第五段中的“In fact, many years of...to explore the world.”和“Perhaps our teens...their parents are still around.” Ⅱ.七选五 [(2025·辽宁东北育才学校期中)]It is generally assumed that there's nothing in the world that can compare with a mother's love. 1.   Keeping in contact with your mother is not just good for Mom, but it turns out that maintaining a close relationship with your mother is good for you at any age and stage of life. It reduces stress. A study showed that talking to your mother regularly can reduce stress. 2.   Besides, a strong relationship with your mother can help you feel less worried. Most adults say that their connection with their mother has had a positive influence on them. It increases your confidence. 3.   Low confidence can make everything feel more challenging. But keeping in touch with your mother, who is your biggest fan and supporter, can remind you how important it is to believe in yourself. A healthy relationship with your mother can positively impact how you see yourself. It tells the truth.
