In my sixth grade, I attended a summer camp. My parents had never sent a child to camp before, so they thought that there would be no need for any cash (现金). However, on the third day of camping, a small gift shop opened at the campsite. I went in with several other campers and looked around. When I saw the beautiful things on the shelves, I reached into my pocket but found nothing. So I walked out.
I felt sorry for myself and didn’t want to talk. But after I took only a few steps out of the shop, a boy called out to me. We had just met for the first time at camp, but he offered me a few dollars so I could purchase something. I thanked him, went back in, and bought a little toy bear. I kept that toy bear on my bed for years.
Now, I teach at a local primary school. Last week, I went on a field trip with my students. Our last activity of the trip was having dinner at a restaurant with a snack stand. After dinner, everyone rushed to buy ice cream or candy except one boy. He sat on the stairs. I then learned that he had no money for snacks. This reminded me of my own camping experience. I handed him some cash. He gave me a shy smile and headed to the stand.
I felt a sense of joy—just as my camp friend had helped me years before, I could do the same for someone else.

Our planet looks like a big round ball. But it’s not “The Earth is not round,” said Dr. Gladys West. “And we had to figure out the shape.” As a mathematician, West worked hard to study the shape of the Earth. Her work changed history. She helped create GPS. That’s the technology we use in phones, cars and ships. Many people call West the “Founding Mother of GPS”.
West was born in Virginia in 1930. She grew up working on a farm. Her talent for learning offered her another path. West finished first in her high school. Then she studied maths at Virginia State University.
After university, West spent several years teaching maths and science at schools in Virginia. Later, she worked as a mathematician for the U.S. Navy. In the 1950s, few women—especially black women—held such jobs, but West succeeded.
Scientists like Dr Sarah Stamps at Virginia Tech University still use West’s work. “My research depends on her ideas,” said Stamps. “That’s why she is a hero of mine.”
West was famous for her ability to solve difficult maths problems by hand. “She did complex calculations quickly,” Stamps said. “She herself was the computer.”
In 1978, West became the project manager of the Seasat satellite. That satellite studied the oceans from space. She later developed a program. That let people make a model of the Earth’s exact shape. As a result, the GPS system became very accurate (精确的).
Even after retiring in 1998, West went on learning. In 2018, West was inducted (正式入选) into the U.S. Air Force Space and missile Pioneers Hall of Fame. She is the only black woman honored in that way.
16. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. West was not good at maths at first.
B. West’s work played a role in creating GPS.
C. GPS is only used in phones and cars now.
D. West was the first person to study the Earth’s shape.
17. What does the underlined sentence suggest about West?
A. She was not interested in ordinary jobs.
B. She preferred working with men in the navy.
C. She was the only black woman in her field.
D. She faced more challenges but achieved success.
18. Why does Dr Sarah Stamps think of West as her hero?
A. Because West is more famous than her.
B. Because West taught her how to use computers.
C. Because her research is based on West’s ideas.
D. Because West was good at solving maths problems.
19. Which is the right order according to the passage?
a. West taught maths in some schools in Virginia.
b. West became the project manager of the Seasat satellite.
c. West began working as a mathematician for the U. S. Navy.
d. West joined the U. S. Air Force Space and missile Pioneers Hall of Fame.
e. West developed a program which helped make a model of the Earth’s exact shape.

Everyone knows magic tricks are fun, but not enough people realize that math can be as well. Here is one of the most popular tricks to show you how amazing math can be.
Firstly, pick a friend with good math skills. To play the trick, your friend needs to know how to add numbers and do subtraction (减法).
Then, write down 1089 on a piece of paper without showing anyone.
Thirdly, ask your friend to write down a number with three different digits (数位). Tell him not to show you the number. Make sure the three digits cannot be the same. For example, he could pick 481.
Next, let your friend write down the number backwards. For example, 481 backwards is 184.
After that, make it into a subtraction problem. Now your friend has two numbers. Get him to subtract the smaller one from the larger one. In our example, the result should be 481-184=297. If the result has only two digits, ask your friend to add a zero at the beginning.
Next step, reverse this number as well. Ask your friend to take his answer and reverse the digits order again. If he added the zero at the beginning, remind him to include it as part of the number. For example, the reverse of 297 is 792.
Here comes the most exciting part. As the final calculation, get your friend to add the last two numbers and write down the result. In our example, 792+297=1089.
Finally, tell everyone that you know the last number your friend wrote down. Show others the piece of paper with the 1089 you’ve written down earlier.
In the trick, the last number will always be 1089. If your friend has a different answer, he did not follow instructions, or he made a mistake.
21. To play the trick, how many steps should you follow?
A. 5. B. 6. C. 7. D. 8.
22. If your friend got “99” after doing the subtraction, what did he need to do?
A. Go on with the other steps. B. Change the number into 099.
C. Tell others the number he got. D. Choose another number to start again.
23. What does the underlined part “reverse this number” in Paragraph 7 mean?
A. get the number subtracted
B. turn the number upside down
C. write down the number backwards
D. change the order of the number as you like
24. What can we learn about the trick from the passage?
A. Anyone can play the trick.
B. The final number can’t always be 1089.
C. It is the most popular trick.
D. The numbers should be reversed twice.
25. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. The 481 trick B. The 2 numbers trick
C. The 1089 trick D. The subtraction trick
【答案】21. D 22. B 23. C 24. D 25. C
根据文中内容可知,文章表示步骤的连接词“Firstly→Then→Thirdly→Next→After that→Next step→Here comes the most exciting part→Finally”可知,这个魔术共8个步骤。故选D。
【22题详解】
细节理解题。根据“If the result has only two digits, ask your friend to add a zero at the beginning”可知,若减法结果是两位数“99”,需在开头加0,变成三位数“099”。故选B。
【23题详解】
词句猜测题。根据“Next, let your friend write down the number backwards. For example, 481 backwards is 184.”以及“Next step, reverse this number as well. Ask your friend to take his answer and reverse the digits order again...For example, the reverse of 297 is 792.”可知,倒着写数字,如:481写为184,下一步让朋友也这样写下数字,如:297写为792。因此“reverse this number”意为“将数字倒写”。故选C。
【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据“Next, let your friend write down the number backwards. For example, 481 backwards is 184.”以及“In our example, the result should be 481-184=297. If the result has only two digits, ask your friend to add a zero at the beginning. Next step, reverse this number as well.”

Be a Helper at Home
Last week, our school did a survey among 1,000 students on how often we help with the housework. The pie chart shows the results: 30% of students often do housework, 50% hardly ever do it, and 20% never do it.
I often help with housework at home, like cleaning my room, washing dishes, and folding clothes. In my opinion, doing housework is beneficial in many ways. Firstly, it helps develop our independence. We can’t rely on others forever, so learning to take care of ourselves through housework is important. Secondly, it’s a great way to share the burden with our parents. They work hard all day, and doing housework can let them have a rest.
As Labor Week is coming, I call on all teenagers to actively participate in housework. It not only improves our life skills but also makes our family life better.

A. a-c-b-e-d B. a-d-c-b-e C. b-e-c-d-a D. b-d-c-e-a
20. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Life Devoted to Farming B. The First Woman in the Navy
C. Meet the “Mother of GPS” D. The History of Early Computers
C
