It all tarted when then 16-year-0ld Boyan Slat was scuba diving(水肺潜水)in Greece and was surprised to sce more plastic than fish. The question“Why don't we just clean it up?”stayed in his mind, and led him to devote his high school science project to understanding the problem.
After a year of experimenting,Boyan came up with the idea to use the ocean currents to his advantage, and let them be the driving force behind catching and collecting the plastic.Instead of going after the plastic, you could let the plastic come to you.
Initially, his idea did not gain attention. He decided to quit his studies and founded The Ocean Cleanup, with just 300 euros of savings as a starting capital.
Then one night in March 2013,things changed. He spoke on TEDx about this project. The TEDx video spread to thousands of people. In a matter of days,an initial team was built, and it raised the first 90,000$.The project took off.
Their early models had their share of failures—plastic slipping through, parts breaking offin the ocean. But they kept at it.In 2019,System 001 finally worked. Then came System 002,which in 2021 gathered 20,000 pounds of ocean waste. Now they launched the Interceptor:a solar-powered system designed to catch plastic in rivers before it reaches the ocean. So far,Interceptors have been used in Indonesia,Malaysia, the Dominican Republic, and Los Angeles—with more on the way.
Boyan Slat's journey is a powerful reminder that innovation, passion, and determination can lead to significant change. His work to clean up the oceans has made a lasting impact on the world and serves as an inspiration for others to take action on environmental issues.

Do you remember the last time you took a language course? When you finished the course, your language abilities were different from your classmates'.
英语试卷第4页(共10页)
Thesc differenccs cxist in every field. But in my field, the psychology of secondl-language learning, one question rcmains unclear:why is it easier for somce people to learn a new language than for others?Recently,I was excited to learn that scientist Xiaoqian Chai and her team at McGill University have been studying this question. They looked at students in a 12-week French course and found big differences in how much each student improved.
For their study, the researchers scanned(扫描) the brains of native English speakers before the course started They collected samples(样本)of the participants'French speaking and reading before and after the course. The results showed that the strength of connections between different resting parts of a person's brain could predict how much their specific language skills would improve.Specifically, improvement in reading depended on the connection between the brain's visual word-form area and another.Improvement in speaking, however, depended on the connection between the speech-related area and two other regions. For both skills, stronger brain connections before the course were linked to greater improvement after the training.
These findings lead to more questions:If brain connectivity predicts learning, how can we predict the connectivity itself?I can’t help but connect this to research on bilingual education, which shows that a strong first language is the key to learning a strong second language. So,the participants'pre-existing English skills might have influenced their brain connections.
As we understand more about how the brain learns language,we can turn this knowledge into teaching techniques that play to each student's strengths. The next generation of middle-schoolers is entering a more globalized world than ever, and they are going to need our help.
28.Why does the writer ask a question at the beginning of the text?
A.To share a personal doubt. B.To challenge the reader
C.To summarize a study. D.To introduce the topic.
29.How did Xiaoqian Chai and her team perform their study?
A.By teaching students different memory skills.
B.By asking participants about their learning habits.
C.By scanning brains and collecting speech samples.
D.By comparing course grades from different schools.
30.What predicted language skill improvement in the study?
A.The participants'age and background. B.The intelligence level of the participants.
C.The amount of time spent in the classroom. D.The connections'strength of the brain parts.
31.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The application of the study. B.The ways of English loarning.
C.The importance of globalization, D.The number of middle-schoolers.

When considering the members of my social network,I often find myself enveloped in pure feelings of love
英语试卷第5页(共10页)
and warmth, affection and support.A handful, however, arouse quite different emotions—a mixture of eagerness and fear.In the right mood, these individuals can deliver a fun-filled evening, but at the wrong moment, they can consume all my goodwill. If this sounds familiar, then you too have frenemies.Psychologists call them “ambivalent relationships”.According to a wealth of research these relationships are often more stressful. They can damage your mental and physical health.
Knowing this, the simple solution would seem to bc to cut ties with these people. But our relationships with frenemies aren't simple and escaping from them isn't always possible or even desirable.
Julianne Holt-Lunstad and her Utah-based Brigham Young University colleagues designed a scale identifying four relationship categories.Try it:pick people in your network and answer two questions on a 1-6 scale. When you are feeling in need of advice, understanding or a favour, how helpful is your connection?Likewise, how upsetting is your connection?
People scoring 1 on both are weak relationships. Those who score high on helpfulness and low on upset are supportive ties;low on helpfulness and high on upset are aversive(令人厌恶的)relationships;both high indicate ambivalent connections —frenemies. They may be incredibly generous when you have a problem yet can also lash out(怒斥)with a bitter put-down when they feel envious or threatened We might hope the good outweighs the bad in such relationships, but the research illustrates the problems of ambivalent connections are hard to solve, especially in work or family.
Furthermore, ambivalent connections contribute to telomere decline.Telomeres, protective caps at chromosome (染色体)ends, prevent DNA damage during cell division. As we age, telomeres wear down, and, when they become too short, cells may start to breakdown or die.Shorter telomeres increase the risk of age-related diseases.
Simply being aware of the ambivalent nature of a relationship might offer some protection,so that we could manage expectations, focus more on the good in these people and feel sympathy for their unpleasant characters, while also attempting to reduce contact when they cause stresses.Just as significantly this has reminded me to consider my own behavior—are there relationships in which I am the frenemy?
32.What does the underlined word“ambivalent”in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Giving support or encouragement B.Continuing or developing gradually.
C.Having a mixture of opposing feelings. D.Happening sometimes and not at other times.
33.What can be learned about Julianne Holt-Lunstad's scale?
A.It measures the level of closeness of friendships.
B.It predicts the outcome ofconflicts with frenemies.
C.It shows it's difficult to find a solution to frenemies.
D.It compares the benefits of different connections.
34.What do we know about frenemies according to the passage?
A.Ambivalent connections can shorten telomere to prevent DNA damage.
B.Proper expectations and less contact can help reduce their negative impact.

The teenage years are marked by intense changes—physical, social, emotional, and developmental—that can be difficult to deal with at times. 36 As you grow older, conflicts with family often increase, mainly due to the desire for more independence.Peer(同龄人)pressure also plays a major role,as teenagers are more likely to be influenced by friends while testing boundaries and seeking autonomy(自主权).

While conflicts are a natural part of this stage of life, there are ways to manage and resolve them productively.
38 By expressing your thoughts and feelings clearly, you can prevent misunderstandings and build mutual respect.Equally important is active listening understanding others'outlook can help you find common ground and reach a resolution.
39 Staying calm allows you to think more clearly and avoid worsening emotions.Techniques such as deep breathing or temporarily stepping away from the situation can help manage intense feelings.Additionally, turning to trusted adults or peers who have faced similar challenges can help you gain practical strategies for regulating emotions.
While conflicts are a normal part of growing up,they can also be opportunities for personal development and self-discovery. 40
