After a long day at the office, Jane Hodgson was on her way home and looking forward to relaxing with a nice cup of tea. While driving, she noticed that there was a car pulled over at the side of the road and a crowd had started to gather around someone who was lying on the ground.
Jane, who had completed first aid at work course with the British Red Cross, pulled over to see if she could do something and it turned out to be lucky for the victim.
Describing the scene she saw, Jane says, “A crowd of onlookers gathered at the scene.A couple of young men were creamfaced and looking lost. They were completely terrified. When I walked up, firstaid kit in hand, they said, ‘You're a first aiderOh thank goodness.’ They were so shocked that they hadn't even thought to call an ambulance yet.”
A young girl called Jenny was lying there. It turned out that the teen had been hit by a car and gone over the handlebars of her bike, landing on her head and shoulder.
“I was worried because she had not been wearing a helmet when she got knocked down, and I thought that she should not be moved as I couldn't be sure about a spinal (脊柱的) injury. But after looking her over, in relief, I felt fairly confident that she had escaped relatively unharmed.Even so, as time passed and we continued to wait for an ambulance, the amount of pain the girl was in was increasing. To avoid the risk of her going into shock, I kept her talking. We chatted about her boyfriend and anything I could think of to keep her mind off the pain. She squeezed my hand when the pain got too much and this helped,” describes Jane.
Thinking back, Jane says, “I never did find out what happened to the girl.Apart from her boyfriend I wasn't thanked by anyone else, but that's OK.For me, knowing that in a small way I helped that girl through what was a frightening experience is all the reward I need.It felt great to know I'd made a difference.”

In the past years the popularity of rock climbing has greatly increased, and so has the number of injuries. It has been estimated that rock climbing is now enjoyed by more than 9 million people in the US each year.Study findings revealed a 65 percent increase in the number of patients that were treated in US emergency departments for rock climbingrelated injuries between 2001 and 2021.
The study, published in the online issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, found that about 40,000 patients were treated in US emergency departments for rock climbingrelated injuries between 2001 and 2021.The most common types of rock climbingrelated injuries were fractures (骨折) and sprains (扭伤).The ankle was the most common body part to be injured (40 percent).Climbers in the study ranged in age from 2 to 74, with an average age of 26.The study also found that women took up a quarter of the injuries.
Falls were the primary reason for injury with over threequarters of the injuries occurring as the result of a fall. The severity of fallrelated injuries had a lot to do with the height of the fall.Patients who were injured after falling from a height over 20 feet were 10 times more likely to be treated than patients who were injured falling from 20 feet or lower.
“We found that the climbers who fell from heights higher than 20 feet took up 70 percent of the patients treated for a rock climbingrelated injury,” explained the study author Lara McKenzie, PhD, director at the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Hospital.“This trend, combined with the fact that rock climbers have a higher hospitalization rate than other sports and recreational injuries, demonstrates the need to increase injury prevention efforts for climbers.”

(2025·山东淄博高二期末)At the Flosslande restaurant, Germany waiter Paul Blachut, 24, was busy at work.It was a warm Sunday afternoon in May and many cyclists and hikers came for refreshments at this pretty place beside the Lech river. The snow water from the Alps was very cold at this time of year, and it flowed quickly.
From behind the bar, Blachut had a good view of the river; there were stone steps that stretched some 20 metres down from the restaurant to the riverbank.
Among those enjoying the cooling water were a mother and her two teenage daughters, all in long dresses. They were standing on the edge of the riverbank, playing with an inflatable (充气的) boat when, suddenly, the girls lost their footing and were caught in the river's current.
It all happened so fast. The girls struggled to grab on to the boat, which their mother was sitting in, causing her into the river, too.Now all three were being carried away by the current.
A bystander shouted, “Three people are drowning (溺水) in the Lech!”
Blachut could only see a boat moving rapidly in the river. Then he spotted three people a short distance away, flapping their arms, trying to grasp anything they could. No one was helping them.Horrified, he saw that one of them kept sinking.
Despite having no lifesaving training, he rushed down to the riverbank, quickly taking his mobile phone, wallet and keys from his pockets and pulling off his Tshirt. Then he jumped into the cold river.
As Blachut got closer to them, he could tell that the mother seemed to be in the most trouble; her head was now almost under the water.
Without hesitation, Blachut dived under the drowning woman, pushing her upward and trying all his best to throw her forcefully towards the bank.An onlooker was able to get close enough to grab the woman's hand, pulling her to bank.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Blachut knew he must rescue the two daughters at once.
A bystander telephoned the nearest hospital.
[参考范文]
Blachut knew he must rescue the two daughters at once.He dived into the current again, swam quickly downstream and managed to get hold of one.Blachut gathered all his strength to push her toward the bank in the same way that he saved her mother.Looking back at the river, he could see someone was helping the other girla good thing.A bystander with medical training came forward and gave first aid to the girls.Exhausted and cold, Blachut sat on the bank, breathing heavily.
A bystander telephoned the nearest hospital. While waiting for the ambulance, some bystanders took care of the trembling mother and daughters.Thankfully, it was not long before an ambulance arrived and the grateful mother and daughters were sent to hospital immediately.Several onlookers expressed their admiration for the quickthinking waiter, Blachut, but he was modest about his role.“It is everyone's joint efforts that creates miracles,” he said, adding that it was worthwhile to have rescued someone in the cold water.
