I Was the Doughnut Lady
In university I had a part-time job at a shop that sold doughnut s and coffee. Situated on a block where several buses stopped, it served the people who had a few minutes to wait for their bus.
Every afternoon around four o'clock, a group of school children would burst into the shop, and business would come to a stop. Adults would glance in, see the crowd and pass on. But I didn't mind if the children waited for their bus inside. Sometimes I would hand out a bus fare when a ticket went missing-always repaid the next day. On snowy days I would give away some doughnuts. I would lock the door at closing time, and we waited in the warm shop until their bus finally arrived.
I enjoyed my young friends, but it never occurred to me that I played an important role in their lives—until one afternoon when a man came and asked if I was the girl working on weekdays around four o'clock. He identified himself as the father of two of my favorites.
“I want you to know I appreciate what you do for my children. I worry about them taking two buses to get home. It means a lot that they can wait here and you keep an eye on them. When they are with the doughnut lady, I know they are safe.” I told him it wasn't a big deal, and that I enjoyed the kids.
So I was the Doughnut Lady. I not only received a title, but became a landmark. Now I think about all the people who keep an eye on my own children. They become, well, Doughnut Ladies. Like the men a t the skating rink, who let my boys ring home; Or the bus driver who drove my daughter to her stop at the end of the route at night but wouldn't leave until I arrived to pick her up; Or that nice police officer who took pity on my boys walking home in the rain when I was at work—even though the phone rang all the next day with calls from curious neighbors. “Was that a police car I saw at your house last night?”
That wasn't a police car. That was a Doughnut Lady.

D. she hadn't found it hard to get along with the children

A. He took the boys to the police station.

根据最后一段中“Was that a police car I saw at your house last night?(我昨晚在你家看到的是一辆警车吗?)”
根据最后一段中“Or that nice police officer who took pity on my boys walking home in the rain when I was at work—even though the phone rang all the next day with calls from curious neighbors. ‘Was that a police car I saw at your house last night?’(还有那位好心的警官,他同情我的孩子们在我上班的时候冒雨走回家,尽管隔天电话铃响个不停,都是好奇的邻居打来的。
When I graduated from high school, I wanted to major in comparative literature. But, once I found out my friends were going into “real” majors, like marketing, nursing, and engineering, I figured I needed to do the same to ensure a good career. So I changed my mind and chose Business Management as my major. I forced myself to believe that I would enjoy it and succeed in the future, but eventually I exhausted myself understanding the economy and trying new marketing techniques. Coming out of this experience, I realize it is ok to be different from others and to study things like classcs, art history and other majors offered in the College of Humanities(人文学科)!
The worries most people have about a Humanitie degree and finding a career afterwards are that the majors are too abstract, and one will not obtain any applicable skills. Actually ideas discussed in Humanities classes, which are occasionally different from what people commonly believe, offer a broad perspective(视角). How could one effectively be an unbiased(无偏见的)writer with only a knowledge of the popular opinion of society? How could one speak persuasively ith closed minds? Only seeing the world through a single perspective leads to missed learning, missed friendships, and missed growth! With a broader perspective, we wl be more free, more open-minded, and less limited in what we can become!
STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) graduates learn actual skills in their studie, while humanities majors learn “soft skills” like communicating effectively through writing critically and speaking persuasively, synthesizing(综合)ideas through gathering and interpreting information, and developing cultural awareness. Do those soft skills sound useless and inapplicable to you? Think of it. How often do you communicate with others? Produce ideas? Encounter people from other cultures? Every day. Every SECOND of every day. So why not master these skills?
If you choose a major in the College of Humanities, you will be needed. The job market is quietly creating thousands of openings a week for people who can bring a humanist’s grace to our rapidly evolving high-tech future. Your skills will be valuable to any workplace you hope to be in. Chase after your dream major with all your energy, no matter what other people think.
46. Why did the author choose Business Management as his major at first?
A. He was tired of learning comparative literature.
B. He came to enjoy learning marketing techniques.
C. He wanted to go to the same university as his friends.
D. He believed Business Management was more practical.
47. According to the author, what is a possible way to gain a broad perspective?
A. Making more friends and learning from them.
B. Exchanging ideas in a philosophy seminar.
C. Opening your mind to future possibilities.
D. Getting to know the popular opinion of society.
48. In which of the following situations do soft skills play the most important role?
A. Writing a software program.
B. Performing a heart operation.
C. Playing a musical instrument.
D. Negotiating with a business partner.
49. The author believes the job market for Humanities graduates is .
A. recovering
B. depressing
C. promising
D. challenging
50. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. Stick to Your Desired major

D 47. B 48. D 49. C 50. A

It’s human nature to enjoy playing. From board games to sports, games have been a significant part of human culture for a very long time. Since their invention in the mid-20th century, video games have become one of the most popular ways to have fun. In 2018, UK games spent an average of over seven hours a week playing, according to research by global network provider Limelight. But how much is too much? When does fun turn into an addiction? Are we addicted to video games?
“The strong desire to play never disappears,” said Sean - not his real name - on the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire programme. His deep interest in gaming once led him to play for 48 hours straight. It consumed him to the point where he neglected his family and children, spending all his time on gaming and ignoring their needs, which ultimately led to losing them, his job, and his home. Since then, he has entered a rehabilitation center, and although he slipped back into gaming once or twice, he has been doing well for the last 14 months.
Sean is not alone. The UK Addiction Treatment group reported that the number of people seeking treatment for gaming addiction grew from four in 2014 to 22 in 2018. In 2018, the World Health Organization classified gaming addiction as an illness. In the UK, an investigation into technology addiction by the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee included statements from people who said they were addicted to games. One, Matus Mikus, said, “games are naturally addictive.”
However, the association for UK Interactive Entertainment told the committee that there was not enough evidence to support the claim of addiction. They argued that gaming could be beneficial, for example, by developing thinking skills. In fact, in a 2018 BBC article, Dr. Rajin Chowdhury, who works in an aesthetic and intensive care at Sheffield Teaching Hospital, shared a similar view. Gaming, he said, made him more skillful with his hands, improved his ability to use his hands and eyes together effectively, and helped with operations performed remotely by looking at a screen, especially when the controls were complex.
Are video games addictive? The answer is unclear. As with many things, balance is important. The games themselves may not be the problem, but letting them negatively impact our lives certainly is. With that in mind, play well, have fun, and remember to take regular breaks.
51. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To criticize the impact of video games on society.
B. To introduce the topic of video games and their popularity.
C. To provide information about how much people play games.
D. To explain the history of video games.
52. The underlined word “neglected” in Paragraph 2 probably means “______”.
A. Ignored B. Supported C. Watched D. Disliked
53. What does the third paragraph mainly discuss?
A. The benefits of gaming. B. The popularity of video games.
C. The fun of playing video games. D. The rise in gaming addiction cases.
54. What does the association claim about gaming?
A. It is harmful. B. It causes addiction. C. It has benefits. D. It is expensive.
55. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Video Games: A New Form of Entertainment
B. Video Games: Addiction or Benefit?
C. The Dark Side of Video Game Addiction
D. How to Deal with Video Game Addiction
B 52. A 53. D 54. C 55. B
根据第一段“It’s human nature to enjoy playing.
故选A项。
根据第三段“The UK Addiction Treatment group reported that the number of people seeking treatment for gaming addiction grew from four in 2014 to 22 in 2018. In 2018, the World Health Organization classified gaming addiction as an illness. (英国成瘾治疗组织报告称,寻求游戏成瘾治疗的人数从2014年的4人增加到2018年的22人。2018年,世界卫生组织将游戏成瘾列为一种疾病。)”可知,该段主要讲述了英国寻求游戏成瘾治疗的人数增长以及世界卫生组织将游戏成瘾列为疾病,即主要讨论游戏成瘾案例的增加。故选D项。
【54题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“However, the association for UK Interactive Entertainment told the committee that there was not enough evidence to support the claim of addiction. They argued that gaming could be beneficial, for example, by developing thinking skills.
Just over a year ago, my iPhone was lost. My first thought was to replace it. But I stopped myself and asked a question: Does owning a smartphone make my life better, or worse? I decided to try living for a time without a smartphone. So I bought an old, $30 phone and began my life without smartphone.
One day after I made the switch, my wife, daughter and I were in Washington visiting a museum. By afternoon, I started acting like a true addict. I used my wife’s smartphone to check Gmail. The beginning rush of seeing so many unread emails was spoiled (破坏) by a work-related message. For the next half-hour or so, I walked around thinking about that message instead of being present at the museum. I was physically there, but my mind was focused on work.
The most immediate advantage of not owning a smartphone, I quickly learned, is the ability to immerse yourself in social situations. Without a smartphone to look at, you don’t have much of a choice but to be present, and other people—whether it’s a colleague or a stranger on social media—can’t enter your life easily at inconvenient times. So I made my short-term experiment permanent.
Do I miss Google Maps? Kind of, but I’ve also discovered that not having it makes driving safer. I now check a map before I leave the house and write down basic directions. This keeps me focused on the road rather than the phone. If I get lost, it’s nice to ask people for directions. On the subject of money: My phone bill is now down to $30 a month. I have no data plan, no expensive phone to make payments on, no apps to buy. All of these come from not using a smartphone.
56. Why did the author buy the old phone?(no more than 10 words)
_____________________________________________________________
57. How did the speaker check his Gmail while at the museum?(no more than 10 words)
_____________________________________________________________
58. What do the underlined part “immerse yourself in” in Para. 3 probably mean?(no more than 5 words)
_____________________________________________________________
59. What is the last paragraph mainly about?(no more than 10 words)
_____________________________________________________________
60. What’s your opinion on smartphones? Please explain.(no more than 25 words)
_____________________________________________________________
56. To live without a smartphone.
57. He used his wife’s smartphone.
58. Fully engage in or focus on.
59. Benefits of not using a smartphone.
60. Smartphones are useful but can also be distracting. Balancing their use is key to maximizing their benefits while minimizing drawbacks.
根据第一段“I decided to try living for a time without a smartphone. So I bought an old, $30 phone and began my life without smartphone.(我决定试着在一段时间内不使用智能手机生活。所以我买了一部30美元的旧手机,开始了没有智能手机的生活)”可知,作者买旧手机是为了过没有智能手机的生活,故答案为To live without a smartphone.
根据第二段“By afternoon, I started acting like a true addict. I used my wife’s smartphone to check Gmail(到了下午,我开始表现得像个真正的瘾君子。我用我妻子的智能手机查看了Gmail)”可知,作者在博物馆时是用他妻子的智能手机查看Gmail的,故答案为He used his wife’s smartphone.
根据第三段“Without a smartphone to look at, you don’t have much of a choice but to be present (如果没有智能手机可以查看,你就没有太多选择,只能专注于当下)”可知,我很快意识到,不拥有智能手机的最直接好处是,你可以将自己沉浸在社交场合中。 Fully engage in or focus on.
最后一段“Do I miss Google Maps? Kind of, but I’ve also discovered that not having it makes driving safer. I now check a map before I leave the house and write down basic directions. This keeps me focused on the road rather than the phone. If I get lost, it’s nice to ask people for directions. On the subject of money: My phone bill is now down to $30 a month. I have no data plan, no expensive phone to make payments on, no apps to buy. All of these come from not using a smartphone.( 我想念谷歌地图吗? Benefits of not using a smartphone.
根据第一段“I decided to try living for a time without a smartphone. So I bought an old, $30 phone and began my life without smartphone.(我决定试着在一段时间内不使用智能手机生活。所以我买了一部30美元的旧手机,开始了没有智能手机的生活)”、第二段“The beginning rush of seeing so many unread emails was spoiled (破坏) by a work-related message. For the next half-hour or so, I walked around thinking about that message instead of being present at the museum. I was physically there, but my mind was focused on work(看到这么多未读邮件的最初兴奋感被一条与工作相关的信息破坏了。在接下来的半小时左右,我走来走去,想着那条信息,而不是在博物馆里。我身体在那里,但心思却集中在工作上)”以及最后一段“Do I miss Google Maps? Kind of, but I’ve also discovered that not having it makes driving safer. I now check a map before I leave the house and write down basic directions. This keeps me focused on the road rather than the phone. If I get lost, it’s nice to ask people for directions. On the subject of money: My phone bill is now down to $30 a month. Balancing their use is key to maximizing their benefits while minimizing drawbacks.

Every Setback Is a Test for Us
Hello, everyone. I’m Li Hua. Today I am very glad to have the chance to speak about the topic: Every Setback Is a Test for Us.
As we all know, everyone will face some setbacks every now and then. I came across many setbacks in my study and life. I failed in my physical final exam when I was in Senior One. Knowing the result, I cried hard. I analyzed the situation and studied harder. Finally, I became good at physics. In my opinion, when setbacks happen, we should be brave and stay optimistic. It is a good way to relieve the pain by turning to our trusted ones for comfort, watching a funny movie, listening to music or visiting a beautiful place.
Suffering is the most powerful teacher of life and every setback is a test for us. I absolutely believe that we need to face the setbacks bravely and learn from them. Only the one who passes the test can succeed.
Thanks for your Listening.

B Broaden Your Perspective
C. How to Acquire Soft Skills
D Humanities vs. STEM
