Earlier this year, I was looking for part-time work. Moonmilk, a cake and ice cream shop nearby, was hiring, so I went in for a trial shift. I practised scooping (舀) ice cream for 20 minutes and talked to the manager for 40 minutes about our favourite pizza spots. I immediately knew this place was special. While I originally just set out to earn some extra money during the summer, the bonds and memories I made there turned out to be more valuable than any paycheck.
Once, a man who works for the union of the local movie theatre came in to place an order. He wanted a cake to celebrate a victory he’ d had in stopping the theatre from being evicted (驱逐) by its landlord. Moonmilk’s owner was touched by the story and refused payment for the cake. Later, the union leader— so moved by the gesture— delivered free movie tickets to Moonmilk staff.
The older women customers are among my favourites. They have a way of making you feel at ease; they often wonder if I’m okay and tell me I look tired. One regular, always alone and smiling, is kind and generous, ordering methodically (有条不紊地) and always declaring we have the best ice cream in the city.
There’s also the guy who comes in frequently to ask if we have the chocolate orange flavour— that we only ever have at Christmas. I always have to say no, but his persistence brings me joy, especially on days when I’m tired.
As with any job, there are unpleasant moments. My wrist often hurts from repeatedly scooping out ice cream, and it’s always annoying when a group of people come in and take way too long to order, holding up all the others waiting.
In the fall, my full-time job’s schedule becomes more demanding and I know I’ll have to scale back my shifts. I’ll miss the busyness of the summer season and will run into my favourite customers less often. The winter months are long and the owner has spoken about days when only three people come in.
But my experience working at this popular spot has helped me feel more connected to my local community. The interactions and connections I’ve made will sustain me until at least next summer. Hopefully, the orange chocolate ice cream has returned by then.

Michael Evans was standing in line at the Wayne County Treasurer’ s Office in Detroit last August, waiting to pay tax, when he heard a disturbing sound ahead of him. The woman at the window was crying and so was the cashier. Then Evans learned why: He heard the cashier inform the woman that her house would be sold at auction due to her inability to pay tax on time.
Evans, a businessman, couldn’t accept what was happening. He approached the window and said to the cashier, “If you can get her house back, I’ll pay tax for her.” The amount that was due was $5,000. The two women were surprised and the despair turned into disbelief, Evans promised to go straight to the bank and come back with the money. He didn’t renege on his promise.
When he returned to the treasurer’s office, he asked someone else waiting in line to hand the $5,000 check to the cashier. Evans was trying to slip away quietly. He didn’t want to get attention. Evans often finds himself on the giving end of charitable situations, though for years he went unrecognized. He is the president of a firm, which owns a variety of businesses.
A few weeks after the tax incident, Evans received the Spirit of Detroit Award for his lifetime of sparing his money to help others. Again, he didn’t want the attention, but his son John felt the honor was overdue. “It was good to see my dad finally get the recognition he deserves,” John says. Michael Evans is nearing 60 and will retire soon. His son hopes to carry on with his father’s businesses, and with his dad’s determination to give money to people in need. “I model myself on my father,” John says.

My father was 44 and knew he wasn’t going to make it to 45. He wrote me a letter and hoped that something in it would help me for the rest of my life.
Since the day I was 12 and first read his letter, some of his words have lived in my heart. One part always stands out. “Right now, you are pretending to be a time-killer. But I know that one day, you will do something great that will set you among the very best.” Knowing that my dad believed in me gave me permission to believe in myself. “You will do something great.” He didn’t know what that would be, and neither did I, but at times in my life when I’ve felt proud of myself, I remember his words and wish he were here so I could ask, “Is this what you were talking about, Dad? Should I keep going?”
A long way from 12 now, I realize he would have been proud when I made any progress. Lately, though, I’ve come to believe he’d want me to move on to what will come next: to be proud of and believe in, somebody else. It’s time to start writing my own letters to my children. As mothers, our children look to us with the same unanswered question we had. Our kids don’t retreat because they’re afraid to fail. They’re only afraid of failing us. They don’t worry about being disappointed. Their fear--as mine was until my father’s letter--is of being a disappointment.
Give your children permission to succeed. They’re waiting for you to believe in them. I always knew my parents loved me. But trust me: That belief will be more complete, that love will be more real, and their belief in themselves will be greater if you write the words on their hearts: “Don’t worry; you’ll do something great.” Not having that blessing from their parents may be the only thing holding them back.
56.Why did the father write a letter to the author? (No more than 20 words)
57.What did the father mainly want the author to learn from his letter? (No more than 15 words)
58.What does the underlined word “retreat” mean? (No more than 3 words)
59.What is the children’s fear? (No more than 10 words)

What is the hottest topic at your school recently? In a high school in our city, it’s making money.
The school held an activity called “Making Money” last weekend. About 200 Junior 1 and Junior 2 students were divided into 30 teams. They went out to make money by selling things. What did they choose to sell? Some sold newspapers; some chose bottled water; some sold environmentally friendly shopping bags and bamboo baskets.
Hu Qing’s team decided to sell some useful books in front of the Children Activity Center. They thought parents would like to buy the books for their children. But unfortunately, they met urban management officers. The officers asked them to leave. “We played hide-and-seek with the officers for the whole morning,” said Hu. “Finally we had to give up.”
Wang Bing and her team sold ice cream in a square. They didn’t meet any officers. But few people were interested in what they were selling. The team then put up a board saying “For Country Kids”. It worked. More people came to their stall (小摊). An old lady even gave them 100 yuan. “She didn’t want any change. She said she wanted to help the children,” said Wang. “We were touched.” Later that day they gave the 100 yuan and more to the “Charity Organization” office. They felt proud that they did a bit of fundraising.
Meng Zhaoxiang and his team were luckier. They sold all their cakes in four hours, spending 39.5 yuan and getting back 80 yuan. They made 40.5 yuan. “It was not easy to make the money,” said Meng. “Some people just looked. Others just tasted but didn’t buy. Now I know how hard it is for our parents to make the money we need to lead a happy life.”
So every job has its share of frustration and challenges; to do well you must learn to deal with it.

One hot August afternoon, Deena Hoagland and her son Joe sat on a floating platform at Dolphins Plus, a marine center in Key Largo, Florida. Nearby, a large dolphin circled, occasionally lifting its head through the water to observe them. Suddenly, the dolphin threw water on them. Three-year-old Joe, who had a stroke (中风) six weeks earlier, smiled and laughed for the first time since.
Joe was born with a rare heart condition and spent much of his first three years in hospitals. After several heart surgeries, the last one led to a stroke, which left him unconscious for eight days. As a result, he lost movement on one side of his body and couldn’t see out of one eye. Feeling hopeless and deeply saddened, Joe became despondent and lost interest in everything, even his favorite toys. Doctors suggested placing him in a full-time rehabilitation center.
Deena refused and decided to try dolphin-assisted therapy. She called Dolphins Plus and got permission to bring Joe. To the surprise of Lloyd Borgas, the owner, Deena arrived with Joe minutes after the call. Borgas was unsure about the wisdom of his generosity but led them to a platform where Joe met Fonzie, a playful dolphin.
Joe’s reaction to Fonzie was positive, and Deena brought him back daily. Joe slowly began to recover from his depression. With each visit, he regained some movement on his left side. Trainers encouraged Joe to swim with Fonzie, and by mid-September, he was swimming with his new friend. Trainers challenged Joe to feed Fonzie with his left hand, helping him regain strength. Over the next two years, Joe fully recovered.
Now a healthy teenager, Joe frequently visits Fonzie and helps his parents with Island Dolphin Care, a program Deena started to help other special-needs children. The program has been successful, helping many children and their families. Deena emphasizes that while dolphins have no special healing powers, the joy and laughter they bring to children can feel magical.

When it comes to New York City, most people probably picture in their minds the attractive lifestyles of the rich and famous or think of Broadway, Times Square and other tourist attractions. However, there is another side of New York City that is far less known. The summer after tenth grade, I went with my group on a mission trip to New York City for a week.
I had always known the existence of poverty in major cities, but I had never seen it to a degree as high as we did there. We worked at several different locations with our small groups. One day, we served at a soup kitchen and what I saw astounded me. I couldn’t believe my eyes. We saw people from all walks of life. We met people who came there because they had no job, no home and no money. Another day, we volunteered at a homeless shelter. We helped people there do some cleaning and spent time talking to them and listening to their stories. It was incredible to see how thankful they were to us for just spending a couple of hours talking to them, or just be listening.
Every person we met on that trip had a unique story, and they were surprisingly willing to share. They were just in so much need to be listened to. Besides, whatever their stories were, there was a common thread we saw in them—hope. These were people who had nothing and yet they were so hopeful about their future.
My experience during that summer changed my life. I used to picture my future as containing a big house, fancy cars and a lot of money, but now I see my future differently. I hope it will be one where I can be helpful to others and give back to society. After college, I would really like to work for some sort of global aid organization that deals with the social issues, such as poverty and homelessness.

As parents would always feel proud of their child, Kelli Boehle says her son Nik was an amazing and caring person. Nik was diagnosed with cancer in 2008 when he was 17. He passed away in 2012. But Nik’s kindness and generosity have lived on long after his death.
After he was diagnosed and started treatment, Nik was granted a wish experience from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “For just this period of time, we didn’t think about cancer,” Kelli Boehle said. “All we thought about was enjoying our time together.”
In 2009, Nik met another young man Nate, who was also going through cancer treatment. He’d been diagnosed a month after turning 18, and Nik learned he was too old to qualify for a wish. The night before Nik passed away, he asked his mother to help ensure that young adults fighting cancer could have their wishes come true too.
“It was like a seed he planted that just wouldn’t stop coming into my mind,” she said. In 2012, Kelli Boehle started Nik’ s Wish. The nonprofit grants wishes to young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 who are battling cancer. Nate was the organization’s first wish recipient (接受者). “It’s meant to bring them joy and know that they’ re loved and that we’re fighting for them, too,” Kelli Boehle said.
Recently, 19-year-old Jordan Morrow received her wish to attend a Taylor Swift concert as part of a trip to Los Angeles. For Morrow, who has spent the last year battling brain cancer, going to the concert has done more than lift her spirits. “I think it’s something to get me through whatever comes my way,” she said. “And I’m thankful for Nik’s Wish for that.”
In the 11 years since Nik passed away, the organization has granted more than 300 wishes across more than 30 states. In the beginning, Kelli Boehle says she wasn’t sure she could be a wish maker and work closely with the young adults. But now, it’s her favorite thing to do.

Emily Carter, a dedicated nurse at Riverside Hospital in Florida, has been caring for patients for over eight years. She believes that nurses are not only healthcare providers but also emotional support for patients and their families. They possess a unique ability to understand the fears and concerns of those in their care.
One evening during her shift, Emily noticed an elderly patient, Mr. Thompson, looking particularly anxious. When Emily approached him, he confided that he was worried about undergoing surgery the next day, especially since he had no family nearby to support him. An idea suddenly struck Emily. “How about I sit with you for a while and we can talk about it?” she suggested warmly.
After Mr. Thompson agreed, Emily pulled up. a chair and spent the next hour listening to his concerns and sharing her own experiences. As they talked, his anxiety began to fade. Soon, other patients in the room became curious and started asking if they could join the conversation. “Can we talk with Nurse Emily too?” they asked.
Now, Emily dedicates part of her shift to providing emotional support to patients, especially those who feel isolated or anxious. She organizes small group discussions to help patients connect with one another. “Emily is incredibly compassionate and brings a sense of comfort to our hospital. She makes everyone feel valued and heard,” said-Dr. Smith, a fellow nurse.
For Emily, what began as a simple act of kindness has transformed into a profound commitment to her patients’ well-being. When I was a kid, there was only one way my parents would let me stay home from school and that was if l had a high fever. Most of my friends could stay home due to a stomachache or a mild fever—but not me…I had to be dying in order to stay home. By the way, my parents are both doctors. My parents used to say that they were teaching me how to have a good work ethic(职业道德). I didn't understand the connection until last week.
The other day I was on the train and sat behind a young man who was complaining to his friend about his life. He went on for twenty minutes about how his passion in life was to make movies, but he wouldn't pursue it because he had no clue if he could make enough money and he didn't want to waste time because it would take years to make it big. He then admitted to thinking about buying stocks(股票)by borrowing money because he thought he could easily make six figures within one year. His friend agreed with him and said, "The stock is good because you can make tons of money and only work for a short time."
I think they were indulging(沉溺)in the wildest fantasy. Many people these days don't realize that when things seem to happen immediately, it is only because a lot of effort, determination and time have gone into them and it isn't due to some miraculous(不可思议的)event. The easier it looks, the more hours go into it. There is no excuse for laziness.
Looking at the two young men, all of a sudden I was having a flashback of being ten years old and watching the television show Fame.
In the show the dance teacher told her students, "If you want fame, fame costs and here's how you start paying for it…sweat." Every time we watched that show, my dad would proudly say how right the teacher was because in order to succeed you have to work hard.
56.When did the author's parents allow her to stay home from school?(no more than 10 words)
57.Why did the young man on the train give up his dream of making movies?(no more than 10 words)

Once a father and son went to the kite flying festival: The young son became very happy seeing the sky filled with colorful kites. He too asked his father to get him a kite and a thread with a roller so he can fly a kite too. So, the father went to the shop at the park where the festival was being held. He purchased kites and a roll of thread for his son.
His son started to fly a kite. Soon, his kite reached high up in the sky. After a while, the son said, “Father, it seems that the thread is holding up a kite from flying higher, if we break it, it will be free and will go flying even higher. Can we break it?” So, the father cut the thread from a roller. The kite started to go a little higher. That made the son very happy.
But then, slowly, the-kite started to come down. And, soon-it-fell down on the terrace (露台) of the unknown building. The young son was surprised to see this. He had cut the kite loose of its thread so it can fly higher, but instead, it fell down. He asked his father, “Father, I thought that by cutting off the thread, the kite would be free to fly higher. But why did it fall down?”
The father explained, “Son, at the height of life that we live in, we often think that some things we are tied with and they are preventing us from going further higher. The thread was not holding the kite from going higher, but it was helping it stay higher when the wind slowed down and when the wind picked up, you helped the kite go up higher in a proper direction through the thread. And when we cut the thread, it fell down without the support you were providing to the kite through the thread.”
The son realized his mistake.
Sometimes we feel that we can progress quickly and reach to the newer heights in our life if we were not tied up with our family, our home. But, we fail to realize that our family, our loved ones help us survive the tough time in our lives with their support and encourage us to reach higher heights in our life. They are not holding us, but are supporting us. Never let go of them.

A fresh white blanket of snow covered my favorite pine tree in our front yard. The farmland, the roads and the roofs of houses were all white. In the backyard, our dog jumped in the fresh snow. It was morning, just three weeks before Christmas Day.
I couldn’t sleep so I got up early with the dog and took in the quiet and calm beauty of the first snowfall of the holiday season. I turned on the lights of our two Christmas trees, which means a lot to me. I admired the beauty of the decorations and the memories they represented. These were memories that my wife, daughter, and I had created. On one tree, we had decorations from our various travels and favorite places. The other tree had a variety of decorations made by our daughter. The scent of fresh pine lingered (飘溢着) on each tree.
I started a pot of coffee. And I began thinking of the upcoming weeks and sighed. No gifts had been wrapped (包); half of them still needed to be purchased. The cookies had not been made or iced. Christmas cards still needed to be filled out and mailed. Final decorations and planning had to be finished. Work projects would need to be completed before the end of the year. There was really a lot to do.
Thankfully, the dog barked at the back door and helped me erase those thoughts of the upcoming tasks. She ran back to our bedroom to greet my wife and daughter. When seeing they were sleeping warmly and soundly, I smiled. As for me, my Christmas gifts had come early. Money couldn’t buy gifts like a blanket of snow or good memories. The gifts of love from my dog and the security of knowing my wife and daughter had slept warmly in their beds surpassed anything one could find at a store.
The Christmas gift I really need is a beautiful December morning — the time when everything is just right and those who are closest to me are there to share my moment.

59.What is the children’s fear? (No more than 10 words)
60.If your parents were to write you a letter, what would you expect to read? Give your reasons. (No more than 25 words)
56.Because he would die next year and wrote something to help the author for the rest of her life. 57.He hoped his daughter could get support and be confident from his letter. 58.Fall back./Draw back./Withdraw./Give up./Give in. 59.Their fear is of being a disappointment . Or: Their fear is of failing their parents 60.I would expect my parents to write about their love, support, and encouragement for me. Because they might help us overcome challenges in life.

He hoped his daughter could get support and be confident from his letter.。

(2024-2025 学年高三上・西青区・期末)

根据首段中的“Suddenly, the dolphin threw water on them. Three-year-old Joe, who had a stroke (中风) six weeks earlier, smiled and laughed for the first time since.(突然,海豚向他们泼水。六周前中风的三岁男孩乔,从那以后第一次笑了起来。)”可知,因为海豚向他们泼水的动作让乔自从中风以来第一次微笑并笑出声。故答案为:Because the dolphin threw water on them.
根据划线单词前的“Feeling hopeless and deeply saddened(感到绝望和深深的悲伤)”以及其后的“and lost interest in everything, even his favorite toys.(对一切都失去了兴趣,甚至对他最喜欢的玩具也失去了兴趣。)” Hopeless/Depressed/Sad/Unhappy.

With each visit, he regained some movement on his left side.(乔对Fonzie的反应是积极的,迪娜每天都带他回来。 Joe improved physically and emotionally by spending time with Fonzie./Joe got better by spending time with Fonzie./Joe was healed by being with Fonzie.
Yes, because animals offer love, companionship, and comfort during stressful times./No, because I feel more connected to people and prefer human relationships for support and companionship.

60.How does the author’s experience inspire you? (20 words)
56.That a lot of people are living in poverty./The side of poverty and homelessness. 57.Surprised./Astonished./Shocked./Startled. 58.They needed to be heard and were hopeful about their future. 59.A global aid organization that deals with the social issues. 60.He shows me how important it is to help other people and contribute to society.

That a lot of people are living in poverty./The side of poverty and homelessness.。
由文章第二段中“I couldn’t believe my eyes. (我简直不敢相信自己的眼睛。)”可知,作者不敢相信自己看到的,因此astounded意为“使惊讶”,与Surprised./Astonished./Shocked./Startled.。故答案为:Surprised./Astonished./Shocked./Startled.。
58.考查细节理解。由文章倒数第二段“Every person we met on that trip had a unique story, and they were surprisingly willing to share. They were just in so much need to be listened to. Besides, whatever their stories were, there was a common thread we saw in them—hope. These were people who had nothing and yet they were so hopeful about their future.

58.What does the author think of the young men on the train?(only I word)
59.How do you understand the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?(no more than 15 words)
60.Do you agree with the author's opinion? Why?(no more than 30 words)
56.Only when she was seriously ill.
Or: Only when she had a high fever.
Or: Only when she was dying. 57.To earn a lot in a short time.
Or: Because it would take years to make it big.
Or: Because he didn't know if he could make enough money. 58.Impractical.
Or: Lazy. 59.You have to start to work hard in order to succeed. 60.Yes, I do. There are no instant ways for success, and lots of time and energy must be devoted to them if we want to make achievements.
根据文章第一段“When I was a kid, there was only one way my parents would let me stay home from school and that was if l had a high fever. Most of my friends could stay home due to a stomachache or a mild fever — but not me…I had to be dying in order to stay home.(当我还是个孩子的时候,只有一种情况我父母才会让我待在家里不去上学,那就是我发高烧。我的大多数朋友因为胃痛或低烧就可以待在家里——但我不行…… 我得病得快不行了才能待在家里)”可知,作者只有在病得很重,比如发高烧或者奄奄一息的时候,父母才允许她待在家里不上学,故答案为Only when she was seriously ill. Or: Only when she had a high fever. Or: Only when she was dying.
根据文章第二段“He went on for twenty minutes about how his passion in life was to make movies, but he wouldn't pursue it because he had no clue if he could make enough money and he didn't want to waste time because it would take years to make it big.(他滔滔不绝地讲了二十分钟,说他一生的爱好就是拍电影,但他不会去追求这个梦想,因为他不知道自己能否赚到足够的钱,而且他不想浪费时间,因为要想成名需要好几年的时间)”可知,火车上的年轻人放弃拍电影的梦想,一是因为不确定能否赚到足够的钱,二是觉得要花费很多年才能成名,即想在短时间内赚大钱,故答案为To earn a lot in a short time. Or: Because it would take years to make it big. Or: Because he didn't know if he could make enough money.
根据文章第三段“I think they were indulging (沉溺) in the wildest fantasy.(我认为他们沉溺于最疯狂的幻想之中)”以及“There is no excuse for laziness(没有理由懒惰)”可知,作者觉得火车上的年轻人不切实际,想法很懒惰,故答案为Impractical. Or: Lazy.。

There are no instant ways for success, and lots of time and energy must be devoted to them if we want to make achievements.

56.Why did the son want to cut the thread? (no more than 12 words)
57.What does the underlined words mean in Paragraph 2? (no more than 2 words)
58.What was the son surprised for? (no more than 15 words)
59.According to the father, what is the purpose of the kite thread? (no more than 10 words)
60.What have you learned from this lesson? (no more than 20 words)
56.Because he thought the kite could fly higher without it. 57.Preventing/Stopping. 58.The kite didn’t fly higher, as he thought, but fell down. 59.To help the kite stay higher in the wind. 60.Open. (We should keep in touch with our family all the time, because they are our strong support.)
根据第二段中“After a while, the son said, “Father, it seems that the thread is holding up a kite from flying higher, if we break it, it will be free and will go flying even higher. Can we break it?”(过了一会儿,儿子说:‘爸爸,好像那根线拴住了一只风筝,不让它飞得更高,如果我们把它剪断,它就会自由,会飞得更高。我们能打破它吗?’)”可知,儿子想剪掉风筝线,是因为他认为没有它风筝也能飞得更高。故填Because he thought the kite could fly higher without it.
根据第二段中划线部分下文“if we break it, it will be free and will go flying even higher. Can we break it?(如果我们把它剪断,它就会自由,会飞得更高。我们能打破它吗?)”可知,儿子认为剪掉风筝线,风筝会飞得更高,这说明他认为是风筝线阻止风筝飞得更高,故划线短语“holding up”意为“阻止”,故填Preventing/Stopping.
根据第三段中“But then, slowly, the-kite started to come down. And, soon-it-fell down on the terrace (露台) of the unknown building. The young son was surprised to see this. He had cut the kite loose of its thread so it can fly higher, but instead, it fell down. (但后来,风筝慢慢地开始落下来。而且,很快它就掉到了那个不知名建筑物的露台上。小儿子看到这一幕,大吃一惊。他把风筝的线剪断了,这样它就可以飞得更高,但风筝却掉了下来。)”可知,儿子惊讶于风筝并没有像他想的那样飞得更高,而是落了下来。故填The kite didn’t fly higher, as he thought, but fell down.
根据第三段中“The thread was not holding the kite from going higher, but it was helping it stay higher when the wind slowed down and when the wind picked up, you helped the kite go up higher in a proper direction through the thread. (线并没有阻止风筝飞得更高,但是当风减弱时,它可以帮助风筝保持在更高的位置,当风增强时,你可以通过线帮助风筝以正确的方向飞得更高。)”可知,据父亲说,风筝线的用途是帮助风筝在风中保持更高的位置。故填To help the kite stay higher in the wind.
根据最后一段“Sometimes we feel that we can progress quickly and reach to the newer heights in our life if we were not tied up with our family, our home. But, we fail to realize that our family, our loved ones help us survive the tough time in our lives with their support and encourage us to reach higher heights in our life. They are not holding us, but are supporting us. Never let go of them.(有时我们觉得,如果我们不被家人、家所束缚,我们就能快速进步并达到生活的新高度。但是,我们没有意识到,我们的家人、我们所爱的人在他们的支持下帮助我们度过了生活中的艰难时期,并鼓励我们达到生活的更高高度。他们不是在束缚我们,而是在支持我们。永远不要放开他们。)”可知,从文中我们可以学到的是我们应该时刻与家人保持联系,因为他们是我们坚强的后盾。故填We should keep in touch with our family all the time, because they are our strong support.
56.What was the weather like that morning? ( no more than 5 words)
57.Why did the Christmas trees mean a lot to the author? ( no more than 10 words)
58.Why did the author sigh when thinking of the upcoming weeks? ( no more than 10 words)
59.What does the underlined word “surpassed” in Paragraph 4 mean? ( no more than 5 words)
60.What kind of Spring Festival gift do you want most? Please explain.( no more than 20 words)
56.It was snowy. / It snowed. 57.Because they represented good memories of the author’s family. 58.Because he had a lot to do before Christmas Day./ Because there was really a lot to do./ Because there were many things to do. 59.Overran/ Exceeded/ Went beyond/ Were much better than. 60.(答案不唯一) The best gift for me is that my family members are healthy and we can enjoy a reunion dinner together.
根据第一段“A fresh white blanket of snow covered my favorite pine tree in our front yard. The farmland, the roads and the roofs of houses were all white. In the backyard, our dog jumped in the fresh snow. It was morning, just three weeks before Christmas Day.( 前院我最喜欢的那棵松树上覆盖着一层洁白的雪。农田、道路和屋顶都是白色的。在后院,我们的狗在刚下完的雪里蹦蹦跳跳。这是一个早晨,离圣诞节只有三周了)”可知,那天早上是下雪的天气。故答案为It was snowy. /It snowed.
根据第二段中“I turned on the lights of our two Christmas trees, which means a lot to me. I admired the beauty of the decorations and the memories they represented. These were memories that my wife, daughter, and I had created.( 我打开了两棵圣诞树的灯,这对我来说意义重大。我欣赏这些美丽的装饰和它们所代表的回忆。这些都是我和妻子、女儿创造的记忆)”可知,圣诞树对作者意义重大是因为它们代表了作者家庭的美好回忆。故答案为Because they represented good memories of the author’s family.
根据第三段中“And I began thinking of the upcoming weeks and sighed. No gifts had been wrapped (包) ; half of them still needed to be purchased. The cookies had not been made or iced. Christmas cards still needed to be filled out and mailed. Final decorations and planning had to be finished. Work projects would need to be completed before the end of the year. There was really a lot to do.( 我开始考虑接下来的几周,叹了口气。没有礼物包装;其中一半仍然需要购买。饼干既没有做,也没有冰。圣诞卡仍然需要填写和邮寄。最后的装饰和规划必须完成。工作项目需要在年底前完成。真的有很多事要做)”可知,作者在想到即将到来的几周时叹气是因为圣诞节前他有很多事要做。故答案为Because he had a lot to do before Christmas Day./ Because there was really a lot to do./ Because there were many things to do.
根据划线单词句中“The gifts of love from my dog and the security of knowing my wife and daughter had slept warmly in their beds…(从我的狗狗那里得到的爱的礼物,以及知道我的妻子和女儿在她们的床上温暖地睡着了的安全感……)” Overran/ Exceeded/ Went beyond/ Were much better than.
The best gift for me is that my family members are healthy and we can enjoy a reunion dinner together.
