Why don’t you get a proper job?
Today’s 14-and 15-year-olds are ambitious. They are optimistic about their 1 , but their career ideas are rather vague. A job for life is not in their vocabulary; neither is a dead-end but secure job that is boring but pays the bills. Almost half the boys surveyed expected that their hobbies would lead them into the right sort of job, while most girls seemed determined to 2 traditionally female careers such as nursing.
In the past, this might have counted as bad news. But the world has changed. The global economy is not kind to yesterday’s 3 and dependable worker. The future belongs to quick-thinking people who are resourceful, ambitious and can take the 4 . This means that a 14-year-old who sees her working future as a kind of adventure, to be made up as she goes along, is not necessarily being 5 .
However, she has to have the training and 6 to help her develop the right skills for today’s market; not the rigid (死板的) preparation for a workplace that disappeared 20 years ago. So what is to be done? Agood first step would be to change the way in which schools prepare young people for adult life. The education system is becoming less 7 and more obsessed (无法摆脱) with traditional skills at just the time that the employment market is going in the opposite direction.
Accurate, up-to-date information on new jobs and qualifications can help guidance counsellors to help their students. Young people need solid information on the sort of training they need to 8 the career of their dreams. Also, a little bit of encouragement can go a long way.
What, then, can we as parents do to help them? The best thing is to forget all the advice that our parents gave us, and step into our teenager’s shoes. Once we’ve done that, it’s easier to see how important it is that they learn how to be 9 and resourceful. Give them the courage to follow their dreams—however odd they might sound right now. In a world that offers economic security to almost no one, 10 is a terrible thing to waste.

Even if you never hope to reach Mozart’s level of mastery, you may consider how he removed all the 43 in his path to success. Maybe you’ve done everything right — 44 at school, worked hard, and landed a good, high-paying job-but you’re tired of being just like everyone else.
However, drafting a plan of action can be daunting. What, then, is holding you back? Rich Karlgaard, the publisher of Forbes magazine and author of Late Bloomers, argues that our cultures’ customs with early achievement discourages us from 45 our passions. Instead of having varied interests, studying widely, and taking our time — 46 to self-discovery-we’re encouraged to ace tests, become specialists right away, and pursue safe, stable, and profitable careers. As a result, most of us end up choosing professional excellence over personal fulfillment, and often we lose ourselves in the process.
To prompt a revolution in your own life, there are a few things to keep in mind. First and foremost, it’s never too late to “become” yourself. Aristotle, for example, didn’t fully devote himself to writing and philosophy until he was nearly 50. There are also benefits to taking a long, 47 path to self-fulfillment. Remember that age 48 brings wisdom, resilience, self-knowledge, and creativity.
That said, once you’ve decided to embark on the journey, it may take years, if not longer, to reach your 49 . But as research has shown, small daily changes can have a compound effect and slowly but 50 lead you closer to the person you think you ought to be.

We are increasingly learning that our guts (肠胃) and our brains are intimately linked. But while there has been extensive research into how our diets can accelerate brain aging, less is known about the foods that can prevent cognitive 1 .
“The 2 field of Nutritional Cognitive Neuroscience uncovers specific foods and nutrients that promote brain health across the lifespan,” Aron Barbey, director of the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, told Newsweek. “Central to this effort is the discovery of nutrient profiles that can be used in nutritional interventions 3 at enhancing brain health.”
In a new study, published in the journal Nature Aging, Barbey, Jisheng Wu, and Christopher Zwilling used state-of-the-art technology to establish a set of specific nutrient profiles associated with better cognitive performance in adults over the age of 65, offering a 4 path towards designing nutritional interventions to promote healthy brain aging.
The study involved 100 cognitively healthy participants aged 65 to 75. The analysis 5 two types of brain aging among the participants: accelerated and slower than expected. And those with slower brain aging had a distinct nutritional profile. The researchers said that this nutritional profile is closely linked with nutrients found in the Mediterranean diet, which has 6 been associated with healthy brain aging.
The Mediterranean diet is 7 by a diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and olive oil, with a moderate intake of cheese and fish and a limited intake of red and processed meat. This study provides a more 8 analysis of these associations.
“First, it’s one of the largest and most comprehensive studies to use blood-based biomarkers to investigate the 9 between diet and brain health,” he said. “Second, it goes beyond traditional cognitive tests by employing multimodal neuroimaging measures, and provides a more complete picture of brain health.”
However, Barbey noted that further research was needed to confirm these results. Observational studies like this one need to be followed by controlled trials conducted 10 to confirm the effectiveness of the identified nutrient profile in promoting brain health.

VR surgery
Richard Satava, a program manager for advanced medical technologies, has been a driving force bringing virtual reality to medicine, where computers create a “virtual” environment for surgeons.
“With virtual reality we’ll be able to put a surgeon in every trench(战壕),” said Satava. He 11 a time when soldiers who are wounded fighting overseas are put in mobile surgical units equipped with computers.
The computers would convey images of the soldiers to surgeons back in the U. S. The surgeons would look at the soldier through virtual reality helmets that contain a small screen 12 the image of the wound. The doctors would 13 robotic instruments in the battlefield mobile surgical unit that operate on the soldier.
Although Satava’s vision may be years away from standard 14 procedure, scientists are progressing toward virtual reality surgery. Engineers in California are developing a tele-operating device. As surgeons watch a 3D image of the surgery, they move instruments connected to a computer, which passes their movements to robotic instruments that perform the surgery. The computer provides 15 to the surgeon.
The technological 16 may not yet be part of the community hospital setting. However, with the passage of time, some of the machinery is 17 finding its way into civilian medicine. At Wayne State University Medical School, surgeon Lucia Zamorano takes images of the brain from computerized scans and uses a computer program to produce a 3D image. She can then move the 3D image on the computer screen to 18 the shortest and least invasive surgical path to the cancer. Zamorano is also using technology that 19 a needle to surgical instruments so that she can track their positions. While cutting away a cancer deep in the brain, she watches the movement of her surgical tools in a computer graphics image of the patient’s brain taken before surgery.
During these procedures surgeons are wearing 3D glasses for a better view. And they are commanding robot surgeons to cut away tissue more 20 than human surgeons can.
Satava says, “We are in the midst of a fundamental change in the field of medicine.”

Why different species start looking exactly the same
Is it better to stand out from the crowd or be similar to the background? For birds, the answer is complicated. While peacocks(孔雀) show off their brightly colored feathers to attract mates and ward off predators(捕食者), other birds find it 1 to hide themselves by imitating the looks of other birds.
Groups of birds flying together often come from the same species, making it hard to 2 one from another. However, some groups of birds including two or more species take on similar 3 , which is an uncommon phenomenon. “They all share random features, like feathers on head or yellow bellies(腹部), which makes them almost 4 . You can’t really tell them apart without looking at their 5 .” says Scott Robinson, a famous scholar. His new study suggests 6 another bird’s appearance is not a coincidence(巧合) but rather an evolutionary method to increase their chances of survival. Looking like a bird from a dominant species helps reduce attack from other members and appear more 7 to potential predators.
“In imitation, you often want to look like something because there’s an advantage to being that other thing. You want species to think you’re 8 or low-profitable target.” says Rebecca Kimball, a professor of biology. “In grouping birds, one idea is that this has more to do with a predator’s ability to 9 a target. When there are a group of birds moving around, it may be easier for predators to identify an individual that has a distinct color pattern.”
While it may not seem like it at first, imitating other birds is helping to create more 10 species. Not only do birds imitate more than one species as they grow up, but their appearance varies over time.

Taking a Wrong Turn
The word “overcapacity” has recently gained attention after US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen claimed that China has caused “overcapacity” in the new energy sector, including electric vehicles(EVs) and lithium batteries (锂电池).
1 put, “overcapacity”, in Yellen’s words, refers to producing too many goods, which could lead to global price distortions and affect businesses and workers in other countries. However, this viewpoint is 2 and lacks evidence.
Contrary to concerns about “overcapacity”, global production in the new energy sector is actually at “undercapacity” — production is insufficient to meet demand. Data from the International Energy Agency showed that global demand for new energy vehicles(NEVs)is 3 to reach 45 million units by 2030, 4.5 times the 2022 levels.
The idea that China has 4 new energy products at low prices is also incorrect. Chinese NEVs are sold at higher prices overseas than in China, and despite this, their sales continue to grow rapidly. Even the US magazine The Atlantic admitted, “Chinese electric vehicles are cheap, stylish, and high quality… Instead, the White House is going out of its way to keep Chinese EVs out of the US.”
These observations indicate that the pricing and sales of new energy products are 5 by international market supply and demand, rather than being only affected by the so-called “overcapacity” caused by China.
Moreover, China’s over 60 percent 6 of the global power battery market comes from its focus on technological innovation and high-quality production, not low-cost 7 .
“The purpose of technological innovation has never been to widen global differences,” Zeng Yuqun, founder and CEO of CATL, a leading company in new energy innovative technologies, told 21st Century Business Herald. “For China’s power batteries, technological innovation has 8 progress; green development has sustained growth, and technological 9 is the goal,” Zeng added.
While China focuses on innovation and quality, the US is 10 with a “100-percent Made in America” goal. The Biden administration plans to subsidize (补贴) US businesses and promote the use of domestic materials to achieve this goal.

Reducing traffic crashes should be among the nation’s highest 1 . Behind each one lie many human errors. People get behind the wheel when they are drunk or sleepy, and they text or talk on their phones instead of paying attention to the road. Or they simply 2 road conditions.
Enormous work has gone into reducing these human errors. But data from Waymo, Alphabet’s self-driving car unit, suggests that a better strategy might be to take the driver out of the picture and let vehicles be 3 by machines that will never get distracted or drunk, or be 4 to break traffic laws because they’re running late.
Waymo robotaxis have logged 33 million miles and the company’s figures show that Waymo robotaxi vehicles deliver 5 better safety performance. Compared with cars driven by humans, Waymo vehicles have been involved in 62 percent fewer police-reported crashes and 78 percent fewer crashes that resulted in injury. Timothy B.Lee, author of the Understanding AI newsletter, pointed out the crashes “were mostly low-speed collisions (碰撞)” that 6 no serious safety risk. “A large majority appeared to be the 7 of the other driver,” Lee said.
It’s too early to know how much self-driving cars could reduce 8 crashes. But it’s reasonable to hope that Waymo will prove safer than human drivers. Governments at all levels should be rushing to knock down regulatory 9 that stand in the way of faster adoption of driverless cars while also ensuring that the companies meet the highest standards for safety and accountability.
In early January, the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association released a proposed policy framework that aims to speed the 10 . The association also calls for a national safety database to provide a better view of crash incidents involving self-driving cars.

Zheng Qinwen has become the second Chinese to ever reach a major singles final after Li Na’s pioneering triumph at the Australian Open a decade ago. So close to the championship and so disappointed! Yet, it is with so much pride that we can reflect on the journey of a Grand Slam champion in the 11 . Despite her tough final loss to defending champion Aryna Sabalenka, the tennis 12 Zheng’s amazing run at the Australian Open has served up another major boost for the sport in China.
An aggressive talent, 13 championship dreams since watching Li in 2014, Zheng was one step away from having her own name on the same trophy, as she started battle against the mighty Sabalenka on Saturday evening, 14 by an enthusiastic Chinese crowd at the Rod Laver Arena and the entire tennis community back home.
Two sets and 76 minutes later, Zheng’s first Grand Slam final ended in an alert reality 15 that, the 21-year-old still has plenty of catching up to do before reaching the very top of the game, technically and mentally, even though she 16 the world top 10. It is a must because, if one loses, there must be a reason behind it. Zheng has to try to figure out why, and then she will come back stronger and better next time.
Coming up just one step short of the 17 prize, Zheng held back tears at the award ceremony while gazing at the trophy when Sabalenka lifted it for a second time in a row. She 18 how much better she could have done during the postmatch interviews, even with media all greeting her with words of encouragement. Nothing seemed enough to satisfy the ambitious competitor, who’s already achieved many “firsts” for Chinese tennis over the past two weeks.
With Zheng leading the way, China will have seven female players ranked within the top 100. This progress owes a lot to Li’s 19 career, which helped encourage Zheng’s generation to dream bigger. Witnessing the collective rise of the next generation, Li said she can rest 20 that the game’s future is in good hands.

Enjoying Your Life’s Pauses
Each country has its own secret to happiness. If “pyt”, which closely means “don’t worry about it and stuff happens”, explains a relaxed attitude of Danish people, “niksen” will reveal how Dutch people fight stress and burnout in a fast-paced lifestyle.
The term “Niksen” 21 from the Dutch word “niks”, which refers to “nothing”. Mindfulness, another welcome subject to help people have a 22 mind. But unlike mindfulness, niksen is not about 23 on the present moment. It’s about letting yourself do nothing, and allowing your mind to run free without expectation.
In practice, this means “hanging around, looking at your surroundings, or listening to music as long as it’s without purpose,” according to Time Magazine.
Niksen sounds 24 to the advice we were all given as kids. Nowadays, we’re 25 told to stay busy and work harder than everyone else. But niksen opposes that mentality. It offers the chance to“ 26 do nothing”, as Carolien Hamming, a coach at CSR Centrum, an organization devoted to fighting stress and burnout in the Netherlands, told Time. She thinks that niksen is essential to staying healthy, since it’s a form of mental relaxation and 27 . Just as a wild animal lies in wait for their prey, niksen seems to be a natural state of being.
For some people, niksen can mean more than just stress 28 . It’s also a means to imagine new ideas or plans. Jenny Holden, a communications expert in the UK, adds it to her daily lunch breaks. “Within 10 minutes of doing nothing-just staring and listening to myself -my head began to clear and 29 out my work and home to-do lists,” she told the Metro UK.
Above all, niksen is a suggestion for balancing work and rest. As Dutch-born writer Ogla Mecking wrote in US-based Whoolly Magazine, niksen is the “ 30 enjoyment of life’s pauses”. Everyone is encouraged to embrace your niksen moments.

Poetry is a kind of writing in which the sound and meaning of groups of words express ideas or emotion in addition to the experiences or strong feelings the writer 1 . Unlike most other forms of writing, poetry is often written in lines, rather than paragraphs. Poetry also sounds different from other forms of writing, often using rhythm and rhyme to create an interesting sound when read aloud. Poetry catches the attention of a reader because it 2 to both emotions and senses.
Sound is 3 the single most important aspect of any poem. The sound that any given word makes, or the sounds that come from specific groups of words used together, are what make poetry so unique as a form of writing. A typical story or report does not focus on the sounds that each 4 word makes when read. But poems generally contain few words, so it is important that each word plays a role in making an impact on the reader. Rhythm is the flow of sounds created by successive words in a poem. When you read a poem you can often hear this 5 pattern, or “beat” in the sounds. This is called meter.
Some of the oldest and best-known poetry in the world came from Ancient Greece. As far back as 700 BCE, poets there recited their work at public 6 and religious ceremonies. The great epic poems The Iliad and The Odyssey by Homer came from Greece. The Greeks eventually 7 Roman poets, such as Virgil, who wrote the Aeneid 30 BCE. In medieval times, poems such as Beowulf, The Divine Comedy by Dante. and The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer were written. Religion and romance became the 8 of choice for many poets at that time.
Poetry 9 even more during the Renaissance period of history, an era of many great cultural achievements. This was the period during which Shakespeare, the most well-known poet, was making his mark! Needless to say, a trend had started. Poetry has continued to grow and change as a form of 10 expression in modern times.

The Art of Blooming Late
In his teens and early twenties, Mozart had to work as an organist and concertmaster in his native Salzburg to make ends meet. Underpaid and unfulfilled, he felt a(n) burning desire to 41 more time and energy to his art. So after a period of doubt and deliberation, that’s exactly what he did. He quit his job and embarked on what turned out to be the most 42 and creative period of his life.

Your robot driver is on its way
Driving has many downsides: There’s pollution, traffic, finding a place to park. But worst of all are the crashes. In 2023, an estimated 40,990 people were killed in car crashes in the United States.
