I have a strong belief that the pain is almost gone but the feeling of success will stay forever. I was among the 38,000 runners who took part in the marathon (马拉松赛跑), the largest event of its kind in Asia.
My decision to take part in the marathon was because of the insistence (坚持) of my wife, who had run the half-marathon before. This year, she wanted me to take part along with her. Unexpectedly, her application got refused while mine got accepted.
Though I had been into fitness training before, it seemed to be a challenging task to run 21 km. I started training about 10 weeks before the day. I had made up my mind to finish the run. So I tried my best to accommodate training into my busy schedule whenever I could.
What’s more, I remembered that four weeks into my training, my shoes were worn. I searched and spent a fortune on a new pair of shoes. However, right on the first day of running with them, I felt that they were not for me. I thought that my discomfort was because the shoes were new. Eventually, I gave up on them. I even tried looking for another new pair of shoes, but couldn’t find ones that were as comfortable as my old ones.
Finally, on 16th January 2021, I ran and completed the half-marathon. And I did it in my old shoes.
Now, when I think about it, it all seems so easy. All I had to do was to picture completing the run in good time in my mind.
What I have learned from the experience is that completing a marathon is like any other goal in life—largely a mind-over-matter phenomenon(现象). In other words, unless you believe you can reach your goal, you’ve lost even before you begin. No doubt, factors such as hard work, experience and talent help to a greater or lesser degree. But without your belief that you will get there, every goal remains difficult to achieve.
4. Why did the writer take part in the marathon at first?
A. It was the largest event of its kind.
B. He had been training for a long time.
C. His wife insisted on him taking part.
D. He had run the half-marathon before.
5. What can we learn from the text?
A. The writer’s old shoes were very expensive.
B. The writer was the best among all the runners.
C. The writer tried his best to do some marathon training.
D. The writer’s fitness training before was helpful to him in the run.
6. The writer says completing a marathon is like “a mind-over-matter phenomenon” because______.
A. belief can bring you success in a marathon
B. self-confidence is the primary factor in a marathon
C. it would be easy if you made up your mind to begin it
D. to win a marathon depends on your mind, not on your shoes
7. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Practice Makes Perfect B. A Running Lesson
C. The Pain before Success D. Insist on Your Decision
C
The UK is dealing with major river issues this year. A report by the Angling Trust says this spring was the hottest and driest ever recorded, causing serious pollution in many rivers. This is especially worrying because healthy rivers are important for drinking water, wildlife, and outdoor activities.
Only 14% of the country’s rivers are in good health. The high temperatures have made chemical pollution worse, showing that climate change is putting “heavy pressure” on Britain’s waterways.
From March to June, the UK experienced extremely hot and dry weather, leading to severe ecological impacts on rivers. With temperatures higher than normal and significantly reduced rainfall, river water levels dropped sharply. This concentrated pollution from farms, urban runoff and treated wastewater worsened water quality. The results of low oxygen level, high temperatures and increased poison have caused mass fish deaths — 87 incidents reported by the Angling Trust so far this year. In extreme cases, such as the River Teme and River Redlake, emergency fish rescues were required to prevent further losses.
A study by a water testing team also found that many river water samples contained too many harmful substances. Over half had too much nitrate (硝酸盐), which makes algae (藻类) grow too fast. Algae can use up all the oxygen in the water, impairing other living things. Another harmful chemical, ammonia, was also higher than in past years, making the water quality even worse. Small insects and plants that fish rely on for food are also disappearing due to these changes.
To save water some areas like Yorkshire have banned the use of garden hoses (橡皮管). People are not allowed to water plants, wash cars, or fill pools with hoses. Those who ignore the rules may have to pay a fine of up to £1,000.
Experts said climate change is causing more hot and dry weather. This puts a lot of stress on water supplies, river animals, and the environment. The Angling Trust warns that action must be taken now — before it’s too late.
8. What worsened the river issues?
A. The extreme weather.
B. The overuse of drinking water.
C. The chemical pollution.
D. The wastewater pollution.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The method of protecting fish.
B. The impacts of weather on rivers.
C. A sharp drop in water level.
D. The fish in need of rescue.
10. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “impairing” in paragraph 4?
A. Annoying. B. Impressing.
C. Exploring. D. Hurting.
11. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To inspire people to protect wild animals.
B. To call on people to protect the rivers in the UK.
C. To inform a latest study about harmful material.
D. To encourage a positive attitude to climate change.
D
Why do we travel around the world? There are certainly as many reasons to go on a world tour as there are world travelers. And if you are reading these lines, it is because you may already have yours.
We travel to have time which we often lack (缺少) in our daily lives to admire a sunset, to meet new people, to go hiking for several days, or just to do nothing. To meet people from all over the world and to learn more about their culture and way of life are two main reasons. To gain new experiences and to get out of the well-known comfort zone are other reasons.
Now that you have a good reason and make the decision to go on a round-the-world trip, all you have to do is to prepare your trip around the world. To be honest, we love this period of travel preparations. We spend our time reading travel blogs, sharing our desires for destinations and things to do during the journey. It is a very exciting time before our journey gets started.
However, there are certainly less fun aspects of the preparations for a round-the-world trip, like the money things. You may ask yourself, “How much does a round-the-world trip cost?” The budget (预算) for such a trip will depend on many factors such as your travel style, the destinations you want to visit, activities, accommodations, airline tickets, visas and so on. But don’t worry, you don’t need to be a millionaire to go around the world.
And we’re here to help you. We have written all the important steps in preparing for a long distance trip in our new book Destination Tour du Monde.
12. Why do people travel according to the text?
A. To buy gifts. B. To enjoy the time they rarely have.
C. To avoid doing homework. D. To become travel bloggers.
13. What did the author think of the travel preparation period?
A. Difficult. B. Boring. C. Perfect. D. Amazing.
14. What should be considered in the budget for a round-the-world trip?
A. The spots you plan to visit. B. The travel blogs you follow.
C. The gifts you buy after the trip. D. The cameras you take with you.
15. What will the author probably talk about next?
A. Reasons for being a writer. B. Stories of famous travelers.
C. Planning examples in the book. D. Recommendation of restaurants.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many people believe that staying healthy requires hard exercise, but this isn’t always true. A popular fitness idea called “zone zero” shows that even very easy activities can bring great health benefits.
___16___ In heart rate training, physical activities are grouped into five levels. Zone zero is the easiest level — it includes any movement that keeps your heart rate below 50% of its highest level. Common zone zero activities include slow walking after meals, easy cycling, playing with pets, or doing light housework.
Why is this helpful? For people who sit most of the day, adding gentle movement can greatly improve blood flow, help control blood pressure, and keep blood sugar at healthy levels. Health experts say that people who start moving after sitting all day get the clearest health improvements. ___17___
Remember, zone zero should not replace harder exercise. If you already work out, it is a good addition. ___18___ It is also useful for “weekend warriors” — people active only on weekends — as it reduces the harm of sitting too long.
The best part is that it’s simple. You don’t need to overthink it. ___19___ Just move more in enjoyable ways: take the stairs, walk more, or garden. The key is to enjoy what you do and keep doing it.
In short, every movement helps you become healthier. ___20___ By adding pleasant, light activities to your daily life, you can keep healthy in an easy and enjoyable way.
A. So, what exactly is “zone zero”?
B. It helps muscle recovery on rest days.
C. You don’t need to check your heart rate often.
D. Staying healthy doesn’t require you to push too hard.
E. In fact, most professional athletes avoid such light activities.
F. However, some experts argue that its benefits are overstated.
G. Slowly, these easy activities also help with balance and make muscles stronger.
