After the knock-out Maui wildfires, people from all walks of life managed to find ways to support the victims. While many felt more comfortable giving to the Hawaii Red Cross or grassroots organizations, others wanted to donate directly to the people in need. Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson felt that way too, so they created The People’s Fund of Maui, which aims to support the displaced residents of Lahaina as they try to rebuild their lives.
“I have been meeting with people throughout the community that were impacted by the fires over the last few weeks asking what they most needed and how I could be of service,” Winfrey said in a statement. “The main thing I’ve been hearing is their concern about how to move forward under the enormous financial burden (负担). The community has come together in so many wonderful ways, and my intention is to support those impacted as they determine what rebuilding looks like for them.”
Winfrey and Johnson posted a video announcing a donation of $10 million on Instagram, and calling for those who need assistance to apply. The People’s Fund of Maui aims to provide direct relief to individuals in the form of $1,200 monthly payments for as long as possible. The recipients of this fundraiser are individuals who are over the age of 18, reside in Lahaina and Kula, and lost their homes during the fire. “We are beyond grateful to be working alongside community leaders of Maui to launch the People’s Fund of Maui,” Johnson shared in a statement. “These leaders are offering their guidance to ensure our fund can put money directly in the hands of those individuals most affected.”
Johnson, who spent some time in Honolulu as a kid, praised first responders and community members who have stepped up to the challenge. “As people around the world watched the great loss caused by the Maui wildfires, they also witnessed the great spirit of our Polynesian culture and the strength of the people of Maui,” said Johnson.

By now, we all know that the planet is facing more environmental disasters, with quick-to-disintegrate (快速瓦解的) fast fashion clothing and the industry that creates it a major reason. Need proof? Just look at the 60,000 tonne-mountain of poisonous and thrown-away clothing that is visible from space.
Now, France is taking steps to resist the supercharged way we consume clothes, with the country recently announcing it will pay all citizens a “repair bonus” for taking their clothes in to get fixed rather than throwing them in the bin.
Beginning in October, citizens who bring their clothes in for repairs will be able to claim back a € 6 to € 25 bonus, with the total payment depending on the complexity of the repair. All bonuses will be paid from a € 154 million sustainability fund the government has set aside for the next five years.
By calling on people to take their items to get fixed, the government hopes to cut fast fashion waste throughout the country and encourage customers to purchase more “virtuous” products. In other words: the government is begging you to fix your clothes, rather than continuously over-consuming the products of fast fashion sites like Shein or Boohoo.
“It could encourage exactly the people who have bought, for example, shoes from a brand that makes good-quality shoes or likewise good-quality ready-to-wear clothes to want to have them fixed instead of getting rid of them,” explained France’s junior ecology minister Bérangère Couillard, who announced the programme in Paris. “That is exactly the objective, to create a recycling economy for shoes and clothes so that products last longer, because in government we believe in the second life of a product.”
She also shared hopes that the programme will increase employment for French tailors and shoemakers. “The goal is to support those who carry out repairs,” she explained, while inviting all repair shops to join in the campaign for free.
28. What do people usually do with old clothes according to the text?
A. Throw them in the dustbins. B. Mend them in the repair shops.
C. Donate them to those in need. D. Put them away in the cupboard.
29. What does the underlined word “virtuous” probably mean in paragraph 4?
A. Fashionable. B. Convenient. C. Sustainable. D. Comfortable.
30. What does Bérangère Couillard hope will be one of the results of the programme?
A. Reducing taxes on clothing repairs. B. Encouraging the community economy.
C. Increasing sales for fast fashion brands. D. Creating jobs for tailors and shoemakers.
31. What is the best title of the text?
A. French repair shops serve people for free
B. France leads a new trend in fashion industry
C. France encourages citizens to mend clothes themselves
D. French repairing program pays people to reduce waste

Simple household chores (家务) could help prevent dementia (痴呆症) by boosting our brain size, a new study claims. Canadian scientists found older adults who spent more time on household chores showed greater brain size—a strong predictor of cognitive(认知) health. These chores-including cleaning, tidying, cooking, heavy housework and gardening—could all give the human brain a workout and prevent the condition.
“Scientists already know that exercise has a positive impact on the brain, but our study is the first to show that the same maybe true for household chores,” said study author Noah Koblinsky at Rotman Research Institute (RRI) at Baycrest in Toronto, Canada. “Highlighting the benefits of household chores may motivate older adults to be more active by providing a more realistic, low risk form of physical activity.”
The researchers looked at the links between household chores, brain volume and cognition in a group of 66 cognitively healthy older adults between 65 and 85 years of age. The participants attended three assessment visits at Baycrest Hospital in Toronto, including a health evaluation, structural brain imaging and cognitive assessment. They were asked about the time they spent on household chores, such as tidying, dusting, meal preparation and clean-up, shopping, heavy housework, gardening and yard work, home repairs and care-giving.
The researchers found that older adults who spent more time engaging in such activities had greater brain volume, regardless of how much they engaged in any form of physical exercise, such as running. As a next step, the researchers would like to assess household physical activity more objectively using wearable technology. With additional funding, they could also plan controlled trials with the aim of increasing individuals’ household activity and studying brain changes over time.
32. How does housework prevent dementia according to the new study?
A. By allowing the brain to rest. B. By increasing brain volume.
C. By monitoring daily activities. D. By predicting cognitive health.
33. What can we learn from Koblinsky’s words?
A. The old people seldom want to do housework.
B. Exercise has little positive impact on the brain.
C. Doing household chores is risky for old people.
D. The new study may encourage the old to do housework.
34. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the research?
A. Its finding. B. Its purpose. C. Its process. D. Its significance.
35. What can be inferred about the researchers from the last paragraph?
A. They want to improve their research.
B. They lack necessary financial support.
C. They refuse to organize controlled trials.
D. They consider wearable technology worthless.

The Mango Tree—A Friend of All
It was a usual cheerful and playful day for Dorothy. The only difference was that her family had shifted to a new apartment. Although she had been in the new house just two days, Dorothy had already started liking her new home very much, not only because of the spacious rooms, but also because of a large mango tree which had lovingly extended its branches across the balcony of her house. The mango tree not only gave a beautiful view but also served as a home for a large number of birds and small animals. Dorothy’s mother was also fond of plants and had kept many potted plants in the balcony.
A week passed by. On a Sunday morning, Dorothy was awakened by a loud noise in her neighbourhood. She ran towards the balcony and, to her surprise, found some people chopping (砍) off the beloved mango tree. She ran up to her mother and explained the matter.
Dorothy and her mother looked down from the balcony. They saw the women under the guidance of Mr. Denver, cutting the mango tree down. Mr. Denver was the resident of the ground floor apartment. He said angrily, “Look, I am getting this job done under my expense. This tree is blocking my view. I cannot see my car properly because of this annoying tree.” Dorothy and her mother understood that there was no point in having an argument with Mr. Denver.
From then on, Dorothy tried all possible ways to take her revenge (报复) against Mr. Denver for cutting her beloved mango tree. She did many tricks such as sticking the gum on his call ng bell, pouring sugar in his balcony to attractants, jumping on the floor to create noise, etc.
Days passed by. One morning, as Dorothy was helping her mother water the potted plants kept in the balcony, she couldn’t take here yes away from the fresh green leaves coming from the injured mango tree. Dorothy couldn’t hold her excitement and started jumping with delight.

“I have been meeting with people throughout the community that were impacted by the fires over the last few weeks, asking what they most needed and how I could be of service,” Winfrey said in a statement.

A 29. C 30. D 31. D

根据第二段“Now, France is taking steps to resist the supercharged way we consume clothes, with the country recently announcing it will pay all citizens a “repair bonus” for taking their clothes in to get fixed rather than throwing them in the bin. (现在,法国正在采取措施抵制我们过度消费服装的方式,该国最近宣布,将向所有将衣服送去修理而不是扔进垃圾箱的公民支付“维修奖金”。)”可知,人们通常把旧衣服扔到垃圾箱里。故选A项。
根据后文“In other words: the government is begging you to fix your clothes, rather than continuously over-consuming the products of fast fashion sites like Shein or Boohoo. (换句话说:政府是在求你改衣服,而不是持续过度消费Shein或Boohoo等快时尚网站的产品)”可推知,划线所在句子表达“政府希望通过呼吁人们把自己的物品拿去修理,减少全国范围内的快时尚浪费,并鼓励顾客购买更多“可持续的”的产品”之意,所以virtuous应是“可持续的”之意,和C项意思相同。故选C项。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“She also shared hopes that the programme will increase employment for French tailors and shoemakers. “The goal is to support those who carry out repairs,” she explained, while inviting all repair shops to join in the campaign for free. (她还希望该项目将增加法国裁缝和鞋匠的就业机会。她解释说:“我们的目标是支持那些进行维修的人。”她同时邀请所有的维修店免费加入这项活动。)”可知,Bérangère Couillard 希望该项目为裁缝和鞋匠创造就业机会。故选D项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Now, France is taking steps to resist the supercharged way we consume clothes, with the country recently announcing it will pay all citizens a “repair bonus” for taking their clothes in to get fixed rather than throwing them in the bin.

B 33. D 34. C 35. A

根据第三段,尤其第一句“The researchers looked at the links between household chores, brain volume and cognition in a group of 66 cognitively healthy older adults between 65 and 85 years of age. (研究人员对66名年龄在65岁至85岁之间认知健康的老年人进行了研究,研究了家务、脑容量和认知之间的联系。)”可知,本段主要讲的是研究的过程。故选C项。

Soon Dorothy’s mother brought a plant from her balcony and handed it to Mr. Denver, saying, “This plant will look beautiful in your balcony.”
Mr. Denver received Dorothy’s mother’s gift warmly with a smile. “Let’s protect the mango tree together. I am sure it will grow well again. And the plant you just gave me will also grow well.” Mr. Denver said. Dorothy stood smiling and looking at all these and admired the peaceful way her parents had chosen to save the mango tree.
