Passage 2
At top universities, there’s a phenomenon known as “Stanford Duck Syndrome (综合征)”. Like ducks, students appear to move gracefully (优雅地). However, beneath the surface, they’re kicking hopelessly to keep up.
Experts from Stanford’s Health Services explored this troubling trend: during the day, many Stanford students are seen socializing in cafés, seemingly without any stress or the need to study. However, at night, they start studying, sometimes for the entire night, trying to maintain the image of effortless success. This comes at a high price: tiredness and anxiety are widespread. Furthermore, it leads to a common wrong idea: true talents achieve success effortlessly, while those working hard are less capable.
In an effort to challenge this misconception (误解), researchers designed an experiment. Participants were asked to observe a series of colors carefully while scientists tracked their brain activity throughout the process. The experiment was divided into two parts: one with easily recognized colors and the other with colors that were quite similar, requiring more effort to recognize. As the difficulty of the task increased, there was a noticeable increase in brain activity, particularly in areas linked to memory and abstract reasoning.
The study shows that as tasks require more effort, more areas of the brain become engaged. Growth doesn’t come from talent alone but from the continuous application of effort. Our brain functions like a muscle. Without effort, even our inborn talents will disappear over time.
This pushes us to reconsider the culture behind that might lead to this phenomenon. Instead of focusing too much on outcomes or singing high praise for inborn talents, we should emphasize the learning process and continuous improvement. By encouraging a culture that values effort, we can help students realize that intelligence is not fixed but grows through hard work. Such a change would not only reduce the pressures related to the “Stanford Duck Syndrome”, but also have a big effect on personal development and the future of education.
4.What phenomenon does the “Stanford Duck Syndrome” probably describe?
A.Hiding hard work to appear naturally gifted. B.Relieving stress through social activities.
C.Showing graceful images to attract others. D.Choosing effort over well-being.
5.What is the author’s main concern about “Stanford Duck Syndrome”?
A.It causes stress and false ideas about success.
B.It values the learning process over outcomes.
C.It prevents students from recognizing their talents.
D.It makes students value socializing more than studying.
6.How does the experiment in paragraph 3 challenge misconception?
A.By linking color recognition to intelligence. B.By proving focus improves brain function.
C.By showing effort activates the brain activity. D.By connecting careful observation with talent.
7.Which of the following might the author agree with?
A.Fortune prefers those with a clear mind. B.Work in silence and let success make the noise.
C.Hard work is the seed that grows into success. D.Keep moving forward even when no one sees it.
Passage 3
Whenever I think of Ms. Anita Moore, I always smile and feel fortunate to have her as my teacher. All of her students knew she loved being a teacher. Her classroom was always a safe place where we were encouraged to share, think, and express ourselves.
One of the memories that always stuck with me was a reading class when Ms. Moore read a story aloud and started to cry. The main character in the story reminded her of her grandmother. She paused to share about her relationship with her grandmother and made the connection as to how that relationship helped understand the story.
Ms. Moore tried her best to make a connection with each student in her classroom. She knew what we liked and used that information to bring our interests into the classroom. She brought various types of books to our classroom and allowed us to take them home. It was she that helped my love for reading grow.
Ms. Moore also went beyond classroom instruction. She decided that our school should have a choir and that all of her students should audition. Without her, I would never have taken part in this type of after-school activity. Once it was time for the annual 5th-grade weekend camping trip, my parents refused to let me attend. Ms. Moore came to my home to persuade them.
Ms. Moore was a wonderful example of a caring teacher. From her, I’ve learned to make connections with students and look for ways to help them learn and feel successful.
8.Why did Ms. Moore cry in the reading class?
A.The story was too sad.
B.She was moved by the students.
C.She thought of her own grandmother.
D.She helped her students understand the story.
9.What can we learn about Ms. Moore from Paragraph 3?
A.She was good at writing books.
B.She inspired the writer’s love for reading.
C.She donated many books to poor students.
D.She was the favorite teacher of the whole class.
10.Which of the following words best describe Ms. Moore?
A.Responsible and caring. B.Positive and independent.
C.Inspiring and strict. D.Knowledgeable and confident.
11.What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage?
A.To express opinions on teaching literature.
B.To discuss how to become a caring teacher.
C.To introduce the classes and activities in her school.
D.To share her memory about her teacher, Ms. Anita Moore.
Passage 4
It’s not uncommon for college students to graduate with regrets, wishing they had done this or hadn’t done that. We all have regrets in life. But luckily, some of those regrets can be passed on to others so that they can learn from them. Since my time at college isn’t quite over, I sit down with several college graduates to make a list of what I think students most commonly wish they had known during their time in college.
When we get to college, our main focus is often on our Grade Point Average (GPA) and succeeding academically with As across the board. This is not a bad thing, especially if you plan to go further in your education than a bachelor’s degree. However, most college graduates have discovered that in the business world, once you graduate from college, your grades mean absolutely nothing. It doesn’t matter whether you got an A or a C. What’s really important is the skills you developed and what you can bring to a company.
Your professors are not just there to give lectures and hand out papers; they are there to help you succeed. Just ask them for help if you have any question, because it’s their job. It may be frightening at first, but if you’re struggling in the course, you will overcome that fear and make great progress.
Internships (实习) are your best assets (财富) in the professional world. The contacts you develop through professional development and networking opportunities are your gateways to good jobs out of college. Not only do they make your resume look great, but they also provide hands-on experience in your field. Talk to your counselors about internships in your field of interest, and they will help find the best one for you.
Clubs, programs and campus activities provide lasting friendship and precious memories for you. There are more than just grades and an overloaded backpack in college. College is a great time to get a little crazy and live out of your comfort zone. So get involved, take risks and live life to the fullest.
12.What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 2?
A.Succeeding academically with As is important.
B.Companies care about your achievements at college.
C.Many college students attach little importance to grades.
D.College students should focus on learning instead of grades.
13.What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.To get over fear. B.To give lectures.
C.To hand out papers. D.To ask professors for help.
14.What can we know about internships from Paragraph 4?
A.Internships are more important than grades.
B.Internships are necessary for college graduates.
C.Internships can help you find your true interest.
D.Internships can make you succeed in job interviews.
15.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Good ways to enjoy your campus life
B.Activities college graduates should be involved in
C.Things college graduates wish they had known
D.Reasons why some college students graduate with regrets
Passage 1
Dear Chicklet,
You made it. After many years of working hard and doing your best, you are now a high school senior. You’ve overcome many challenges. You took special training for four years to help you speak more smoothly. You worked hard with a teacher to improve your math grades. You had the courage to speak up for yourself when you were placed in classes that you felt were not the best for your coursework. You created the school’s first newspaper and successfully became its editor-in-chief.
Your drive to be outstanding was clear back in grade school, and it has continued to help you succeed in middle and high school. I am so proud of your growth and your determination. This past year and a half have been terrible, but you always looked on the bright side and stayed hopeful. You helped me to be that way, too.
I love watching you grow into the wonderful young woman you are, and I know that your senior year is going to be amazing. You are so focused and so on point that I look up to you for that. Never lose that.
Keep marching to the beat of your own drum (鼓) with your unique tastes and style. What makes you different is going to take you far and I love that you are not afraid to be yourself and don’t just try to fit in for the sake (好处) of being like everyone else. You never have been that way.
Hold your head up high and walk into this new school year with grace and a full heart. We are so very proud of you. Miss Independent, Little Miss Sunshine, Chicklet, and Favorite Daughter, I’m sure that your senior year will be one of happiness, joy, hard work, and peacefulness for you.
I can’t wait to see you shine throughout your 12th grade year.
Love,
Mom

Passage 2
It was a normal school day for senior Solymar Solis until an unexpected visitor arrived. Her dad, Sgt Carlos Solis Melendez, surprised her by coming home early from Kuwait and visiting her unannounced at Spring Valley High School in South Carolina.
After serving in Kuwait for nine months, Melendez returned home a week earlier than his daughter expected. He held balloons and flowers in a classroom as he sat at a student’s desk to blend in with the crowd. “It came across my mind like, ‘How is she going to react?’,” he recalled the heartwarming moment. “Is she going to be happy and run to me and hug me, or cry? That was all going on through my mind.”
As unsuspecting Solymar entered the classroom, she sat down and took out her books. But at the sight of her father, she was soon overcome with emotion, immediately bursting into tears and covering her mouth. She didn’t talk. She was just crying. She was overwhelmed with everything. She thought it was a dream.
Melendez was a single parent so while he was deployed (调度), he got his sister to live with his daughter. When he was coming back and talking to his sister, both of them came to the conclusion that they should do something special for his daughter. Melendez and his sister got in touch with the school, and they planned the whole being-in-the-classroom thing, and it turned out perfect.
The two are very much looking forward to some good daddy-daughter time now that he’s home. “It means everything,” Melendez said of being able to surprise his daughter this way. “After all the sacrifices she’s made, she deserves all the special arrangements and special occasions and celebrations. Passage 3
My father loved lists. Over 25 years, he recorded 539 books he read and 322 episodes of Booknotes on C-SPAN, which he watched every Sunday night. He also kept grocery lists for his mini-fridge — Pepsi, coffee, heavy cream — and daily tasks. These notes filled small notebooks, always near his reading chair. He wrote them until December 31, 2004, when cancer stopped him. After his death, I gathered the notebooks into a box. For years, I couldn’t bear to open them.
Born in 1927 in Lowell, Massachusetts, my father was the son of a leather factory worker and grandson of an Irish immigrant who cleaned horse manure from the streets. Despite his humble beginnings, he was brilliant. After a summer in the leather factory, he graduated from high school at 16 and went on to Boston College. He served in World War II and later earned degrees in physics. Then he worked at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory, moved his family from Lowell to Boston, and sent his kids to private colleges. It seemed he had left Lowell behind — but not so. Deep down, he saw himself simply as a working-class Lowell kid who had just read a lot of books.
He didn’t travel much, and didn’t feel the need. When I asked if he regretted not seeing the world, he defended himself: “I’ve sailed the Atlantic in stormy winds, climbed the Himalayas, and stared down wild animals.” Then he added, “I read.” Books were his world. From them, he learned to survive landslides, shark attacks, and even gorilla attacks. He had what he called “a rich inner life” and it was true.
Shortly before his death, he opened a small purple notebook and began one last list. It described details from 1930s Lowell — things lost in time. Twenty years later, I found it. In his flowing handwriting, Dad reached back to Lowell — a time long gone, now captured only in memory. Lost and only in memory — that was how I was experiencing Dad now. Squinting my eyes, I saw not just the city he loved, but the quiet, extraordinary man I called Dad.
9.Why are the details of the father’s lists mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.To imply his fear of forgetting. B.To show his dependence on control.
C.To reflect his ordered and thoughtful life. D.To show his love for literature and cuisine.
10.What can we learn about the author’s father from paragraph 2?
A.He stayed humble and rooted all the time.
B.He was the son of a horse manure cleaner.
C.He assumed that a private college outweighed a public one.
D.He owed his degrees in physics to his brilliance and ambition.
11.What do the father’s words in paragraph 3 mainly show?
A.His pride in inner journeys. B.His desire for real adventures.
C.His experience of global travel. D.His escape from physical world.
12.Which of the following is the theme of the passage?
A.Loss and regret. B.Pursuit and action.
C.Memory and identity. D.Ambition and escape.
Passage 4
A radio show host recently asked me what kind of parent I am. I told him I try to be a lifeguard parent. Lifeguard parents keep an eye on what’s going on with their kids, ready to help if necessary, but stay out of the way when there is no need. Lifeguard parenting is described as a form of care with three stages — open attention, focused attention and active intervention (干涉).
Open attention should be a parent’s default (默认的) state. They care about what their child is doing while staying away from them. They let the child operate independently, though their child may get into a play which includes uncertain results and possibility of physical danger. In this state, a sense of trust develops between parents and children, and parents are likely to feel amazed by what their child can do.
Focused attention kicks in when parents notice warning signs. They might communicate with their child, reminding them to think through their actions without explicitly telling them what to do. For example, the parent might say, “Do you think that branch (树枝) can support you?” instead of shouting, “Stay off that branch”.
Finally, active intervention happens when parents recognize that they must step into a situation to protect their child. One mother told me about her active intervention, which she calls the red-white-blue rule: Only intervene if you see red blood, white bone or blue bruises (瘀伤). Maybe she was joking, but the point is, kids grow up well when parents provide a safe environment and then get out of the way.
The goal is to spend most of the time in open attention. Focused attention might happen only once every few days, and active intervention should be seldom. I’d love to see “lifeguard parenting” become something we all recognize as being a happy way to raise kids. Kids can do so much more than we expect if they are given the chance.
13.What do parents do in the state of open attention?
A.They respect kids’ independence. B.They play together with kids.
C.They amaze kids with full attention. D.They protect kids from potential dangers.
14.What does the underlined word “explicitly” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Politely. B.Patiently. C.Directly. D.Confidently.

A.To explain the timing of active intervention.
B.To show the value of active intervention.
C.To stress the safety of active intervention.
D.To draw readers’ attention to active intervention.
16.What effect may lifeguard parenting have according to the last paragraph?
A.Kids can show potential abilities. B.Parents can live a traditional life.
C.Kids can learn from lifeguards. D.Parents can have full control over kids.
Passage 1
Attending a networking event at a restaurant to make small talk with strangers in hopes of making lasting connections is one of the most frightening things that I can imagine doing. When I went to these events, I was uncertain about how to connect with others.
I spent my 20’s and 30’s collecting and studying books on how to network, form friendships and build character. Yet, my networking skills didn’t improve at all.
There had to be a better way to build relationships. Carol Blymire, my instructor at Georgetown University, showed me that there was, according to her, the best way to build your network while also making friends is to join groups that focus on your hobbies. “For example, if you like to go swing dancing, you should join a swing dancing group,” Blymire told me. So I decided to start a book club that would put book lovers like me in the same room together.
I posted the notice of my first weekly meeting on Meetup.com in April 2022. Luckily, my two invited friends came, and we were joined by one other person we didn’t know. After the first event, more people started coming, and I started making new friends almost immediately. Then, in early October 2022, I hosted a party for my book club friends. 24 people showed up and I was excited. Today, close to 700 people have joined my Meetup group. I have made lots of connections within the first year alone.
My experience as a meeting organizer has taught me that I shouldn’t judge (判断) how connected I am to the world around me based on the number of people I know, but by the quality of my friendships. Building friendships takes time and effort, but I’ve discovered that it is possible to make real friends as an adult. One of the friends I made at my book club even toasted (为……举杯敬酒) my wife and me at our wedding (婚礼).
1.What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A.He was interested in network technology. B.He wrote a book about his experience.
C.He hated eating in restaurants. D.He had poor social skills.
2.What did the author do after chatting with Blymore?
A.He applied for her university. B.He set up his own book club.
C.He started learning swing dancing. D.He joined a chat group of old friends.
3.How has the author’s Meetup group turned out?
A.It has been growing fast. B.It has made a lot of money.
C.It faces an uncertain future. D.It is receiving some questions.
4.What lesson has the author drawn from organizing meetings?
A.Adults can develop beautiful friendships.
B.Adults have more difficulty making friends.
C.Friendship is as important in quality as it is in number.
D.Friends in the same age group can stay close for longer.
Passage 2
It’s very common to lose touch with someone you consider a friend. In a 2024 study, 90 percent of participants admitted they had let an old friendship go. Most further claimed that they were not sure whether their friend would actually like to hear from them again.
But that wasn’t the only obstacle. In two follow-up studies, the research team identified a group of about 1,000 participants altogether who were in a good spot to reach out. They had someone in mind they thought would be glad to hear from them. They wished to reconnect as well and had contact information. Surprisingly, even after being prompted by the study, only a third of this group actually reached out.
Why might that be? One possibility is that the old friend felt like a stranger, and you aren’t comfortable talking to strangers. When the team introduced an exercise that made people feel less shy about talking to a stranger, they also became more likely to reach out to the old friend.
There are many other possibilities. You might be shy in general. You might be busy and tired in your free time. You might be satisfied with your family life or feel you need to give your spouse or children more of your attention. Perhaps you are a little embarrassed by how your life has turned out. In any of those circumstances, why should you push yourself to make the effort?
Why reaching out to old friends is worth it. Most of us understand that strong relationships make us happier and healthier. You might think that one or two stable bonds are enough. However, research suggests that people with a bigger network tend to be happier, especially in later life.
It also helps to have a diverse network of people who live in different places, know you in different ways, or vary in age or interests. Although having a strong marriage or tie with a sibling is priceless, it’s best to be able to turn to a range of people to fill different needs. A diversified friend group is like having a diversified group of mutual funds. When one goes down, the other might be going up.
If you’re feeling excited about seeing your old camp buddies, reach out.
5.According to the passage, what was the surprising finding of the follow-up studies?
A.People were too shy to talk to strangers.
B.About 90% of people have let an old friendship go.
C.Most people don’t have their old friends’ contact information.
D.Only about 30% of the participants actually contacted their old friend.
6.What does “spouse” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.A close old friend.
B.A husband or wife.
C.A parent or child.
D.A teacher or classmate.
7.What is the author’s attitude towards reconnecting old friends?
A.Supportive. B.Opposed. C.Neutral. D.Indifferent.
8.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Family bonds are considered more important than friendships.
B.Career achievements outweigh maintaining social connections.
C.Reconnecting with past companions benefits personal well-being.
D.People should avoid rebuilding former relationships intentionally.
Passage 3
Growing up with movies such as “High School Musical” and “Grease”, which presented the ideal (理想的) high school friendships, we sometimes expect a perfect relationship. Indeed, some high school friendships can be real and simple; while still some high school students will meet a friend who causes trouble. With failed friendships come lessons and experiences learned for the future. You will know the influence after you leave high school.
“I was always worried about what my friends thought about me. Sometimes my friends would make fun of what I wore or what I would do. I always tried to get along well with them, but I realized how happy I was once I stopped contacting them after high school,” said Elisha, Class of 2020.
Most teens have not realized the big question when dealing with high school problems. In five years, will this still matter? It is hard looking at the big picture when the problems are in front of you, which is understandable. However, most teens need a moment to reflect (反思) and question if the problem matters in a long time.
Briana, a high school teacher, said, “Now, I am in contact with two high school friends. I think the friendship experiences I had in high school shaped who I am because I learned to be open-minded and befriend all kinds of people. I learned to see people for who they are, not what they wear or who they play with. I learned most of all how to be a good friend.”
High school is a small part of your life, but it has a huge influence on who you will become and where you will go. Friendships and relationships help shape who you are, whether they are good or bad. Lessons are brought, and lessons are learned.
9.Why did the author use the two movies in the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic of the passage. B.To explain what a high school friendship is.
C.To recommend these two movies to readers. D.To show the diversity of high school friendship.
10.What did Elisha think of her “friends”?
A.They made her feel blue. B.They cared about her behavior.
C.They got along well with her. D.They were always worried about her.
11.Why did Briana think her friendship experiences shape her?
A.She learned to play with her friends. B.She learned to make different friends.
C.She learned to shape her friends’ minds. D.She learned to wear just like her friends.
12.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.Failed friendships made teens worried. B.Good friendships greatly influenced teens.
C.High school friendships help to shape teens. D.Friendships are difficult for teens to deal with.
Passage 4
The philosopher Aristotle said, “Wishing to be friends is quick work, but friendship is a slow ripening (成熟) fruit.” Friendship is important for humans, but it takes time to develop a friendship.
Friendship can be neglected easily. According to the Gallup Organization’s director, Tom Rath, we usually realize the value of friendship during difficult times. In his book, Vital Friends: The People You Can’t Afford To Live Without, Rath makes the point that if you ask people why they become homeless, why their marriage fails or why they overeat, they often say it is because of the poor quality of friendship. They feel unloved. Rath undertook a lot of study on friendship. His work resulted in some surprising statistics (统计数据): If your best friend eats healthily, you are five times more likely to have a healthy diet. Married people say friendship is more than five times as important as physical intimacy (亲密关系) within marriage. Those who say they have no real friends at work have only a one-in-twelve chance of feeling engaged in their job. On the contrary, if you have a “best friend at work”, you are seven times more likely to feel engaged in your job.
British writer Mark Vernon found support for this idea. Oscar Wilde also supported the selfless aspect of true friendship when he said, “Anybody can feel sorry for the sufferings of a friend, but it needs a very fine nature to enjoy a friend’s success.” In his search for the essence (本质) of friendship, Vernon explored a lot of words from well-known people. For example, Ralph Emerson said, “A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere.” Vernon’s book, The Philosophy of Friendship, makes the point that we have now known that money does not buy happiness. He suggests that we learn from Aristotle and spend at least a fifth of our time with our friends.
13.Aristotle’s words are mentioned in Paragraph 1 to show _______.
A.friendship gets broken easily.
B.friendship cannot be created quickly.
C.friendship has positive influences on humans.
D.friendship normally doesn’t exist between men and women.
14.What does the underlined word “neglected” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A.ignored. B.misunderstood.
C.remembered. D.cheated.
15.According to Tom Rath, many people’s problems are caused by ________.
A.the bad health conditions.
B.the friendship of poor quality.
C.the bad work environment.
D.the stress from their family.
16.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.The benefits of friendship. B.The tips on choosing friends.
C.The importance of friendship. D.The different opinions on friendship.
Passage 1
Lisa has several fat family members, so she always believed she was sure to be fat. As a mother of three children from Rapid City, South Dakota, Lisa was already over 200 pounds when she started having children, but six months later her weight brought her up to 304 pounds.
After having her second child, she knew she wanted to make a change. Some of Lisa’s family members had chosen to receive weight loss surgery, but had all ended up getting their weight back. So she decided to choose a different way. Lisa knew she had never kept exercising in the past because she would get bored when she repeated the same actions. When she started following Jillian’s fitness plan, she finally found a fitness program that she could stick to. “Jillian’s fitness plan is always fun and I look forward to doing it,” she says. “Right when I would be getting the hang of one action, another would come out, so I never get bored.”

Now as a fit person she still does the same exercise she did as a 300-pound person. She has reached the request of the highest intensity level!

Passage 2
Many of us start exercising in the hope of losing unwanted pounds. Unquestionably, aiming to be more active is a good thing. But if the main reason is to lose weight, your resolution could very well come to nothing.
For starters, exercise is typically futile for weight loss. Take walking for example. A 150-pound person who walks for 30 minutes will burn, on average, around 140 calories. That’s equal to one can of soda — not exactly a great return on your investment (投入,投资) of time and effort. It’s much easier just to skip the soda.
When exercise is added to a diet, the results are equally unimpressive. Researchers found that a combination of dieting and exercising produced no greater weight loss than dieting alone after six months. At 12 months, the diet-and-exercise combination showed an advance, but it was slight — about 4 pounds on average.
In studies where exercise has produced meaningful weight loss, participants burned at least 400 to 500 calories per session on five or more days a week. To achieve that, a 150-pound person would need to walk a minimum of 90 minutes or run 30 minutes per day. In short, sessions need to go well beyond what most of us are willing or able to do. And even if we manage to make that much effort, our bodies often compensate (弥补) by boosting (推动,促进) desire for food and slowing down metabolism (新陈代谢), which over time limit how many pounds we lose.
When exercise fails to meet our weight-loss expectations, we often stop working out. Perhaps the biggest problem with exercising to drop pounds is that it turns physical activity into punishment — a price we have to pay for a slimmer body. How many times have you heard someone say “I’ll need to do extra exercise” after eating too much? We treat exercise as a form of self-punishment for being “bad”. In this case, we’re unlikely to keep doing it for very long. The conclusion is that we’re more likely to treat exercise positively and actually do it when we focus on our well-being rather than our weight.
5.What does the underlined word “futile” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.necessary B.useless C.basic D.painful
6.Compared with dieting alone, what can we learn about the combination of dieting and exercising?
A.It’s less effective than dieting alone.
B.It’s much more useful within six months.
C.It shows little advantage after six months.
D.It displays an impressive advantage after a year.
7.Why does the body’s compensation mechanism affect weight loss?
A.It increases food desire and slows down metabolism.
B.It makes people burn more calories during exercise.
C.It helps people do more exercise to lose weight.
D.It makes people pay more attention to their well-being.
8.What is true according to the passage?
A.Exercise is not useful at all for people to lose weight.
B.Dieting is the only effective way to lose weight.
C.The body’s metabolism plays a key role in weight loss.
D.Focusing on well-being rather than weight helps people keep exercising.
Passage 3
If we need to select a key expression for recent years, “weight management” could be the most popular one. Designed to encourage healthy living habits among staff workers, a “million-yuan weight loss” activity started by Shenzhen-based technology company Insta360 has attracted public attention. The company is offering all employees who register 500 yuan in cash for every half kilogram they lose.
This year, a post-2000s employee surnamed Xie signed up for the activity and lost 20 kilograms in just 90 days, earning 20,000 yuan in cash and winning the title of “weight-loss champion.” Xie said that during the competition she strictly controlled her diet and exercised for an hour and a half every day, finally achieving an amazing change.
When asked how she stayed determined and whether she had considered giving up, she smiled and said, “I think now is the best time in my life to become the best I can be — not just for beauty, but also for health.” She also shared actor Qin Hao’s weight-loss method in the company group chat to encourage colleagues caught in a stop with their weight loss.
Since the event began, the company’s “million-yuan weight loss” challenge has been held for seven rounds, awarding about 2 million yuan in total prizes. Over the past year, 99 employees have taken part, losing a total of 950 kilograms and sharing 1 million yuan in cash rewards. “We hope the ‘million-yuan weight loss’ challenge promotes healthy living and encourages employees to pay more attention to their health outside of work. It’s also a way to inspire everyone to face work and life with a positive attitude,” the event organizer said.
The challenge also includes a “betting” rule — participants who regain weight must pay 800 yuan for each half kilogram gained. So far, no one has regained weight and been penalized, Nanfang Daily reported.
9.What is the purpose of the “million-yuan weight loss” campaign?
A.To make Insta360 famous.
B.To share useful tips of weight-loss.
C.To encourage the staff to earn more money.
D.To help the employees develop healthy living habits.
10.Which of the following can be inferred about the employee Xie?
A.She cared more about beauty. B.She kept going without giving up.
C.She shared her method with no one. D.She was the first one to win the title.
11.How much weight have the employees taking part lost on average over the past year?
A.Nearly 7 kg. B.Around 8.5 kg. C.About 9.6 kg. D.Over 10 kg.
12.What does the underlined word “penalized” mean in the last paragraph?
A.Admired. B.Punished. C.Cheated. D.Honored.

Passage 1
With the seasons changing, now is the perfect time to start planning summer experiences at outdoor theatres in parks, city squares, woodlands and even the side of a cliff! We’ve put together a list of the best ones to visit across the UK.
Grosvenor Park, Chester
Every summer, Storyhouse theatre packs up their items and builds an entire amphitheatre (圆形剧场) in Grosvenor Park. This year’s programme sees an eclectic trio:
The Gangs of New York, The I’m portance of Being Earnest and The Wizard of Oz. I’m most excited by the first: a new adaptation written by Kieran Lynn and directed by John Young. I don’t think this story has ever been staged before and it seems like a wild pick for a summer outdoor show.
Minack Theatre, Cornwall
Built into a cliff face in Porthcurno, you hardly need an excuse to visit this theatre. Seeing anything at all, backgrounded by the azure Cornish sea, will be an unforgettable experience. This year sees touring productions of Little Shop of Horrors, and the less-known works of Shakespeare.
Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Highland Perthshire
Throughout most of the year, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s indoor concert hall and studio serve as their regular performance spaces. But this summer, you can see equally lavish productions at the amphitheatre, located in the woods and overlooking Ben-Y-Vrackie mountain. This year they’ll be staging Dido and Aeneas.
Shakespeare in the Squares, London
Is there anything more luxuriously summery than lazing down to your local square for a bit of Shakespeare and a picnic? These guys do what they say on the tin, travelling across the squares of London with a new Shakespeare production every year. This year will be All’s Well That Ends Well.

Passage 2
Jeff Kinney, an American writer, was born on February 19, 1971. His Diary of a Wimpy Kid series (系列) tells the stories of young Greg Heffley, a middle school student, and his many misadventures with his family and friends. The books are presented in diary form from Greg’s perspective, with basic cartoons that add to the stories' humor.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Wrecking Ball is the fourteenth book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Since its release, it has received positive reviews from critics and readers.
Greg Heffley’s aunt Reba passed away, leaving an inheritance (遗产) to his family. Greg’s mom decided to use the money to improve their house and add something to the kitchen to make it bigger. When the workers pulled down the walls, they found a lot of problems: rats, mold, etc. There was no more money left after the workers fixed what was broken. Greg’s parents decided to buy a better house with the money from selling their house. A family wanted it and gave them an offer. However, the family required some furniture should be changed. While trying to lift the hot tub, the worker made a mistake and the hot tub fell from the roof. Since the house was destroyed (破坏), the buyer pulled out and the Heffleys went back to where they started.
I am fascinated by the characters and the story and I find the book really fun! The situations Greg gets into are funny enough on their own, and the illustrations increase the laughter so much that kids and even adults might end up laughing out loud. Passage 3
In this fast-paced world, quiet moments are often spent staring at a phone screen. For those who have forgotten how to switch off and reconnect with ourselves, Deborah Alma may have just what the doctor ordered. She is the founder of The Poetry Pharmacy (药房), whose aim is to ease worry with words, allowing visitors to book poetry consultations for tailored advice or pick up a quick fix off the shelves. Last year, another Poetry Pharmacy opened its doors inside LUSH on London’s Oxford Street, seeking to bring a little calm to the capital.
Even before she had two successful “practices” under her belt, Deborah was keenly aware of the power of poetry. She noticed how it could bring people a positive change. This inspired her to become the “Emergency Poet” traveling the country in a vintage ambulance to offer poetry prescriptions (处方). The 1950s ambulance, which was bought on eBay, carried 200 poems, each with advice like “take this poem with a cup of tea” or “listen to some birdsong”.
After about a decade of mobile medicine, Deborah parked up her practice for a permanent location in Shropshire. This became the world’s first walk-in-poetry pharmacy, and-unlike the ambulance-it had central heating. From a cozy coffee corner to an inspiring physical garden, the Pharmacy is described as “a peaceful place to rest and dream”. “What happens in the shops is that people who look at pills are often buying things for others. It’s potentially a little theatre, but that act of giving and thinking about someone else is heartwarming.” The Pharmacy also provides a more personalized service. “We ask about people’s reading habits, how they relax, rather than their problems. It should be a pleasure to answer these questions,” Deborah says.
Despite never having done any online marketing, The Poetry Pharmacy has a dedicated following of creative souls, including Mark Constantine, CEO and co-founder of LUSH. We don’t know what the future holds for The Poetry Pharmacy and its founder, but one thing is certain-the next chapter is bound to be a good one!
8.How many poetry pharmacies has Deborah opened?
A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four.
9.What can possibly happen in The Poetry Pharmacy?

Passage 4
The Chinese animated (动画的) movie Ne Zha 2 has become the highest-earning animated movie of all time globally since Feb. 18. This shows how big and successful China’s movie industry can be, according to China Daily.
Masses of amazing visuals and exciting experience are key reasons for Ne Zha 2’s success. The movie has a huge challenge for any single studio. Instead of one company, 138 Chinese animation studios and over 4,000 professionals worked together to create the film, including both well-known giants and smaller studios, Beijing Daily reported.
Red Whale Studios from Suzhou worked on a quarter of the production of Ne Zha 2, making it the biggest company involved in making the movie. The beautiful scenes in the movie, like fish swimming in the waves, were created by 160 people who worked day and night for 26 months, according to the official WeChat account of the Suzhou government.
Director Yang Yu, known as Jiaozi, explained that while international teams were initially considered for special effects, the results didn’t meet the standards. “Even top studios from international teams may use less experienced employees,” he told CCTV. Instead, he decided to let domestic teams refine the effects, ensuring the project was in expert hands.
One standout example is the work with Fantawild Animation, a film company based in Shenzhen. They were responsible for creating the attractive waterfall in the forest fight scene. Waterfalls are massive in size and have complex and ever-changing flow patterns. To make the waterfall look realistic, the team used advanced physics simulation (模拟) techniques with 50 high-performance workstations to do the necessary processing. The team worked hard to ensure that the final effect was grand and consistent with the style of the waterfalls.
In the movie, Ne Zha says, “If there’s no path ahead, I will create one.” Also, 138 Chinese animation companies have come together to shape the future of Chinese animation, showing the strength and creativity of the industry.
12.What can be known about Ne Zha 2 from the passage?
A.It was produced by a Chinese film company.
B.It features a large number of visual effects.
C.It has won a good reputation in overseas markets.

13.What does the underlined word “refine” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Replace. B.Create. C.Improve. D.Increase.

A.They are determined to innovate and succeed.
B.They are eager to expand into overseas markets.
C.They hope for greater recognition of Chinese animation.
D.They are keen on promoting traditional culture.
15.Where is this passage most likely taken from?

Passage 2
Do you know Norway’s “russefeiring” celebration? High school seniors across Norway participate in this unique tradition. It’s a large-scale, four-week-long celebration marking the end of 13 years of school before the transition to higher education. It begins at the end of April and goes on until May 17. This tradition dates back to the 1900s, though it has evolved (进化) significantly ever since.
I just experienced a “russefeiring”. It started with a ceremony, where we had to drink a carbonated beverage (碳酸饮料) under 10 seconds. I didn’t make it, so my friends poured the rest over my head, leaving me totally wet. After that, I wore my “russedress”, a traditional outfit for graduates. It was bright red, with patches (补丁). I spent hours decorating it, painting my favorite bands on it and adding patches for all the places I’d visited.
Some students went further, forming big groups with their own logos, stickers and even party songs. They saved money for years to buy and fixed up old buses into party buses. I remember seeing one with a DJ and a mini-bar inside — it was like a moving club. They drove around town, stopping at all the major parties with loud music. It was like a scene from a movie.
The celebration peaked on May 17, Norway’s national day. We joined parades, gave out our business cards and celebrated the end of our school journey. We partied all night, dancing and laughing with friends. But as dawn broke, reality struck: in just a few days, we’d be sitting for our national exams. It was a reminder that the party was over, and real life was about to begin.
4.What can we learn about Norway’s “russefeiring”?
A.It lasts for three weeks. B.It is a celebration for college graduates.
C.It has stayed the same since it began. D.It has been in existence for at least decades.
5.How did students make their “russefeiring” special?
A.By changing old buses into moving party places. B.By creating logos to print on business cards.
C.By practicing party songs to perform for peers. D.By painting their favorite travel spots on outfits.
6.What would students do after the “russefeiring” peak on May 17?
A.They’d immediately start their college life. B.They’d take national exams in a short while.
C.They’d plan another party to extend the celebration. D.They’d give away their “russedresses”.
7.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Experience of Norway’s National Day parade
B.The History of Traditional Celebrations in Norway
C.A Special Celebration for Norwegian High School Seniors
D.How Norwegian Students Transform Old Buses
Passage 3
The most popular martial arts (武术) today originated in Asia, especially in China. Many martial arts were invented because people needed to defend themselves or protect others. Nowadays, people learn martial arts as a way of keeping fit or as a competitive sport, but they are still very useful for self defense.
Martial arts are often referred to as either soft or hard. These terms imply a way of dealing with your opponent’s own force. Soft martial arts, such as tai chi, teach you to use your opponent’s force to defend yourself. Soft styles allow you to use flowing movements and timing to avoid your opponent’s attacks. These martial arts are soft for the defender but not for the attacker! On the other hand, hard styles, such as kung fu, teach you to defend yourself using force. Techniques involve blocking, posturing, powerful hitting and kicking. Hard martial arts techniques are more effective if you are more skillful, more powerful and faster than your opponent.
Perhaps one of the best known Japanese martial arts today is karate. But did you know that its roots are derived from Fujian Province? In the 4th century, a community of Chinese migrants from Fujian settled in what was then the kingdom of Okinawa. The Chinese migrants used to gather in a park to enjoy cultural activities — one of which was kung fu. This soon caught the attention of local youths, who started learning kung fu from their Chinese neighbors.
In fact, Chinese influence in martial arts was not limited to kung fu. The very first Korean military training guidebook was based on a Chinese version. During the Japanese invasion of Korea in the 16th century, the Korean army needed an effective way to train a large number of troops. They adopted a training methodology (方法) from a Chinese military book called Ji Xiao Xin Shu, written by the famous Chinese general Qi Jiguang, who had himself defeated Japanese pirates.
8.Why did people invent martial arts?
A.For self-defense. B.To keep fit.
C.For competition. D.To attack others.
9.What does the second paragraph focus on about martial arts?
A.Their effects. B.Their development.
C.Their types and features. D.Their importance.
10.Who spread karate according to the text?

C.Japanese troops. D.Chinese migrants.
11.Why did the Korean army adopt a training methodology from Ji Xiao Xin Shu?
A.To draw Chinese neighbors’ attention. B.To train soldiers.
C.To enjoy cultural activities. D.To show admiration for Qi Jiguang.
Passage 4
During this year’s 8-day National Day Holiday, tourists across China enjoyed a variety of cultural activities —from traditional to modern—and discovered many new travel destinations (目的地).
Items on China’s national list of intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) were popular among travelers in many places. In Lantian County, Shaanxi Province in northwest China, tourists were surprised by the art of Dawaz, which means aerial tightrope (空中钢丝)walking in the Uygur language. At the same time, in Changzhou City in east China, music festivals attracted large crowds of visitors. The local government took steps to make visitors feel comfortable: it arranged 500 coaches for long-distance travel, set up over 10,000 free parking spaces, and extended subway operation hours until 11:30 p.m.
Big cities were not the only places attracting visitors during the holiday. Travelers preferred natural scenery, less crowded spots, and cost-effective travel experiences. Data from Ctrip(携程), a major Chinese travel booking platform, showed that travel orders for small cities rose by 140% year-on-year, which was much higher than the growth rate for big cities.
Wu Sa, a leader from the Economic Research Institute, said that big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Hangzhou and Chengdu remained popular as usual. But he also noted that many travelers were heading to new, less well-known places.
Science and space-related sites also became popular travel spots this holiday. These included the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China and the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope in Guizhou Province, southwest China. “I mainly wanted to take my child to see China’s advanced space technology and the development trend of big data, so he can understand our motherland’s advanced technology,” said a tourist named Hu Wannping.

【答案】4.A 5.A 6.C 7.C
根据第一段“Like ducks, students appear to move gracefully (优雅地). However, beneath the surface, they’re kicking hopelessly to keep up. (就像鸭子一样,学生们表面上在水面上优雅地游动,但在水面之下,他们却在拼命蹬脚以跟上节奏)”以及第二段“Experts from Stanford’s Health Services explored this troubling trend: during the day, many Stanford students are seen socializing in cafés, seemingly without any stress or the need to study. However, at night, they start studying, sometimes for the entire night, trying to maintain the image of effortless success. (斯坦福大学健康服务中心的专家研究了这一令人不安的趋势:白天,很多斯坦福学生被看到在咖啡馆里社交,似乎没有任何压力,也不需要学习。然而,到了晚上,他们开始学习,有时一整夜,试图保持毫不费力的成功形象)”可知,“斯坦福鸭综合征”指学生隐藏背后的努力,营造天生有天赋、成功毫不费力的表象。故选A项。
根据第二段“This comes at a high price: tiredness and anxiety are widespread. Furthermore, it leads to a common wrong idea: true talents achieve success effortlessly (这付出了高昂的代价:疲劳和焦虑普遍存在。此外,它还导致了一个普遍的错误观念:真正的人才毫不费力就能取得成功)”可知,作者担忧该综合征会引发学生的压力,还会传递天才无需努力的错误成功观。故选A项。
根据第三段“As the difficulty of the task increased, there was a noticeable increase in brain activity, particularly in areas linked to memory and abstract reasoning. (随着任务难度的增加,大脑活动明显增加,尤其是与记忆和抽象推理有关的区域)”以及第四段“Growth doesn’t come from talent alone but from the continuous application of effort. (成长不仅仅来自天赋,还来自持续的努力付出)”可知,实验通过监测大脑活动发现,努力会激活负责注意力的脑区,证明成功需要努力参与,从而反驳了天赋无需努力的误解。故选C项。
7.推理判断题。根据第四段“Growth doesn’t come from talent alone but from the continuous application of effort. (成长不仅仅来自天赋,还来自持续的努力付出)”以及第五段“Instead of focusing too much on outcomes or singing high praise for inborn talents, we should emphasize the learning process and continuous improvement. (我们应该强调学习的过程和不断的进步,而不是过于关注结果或对天生的才能大加赞扬)”可知,作者核心观点是努力是成功与成长的关键。C选项“努力是成长为成功的种子”最契合该观点。故选C项。

A.She was good at writing books.
B.She inspired the writer’s love for reading.
C.She donated many books to poor students.

【答案】12.D 13.D 14.B 15.C

根据第二段“When we get to college, our main focus is often on our Grade Point Average(GPA) and succeeding academically with As across the board. This is not a bad thing, especially if you plan to go further in your education than a bachelor’s degree. However, most college graduates have discovered that in the business world, once you graduate from college, your grades mean absolutely nothing. It doesn’t matter whether you got an A or a C. What’s really important is the skills you developed and what you can bring to a company.(当我们上大学时,我们的主要关注点往往是我们的平均绩点(GPA)和在学业上取得全优的成绩。这并不是一件坏事,特别是如果你打算继续深造,攻读学士学位以上的学位。然而,大多数大学毕业生发现,在商业世界里,一旦你从大学毕业,你的成绩就毫无意义了。不管你得了A还是C。真正重要的是你培养的技能以及你能为公司带来什么)”可知,作者在第二段想告诉我们大学生应该关注学习而不是成绩。故选D项。
13.词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Your professors are not just there to give lectures and hand out papers; they are there to help you succeed. Just ask them for help if you have any question, because it’s their job.(你的教授不仅仅是在那里讲课和分发论文;他们也在那里帮助你成功。如果你有任何问题,就向他们寻求帮助,因为这是他们的工作)”以及“It may be frightening at first, but if you’ re struggling in the course, you will overcome that fear and make great progress.(刚开始可能会很害怕,但如果你在这门课上很吃力,你会克服这种恐惧,取得很大的进步)”可知,It指的是“向教授寻求帮助”。故选D项。

But luckily, some of those regrets can be passed on to others so that they can learn from them. Since my time at college isn’t quite over, I sit down with several college graduates to make a list of what I think students most commonly wish they had known during their time in college.(大学生毕业时带着遗憾并不罕见,他们希望自己当时做了这个或没有做那个。

【答案】9.C 10.A 11.A 12.C

He also kept grocery lists for his mini-fridge — Pepsi, coffee, heavy cream — and daily tasks. These notes filled small notebooks, always near his reading chair.(我父亲酷爱列清单。
根据第二段中“Despite his humble beginnings, he was brilliant. After a summer in the leather factory, he graduated from high school at 16 and went on to Boston College. He served in World War II and later earned degrees in physics. Then he worked at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory, moved his family from Lowell to Boston, and sent his kids to private colleges. Deep down, he saw himself simply as a working-class Lowell kid who had just read a lot of books.(尽管他出身卑微,但他很聪明。 故选A。
根据第三段中“When I asked if he regretted not seeing the world, he defended himself: “I’ve sailed the Atlantic in stormy winds, climbed the Himalayas, and stared down wild animals.” Then he added, “I read.” Books were his world. From them, he learned to survive landslides, shark attacks, and even gorilla attacks. He had what he called “a rich inner life” and it was true.(当我问他是否后悔没见过世面时,他为自己辩解道:“我曾在狂风暴雨中横渡大西洋,攀登过喜马拉雅山脉,还与野兽对视过。”接着他补充说:“我读书啊。”书籍就是他的世界。从书中,他学会了在山体滑坡、鲨鱼袭击甚至大猩猩袭击中求生。他拥有自己所说的“丰富的内心世界”,而这的确是事实)”可知,父亲通过阅读书籍在内心经历了各种冒险,拥有丰富的内心世界,父亲的话主要表明他对自己内心的旅程感到自豪。故选A。
15.Why does the author mention the red-white-blue rule in paragraph 4?
A.To explain the timing of active intervention.
B.To show the value of active intervention.
C.To stress the safety of active intervention.
D.To draw readers’ attention to active intervention.
16.What effect may lifeguard parenting have according to the last paragraph?
A.Kids can show potential abilities. B.Parents can live a traditional life.
C.Kids can learn from lifeguards. D.Parents can have full control over kids.
【答案】13.A 14.C 15.A 16.A
根据第二段中“Open attention should be a parent’s default (默认的) state. They care about what their child is doing while staying away from them. They let the child operate independently, though their child may get into a play which includes uncertain results and possibility of physical danger.(开放关注应该是父母的默认状态。他们关心孩子在做的事情,同时远离他们。他们让孩子独立操作,尽管孩子可能会进入一个结果不确定、可能存在身体危险的游戏。)”可知,在开放关注的状态下,父母尊重孩子的独立性。故选A。
根据第三段中“Focused attention kicks in when parents notice warning signs. They might communicate with their child, reminding them to think through their actions without explicitly telling them what to do.(当父母注意到警告信号时,集中注意力就开始起作用了。他们可能会与孩子交流,提醒他们仔细考虑自己的行为,而不会explicitly告诉他们该怎么做。)”可知,集中注意力阶段父母会提醒孩子仔细考虑自己的行为,但是不会明确地告诉他们该怎么做,所以explicitly意为“明确地,直接地”,与Directly意思相近。故选C。
15.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Finally, active intervention happens when parents recognize that they must step into a situation to protect their child. One mother told me about her active intervention, which she calls the red-white-blue rule: Only intervene if you see red blood, white bone or blue bruises (瘀伤).(最后,当父母意识到他们必须介入某种情况来保护孩子时,就会发生积极干预。一位母亲告诉我她的积极干预,她称之为红白蓝规则:只有当你看到鲜血、白骨或瘀伤时才干预。)”可知,作者提到红白蓝规则是为了解释积极干预的时机。故选A。
根据最后一段中“The goal is to spend most of the time in open attention. Focused attention might happen only once every few days, and active intervention should be seldom. I’d love to see “lifeguard parenting” become something we all recognize as being a happy way to raise kids. Kids can do so much more than we expect if they are given the chance.(我们的目标是把大部分时间花在开放关注上。集中注意力可能每隔几天才发生一次,而积极干预应该很少发生。我希望看到“救生员式育儿”成为我们都认可的一种快乐的育儿方式。如果给孩子们机会,他们能做的比我们预期的要多得多。)”可知,救生员式育儿可以让孩子展示出潜在的能力。故选A。
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.A 4.A

【答案】5.D 6.B 7.A 8.C
根据第二段“Surprisingly, even after being prompted by the study, only a third of this group actually reached out.(令人惊讶的是,即使在这项研究的提示下,这个群体中也只有三分之一的人实际联系了对方。)”
根据第四段“You might be satisfied with your family life or feel you need to give your spouse or children more of your attention.(你可能对家庭生活感到满意,或者觉得你需要给你的配偶或孩子更多的关注。)”
根据最后一段“If you’re feeling excited about seeing your old camp buddies, reach out.(如果你对见到你的老营友感到兴奋,那就联系他们吧。)” 故选A。
根据第五段“Why reaching out to old friends is worth it?(为什么与老朋友重新建立联系是值得的?)”和第六段“It also helps to have a diverse network of people who live in different places, know you in different ways, or vary in age or interests.(拥有一个多样化的社交网络也有帮助,这些人生活在不同的地方,以不同的方式了解你,或者年龄或兴趣不同。)”和最后一段“If you're feeling excited about seeing your old camp buddies, reach out.(如果你对见到你的老营友感到兴奋,那就联系他们吧。)”
【答案】9.A 10.A 11.B 12.C

Indeed, some high school friendships can be real and simple; while still some high school students will meet a friend who causes trouble. 故选A项。
根据第二段“Sometimes my friends would make fun of what I wore or what I would do. I always tried to get along well with them, but I realized how happy I was once I stopped contacting them after high school, (有时候我的朋友们会嘲笑我的穿着或我做的事。我一直努力和他们好好相处,但高中毕业后停止联系他们,我才意识到自己有多开心,)”可知,这些“朋友”的行为让她不开心,即感到沮丧。故选A项。
根据第四段“I think the friendship experiences I had in high school shaped who I am because I learned to be open-minded and befriend all kinds of people. (我认为高中时期的友谊经历塑造了我,因为我学会了心胸开阔,与各种各样的人交朋友。)”可知,布里亚娜认为友谊经历塑造自己是因为她学会了结交不同的朋友。故选B项。
12.主旨大意题。通读全文特别是根据最后一段“High school is a small part of your life, but it has a huge influence on who you will become and where you will go. Friendships and relationships help shape who you are, whether they are good or bad. (高中是你人生中很小的一部分,但它对你将成为什么样的人、走向何方有着巨大的影响。无论友谊和关系是好是坏,它们都有助于塑造你。)”可知,本文通过几个事例论证了高中时代的友谊,无论好坏,能够帮助塑造青少年。所以文章核心是高中友谊有助于塑造青少年。故选C项。
【答案】13.B 14.A 15.B 16.C

【答案】5.B 6.C 7.A 8.D
根据第二段中的“Take walking for example. A 150-pound person who walks for 30 minutes will burn, on average, around 140 calories. That’s equal to one can of soda — not exactly a great return on your investment (投入,投资) of time and effort. It’s much easier just to skip the soda.(以散步为例。一个体重150磅的人散步30分钟,平均大约能燃烧140卡路里。这相当于一罐苏打水的热量——对你投入的时间和精力来说,回报并不算高。不喝苏打水要容易得多。)”可知,运动减重的回报低,效果差,故“futile”意为“无用的”,与“useless”含义相近。故选B项。
6.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Researchers found that a combination of dieting and exercising produced no greater weight loss than dieting alone after six months. At 12 months, the diet-and-exercise combination showed an advance, but it was slight — about 4 pounds on average.(研究人员发现,在六个月后,节食和运动相结合的减重效果并不比单独节食更好。在12个月时,节食加运动的组合显示出了优势,但优势很小——平均约4磅。)”可知,与单独节食相比,节食加运动的组合在六个月后几乎没有优势。故选C项。
7.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“And even if we manage to make that much effort, our bodies often compensate (弥补) by boosting (推动,促进) desire for food and slowing down metabolism (新陈代谢), which over time limit how many pounds we lose.(即使我们努力付出了那么多,我们的身体也常常会通过增加食欲和减缓新陈代谢来进行补偿,这会随着时间的推移限制我们减重的幅度。)” 故选A项。
根据第五段中的“The conclusion is that we’re more likely to treat exercise positively and actually do it when we focus on our well-being rather than our weight.(结论是,当我们关注健康而非体重时,我们更有可能以积极的态度对待运动,并真正去做。)”
A.Admired. B.Punished. C.Cheated. D.Honored.
根据第一段中的“Designed to encourage healthy living habits among staff workers, a ‘million-yuan weight loss’ activity started by Shenzhen-based technology company Insta360 has attracted public attention.(为鼓励员工养成健康生活习惯,深圳科技公司Insta360发起的“百万元减重”活动引发了公众关注。)”
根据第三段中的“When asked how she stayed determined and whether she had considered giving up, she smiled and said, “I think now is the best time in my life to become the best I can be — not just for beauty, but also for health.”(当被问及如何保持坚定的意志,是否曾想过放弃时,她笑着说:“我觉得现在是我人生中成为最好自己的最佳时机——不仅是为了美丽,更是为了健康。”)”
根据第四段中的“Over the past year, 99 employees have taken part, losing a total of 950 kilograms and sharing 1 million yuan in cash rewards.(过去一年,共有99名员工参与,累计减重950公斤,瓜分了100万元现金奖励。)”
根据最后一段中“The challenge also includes a “betting” rule — participants who regain weight must pay 800 yuan for each half kilogram gained. So far, no one has regained weight and been penalized, Nanfang Daily reported.(该挑战还设有“赌注”规则——体重反弹的参与者每增重0.5公斤需支付800元。据《南方日报》报道,截至目前,尚无参与者因体重反弹而penalized。)”可知,体重反弹的参与者需要支付罚款,推测划线单词penalized表示“支付罚款”,与Punished意义相近。故选B项。
Passage 4
Many of us start exercising in the hope of losing unwanted pounds. Unquestionably, aiming to be more active is a good thing. But if the main reason is to lose weight, your decision could very well come to nothing.
For starters, exercise is typically a poor strategy for weight loss that may disappoint them. Take walking for example. A 150-pound person who walks for 30 minutes will burn, on average, around 140 calories. That’s equal to one can of soda — not exactly a great return on your hard work of time and effort.
In studies where exercise has produced meaningful weight loss, participants burned at least 400 to 500 calories per workout on five or more days a week. To achieve that, a 150-pound person would need to walk a minimum of 90 minutes or run 30 minutes per day. In short, these workouts need to go well beyond what most of us are willing or able to do. And even if we manage to make that much effort, our bodies often compensate (弥补) by increasing desire for food and slowing down metabolism (新陈代谢), which over time limits how many pounds we lose.
13.What does the author think of exercise for weight loss?
A.Strange. B.Useless. C.High-risk. D.Popular.
14.What can we learn about the combination of dieting and exercising?
A.It’s much less effective than dieting alone.
B.It’s much more useful within six months.
C.It shows little advantage after six months.
D.It has impressive advance after a year.
15.Why does the body’s compensation mechanism affect weight loss?
A.It increases people’s hunger and slows down metabolism.
B.It takes people shorter time to burn more calories.
C.It helps people to do more exercise to lose weight.
D.It makes people pay more attention to their well-being.
16.What is the author’s recommended approach to exercise?
A.Use exercise as a warning. B.Focus on health rather than weight.
C.Avoid exercise when you’re upset. D.Combine proper exercise with diet.
【答案】13.B 14.C 15.A 16.B
根据第一段中的“But if the main reason is to lose weight, your decision could very well come to nothing.(但如果主要目的是减肥,你的努力很可能会付诸东流。)”
根据第三段中的“Researchers found that a combination of dieting and exercising produced no greater weight loss than dieting alone after six months.(研究人员发现,六个月后,节食加锻炼的减肥效果并不比单纯节食更好。)”
根据第四段中的“our bodies often compensate (弥补) by increasing desire for food and slowing down metabolism(新陈代谢), which over time limits how many pounds we lose.(我们的身体通常会通过增加食欲和减缓新陈代谢来补偿,这会随着时间的推移限制我们减重的程度。)” 故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“The conclusion is that we’re more likely to treat exercise positively and actually do it when we focus on our well-being rather than our weight.(结论是,当我们关注健康而非体重时,我们更有可能积极对待锻炼并坚持下去。)”

A.The Gangs of New York. B.The Importance of Being Earnest.

2.Where can you enjoy a play in the Pitlochry Festival Theatre this summer?
A.On the cliff. B.In the woods. C.At a concert hall. D.On city squares.

B.It features a large number of visual effects.
C.It has won a good reputation in overseas markets.
D.It has become the most profitable Chinese movie ever.

9.What does the second paragraph focus on about martial arts?
A.Their effects. B.Their development.

10.Who spread karate according to the text?

C.Japanese troops. D.Chinese migrants.
