After years spent running and dieting, Casey Johnston came across a post about weightlifting.
“I don’t lift to be attractive. I lift to be strong,” Johnston recalls one devoted powerlifter posting.
“Liar,” Johnston thought to herself. “After all, isn’t attractiveness the reason why most people work out?”
Johnston wanted to look attractive in college. She tried, at first, just dieting. That didn’t get her all the way to where she thought she should be — weight-wise. Then she started running. She was running more and more and eating less and less, but sort of staying in the same place. She just had the impression that she should always be losing weight.
Then she learned that what had happened through all of this weight-loss pursuit was that she had dieted and exercised away all of her lean body mass She thought her muscles were just there waiting to be uncovered if she lost enough weight. It turned out that, actually, if you aren’t protecting your muscles actively, they can go away.
While running, Johnston found it punishing, but it was a way to achieve one goal that consumed her: not being fat. She had absorbed the cultural message that the purpose of exercise was to make her as small as possible.
Johnston admits that she was first drawn to weightlifting for the same reason. But gradually, she discovered strength training could offer more.
She says lifting weights helped repair her disordered eating and allowed her to enjoy food. “When I gave it a chance, with these basic elements, I found it transformative. That work of looking closer and listening to myself is worth the time,” she shares. “Most importantly, it changed my attitude about my own body, from one centered on denial of pleasure to a relationship that now embraces movement, rest and eating equally. My body could feel good, even powerful.”
24.How did Johnston find the post at first?
A.Inspiring. B.Ordinary. C.Innovative. D.Unconvincing.
25.What was the outcome of Johnston’s dieting and running in college?
A.She became too weak to study. B.She gained more lean body mass.
C.She didn’t look the way she had expected. D.She lost more weight than planned.
26.Why did Johnston start to learn to lift weights?
A.For weight loss. B.For education.
C.For entertainment. D.For cultural exchange.
27.What is the focus of the last paragraph?
A.How Johnston became more attractive. B.How weightlifting benefited Johnston.
C.How Johnston trained for weightlifting. D.How exercise pressure affected Johnston.
C
We have more ways to access music than at any time in history and a whole world of unfamiliar styles to explore. The thrill of discovering new songs and new sounds can enrich people of all ages. Except, most of the time, it doesn’t. Our willingness to explore new and unfamiliar music declines with age.
Academics use the term “open-earedness” to describe a willingness to engage with unfamiliar music. Until around the age of 11, children are generally happy to engage with unfamiliar music. Early adolescence sees a reduction in open-earedness, but is accompanied by an intense increase in interest in music more generally. Open-earedness increases slightly during young adulthood, and then declines as we age.
A major study involving more than 250,000 participants confirmed these changing behaviors. It also showed that the significance we give to music after adolescence declines, and the amount of music we listen to reduces from a high point of 20% of our waking time during adolescence, to 13% in adulthood.
Researchers have different theories to account for these trends. One explanation for the age-based reduction in music consumption simply posits that responsibility-laden adults may have less free time at their disposal to explore their musical interests than younger people.
Some interpret the observed decline in music engagement in terms of psychosocial maturation. Adolescents use music as an identity marker and engage with it to navigate social circles. Adults have developed personalities and established social groups. As such, drivers to engage with new music are lessened.
Some researchers argue that we shouldn’t use a person’s age to predict if their musical taste will stay the same, without first thinking about how we enjoy and use music at different stages of our lives. Teenagers tend to be very aware of what they are listening to. Adults who use music as motivation or accompaniment for activities such as exercise or menial tasks may be less conscious of the extent to which they actually do listen to new music.
28.What does the term “open-earedness” refer to in the passage?
A.The ability to play music.
B.The willingness to explore new music.
C.The interest in music during adolescence.
D.The significance of music in daily life.
29.According to the study, how does the amount of music listened to change as we age?
A.It remains consistent throughout life.
B.It increases from childhood to adulthood.
C.It peaks during adolescence and then decreases.
D.It gradually declines from childhood to adulthood.
30.What factor is suggested as one cause for a reduced interest in new music among some people as they age?
A.An increase in hearing acuity.
B.Changes in personality and social groups.
C.An intense increase in interest in music.
D.Less spare time due to responsibilities.
31.Which of the following statements about music consumption and age is mentioned in the passage?
A.Children are generally happy to engage with familiar music.
B.Adolescents use music as an identity marker and socialize through music.
C.The elderly are more open to exploring new music than adults.
D.Some scholars question the link between the decline in new music consumption and increasing music intolerance.

Dialects are a cultural resource and the collection of ordinary people’s wisdom. They promote the culture of a region. When an area’s dialect dies out, it means the failure of the local culture, such as folk arts. Dialects are also an essential material to study the history of a country’s language and its evolution, making up for lack of documents. They are human memories whose extinction cannot be reversed.
According to UNESCO, nearly 7,000 languages and dialects worldwide are facing extinction, falling out of use at the rate of about one every two weeks. In China, there are over 120 languages at risk of extinction. More than half of them is spoken by fewer than 10,000 people.
Xu Kaifei, a new media journalist who has a 7-year-old son, finds that Hainanese is not being spoken by the younger generation: “Children do not use the dialect, and some can’t even understand it.” So he started to teach his son the language word by word, uploading videos on social media platforms for viewers interested in Hainanese.
Due to education and work, where standard Chinese is used, many young people who spoke dialects have turned to standard Chinese. Some think speaking only a dialect is an obstacle to finding jobs in cities, where standard Chinese is widely used. So they stop using their native tongue. In many families, the parents guide the switch for their children.
To research dialects, Zhao Rixin, a professor studying dialects at the Beijing Language and Culture University, has visited over 100 places, mostly villages. “Villages are the best sites as their dialects are well preserved, thanks to the small-scale input of outsiders,” he said. His last survey was done in a village in Chengde, Hebei Province in north China, whose dialect is close to standard Chinese.
The dialects in north and northeast China have been better preserved than in other places, he said. The former is similar to standard Chinese, so the local people regard their language as standard Chinese. The dialects of northeast China are popular due to their culture, tradition and economic development. The development of the media and genres (类型) of art has also enhanced people’s pride in this region’s language.
32.The figures used in paragraph 2 are intended to ______
A.illustrate the diversity of dialects across China.
B.reveal the serious problem that dialects are disappearing.
C.propose a possible solution to protect endangered dialects.
D.explain why so many dialects are threatened with extinction.
33.What problem did Xu Kaifei (in Para.3) find about the children?
A.They almost abandon Hainanese. B.They don’t have classes in Hainanese.
C.They often visit social media platforms. D.They don’t learn standard Chinese at school.
34.What does “the switch” in (Para.4) refer to?
A.Speaking a dialect fluently despite their education background.
B.Finding ideal jobs in cities with their good language ability.
C.Giving up the native tongue for the standard Chinese.
D.Taking seriously parents’ advice on language learning
35.Which of the following is a reason why dialects are better preserved in north China?
A.The economic development there is not satisfactory.
B.The dialect there resembles the standard Chinese.
C.Few traditions have been well kept there.
D.Few outsiders have come to live there.
People say fortune favors the brave, but taking a leap is easier said than done. 36
●Embrace strategic risk.
One of the biggest misconceptions about risk-taking is that if something feels uncomfortable, it’s a sign to back away. But researches have taught us this: 37 Ask yourself, “Does this risk match my values? Is it moving me toward something I care about?” If yes, expect some embarrassment. The biggest payoffs live just past that initial awkward phase.
● 38
Many of us have grown too afraid of taking risks — maybe because one risk made us embarrassed. A good way to feel less scared of risks is to ask yourself: “What’s one small thing I can do to get used to not knowing what will happen?” Start with bite-size, winnable risks, like speaking up in a meeting, volunteering for a project slightly outside your wheelhouse.
●Breathe in bravery.
Breathe out fear. 39 In other words, taking a few deep breaths helps regulate anxiety. Another easy way to stretch your risk- taking muscles is by copying someone you admire. Imagine them in your shoes and how they'd approach your challenge. How would they talk, walk or hold themselves? Even standing tall sends a signal to your brain that “you’ve got this”.
●Forgive yourself.
We all have moments when we don't do the thing that will help us grow. And that’s okay! Instead of beating yourself up, forgive yourself because you’re human. 40 Being kind to yourself may just be the best way to step forward toward a braver version of yourself.
A.Enjoy small wins.
B.Our body impacts our mind.
C.Overcome unexpected fears.
D.No one is courageous all the time.
E.Humans always have high expectations.
F.Bravery and awkwardness are sisters in life.
G.The following tips will help you outsmart fear.

As my husband Bill and I drove to what was supposed to be our romantic anniversary (周年纪念日) getaway — an early autumn overnighter at a peaceful shore destination, an unexpected storm hit.
The Maple with its Olympic-size pool and award-winning restaurant was a perfect destination. Located atop a hill overlooking an ocean, it was within walking distance of a nearby town. At the other end of the road was a lighthouse where sightseers could climb the winding staircase to the observation spot.
This trip promised to be fantastic — until the rain poured down. The more I prayed, the harder it rained. We had to find a shelter to wait for the rain to stop. When we managed to get to The Maple, it was late at night.
The door of the indoor pool was locked. And it wouldn’t be open the next day, for it needed upgrading that day. I felt tears in my eyes.
Bill comforted, “We can have dinner in the restaurant you like.” So, we walked to the hotel restaurant, but were greeted by a sign: Closed on Mondays.
“Oh, I just studied the introduction to its delicious food! I thought it was open all the time,” I said to Bill. “I’m so sorry.”
“Relax, honey,” Bill said, “There must be something open in the nearby town.”
Soon, Bill and I found an old-fashioned restaurant in the town. There, we enjoyed our dinner while recalling our happy memories. When we considered having some dessert, the flash of a sign caught my attention. “Homemade ice cream,” it read. “Thirty flavors.” We ran to the corner shop, ordered several flavors and ate the whole thing. We felt like carefree teenagers!
When we returned to The Maple, Bill said, “Well, things didn’t go as expected. But tomorrow morning we can still climb to the top of the lighthouse before we drive back home. I know how much you want to do that.”
The following morning, as we approached the lighthouse, we saw another sign: CLOSED FOR REPAIRS. The storm must have damaged the lighthouse!注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
“Look! The beach ahead is still open. We can go there,” I said to Bill cheerfully.

When I started primary school, I joined a swimming club and I went swimming twice a week. I had a lovely trainer called Anna. She encouraged me to enter competitions and I did quite well. Nearly every Saturday a group of us from the swimming club went to other towns to have competitions. That was fun. After I’d won quite a lot of competitions, I moved into the advanced class at the club and I had a trainer who was once an Olympic winner! He wanted me to receive training every day after school for an hour and a half. My parents didn’t agree because I needed to spare some time for my school work. But they let me go three days a week.
【答案】24.D 25.C 26.A 27.B
根据第二段“I don’t lift to be attractive. I lift to be strong.(我举重不是为了好看,而是为了强壮。)”以及第三段““Liar,” Johnston thought to herself. “After all, isn’t attractiveness the reason why most people work out?”(“骗子,”约翰斯顿心里想,“毕竟,吸引力难道不是大多数人锻炼的原因吗?”)”
根据第四段中的“Johnston wanted to look attractive in college. She tried, at first, just dieting. That didn’t get her all the way to where she thought she should be — weight-wise. Then she started running. She was running more and more and eating less and less, but sort of staying in the same place.(约翰斯顿在大学时想让自己看起来有吸引力。起初她只尝试节食,但体重方面并没有达到她认为应该达到的状态。然后她开始跑步,跑得越来越多、吃得越来越少,却似乎一直停在原地。)” 可知,Johnston大学时节食和跑步的结果是,她并没有变成自己预期的样子。故选C。
26.细节理解题。根据第七段中的“Johnston admits that she was first drawn to weightlifting for the same reason.(约翰斯顿承认,她最初被举重吸引也是出于同样的原因。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段“She says lifting weights helped repair her disordered eating and allowed her to enjoy food. ‘When I gave it a chance, with these basic elements, I found it transformative. That work of looking closer and listening to myself is worth the time,’ she shares. ‘Most importantly, it changed my attitude about my own body, from one centered on denial of pleasure to a relationship that now embraces movement, rest and eating equally. My body could feel good, even powerful.’(她说举重有助于修复她不健康的饮食习惯,让她享受食物。
根据第二段中“Academics use the term ‘open-earedness’ to describe a willingness to engage with unfamiliar music.(学者们用“乐于接受不熟悉的音乐”这个词来描述愿意接触不熟悉音乐的意愿。)”
根据第三段中“It also showed that the significance we give to music after adolescence declines, and the amount of music we listen to reduces from a high point of 20% of our waking time during adolescence, to 13% in adulthood.(研究还表明,青春期后我们对音乐的重视程度下降,我们听音乐的量从青春期清醒时间的20%这一高点下降到成年期的13%。)”
根据第四段中“One explanation for the age-based reduction in music consumption simply posits that responsibility-laden adults may have less free time at their disposal to explore their musical interests than younger people.(对基于年龄的音乐消费减少的一种解释简单地认为,肩负责任的成年人可能比年轻人有更少的空闲时间来探索他们的音乐兴趣。)”
根据第五段中“Adolescents use music as an identity marker and engage with it to navigate social circles.(青少年将音乐作为一种身份标识,并通过音乐来融入社交圈。)”

34.What does “the switch” in (Para.4) refer to?
A.Speaking a dialect fluently despite their education background.
B.Finding ideal jobs in cities with their good language ability.
C.Giving up the native tongue for the standard Chinese.

The following morning, as we approached the lighthouse, we saw another sign: CLOSED FOR REPAIRS. The storm must have damaged the lighthouse!注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
“Look! The beach ahead is still open. We can go there,” I said to Bill cheerfully.

As we drove home, Bill said to me, “This trip certainly didn’t go as planned, did it?”
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“Look! The beach ahead is still open. We can go there,” I said to Bill cheerfully. Bill’s eyes lit up, and he quickly parked the car. We rushed out, kicking off our shoes to feel the cool sand under our feet. I laughed as a small wave touched my toes, and Bill grabbed my hand to spin me around. We walked along the shore, picking up smooth shells now and then. The rain had stopped, leaving a bright rainbow in the sky. I felt my disappointment fade away, replaced by pure joy — this unplanned moment was more special than any fancy pool or restaurant.
As we drove home, Bill said to me, “This trip certainly didn’t go as planned, did it?” I smiled and shook my head. “But it was better than planned,” I replied. I thought about our funny run to the ice cream shop and the warm walk on the beach. Those little surprises made our anniversary feel unique. Bill reached over to hold my hand, and I squeezed it softly. “Next year, maybe we’ll plan less and just enjoy whatever comes,” he said. I nodded happily, knowing that even when things go wrong, being with him turns ordinary moments into precious memories. This trip wasn’t what we expected, but it was exactly what we needed.
